That’s what the independent producers of “The Man From Earth: Holocene” concluded about the inevitable piracy of their sci-fi film, a sequel to the 2007 cult hit “The Man From Earth.”
More than two months before its April 3 release on digital and DVD, they uploaded it to The Pirate Bay — available in up to 1080p HD format — and it spread to other services. The video is book-ended by an appeal from director-producer Richard Schenkman to consider donating some money if they watched the movie. “If you like it, support it, and remember that sharing is caring,” reads the note they included with the digital versions they distributed on piracy networks.
Since “self-pirating” their movie on Jan. 15, according to Schenkman and producer Eric D. Wilkinson, they’ve received nearly $45,000 in donations via their site, manfromearth.com, from fans and supporters around the world including China,...

The Nice Guys didn’t perform as well as we felt it deserved, yet Shane Black is something of a hot commodity again. While his Predator sequel / reboot / whatever prepares for a release in February of 2018, the writer-director apparently spent this Memorial Day weekend with, fittingly, our greatest living American, Dwayne Johnson, to move forward with their long-rumored collaboration: Doc Savage, a ’30s- and ’40s-era superhero who pre-dates and, speaking for ability, in many ways matches Superman.
Taking to Instagram, the star confirmed his involvement in the project scripted by Black, Nice Guys co-writer Anthony Bagarozzi, and Chuck Mondry. Sony is supporting the project, about which little else is known — though one imagines it’s to come after The Predator, i.e. remains a few years off. Waiting aside, the point stands: it’s plenty nice to have more Black, and it’s no less odd to be actively excited about a superhero picture.

Powers is a new comic book show, exclusive to PlayStation Network. Our thoughts, both spoiler-filled and spoiler-free, are here…
Warning: there are spoilers later on, but we’ll warn you before we get into them.
First coming into existence in the year 2000, Powers is an on-going comic book by writer Brian Michael Bendis (credited, perhaps most famously, with being the artichect of Marvel’s Ultimate universe) and artist Michael Avon Oeming (known for Bluntman And Chronic and a host of Marvel work).
Powers (originally an Image comic, now owned by Marvel’s Icon imprint), is the story of two detectives – Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim – based in the ‘Powers’ Division of the police force in a world where superheroes and their equally powerful villains are commonplace. Both characters’ pasts come into play in interesting ways, and the chemistry between them is a thing of beauty.

In 2007 The Man From Earth took the internet by storm, introducing a mind-boggling, completely compelling science fiction concept to an unexpectedly wide audience. It was writer Jerome Bixby’s final work, and the film wasn’t made until almost a decade after his death. Now, six years after the film’s release, the filmmakers are listening to the audience cries for more and are making a sequel titled Man From Earth Millennium.
The first film’s director, Richard Schenkman, is back at the helm for this outing and I recently had the opportunity to talk to him about the project. We discussed getting the first film made, the struggles of funding this sort of movie, what can be expected from Man From Earth Millennium and much more.
Check out the full interview below.
Wgtc: How’s the Kickstarter campaign going so far?
Richard Schenkman: Regarding the campaign, we’re just three days in.

Neil Gaiman has been quite busy of late, what with his recent Q&A tour, co-writing Guardians of the Galaxy with Brian Michael Bendis, and bringing one of his creations, Angela, over to the Marvel Universe proper. Now he's adding Game Creator to his already impressive resume, and the game is called Wayward Manor. He has partnered with The Odd Gentleman, makers of The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom (a game that itself is incredibly charming and different) to construct a puzzle game that credits you with the task of scaring everyone out of your home. Think of it as the "I can't find a peaceful place in my house so everyone get out!" simulator, but ghostly. Plus, it has a butler, and any game with a butler is immediately more enjoyable (Fable 3 would not be as enjoyable without a Jarvis, and yes, I did actually enjoy Fable 3).

Ed Brubaker is a name I use with reverence, and also when I to provide a false identity to the police (sorry, Ed). Brubaker has generated a lot of good will within the comics industry, mainly because he’s really fucken good. He first really appeared on a lot of people’s radars, including mine, back when he started writing Batman and Catwoman for DC Comics, but he’d been working in the industry for more than a decade before that.
Kicking through the indie comics scene, Brubaker found success (and future collaborators) when he started to get his crime-groove on, with books like Scene of the Crime and The Fall.
The thing that got me so jazzed, though, was his run on Batman (followed by a stint on Detective Comics). He wrote that book like a fucken crime comic. This was noir, it was bleak, it was espionage-y, it was cool,...

