Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin”), William H. Macy and Clifton Collins Jr. have joined director Clint Bentley’s “Train Dreams,” Variety has learned.
Production on the film, from Black Bear and also starring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, began earlier this month in Spokane, Wash.
“Train Dreams” is the sweeping and poignant tale of Robert Grainier (Edgerton), a day laborer employed as a logger helping to expand the railways across America. Forced to spend prolonged periods of time away from his wife, Gladys (Jones), and their young daughter, Grainier struggles to make sense of his place in a rapidly changing world. As his story unfolds, he experiences great love, unspeakable loss, and unique bonds on a journey that is both distinct and universal. The picture features a script by Bentley and Greg Kwedar (“Sing Sing”), which is adapted from Denis Johnson’s iconic, Pulitzer Prize-nominated novella of the same name.

Apart from their action-packed plots and mind-blowing acts of heroism, movies like The Beekeeper are admired for their good vs evil tropes. That’s the premise of the 2024 action thriller written by Kurt Wimmer and directed by David Ayer. Released in January 2024 to mixed but mostly positive reviews, The Beekeeper follows Jason Statham’s Adam Clay. He embarks on a murderous spree after the only person who’s ever cared for him fell victim to a phishing scam enterprise. The film tries to highlight how corruption and a failed system affect the dependent population. But what resonated with viewers revolves around the brutal

David Ayer’s The Beekeeper wrestles with the idea of a secret organization with unbound free will to reset society whenever it’s gone astray. Utilizing the honey bee colony as a backdrop for its plot, the action flick attempts to make a serious point about failed systems in government: corruption and how the law isn’t always in the interest of justice. But the film’s major appeal lies in its paced action sequence, likened to cult classics like John Wick and The Equalizer. Although released to mixed reviews, critics and moviegoers agree The Beekeeper is fun to watch. The movie written by

The box office has been firmly in recovery mode for several years now. The pandemic, it's no secret, completely upended the business, and movie theaters have been trying to figure out what the future looks like ever since. Hollywood, for its part, has been doing the same, attempting to balance its streaming-focused operations with the need to release movies in theaters. 2024 has brought forth yet another challenge as the Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes last year resulted in a disappointingly bare release calendar. Dire though it has seemed at times, there have been many bright spots in the darkness.
Yes, we've had more than a few box office flops this year, ranging from superhero films like "Madame Web" to total whiffs like "The Book of Clarence." Those flops have helped create a rough situation. However, we've also had quite a few hits. Not just movies that...

2024 is an important year for the movie business. The past few years have been all about recovering from the pandemic. Now? Hollywood and theater chains are facing the challenge of weathering a year that has been crippled by 2023's Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild of America strikes. There have been moments worth cheering about, such as the success of "Dune: Part Two." But, as always, there have been plenty of sour moments at the box office as well, with more than a few flops to go along with the hits.
The early part of the year was anchored by relatively smaller hits like director David Ayer's "The Beekeeper" and the "Mean Girls" musical. Mixed in along the way were a wide variety of misfires, from hopeful big studio blockbusters to smaller, original movies just trying to find their way in an uncertain theatrical landscape. Some of these flops...

Zendaya has, in just a small handful of years, asserted herself as a true A-list star in Hollywood. So much focus is paid to actors in their 40s (or much older) such as Tom Cruise, one of the many famous people named Chris, or Anne Hathaway. But Zendaya has emerged as one of our new movie stars, thanks to her work in wildly successful franchises such as "Dune" and "Spider-Man." But can her star power help turn "Challengers," an original sports drama centered around tennis, into a hit? That's the big question MGM is asking right now as the movie gets ready to make its way to theaters next weekend.
Hailing from "Call Me By Your Name" director Luca Guadagnino, "Challengers" is eyeing an opening between $7 and $12 million, per Box Office Pro. The only other big release on April 26 is Lionsgate's Christian drama "Unsung Hero." Yes, faith-based movies have...

