Well this is interesting. Syfy has said repeatedly that they didn't want a simple re-tread of the classic Terry Gilliam film in their 12 Monkeys TV series, and even though their first trailer looks exactly like it, they're at least changing up our perceptions of the characters. It's been announced that Emily Hampshire (a female if that was unclear) has snagged the role originally played by Brad Pitt (not a female).
I'm never opposed to seeing some creative casting choices for roles, even for well known properties. I've always been a big proponent of giving the best actor for the job the role (regardless of appearances). So hopefully, that's what Syfy is doing here by casting Emily Hampshire in the role Brad Pitt occupied in the film, and not some PR stunt to gather attention:
Emily Hampshire (Cosmpolis, All The Wrong Reasons) has been cast in a major role in the Syfy series 12 Monkeys.

Karine Vanasse is ready for take-off, but she's certainly not flighty. No, that's not a reference to her one-season TV series "Pan Am." Instead, she's about to fly to Montreal after a whirlwind weekend at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, and an ongoing stint in L.A. shooting her recurring role on ABC's "Revenge."
With her effervescent charm, luminous smile and laser-focused doe eyes, the 29-year-old Drummondville, Quebec native is celebrating the release of "All the Wrong Reasons," a film best-known for its all-Canadian cast, and for being one of Cory Monteith's final projects. In the film, Vanasse and Monteith play an estranged husband and wife, who battle intimacy issues following the suicide of her character's sister. But to the always on-the-go Vanasse, the power of the award-winning film extends far beyond Monteith's legacy.

Cory Monteith may forever be remembered most for his role on Glee, but the late actor wanted more when it came to his acting career. In one of his two last films, All the Wrong Reasons, he plays a manager of a grocery store whose marriage is falling apart under the strain of his wife's post-traumatic stress disorder. "He was this big TV star who chose to do this small Canadian film and not everybody does that," Karine Vanasse, who plays Monteith's wife, said at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. "For him, he wanted to show his team, himself and his fans that he had all this other potential to develop and he wanted his career to maybe head in that direction." She said,...

Steve McQueen’s highly anticipated 12 Years a Slave made its unofficial debut out in Telluride before its official bow at Tiff, and the reviews have been nothing but impressive so far – you can read our own review from Toronto here.
With the festival wrapping last night, it was of course time for the annual awards to be handed out, with the top three categories put to the vote from festivalgoers for the Blackberry’s People Choice Awards. And it should come as no surprise that 12 Years a Slave, which is based on a true story, has walked away as the People’s Choice Award winner.
Chiwetel Ejiofor stars in the lead, with a terrific ensemble led by Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Sarah Paulson, Paul Giamatti, Scoot McNairy, Michael Kenneth Williams, Garrett Dillahunt, Quvenzhané Wallis, Dwight Henry, Ruth Negga, Alfre Woodard, and newcomer Lupita Nyong’o.

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave won the Toronto International Film Festival’s (Tiff) Blackberry People’s Choice Award in a significant development that places the hard-hitting drama among an elite club.
While McQueen’s film starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender includes brutal sequences that may upset Academy voters, the imminent Fox Searchlight release (Oct 18) is already among the vanguard of what is shaping up to be a season of rare quality.
Gravity, Prisoners, Rush, Dallas Buyers Club and Philomena have all drawn strong to exceptional reviews and two of these films — Philomena and Prisoners — were runners-up in this year’s category.
Captain Phillips has also excited passions in advance of its Sept 27 world premiere screening as opening night film of the New York Film Festival, yet few will overlook the significance of the Tiff prize.

’12 Years a Slave’: 2013 Toronto Film Festival People’s Choice Award winner (photo: Chiwetel Ejiofor in ’12 Years a Slave’) 12 Years a Slave, already touted as a top contender for the 2014 Best Picture Academy Award, was the not unexpected People’s Choice Award winner at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival. Steve McQueen’s biopic tells the story of Solomon Northup, a freeborn 19th-century black man from Upstate New York who is kidnapped and sold as a slave in the American South. Twelve years later, he succeeds in regaining his freedom. Fox Searchlight will be releasing 12 Years a Slave, surely to be plugged as a people- and Oscar-friendly Triumph of the Human Spirit tale, on October 18 in North America. The prestigious 12 Years a Slave cast features Chiwetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup, in addition to Michael Fassbender (Steve McQueen’s lead in both Hunger and Shame), Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano,...

