Director Jamie Adams reflects on early relationships and the ghosts of unresolved separation in his latest film, She Is Love. The story revolves around an unexpected reunion, when Patricia (Haley Bennett) arrives at a country hotel in Cornwall that is run by her ex-husband, Idris (Sam Riley) and his girlfriend Louise (Marisa Abela). As if fate has thrust them together, Patricia and Sam struggle through the awkwardness of their shared history, in the hope of finding a resolution.
In conversation with Eye For Film, Adams discussed his interest in improvisation, its limits, and using cinema to explore ideas that are neither possible nor pragmatic.
Paul Risker: There’s the story we see onscreen, and there’s the story in the making of the film. Are there any stories within the story that come to mind?
Jamie Adams: The first thing is the pandemic affected us.

An estranged couple reunites after ten years in Jamie Adams’ skeletal “She is Love.” That previous sentence both serves as the logline and entire plot for Adams’s lean improv-heavy dramedy, which features Sam Riley, Haley Bennett, and Marisa Abela adrift in a series of convoluted scenes that the trio attempt to “yes, and…” their way through. Anyone with a passing familiarity with Adams’s style — quirky character studies almost devoid of plot that, nonetheless, attract talent — will find little new here.

2023 is in full swing with chaos (Cocaine Bear opens February 24) and sequels (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania opens February 17; Magic Mike’s Last Dance opens February 10) doing their thing to get those box-office numbers rising. Along with that studio fare, however, are a ton of smaller titles doing their best to keep up too. Hopefully your local theater has a screen or two to spare for some of these posters to grace the lobby–if Avatar also decides to slow down, of course.
Edge-to-edge text
Is the poster for 88 easy to read? No. Not at all. But I’ll be honest: that’s kind of why I like it. Because amongst those letters and numbers depicting financial gibberish are actor names like Orlando Jones and William Fichtner. Think of it as one of those memes where the first 3 names you see are the ones who will grace your screen when you buy a ticket.

Is it possible, these days, to make a film about a romantic relationship without making a romcom? The template for the latter has become so firmly established that some viewers – and some critics – clearly struggle with the concept of approaching the subject differently, and this may account for some of the unflattering reviews which She Is Love has received. It’s a real shame because there’s some excellent material here, and if it doesn’t make you laugh all the way through, well, that’s probably because it isn’t intended to.
Hayley Bennett, impressive as always, plays Patricia, a US-based literary talent scout revisiting her old haunts in Cornwall for a meeting. Sam Riley, who made a huge impression in Control back in 2006 but hasn’t had a role worthy of his talents for some years, plays Idris, a songwriter who operates a boutique hotel with his young actress partner Louise.

Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” is close to securing its lead.
Multiple sources tell Variety that Marisa Abela, one of the stars of HBO and BBC drama “Industry,” is a frontrunner to play Winehouse. It’s believed Abela is in discussions, though the role isn’t yet locked in and a small group of other actors are also believed to be in the mix.
As previously reported, the role was always intended to go to a newcomer, and producers have been keen to hire a fresh face rather than go down the pop-star casting route.

If Ted Lasso were a film executive, he’d probably resemble someone like Marc Goldberg, the CEO of U.K. producer-distributor Signature Entertainment.
Goldberg’s favorite football team since he was a kid has been West Ham United, and — in a cosmic alignment befitting the popular Apple TV Plus series — the club’s owner, David Sullivan, happens to be a stakeholder in Signature.
In Goldberg’s early career as a DVD salesman, he managed to convince a corporate client that buying an executive box at West Ham would come in handy when entertaining customers. In 2010, when Sullivan bought the team, the new owner asked for feedback from corporate members on ways to improve the club, which super-fan Goldberg readily provided in an off-the-cuff email.

Haley Bennett, the first recipient of EnergaCamerimage Film Festival’s New Generation Acting Award, will follow Joe Wright’s “Cyrano” with Whoopi Goldberg-produced “Till,” about the infamous murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy lynched in Mississippi in 1955 after being accused of “offending” white woman Carolyn Bryant. Her husband and his half-brother were acquitted, but later confessed to the murder.
“In America, it was a reckoning, but I didn’t have a deep knowledge of it. I thought: ‘I can’t be the only one.’ Bringing this story to light again, at the time when we desperately need it, was important to me,” Bennett tells Variety at the festival in Toruń, Poland, admitting that playing Bryant meant “carrying around hate and fear, paranoia and anger.”
“I don’t want to live in ignorance. If I can learn something about the history of America, then I am not standing still.

Exclusive: UK distributor-producer Signature Entertainment has been re-acquired by its original stakeholders after being bought by completion guarantee firm Ffi in early 2018.
Company founder Marc Goldberg said today: “Myself and the other shareholders are delighted to have full control of the company again after our sale three years ago. We are excited for what the business can achieve across distribution, production and international sales over the coming years.”
Following the buy-back, Goldberg is the largest shareholder, alongside West Ham soccer club owner David Sullivan, Jon Bourdillon (COO) Gareth Williams (Fd), Elizabeth Williams (Director of Acquisitions and Development) and Claire Loewenthal (Head of Marketing).
We’re told the sale came about due to Ffi wanting “to focus on their core businesses which support both pre and post production.” Soon after buying Signature, Ffi was itself bought by Miami-based investment firm 777 Partners.
London and LA-based Signature currently has 24 staff and tells us...

Exclusive: Haley Bennett has joined the cast of Chinonye Chukwu’s and Orion Pictures’ Till, starring opposite Whoopi Goldberg, Frankie Faison and Jalyn Hall. The film is currently shooting in Atlanta. Chukwu is writing and directing.
The film tells the story of Mamie Till-Mobley, whose pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son Emmett Louis Till became a galvanizing moment that helped lead to the creation of the civil rights movement. As Time Magazine reported, “…thanks to a mother’s determination to expose the barbarousness of the crime, the public could no longer pretend to ignore what they couldn’t see.” Mamie’s decision to have an open casket at Emmett’s funeral, and to have Jet magazine publish David Jackson’s funeral photos, was driven by her motivation to ensure people everywhere knew what had happened to her son.