Asphalt City (Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire)
I entered Asphalt City at last year’s EnergaCAMERIMAGE festival with nothing but morbid curiosity. Having engendered some rank responses from its Cannes premiere and not secured any known U.S. distributor, Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s film had the right kind of bad-object energy one needs at the jetlagged start to their week in a small Polish city. (Or just the comfort I personally get from a Brooklyn-shot feature featuring two Club Random guests.) I walked away boasting complicated, fascinated enthusiasm: nearly every second is ridiculous and never boring, and it doesn’t not deserve to play at a cinematography festival––having the most cinematography counts for something. Starting and ending with a blatant homage to The New World...

Produced by Spanish company Esto También Pasará and Mexican outfit Sdb Films (“The Deal”), shooting on “The Gentleman” is already underway in San Sebastián, Spain, and will run for six weeks. The film is scheduled to be released by Universal in Spain in 2025.
Uruguay’s Juma Fodde penned the film’s screenplay, which is adapted from Carlos Augusto Casas’ Spanish novel “Ya no quedan junglas adodnde regresar.”
“The Gentleman” turns on an aging former U.S. soldier named Theo (Perlman), who spends his days dreaming about better times that are now years behind him. Each week, Theo meets with Olga, a prostitute he pays to talk with him about who he once was and what he might have been under different circumstances.

The Beekeeper is now the highest-grossing film of 2024. Granted, that title won’t last long since the Jason Statham film has only grossed less than $130 million worldwide, but many dismissed the David Ayer vehicle as a lazy and cheap cash grab meant to occupy the dead January space. What’s even more shocking is that it beat Mean Girls, a well-known brand that’s based on an iconic film in the modern generation as the updated feature has only amassed $92.7 million worldwide. The Beekeeper only has a production budget of $25 million, so it easily made more than three times

During its existence, the DC Extended Universe (Dceu) gave rise to some historic blunders. My personal favorite was when Dwayne Johnson simply refused to accept that his "Black Adam" movie wasn't very good, but the ill-fated shared universe has a plethora of greatest hits when it comes to cinematic slip-ups, from the box office disappointment that was "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" to the box office bomb of super-heroic proportions that was "The Flash."
Look, it's extremely difficult to build a shared cinematic universe. Aside from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the only action franchise that's really achieved anything of note in the last few years is the "John Wick" saga, and even that can't hope to match the historic highs of the MCU. So you can't really fault DC and Warner Bros. for failing to establish an enduring cinematic multiverse — though that hasn't stopped David Ayer from trying.

A new film from Damien Chazelle is officially in the works as his follow-up to the ambitious and costly Old Hollywood epic “Babylon.”

The next collaboration between Jason Statham and David Ayer (with a Sylvester Stallone script) – Levon’s Trade – is now shooting, with further casting announced.
Earlier this year we were treated to a rip-roaringly good time when director David Ayer and star Jason Statham brought us The Beekeeper. You can catch our review for that film here, but in short, it was lots of fun and following a theatrical run where it grossed north of $150m, it likely made a profit for all involved.
As such, the production companies behind The Beekeeper have once again acquired the services of Ayer and Statham and are hoping to repeat the trick once again, this time with Levon’s Trade.
As with The Beekeeper, Amazon MGM has agreed to handle distribution in the US, and none other than Sylvester Stallone has adapted the screenplay from Chuck Dixon’s novel.

As with The Beekeeper, Amazon MGM has agreed to handle distribution in the US, and none other than Sylvester Stallone has adapted the screenplay from Chuck Dixon’s novel.

Deadline reports that principal photography has kicked off on Levon’s Trade, an action thriller starring Jason Statham. The project has also added a few new members to the cast, with David Harbour (Stranger Things), Michael Peña (Narcos: Mexico), Jason Flemyng (Boiling Point) and Arianna Rivas (The Harvest) signing on to appear in Levon’s Trade.
David Ayer is directing Levon’s Trade from a screenplay by none other than Sylvester Stallone, with revisions by Ayer. The project is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Chuck Dixon. The book is the first installment of the Levon Cade series, which consists of eleven novels. With so much material, this could easily be another franchise starter for Statham.

