Sometimes one role can define an actor’s career. Sam Elliott plays such an actor in late life, facing his own mortality and coming to grips with his life and career, in the sometimes funny, sometimes touching drama The Hero. The Hero is an intimate personal drama that draws on universal human concerns in a story that is by turns comic, bittersweet or moving. Writer/director Brett Haley’s thoughtful film has the same feel of authenticity as his previous one, I’LL See You In My Dreams, in which Elliott co-starred with Blythe Danner. Like that film, The Hero is a life-affirming film that portrays older adults as fully rounded individuals living in this present world instead of two-dimensional types, human beings with brains, a sense of humor and romantic lives.

It would be tough finding a harder working actor than Liev Schreiber who has successfully transitioned from supporting roles in movies to his very own TV show, playing fixer Ray Donovan on the Showtime series for five seasons. He’s received four Golden Globe nominations and two Emmy nominations playing that role.
In between seasons he’s found the time to make Chuck, a movie about the famed “Bayonne Brawler,” Chuck Wepner, whose career was documented in the Espn “30 for 30” doc, The Real Rocky. Besides being the New Jersey Heavyweight Champion in the ‘70s, Wepner famously went 15 rounds with Muhammad Ali, but his somewhat tragic story was also the inspiration for Sylvester Stallone to make Rocky.

On March 1, Ava DuVernay’s independent film distribution company Array kicked off Women’s History Month the right way: by hosting a 12-hour Twitter take-over that united female filmmakers for a day of awesome, virtual interaction.
More than 30 filmmakers participated in the third “Rebel-a-Thon,” including DuVernay, Amma Asante, Julie Dash, Gina Price-Bythewood, and Mira Nair, with actor Kerry Washington adding her voice in support of the Twitter gathering. Array’s mission is to amplify the voices and visibility of underrepresented filmmakers. Spotlighted during the take-over was the company’s newest acquisition, Egyptian-American director Heidi Saman’s newest film “Namour,” which hits Netflix on March 15.
DuVernay, busy at work on her “A Wrinkle in Time” adaptation, checked in with nothing but positive vibes.

Kicking off with an updated version of the ‘Choose Life’ speech, the first official trailer for Trainspotting 2 is here and the only bad thing about it is that we have to wait till January for the full movie. Checking in on Renton (Ewan McGregor), Sickboy (Jonny Lee Miller), Spud (Ewan Bremmer), and Begbie (Robert Carlyle) twenty years after the events of the first movie, nothing much is known about the story, only that is actually just loosely based on Irvine Welsh’s sequel, Porno, to the original novel. This first trailer is absolutely glorious, a joyful return of characters just about everybody knows and loves, and you just know Danny Boyle and co. will deliver a cracker of a movie to kick start the new year. Keepers, a new psychological horror movie revolving around a trio of lonesome Scottish lighthouse workers, has located its primary cast in Gerard Butler, Peter Mullan and Joe Alwyn.
First reported by Deadline, Danish filmmaker Kristoffer Nyholm (The Killing, Taboo) has been appointed at the helm, and we understand that a UK shoot in early 2017 is already in the cards.
Evoking comparisons to John Carpenter movies of old, Keepers is pitched as a bleak horror-thriller that chronicles the story of three lighthouse managers: Thomas (Mullan), James (Butler) and Donald (Alwyn). Checking in for another six-week stint on the bitter-cold Scottish coast, Nyholm’s thriller taps into feelings of paranoia and frustration that so often go hand-in-hand with isolation. This, coupled with the fact that the aforementioned trio only have each other for company, tees up a complex dynamic as they encounter “something unexpected and potentially life-changing.”

Barry Jenkins is about to become the next big thing, but he’s been here before. “Moonlight,” which he wrote and directed, has been celebrated as the year’s major discovery and the ultimate achievement in modern black filmmaking. That’s nothing new for Jenkins: Eight years ago, the director faced similar acclaim on a smaller scale with his 2008 debut, “Medicine for Melancholy.” However, the lag between his first two features is a testament to Jenkins’ quiet determination — and to a culture that had yet to catch up. It takes time for the world to recognize a genuine vision.
“I think a filmmaker like me isn’t on the outside in the same way that I was in 2008, even though the work itself feels very, very outsiderish,” he said. “It’s completely fucking crazy, because it didn’t used to be that way.” While “Moonlight” marks Jenkins’ transition into a major artist,...