Such as the case back in 2008 with Slumdog Millionaire, Fox Searchlight have a hit on their hands and if all goes according to Moneyball-esque stats and Oscar prognosticators measuring stick, Hunger and Shame director Steve McQueen appears to be the lead favorite now for a taste of Oscar gold. After heavy Telluride buzz, 12 Years a Slave beat out Gravity, dark horse fav Prisoners, Dallas Buyers Club and the crowd-friendly Philomena to be crowned as Tiff’s BlackBerry People’s Choice Award. Here’s the complete list of other winners which includes the resurgence of Pawel Pawlikowski – who claimed the Fipresci prize in the Special Presentations section for Ida.

After playing teenager Finn Hudson on Glee for four years, Cory Monteith finally seemed ready to move on to roles more suited to his actual 31 years. until, of course, his life and career were cut short by his death in July. In addition to planning to return for another season of Glee Monteith had filmed two movies in his native Canada, and though the conclusion of Finn's story on Glee will happen without him, Monteith's final film roles are both preparing to premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this week. The first of them, McCanick, has him as a felon on the run, but the other one, All The Wrong Reasons, puts him in a role much more realistic-- and more similar to the grown-up life he never got to have. In the trailer for All The Wrong Reasons above, which premiered at Entertainment Weekly, Monteith is instantly, believably adult...

I’m not even a regular Glee watcher, and I still feel like I knew Cory Monteith. It’s heartbreaking to see footage of the guileless young star, who died July 13 of a drug overdose in Vancouver, even in a gritty movie trailer like McCanick. The violent thriller premieres at the Toronto Film Festival next month (along with another unreleased Monteith project, All The Wrong Reasons), and in the film, Monteith plays “a Simon Weeks, a drug addicted criminal whose release from prison triggers paranoia and violence in narcotics detective Eugene “Mack” McCanick (David Morse), who has a secret from his past that only Weeks can expose.” Yikes.
The movie costars Ciaran Hinds, Mike Vogel, Rachel Nichols, Trevor Morgan, and Aaron Yoo, who I loooooved in Disturbia.

An image from one of Cory Monteith's final two movies, "McCanick," has made its way online. In the film, Monteith plays a criminal drug addict who gets hunted down by narcotics director Eugene "Mack" McCanick (played by David Morse) and his partner Floyd (Mike Vogel).

Cory Monteith's last film, "McCanick", will join this year's Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) lineup, organizers announced Tuesday.
The "Glee" actor will also star in"All The Wrong Reasons", also premiering at Tiff.
In "McCanick", Monteith plays a drug addict who is sent to jail for murder. David Morse plays the cop who chases him down after he is paroled.
The publicity photo for "McCanick" shows a scruffy, long-haired Monteith, one very different than audiences are used to seeing on "Glee".
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, director Josh C. Waller said he was hesitant to cast Monteith in the role, but "when I met with him, he wanted to do it so badly. He was very vocal about his past, and said he wanted to tap into things from his youth that he hadn’t been able to use as an actor yet.”

When news broke late Saturday night that Glee star Cory Monteith had been found dead in his Vancouver hotel room, fans were shocked at the news of the thirty-one-year-old actor’s untimely death. Monteith, known for playing lovable jock-turned-artist Finn Hudson on the Fox hit musical, seemed as bubbly and healthy as the young adult he portrayed. In his downtime from Glee, Monteith was apparently busy building up his film career, including a role in Josh C. Waller‘s upcoming McCanick, a gritty crime drama. The story focuses on a drug-addicted street hustler (Monteith) who clashes with a detective determined to take him down (David Morse). Waller says he was initially reluctant to cast Monteith in the role, but the actor’s determination to get the part, as well as his connection to the role, changed the director’s mind. Monteith was very open about his past problems with substance abuse and addiction in his youth, and...

Cory Monteith played James Ascher, a store manager whose wife is struggling with Ptsd, in the upcoming ensemble drama "All the Wrong Reasons," written and directed by Gia Milani. A conscious departure from "Glee," it was one of the late star's final film roles.
In a heartfelt tribute to Monteith for Entertainment Weekly, Milani remembers the last time she saw the 31-year-old actor, who was found dead of a heroin and alcohol overdose in his Vancouver hotel room over the weekend.
"When I last saw him at the screening, he looked super fit, had a lot of energy," she writes. "I think that's why this is such a tremendous shock. He seemed to be doing so well."
She adds that Monteith was excited about the opportunity to play a "really complex character, and someone his age, which he hadn't done in a long time." More importantly, he was enthusiastic about the final product.