The Killing Joke is considered one of comic book legend Alan Moore’s crowing achievements in superhero comics. Right alongside his classic works like The Watchmen, The Killing Joke attempts to tell the story of Batman’s most notorious nemesis, the Joker.

As a child who grew up wandering in and out of pubs waiting for my mother to finish her shift, I would have frequent encounters with the eccentric locals who, more often than not, chose to spend their time regaling customers with the same old stories, most of which were either embellished to the nth degree or completely fabricated. It’s these types of characters that lie at the heart of Sean Lyons’ tall tale comedy Smoking Dolphins, a pub-set short which takes these archetypes and finds the similarities they share with double-dealing politicians. Lyons has had great success with Smoking Dolphins on the festival circuit and we’re excited to now be presenting the online premiere for audiences worldwide. It’s clever, funny and really well-constructed, an element of the film we discuss with Lyon in our in-depth interview below where he also reveals the advice on blocking he received from James Mangold.

It’s a genuine miracle that The People’s Joker has managed to make it to screens unscathed, especially considering the legal battles which dogged the 2023 TIFF premiere could easily have left it trapped in the vault forever. Many of the rave reactions from that festival were written solely within the context of such lingering threat, with many critics doubling-up as armchair legal experts, not analyzing the qualities of Vera Drew’s film so much as they were assessing the likelihood of whether anybody else would ever see it. Now that this unauthorized take on the DC mythos is defiantly arriving on screens––albeit with a lengthy legal scrawl preceding the action itself––it’s immediately obvious that writing about it solely within the context of whether it constitutes a serious copyright violation is something of an insult.

David Ayer is following up the success of The Beekeeper with a new dramatic thriller from producer Damien Chazelle.
Ayer is set to direct Paramount Pictures’ Heart of the Beast from a script by Cameron Alexander. The feature, which has been in development since 2017, follows a former Navy Seal and his combat dog amid their attempt to find civilization after getting stranded deep in the Alaskan terrain.
Producers include Chazelle and Olivia Hamilton of Wild Chickens Productions, in addition to Ayer and Chris Long of Cedar Park Entertainment.
Ayer most recently helmed Amazon MGM Studios’ The Beekeeper, the Jason Statham-led thriller that surpassed $150 million at the global box office. The filmmaker, who wrote Training Day and worked on the script for The Fast and the Furious, has previously directed Fury, Suicide Squad and Bright.

David Ayer recently turned heads with The Beekeeper, a seemingly run-of-the-mill Jason Statham action film that turned out to be a strange mish-mash of ideas and bold choices that still feels like a fever dream. Ayer has had some hits under his belt, but as a whole, the filmmaker’s resume has some divisive receptions among them. This brings us to the interesting partnering with the Whiplash, La La Land and Babylon director Damien Chazelle. As Chazelle attempts to recover from Babylon‘s flopping, the First Man director will only be producing the new film that Ayer will helm.

The film will come from Chazelle and spouse Olivia Hamilton’s company, Wild Chicken Productions, as part of their first look deal with Paramount. Following an extensive campaign by fans worldwide, Zack Snyder revealed plans to release a director’s cut of the 2017 film Justice League. The filmmaker had to leave the production of the superhero ensemble after which Joss Whedon was hired to complete the movie. Despite the anticipation, the 2017 film failed to gain a positive reception.
Justice League (2017)
However, persistent fan demand for Snyder’s original vision eventually led to the release of his version on Warner Bros.’ streaming service Max. The Snyder Cut was praised for its direction, visual aesthetics, action sequences, and performances. And the success of the Snyder Cut on the streaming platform could have potentially provided a boost to Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic Dune.

Following its launch in 2020, Warner Bros. introduced a strategy of simultaneous theatrical and streaming releases for several films, including Denis Villeneuve’s Dune.