45 years ago, one of the most divisive shows ever made debuted and became the biggest hit of the 1970s. All In The Family hit the airwaves in 1971 and created a maelstrom of controversy. The non-pc humor of the show would never be tolerated today. However, was the show really racially insensitive or was it just using humor to cast some light on the ignorance and prejudices of the world?
Based on the Brit-com Till Death Do Us Part (which had debuted in 1965), the CBS series All In The Family (1971-1979) was a no-holds barred sitcom about working-class bigot Archie Bunker, an unapologetic racist, homophobic, sexist lout from Astoria, NY. Archie had an opinion on everything, and never failed to offend everyone. The character used inflammatory, non-pc language on a weekly basis. He regularly squared off with his liberal Democrat son-in law Mike in heated arguments about minorities, immigrants, women, non-Christians...

In 2004’s Bridget Jones: Edge of Reason, we saw Bridget (Renee Zellweger) seemingly find true love with her Mr. Darcy (Colin Firth), but, as we’ve learned, in Bridget’s world, nothing ever runs smoothly.
Case in point: It’s 10 years later and in Bridget Jones’s Baby, she’s 43 and again single, having seen her relationship with uptight lawyer Mark Darcy fall apart a few years prior. That isn’t to say the rest of Bridge’s life is in shambles, though. Quite the contrary, in fact.
She’s at her ideal weight, still has her great friends and is now a successful news producer, working for a popular news program. She doesn’t necessarily lament the fact she doesn’t have a man in her life or that her child bearing years may be quickly fading.
Instead, she’s living life large – and that’s when Bridget...

Checking in with a paltry $48 million at the domestic box office, Legendary’s blockbuster adaptation of Warcraft struggled to have much of a presence during this year’s summer blockbuster season – and that’s despite the studio bumping Duncan Jones’ tentpole from its original March release date.
Alas, a strong performance in oversea markets – China in particular – will all but ensure that the feature doesn’t go down as an out-and-out flop, but we’d only be sugar-coating the situation if we didn’t say that Warcraft disappointed across the board.
That hasn’t quelled Jones’ interest in a direct sequel, though, after revealing in an interview with Thrillist that, should the opportunity of Warcraft 2 present itself, he would jump at that chance.

Batman v Superman + a little Wonder Woman dominated the weekend with a critic proof opening record for March. The test will be how well it can hold with terrible reviews and lackluster word of mouth. It's unlikely to have the staying power of something like Deadpool for example, which is still in the top ten 7 weeks after its debut. On the other hand it has free reign for a while with no direct competition coming for one entire month. Captain America Civil War arrives on April 8th. The question is this: Will Marvel's superheroes vs superheroes blockbuster be hurt by people feeling all "bleh" about Batman v Superman? Casual moviegoers rarely know the difference between studios and filmmakers and general history of quality, you know.

Perhaps the most inside-baseball of films at Sundance this year, Jj Garvine and Tai Parquet’s Film Hawk is an intimate look at film consultant extraordinaire Bob Hawk. American Horror Story has been a spectacular showcase for female characters and the actors playing those roles. Jessica Lange was a revelation. Lily Rabe stole season two. Season three was an ensemble of female characters. Season four's most affecting parts were concerning the women of the Freak Show. And this season, the female character that deserves the most attention and praise just happens to be played by a man. There's glamour and grandeur, acid wit and tender compassion... Liz Taylor is possibly the best example of what American Horror Story can create for a female character, but it took an actor with the fearless skill of Denis O'Hare to pull it off, with a little help from the wonderful,...

Please grab your hover board, because where we're going, we don't need roads. Welcome to a new era of "Pretty Little Liars," where the squad finally look their age and no one is being murdered. Haha, kidding: we already have one dead body and the season has barely started. Sigh, this show.
The liars might be older, wiser and trolling around some weird place called "Freeform," but they still haven't figured out how not to be terrorized by a hooded vigilante. With that in mind, catch up with Spencer, Aria, Emily and Hanna in our recap below -- plus, find out which character is six feet under.
Checking in With the Little (Er, Big?) Liars
Hanna: Pll's most fashionable it-girl is working in fashion, and good news: she's engaged! The bad news? The lucky man's name isn't Caleb, because apparently they broke up, which means our lives are over.