If "The Expendables" brought the pantheon of action-movie heroes together for one balls-to-the-wall R-rated epic, then the amounts of badassery that "The Expendables 2" promises to bring to the table is even further off the charts.
Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger are upping their game from cameos to full-fledged co-stars this time around, with Chuck Norris roundhouse kicking his way into the fray as well. And then there's Jean-Claude Van Damme, who won't be just another mercenary following Sylvester Stallone's lead, either. Quite the opposite, in fact: The Muscles from Brussels is going to be the movie's villain.

Donald Glover is the reason the term “Renaissance Man” exists.
Most of you will recognize Glover as one half of a large reason why Community is as successful as it is, the character Troy Barnes, best friend of Abed, the infamous fictional embodiment of all that WhatCulture! represents. [1] News on a screen adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis' comic book series Powers has been painfully slow going: It's been eleven years since the series launched to critical acclaim, ten years since Sony optioned it for a film, two years since the project was redirected [2] to the small screen, and one year since Bendis and Journeyman creator Kevin Falls pitched [3] the show to cable network FX. Now, finally, FX has greenlit a pilot for the series. Hopefully, this means we can look forward to development on this project picking up pace. More details after the jump. Deadline [4] reported over the weekend that FX had ordered a pilot for Powers, to be directed by Michael Dinner from a script by Charles H. Eglee. Falls, who wrote the script that Bendis showed to FX last year, has left the project. Casting for the Powers pilot is to begin immediately, and shooting will start in the spring.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand
Starz new original series pulled 553,000 viewers on Starz and then gathered another 460,000 on Encore, easily their most-watched debut yet. Combined with DVR and repeats, the "Spartacus" premiere is expected to clear two million viewers.
Caprica
The "Battlestar Galactica" spin-off had a modest premiere on Syfy on Friday, the pilot pulling in 1.6 million viewers despite being one of the only alternatives to watch that night when the "Hope For Haiti" telethon roadblocked over 50 networks. Of course the pilot has been available on DVD and download since April last year, which means the real test will come next week as fresh episodes kick off.
Powers
Comic writer Brian Michael Bendis' "Powers"is being turned into a pilot for a possible series on the FX network. The series focuses on detectives who handle cases having to do with "powers," or people who have superpowers. "Journeyman" creator Kevin Falls will co-write the pilot with Bendis.

Anyone tired of effects-heavy ideas -- light, glossy-looking Hollywood product of whatever genre -- should seek out "The Man From Earth", a philosophical/theological enterprise so lo-fi that it must rely almost entirely on its concepts, dialogue and performances to get by. That it manages this so enthrallingly is the considerable achievement of director Richard Schenkman (1996's minor indie splash "The Pompatus of Love"), star David Lee Smith and, in particular, writer Jerome Bixby.
Bixby is now a semi-forgotten name, but his small oeuvre exerted a disproportionate impact on the last century's science-fiction. His "Star Trek" segment "Requiem For Methuselah", featuring a human who claims to be 6,000 years old, was reworked into "The Man From Earth," completed on the author's deathbed in 1998.
Bixby also wrote an episode of "The Twilight Zone", and "The Man From Earth" feels much more "Zone" than "Trek": set in a single location over a single day with production-values that might charitably be described as rudimentary. The $200,000-budgeted film has an off-puttingly rough video look and TV-movie feel that pretty much rule out any kind of conventional theatrical distribution. It's already made considerable impact via the file-sharing protocol BitTorrent and has proved an unlikely hit with attendees of the film-festival circuit's weirder reaches.
A group of small-town college-professors and one student gather to commemorate the departure of youthful-looking colleague John Oldman (Smith). When pressed on his motives, Oldman is evasive — until he impulsively "confesses" that he's actually been around for 14 millennia. His highbrow friends initially take this as an intellectual jeu d'esprit, but as the self-proclaimed "Cro-Magnon survivor" goes on with his wild, provocative chronicle, doubts start to creep in.
With technical contributions so basic, performances are crucial. While even these are notably uneven, Smith dominates with what is at times an extended monologue that helps the film, after a most unpromising opening, to gradually and stimulatingly build to a pitch of near-hypnotic intensity. Even if the clumsy final minutes abandon the carefully maintained air of ambiguity which otherwise prevails, this is only a minor flub in a picture which deserves wide exposure — and will be a major talking point wherever and however it's seen.