It has been eight years since Jared Leto first essayed the role of the Joker in Warner Brothers’ Suicide Squad, and then again in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but audiences still cannot get over the fact that the Joker of the Dceu was morbidly underwhelming, despite the slew of inspirations that it drew from.

The first trailer for the remake of The Crow was finally released last week, and although it had its fans, it generated quite a lot of backlash. Alex Proyas, the director of the original movie, doesn’t seem to be a fan of the remake and took to Facebook to say that The Crow should remain the legacy of Brandon Lee.
“I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work,” Proyas wrote. “And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s response speaks volumes. The Crow is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy. That’s how it should remain.

The brand new The Crow trailer features ultra-violence and a lot of shirtless Bill Skarsgård. Take a peek.
Is this a safe space to admit that the first-look photos of Rupert Sanders’ The Crow remake/reboot/whatever we’re calling it, didn’t have me convinced? I wasn’t sure of the excessive, David Ayer’s Joker-esque make-up on Bill Skarsgård, and I was dreading the release of the first trailer because the 1994 film holds a special place in my heart.

James Gunn’s Dcu has finally started production with Superman, the first film in the new and improved shared universe of DC superheroes. Among the slew of things that were announced for the first chapter of the universe was a show called Waller, focusing on Amanda Waller and her work behind the scenes of creating Task Force X, otherwise known as the Suicide Squad.
Viola Davis as Amanda Waller in The Suicide Squad
Waller could set up the road to bringing the Suicide Squad into the Dcu. It is already known that the Peacemaker would be carrying over from the Dceu into the Dcu, which could open the door for other characters to make a renewed appearance in the new DC universe. However, this could result in an iteration of the Suicide Squad without the likes of Margot Robbie, as another actress might take up the role of Harley Quinn.

Jason Statham will be protecting his bees on the telly, as The Beekeeper’s Sky Cinema debut is now confirmed in the UK.
It’s been quite lovely to report on The Beekeeper this year in particular, the action thriller starring Jason Statham where The Stath, well, keeps bees. As we’ve written several times on this site already this year alone, it’s a really good movie, with The Statham back to the kind of in-camera action that he built his career up on.
Directed by David Ayer – who we spoke to for a podcast special here – there’s much to enjoy with The Beekeeper, and hopes are high for a sequel too. Its solid box office returns on a modest budget certainly help in that department.
In the UK, the film was released by Sky Cinema into UK cinemas in early January. Sky is giving its cinema released films a 45 day theatrical window.

Jason Statham tending bees and hitting people has helped turn The Beekeeper into an early 2024 box office hit. More here:
If you’re a regular reader of the site, you may have – correctly – got the impression that we were very, very fond of The Beekeeper.
As discussed in our review, it feels far more in keeping with the visceral films Jason Statham was making when his career was on the up. With David Ayer no slouch behind the camera and Kurt Wimmer’s script having more to it than it’s been given credit for, it’s a genuine January treat.
It’s also a film that’s managed to take advantage of a paucity of new January releases. The only big studio film to hit worldwide in January was Mean Girls, the one we’re not supposed to call a musical. That’s at $83m worldwide so far, and should brush past $100m soon.

Victims, aren’t we all? Well, Eric Draven is at least, and we’re not talking about his Devil’s Night death. When the first look at Bill Skarsgård’s version of the character arrived earlier this week, the reception was poor to say the least. One peek at this new Eric Draven and pretty much one thing came to everybody’s mind: Jared Leto as The Joker. Complete with a tattoo above the eyebrow and one that even let his left nipple stand in for an eyeball, the look has been widely blasted by fans and even those directly linked to the 1994 cult favorite. Now, someone tied very closely to Leto’s Joker, David Ayer, has chimed in…although his dig is a little more subtle than most.
Responding to a post showing Skarsgård as Eric Draven in the upcoming reboot, David Ayer said nothing, only laying down a sly side-eye emoji.