American Horror Story's shared universe aspect comes into its own this week with the fun return of a Coven character...
This review contains spoilers.
1.11 Battle Royale
It took Ryan Murphy five seasons and a return to a familiar stomping ground to bring American Horror Story full circle. The recycling of Pepper last season was a nice touch, and the freak show or the asylum was a common destination for unfortunate microcephalics back in the dark days, so to have the character move from one to the other makes sense. However, there wasn't a lot of modern crossing-over, aside from using the same actors. That's changed with Hotel. Whether it's the La location or the modern setting, old familiar faces have been popping up (and usually dying horribly) within the confines of the Hotel Cortez.
Christine Estabrook's Marcie and Matt Ross's Dr. Charles Montgomery were surprise visitors,...

Checking in with her loyal followers, Chrissy Teigen took to her social media accounts to joke around about her pregnant body on Sunday (December 27).
The 30-year-old supermodel posted a photo of her bun in the oven and admitted that being knocked up has definitely posed some challenges physically.
Chrissy wrote, “Well well well, it’s almost like my new skin tag heard me making fun of the skin tag commercial I saw last week.” Teigen also previously teased that she and husband John Legend had chosen the name “Chubz” for their baby-on-the-way.

Episode ten of American Horror Story Hotel, She Gets Revenge, works spectacularly well...
This review contains spoilers.
5.10 She Gets Revenge
There aren't a lot of action sequences in American Horror Story, but when something violent happens, as it does a lot this season, they tend to make a lot of it. The Hotel Cortez has been home to some terrible things, and it's always very stylish to behold. However, the titular Hotel is not really the centre of sweetness. Sure, there have been a few nice moments her and there, but nothing consistent, or played as straight as the reunion between Liz Taylor and her long-lost son Dennis. Throughout the episode, Liz and Iris make plans to commit suicide, but first they have to tie up their loose ends to keep from becoming prisoners of the Cortez. For Iris, that's simple: she has to cancel her magazines...

This review contains spoilers.
5.9 She Wants Revenge
It's been a while since a season of American Horror Story has been this consistently good, both in terms of acting, characterisation, and general plotting. Hotel is a world full of interesting characters portrayed by interesting actors who make interesting choices. The collection of visual styles—high fashion, 1920s class, 90s funk, 60s glamour, 80s rocker chic, and a whole host of other distinctive looks—add colour and depth to a world in which there are people who are trapped out of their own time and people who are not constrained by the tick-tick-tock of the clock and the limitations of a mortal time frame. Evan Peters and Wes Bentley's characters make the perfect counterpoint in this week's fun, ever-stylish American Horror Story: Hotel...
This review contains spoilers.
5.8 The Ten Commandments Killer
There's not a lot of artifice or misdirection to Ryan Murphy's television shows. Very rarely does he pull off a surprise, and when he does pull off a surprise—see the Rubber Man from Murder House—it's not always very good or very welcome. I'm not even sure he's trying to spring surprises anymore, given just how long the show has telegraphed the very “twist” it unfurls this week. John Lowe, ace detective and the man obsessed with tracking down the Ten Commandments Killer, is actually the Ten Commandments Killer, which is something people have basically been discussing since the earliest stages of the season.
It's a predictable turn of events, and one that the show's been building on for multiple weeks,...

After spending plenty of time in the wasteland, harvesting crops, developing a settlement and surviving all manner of things meant to kill me, I'm done with Fallout 4. No, not the story, not even close to all the side quests...but I'm done nonetheless.
I'm fully aware that in writing this article, I'm more than likely to lose my entire staff here on Cinelinx. Yes, I'm surrounded by team members who are absolutely in love with Fallout, and when the game was initially announced, the excitement around Cinelinx was palpable. Over the last few years, I've found myself more and more enamored with large scale open-world RPGs (a genre I used to avoid in my younger days), so was also excited about delving into the Fallout 4 world.
Bethesda was kind enough to hook us up with early copies of the game, and I wasted little time getting into the swing of things.

Rarely has American Horror Story sustained its current level of momentum, quality and sheer entertainment...
This review contains spoilers.
5.7 Flicker
I absolutely love it when American Horror Story uses film-making style to help tell their story. It's not a question of the way the characters dress or the way the sets are displayed, but a question of actual technical techniques. A significant portion of Flicker is devoted to the life and times of a very young Countess—long before she was the Countess—as a fresh-faced Italian girl from Bensonhurst, Brooklyn who made her way out to Hollywood to become a star on the silver screen. A chance appearance as a harem girl leads to a meeting that will change young Countess's life forever as she finds herself wooed by the most famous lover in history, Rudolph Valentino (Finn Wittrock, playing a new role) and his glamorous wife,...

