A former NBA player and actor was sentenced to 90 years to life in prison on Friday for a series of violent sexual assaults.
The Los Angeles Police Department said an investigation into Rashid Byrd began in 2019. A victim reported she had been sexually assaulted.
“During their investigation, detectives learned [that] in 2010, Byrd was convicted of sexual assault involving a different victim,” the LAPD release stated. “Detectives also discovered that Byrd had been arrested for sexually assaulting a young woman in Washington State in 2005.”
The 7’1″ Byrd charmed his victims at first, then turned violent.
“He started as a charmer, playing up his status as an athlete and pseudo-celebrity, but that quickly faded into rapes and violence,” said Detective Dara Brown, who served as the lead investigator on the case.
Byrd played 22 games for the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League in the 2008-09 season. He also appeared in the 2008 Will Ferrell-starring basketball comedy,...

André 3000 stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in late January, during which he taped a “Colbert Questionert” segment that didn’t air until Thursday night (February 8th). During the series of questions, the rapper-turned-flutist revealed some interesting tidbits, including how he nearly joined the Fast and Furious family and once killed an ant farm.
After André couldn’t come up with a favorite action movie, Colbert probed him on why he hasn’t been in a Fast and Furious film, saying, “I could see you driving a fast car, off a cliff or something into a boat.”
In response, André said that he actually auditioned for the franchise, but another Atlanta rapper took his spot. “I would have, but I think Ludacris took the role,” he explained. “I actually tried out. I tried out for Fast and Furious and Ludacris actually took the role.”

Season 2 of last summer’s hit breakout series “The Bear” is set to premiere on Hulu on Thursday, June 22. After a tumultuous return to his family’s hole-in-the-wall Chicago restaurant, chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White) and his staff transform the greasy sandwich joint into a first-class dining experience after he discovers the slush fund his brother left behind. Despite having the extra money to make his dreams a reality, the future proves to be both a personal and professional challenge for Carmy and the crew.
Watch the trailer for Season 2 of “The Bear”:
Beginning on June 14, the new series continuation of the beloved film “The Full Monty” arrives on Hulu. It’s 25 years later and the men and women of Sheffield, England, are in reboot mode, navigating life and family. The original 1997 movie focused on a group of down-on-their-luck, blue-collar men who put on a strip show to make ends meet.

Will Ferrell is no stranger to sports comedies, with the likes of “Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby,” “Semi-Pro,” and “Blades Of Glory” already under his belt. Now he’ll tackle territory similar to “Happy Gilmore” and “Caddyshack.” Deadline reports that Ferrell will headline an upcoming golf comedy series about a pro golfer who becomes the controversial face of a new league competing with the PGA.

Exclusive: In what is shaping up to become one of the biggest TV comedy packages to hit the marketplace in awhile, Will Ferrell & Jessica Elbaum’s Gloria Sanchez Productions and Rian Johnson & Ram Bergman’s T-Street have teamed up to develop a comedy TV series as a starring vehicle for Ferrell, I have learned.
No one would comment but I hear the series revolves around a professional golfer who becomes the face of a controversial new league competing with the PGA.
While fictional, the story would inevitably draw parallels to the controversial Liv Golf startup. It also evokes one of Ferrell’s signature movies, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. The series is in a similar tone, I hear, bringing Ferrell back to the sports arena he also explored in Blades of Glory and Semi-Pro.

Fitness personality and television icon Jack Lalanne is getting the biopic treatment, both in nonfiction and narrative forms.
Mark Wahlberg and his Unrealistic Ideas banner will partner with Wonderfilm Media and Lalanne’s widow, Elaine, and the Lalanne family on a documentary feature and a narrative film about the fitness pioneer.
Before wellness was christened an industry and fitness deemed a lifestyle, Lalanne was an exercise and nutrition guru. After opening a gym in Oakland in the 1930s (often credited as the nation’s first fitness club), he began to evangelize the benefits of personal health, later hosting the fitness TV show The Jack Lalanne Show from 1951 to 1985. A longtime bodybuilder, Lalanne also became synonymous with his feats of strength, including, at 60 years old, swimming to Alcatraz while handcuffed.

Comedian Hasan Minhaj delivered a brutal indictment of the state of award shows, trade journalism, Armie Hammer and the indie film ecosystem at the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
Streaming live on YouTube — a focal point of mockery in Minhaj’s monologue — the annual Santa Monica gathering started off on a bitter note. First in line for execution was IFC, the cable channel that previously aired the awards franchise but did not renew its licensing deal.
“We’re doing this super indie tonight,” Minhaj said. “We literally don’t have a distributor. The independent film channel did not want the independent film awards.”
He then pointed out what the network chose to air instead: “Semi-Pro,” a 2008 feature starring Will Ferrell and Woody Harrelson.
In discussing the night’s big nominees, Minhaj turned his attention to the Luca Guadagnino film “Bones and All.” Minhaj wondered how many films Hollywood can make...

Will Ferrell was, at one point, about as big of a star as one can hope to find in the world of comedy. Following his legendary stint on "Saturday Night Live," the actor had great success in movies such as "Anchorman" and "Step Brothers" in the first decade of the 2000s. But in 2008, Ferrell led an all-star cast that also included the likes of Woody Harrelson, Andre 3000, Will Arnett, and many other famous comedy faces that audiences know and love in a basketball comedy called "Semi-Pro." It was a movie with all the talent in the world which, unfortunately, didn't quite live up to expectations at the time of its release.
While the film topped the box office on its opening weekend back in March of 2008, it topped out at $44 million worldwide against a reported budget of $55 million. Critics also were not terribly kind to the sports comedy at the time.

