The cast of Hulu’s latest dramedy “Unprisoned” kept the family spirit alive at the show’s premiere at the Hollywood Legion Theater on Thursday night.
The show’s cast and crew — including Kerry Washington, Delroy Lindo, Faly Rakotohavana, Marque Richardson, Jee Young Han, Jordyn McIntosh, showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser and creator Tracy McMillan — examined what it means to be a “traditional” family on the red carpet before a screening of the first two episodes.
The series follows relationship therapist and single mom Paige (Washington), “whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad (Lindo) gets out of prison and moves to her house to live with her and her teenage son,” according to the show’s official synopsis.
“I wanted to show a family that every person in America would identify with, even though they’re facing very specific circumstances,” McMillan told Variety. “This is at its heart, a father-daughter story.

Jay-Z is widely regarded as a hip-hop legend thanks to his years in the music industry and undeniable talent for rapping. He’s continued to remain a high-profile figure thanks to his music career as well as his marriage to Beyoncé. But despite being in the public eye, Jay-Z isn’t necessarily a fan of being on camera all the time.
Jay-Z | Kevin Winter/Getty Images Jay-Z has been in the public eye for nearly 3 decades
Jay-Z first started rapping in the mid-1990s in the wake of his fellow Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn native The Notorious B.I.G. The two even collaborated together on the songs “Brooklyn’s Finest” and “I Love the Dough.”
Jay-Z released his debut album Reasonable Doubt in 1996. He followed it up in the following years with In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life, Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter, The Dynasty: Roc La Familia, and his seminal 2001 album The Blueprint.

Director of some of the best Japanese movies we have seen after 2010, with titles like “The Great Passage” and “The Tokyo Night Sky Is Always the Densest Shade of Blue” under his belt, Yuya Ishii seems, however, to be experiencing an out of form recently, with his last works being interesting, but not on the same level with the aforementioned, for example. Let us see how he fared with his latest work, “A Madder Red”.
“A Madder Red” is screening at Nippon Connection
The film begins with a car crash that sends Yoichi, lead singer of a band, husband of Ryoko and father of a young boy named Junpei, to death. 7 years later, the boy is now a middle school student who is facing bullying for his mother’s work, since the fact that she is a sexual worker seems to have been revealed. Ryoko, however, also covers the expenses of her father-in-law,...

TV used to be about shows. Now, based on many of the industry’s glitzy upfront presentations that took place this week, it’s all about algorithms.
At show after show, NBCUniversal, Disney, Fox, Paramount, Univision and The CW spent time hawking new scripted comedies and dramas; unscripted series; lots of sports; and even movies. But in many cases, the availability of the categories seemed more important than the programing that filled them. How many standout series can you name from any specific network this year?
There’s a reason why the networks have made such a shift. As TV’s once gigantic time-and-date audiences splinter among dozens of new-tech viewing opportunities, the crowds that watch shows at any one moment have gotten smaller. That forces Madison Avenue to stitch together groups of consumers a little at a time — a Hulu binge here, a 10 p.m. watch there. Rather than attach themselves to particular programs,...

Hulu has put legal drama Reasonable Doubt on a script-to-series development track with the opening of a writers room. The project, originally set up at ABC during the 2019-20 development season, hails from writer Raamla Mohamed (Scandal), Kerry Washington’s Simpson Street Productions, Larry Wilmore’s Wilmore Films, celebrity attorney Shawn Holley, a member of O.J. Simpson’s legal defense “Dream Team,” and ABC Signature where Mohamed and Washington have been under deals.
Mohamed reworked her original script for streaming as Reasonable Doubt was taken on by Onyx Collective, the recently launched new Disney curated content brand for creators of color and underrepresented voices, led by Tara Duncan, whose output is tailored primarily for Hulu.
The Reasonable Doubt writers room, consisting of all-black staff led by Mohamed, is working on a handful of scripts that will be evaluated by Hulu brass as part of their consideration of a series pick-up for the project.

Fresh off the long-awaited arrival of Zack Snyder’s Justice League (a.k.a. the fabled Snyder Cut), HBO Max has no need to appease fandom culture in April 2021. But the streaming service is gonna do it anyway!
The most notable new release for HBO Max this month is the HBO series The Nevers. This show, created by Joss Whedon, is set in a 19th century steampunk London and finds a sizable portion of the population (predominantly women) having been “Touched” by mysterious paranormal powers. There’s an interesting bit of irony at play here, as HBO Max is following up the Snyder Cut with a show created by his original Justice League replacement. Or at least there could have been an interesting bit of irony here, if Whedon had not bowed out from the show and been enthusiastically left out of the marketing material by HBO.

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

NBC has given a put pilot commitment to a new comedy from Larry Wilmore and London Hughes.
The untitled single-camera sitcom hails from studio Universal Television and Wilmore’s own production company, Wilmore Films. Wilmore and Hughes will write and executive produce together; Hughes will star.
The project focuses on character London Jones (Hughes), who after getting dumped by her boyfriend in England, comes to America to find success, herself, and maybe even love, according to NBC.
In general, a “put pilot” practically guarantees a show will be picked up to series, as by the nature of the agreement the pilot must air as either a special or a series. Should the network, NBC in the case, decide not to air it in any capacity, the network will have to pay substantial money to the studio. Of course, in this case, the studio is also owned by NBC.

Swiftly following his suspenseful home invasion thriller, The Intruder, director Deon Taylor delivers Black & Blue: a chase and evade, corrupt cop action flick that’s pithy but by-the-numbers due to flat characters, slack execution and a banal central concept, yet is bolstered slightly by a well-paced plot.
The set up introduces Naomi Harris’ rookie cop Alicia, who is accosted by racist police officers while out on a morning jog. This opening suggests a compelling drama with substantial issues is about to unfurl, but these themes are soon supressed as the story curtails into clichéd urban crime thriller terrain with a double-crossing cop plot.
Alicia accidentally films a murder on her body camera and is then hunted by the killers who want the footage before she can share it. What follows is a fast and flawed action/chase confrontation that repeatedly derails then re-finds its feet to potter on perfunctorily before stumbling once again.

Jussie Smollett’s legal defense team has to do three things to save him from conviction: Discredit the main witnesses against him, rebut the police theory that he staged a hoax to get a raise, and explain a $3,500 check.
That’s the summation from defense attorneys who spoke with TheWrap — and Mark Geragos, one of Smollett’s legal advisers, has already signaled that he agrees, at least in part. Police suggested they had an open-and-shut case against Smollett when they charged him last week with filing a false police report.