After Friday night's horrific terrorist attacks in Paris, major cinema chains and art-houses shuttered for the day on Saturday with word they would remain closed through Sunday at least. How terrifying can a baby really be? Er, pretty bloody terrifying judging by this week's episode of American Horror Story: Hotel...
This review contains spoilers.
5.6 Room 33
Lady Gaga's got a thing with her fans. She calls them her little monsters. It's a great fandom nickname, akin to the Kiss Army in terms of recognizability. After all, there's a whole episode of The Simpsons based around Gaga's schtick. It's the worst episode The Simpsons has ever done, but that's not the point. It's a known quantity, and I have no doubt it's been one of the inspirations for Countess's collection of creepy children, alongside The Shining and Village Of The Damned. They're actual little monsters, and she's their mother.
Of course, she's not just their adopted mother, she's the actual mother of at least one child, courtesy of the good butchers at Murder House. That's right, Countess...

Checking In Tracking the timeline of "The Affair," from week to week, is complicated even if you're just focusing on the events prior to Scotty's death. It's because the show isn't afraid to jump forward in time in fits and starts — sometimes an episode will pick up the day after the previous one. This time, we're looking at a leap of about six weeks — at least, it's been six weeks since Alison and Noah have seen each other. But when actual events, like Helen's release from prison or Alison's trip back to Montauk occur within that time frame, it's a little blurry; just as we've come to expect from this highly subjective show. Read More: Review: 'The Affair' Season 2 Episode 5 Hints at The Future She SaidHelen might be home from jail, but her "one minor lapse in judgment, one mildly embarrassing incident" (in mother Margaret's words), is still an issue.

Vampire children run amok among multiple plot-threads in this week's American Horror Story: Hotel episode...
This review contains spoilers.
5.5 Room Service
There's a lot going on in every episode of American Horror Story, and sometimes it makes it difficult to figure out just how to sit down and write a review like this. I mean, when the show is full of plot elements, how can you really focus on one? Last week was easy; a serial killer dinner party is always going to be attention-grabbing, but this week's episode had multiple fun things happening, so I guess I'll just stop waffling and go right to the vampire children.
Alex, the caring nurturer of Holden that she is, has been newly minted as a vampire by Countess Gaga, and she's having a little trouble adjusting. She's woozy, she's room temperature, her Pov shots are all blurry, she's vacant and clammy.

America's serial killers come out to play in American Horror Story Hotel's latest Halloween episode, Devil's Night...
This review contains spoilers.
5.4 Devil's Night
The announcement that Lady Gaga would play a prominent role in American Horror Story: Hotel was a bit of a divisive one. She was the centerpiece of a lot of the show's commercials, particularly one of her set to the memorable industrial tune Du Hast by Rammstein. No one knew what role she would play, or what her purpose would end up being, but everyone had an opinion about it, and most of those opinions seem to have been negative. It's easy to see why; Gaga's a pop star, not an actress. If she's been on stage or screen, it's been in the context of her musical talents first and foremost, not her ability to emote or cry on cue. I have to admit to having been pleasantly surprised.

"American Horror Story: Hotel" Episode:"Checking In" (Season 5, Episode 1) Grade: B Synopsis: Anyone creating a horror story set in a hotel has to pay homage to "The Shining," and that's exactly what Ryan Murphy's efforts to pay tribute felt like: a requisite rather than an opportunity to relish. Murphy's 2015 season premiere borrowed from a number of classic fright fests, but its references to "The Shining" were largely overt, like twins at the end of a hallway and referencing a mysterious room no one should go inside. Of course, this being a Ryan Murphy show, there's little to no build-up before we enter said room, but hey, at least the hotel is gorgeous. The carpeting is a nice (and somewhat subtle) nod, as are a few other ornate features. So "Checking In" fulfills its duty as a hotel horror show, but that's about it. Checking In"The Affair" is at its best when it's letting its characters breathe in the moment, dig into the truths hiding behind the lies of their relationships. Let's be blunt: This week was not "The Affair" at its best. Previously: Review: 'The Affair' Season 2 Episode 3 Finally Makes A Few Things Clear This is due largely to what we may look back on as the assassination of Helen as a likable character. Maura Tierney's commitment is total and incredible, and visually director John Dahl has a lot of fun with depicting her stoned and drunk gaze, but Helen's breakdown and subsequent arrest is over-the-top painful in a way that actively works against what the show excels at. She SaidYou know what's not fun? Getting divorced. We begin with Helen's perspective on their latest hearing, which doesn't go well; now that they're not mediating, Noah seems to be...