If you've seen anything about "Cocaine Bear," then you've been introduced to Cokey, the titular ursine entity that stumbles across a brick of cocaine in the woods and promptly goes on a killing spree in search of one more fix. As producers Lord and Miller told me in my interview with them, not only did no real-life bears do cocaine on set, but no real-life bears were involved at all. Cokey is a creation of Wētā FX, and while her distinct look comes from the artists there, she was also represented on set by motion capture performer Allan Henry, a veteran of movies like "Avengers: Endgame," "Jungle Book," and the "Planet of the Apes" trilogy.

The Golden State Warriors had a new player out on the court ahead of the team's March 8 game against the Los Angeles Clippers, and he was…Jackie Moon? Well, sort of. Will Ferrell dressed up as the character from his 2008 movie Semi-Pro and joined the Warriors for a warm-up at the Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif. Donning his Flint Tropics uniform, the actor practiced guarding Klay Thompson, shooting free throws (in Moon's underhand "granny style") with Stephen Curry and even sank the ball from half court at the Chase Center. So, how did the Warriors go about recruiting Moon, er, Ferrell? Coach Steve Kerr explained how it all came to be during a post-game press...

“There’s a raccoon loose in the building.”
That could have been the tag line for the warmup portion of tonight’s game between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Clippers, which was broadcast on TNT. There was certainly something amiss.
As the Warriors took the court, the last man out of the tunnel was a little chubbier and a lot hairier than the rest. He was also wearing a Flint Tropics uniform.

When you’re a streaming service, there’s only one way to celebrate the New Year. And that’s by IP mining to bring back a franchise that had no business in coming back!
With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. If nothing else, telling a story about 2022 from a future perspective might play well.
Aside from Himyf, there aren’t any other Hulu original series to speak of. Instead, Hulu is opting to once again beef up its film library. Will Arnett will replace Armie Hammer in Taika Waititi’s “Next Goal Wins.”
Hammer’s exit comes after the actor was accused by multiple women of sexual assault. He denies the claims and says any sexual relationships were consensual, but the Los Angeles Police Department has launched an investigation. In the wake of the scandal, Hammer was fired from several films and series, including the Jennifer Lopez rom-com “Shotgun Wedding” and a Paramount Plus show about the behind-the-scenes action on “The Godfather.” Hammer also exited the upcoming Broadway production of “The Minutes.” He will appear in the Agatha Christie adaptation “Death on the Nile,” which opens in February.
“Next Goal Wins” is based on the 2015 documentary of the same name, which follows the true story of Dutch coach Thomas Rongen, who attempts the nearly impossible task of turning the American Samoa soccer team from perennial losers into winners. Waititi also...

Today is March 1st, which means we have a whole new set of titles to tell you about that just dropped on Netflix. The streaming service has 54 new movies/TV shows from nearly every major studio, including Warner Bros., Paramount and Sony, and while that number is still ten less than what we got last March, there’s far more original content on the service than there was a year ago. So, trust me when I say you’ve got plenty of options.
So many options, in fact, that I often find myself browsing for so long that I can’t decide on what to watch until it gets too late and I go to bed instead. First world problems, right?
In any case, below you’ll find the full list as well as a few descriptions of some personal favorites. Or some that I just felt like commenting on.

Netflix is adding a robust line-up of popular programs to its slate in March.
In addition to rom-coms like Matthew Mcconaughey’s “Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past,” “He’s Just Not That Into You” and “Always a Bridesmaid,” the streamer is also adding a few classics like “Goodfellas” and “The Shawshank Redemption” starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. The latter film also serves as an analogy for actor Macaulay Culkin’s journey to freedom, according to his Esquire interview.
Original Netflix shows coming to the platform next month include “Lost Girls,” “Crip Camp” and Season 3 of “Elite.” Based on a true story, “Lost Girls” follows a mother who, in her desperate search to find her missing daughter, helps to uncover a string of unsolved murders. Amy Ryan, Gabriel Byrne and Thomasin Mckenzie make up the cast.

Here's what's new on Netflix in March 2020! We've got a complete list of what's leaving, too.
Normally the big story for each month of Netflix new releases are the exciting batch of Netflix original series and movies arriving. For Netflix's new releases for March 2020, things are a little bit different. Yes, there are some cool originals here but...look at those movies!
March 1 sees the arrival of Corpse Bride, The Shawshank Redemption, There Will Be Blood, and Goodfellas! Martin Scorsese likely can't unilaterally decide when and where his movies stream, but it is a happy coincidence that Goodfellas will now exist alongside The Irishman.
As for those Netflix originals...Ozark is the biggest returning hit in March. The story of a very corrupt family airs its third season on March 27. Also of note are Castlevania season 3 (March 5), Altered Carbon: Resleeved (March 19). But really after Goodfellas, nothing else was really necessary.

The streaming sector may be growing ever more crowded as increasing numbers of providers embrace the video-on-demand model of content distribution, but industry pioneer Netflix continues to dominate in terms of original content and more than double the subscribers of its nearest competitor, Disney+. And in March of 2020, those 62 million subscribers have a lot of compelling movies and series to look forward to, both original and imported.

When Woody Harrelson was first offered a major part in War for the Planet of the Apes, he had visions of stepping into the skin of a primate.

Kevin Spacey, Steven Seagal and, erm, Kangaroo Jack: they all nabbed the box office top spot last decade...
By the end of the 2000s, getting number one at the American box office was a valuable marketing commodity. As such, studios pumped more and more money into making sure they at least had a great opening weekend for their product.
The consequence of this was that it was harder and harder for smaller and quirkier films to take a brief spot in the sun. Certainly towards the second half of the decade, it seems that the number one movie each week was pre-ordinained in a marketing meeting somewhere.
Still, there were some films that have since fallen out of public view that clawed their way to number one. How many of these do you remember?