American Horror Story: Hotel delves into the past of Angela Bassett's character, Ramona Royale, in this week's ever-stylish episode...
This review contains spoilers.
5.3 Mommy
One of the many things American Horror Story is doing well this season is indulging in genre tropes. March's back story was accompanied by silent movie era film graphics and black and white film stock, and this episode's reveal of the history of Ramona Royale (Angela Bassett) is similarly fun. Rather than the silent era (or perhaps a very early talkie), Ramona is straight out of Quentin Tarantino's daydreams, a honky-blasting, gorgeous blaxploitation movie star supreme, and I mean that literally. Ramona Royale was a big B-movie star in her time, slapping around jive turkeys and sporting a boss baby Afro. It's a fun introduction to the character, who is very much a self-made woman, strong enough and beautiful enough to...

My boy Marvin Haynes and I just knew we were going to get caught, go to jail if lucky, get shot if not.
Nassau County in Long Island New York once (maybe still) had the highest paid police force in the country. Some of the homes in the Five Towns area of the county were so grand as a young child I thought they were department stores. That highly paid police force made sure nary a worry would the residents of Inwood, Lawrence, Cedarhurst, Woodmere, and Hewlett have.
There was very little crime in Nassau County and no black people. The only place you would see people of color in Five Towns were the shopping malls or the cotton fields. Cotton fields? Can’t say I ever saw them, but I was born free.

American Horror Story is finally living up to the horror in its title once again with the bloody and uber-stylish Hotel...
This review contains spoilers.
5.2 Chutes And Ladders
If you just looked at the name of this show, you'd expect something, well, horrifying. Murder House definitely had its moments, and Asylum might have been the most unsettling series of the show, but American Horror Story hasn't been particularly horrifying the last few seasons. Sure, they both had their moments—the Freaks recreation from last season, Twisty's whole everything, some of Dandy's moments, the rape Minotaur... but lately, the gore and grotesquerie has been as comical as it has been horrifying. The zombie chainsaw attack from Coven, anyone?
We're only two episodes into American Horror Story: Hotel, but it already seems like the show is going to aim more to be horrifying than horribly campy. Not that it's not campy,...

American Horror Story: Hotel, Episode 1, “Checking In”
Written by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk
Directed by Ryan Murphy
Episode 2, “Chutes and Ladders”
Written by Tim Minear
Directed by Bradley Buecker
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm (Et) on FX
It is an unfortunate responsibility to be a critic of American Horror Story, because in many ways it defies criticism, intentionally so. Toward the end of Hotel’s second episode, Iris (Kathy Bates) fills in John (Wes Bentley) about the history of the hotel’s creator, James Patrick March (Evan Peters). An extremely wealthy oilman, he built the Hotel Cortez in 1925 essentially because he could, as a “monument to excess and opulence, where he could satisfy his own peculiar appetites”. This is presumably, and fittingly, a comparison to series creator Ryan Murphy and co-creator Brad Falchuk, with the murderous and indulgent March standing in for the pair.

It may be fun, but there's a distinct sense that Scream Queens is spinning its wheels in its latest episode, Pumpkin Patch...
This review contains spoilers
1.5 Pumpkin Patch
As we've come to learn, Scream Queens is not quite the trigger-happy show we first thought it was. Despite plenty of cannon fodder, Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk (who scripted this week's episode, Pumpkin Patch) are more content to concentrate on the show's campus melodrama with the Red Devil mystery bubbling away nicely on the side. The most recent three victims have all been unknown supporting characters and their deaths seem to happen because the creators need to fulfil their promised one-killing-a-week quota. Pumpkin Patch, like Haunted House before it, puts emphasis on the mystery and cuts down on the bloodshed with mixed results.
The biggest conflict here was between Chanel #5 and Chanel herself, although their bad blood isn't something new.
