Over the years, awards shows have lost viewers’ interest — but, surprisingly, the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards were actually worth watching.
Here are the top moments from Wednesday night’s event, which aired live from Ubs Arena in Belmont Park, New York
Performance Of The Night
Benson Boone’s signature performance flips were so impressive we need to send him to the 2028 Olympics. If he doesn’t join the gymnastics team, he can at least sing at the global event.
The rising star had the performance of the night — he kicked off “Beautiful Things” on piano and worked the stage like a seasoned pro in a glittery navy number. His screeching vocals were top-notch and he had audience members, including Sabrina Carpenter, singing along to the pop-rock TikTok hit, He also won best alternative.
The honorable mention performance goes to fellow newcomer Teddy Swims. Though he didn’t get a regular performance slot,...

After Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” stop in Vienna was canceled due to a thwarted terrorist plot this month, Coldplay and Maggie Rogers paid tribute to the scrapped show with a cover of Swift’s “Love Story.”
Coldplay are in the midst of their long-running “Music of the Spheres Tour” across Europe, and they brought along Maggie Rogers to open for them. They began their first of three scheduled concerts at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadion as usual, but upon playing A Head Full of Dreams cut “Everglow” on their “B-stage,” Coldplay’s Chris Martin brought Maggie Rogers back out for a special cover.

“Africa to the world” has been a popular rallying cry from the continent and its diaspora as the global appetite for its culture has grown rapidly. Many hope to further extend its reach. Yet, as African artisans connect and build upon each other’s success, they’ve come to center themselves. Recently, Rema told Rolling Stone he’s resisting the urge to prioritize globalization in his music. “I’ll start with what I love,” he said. “The rest of the world can catch up.” Made in Africa is a monthly...

It’s been nearly 20 years since Coldplay released “Fix You,” and the task of fixing you must be difficult because they’re still singing it. On Thursday, they called in help from Shawn Mendes to sing “Fix You” with them at Munich’s Olympiastadion. “Sing it loud,” Mendes told the crowd at one point.

When Nigerian singer Rema emerged with one of the best Afrobeats songs of the late 2010s, “Dumebi,” he was a teenager and he sounded like it. He looked like it in the video, too, a sunny hang with other fashionable teens in the kind of bright casuals you could snag from Forever 21. His nasal trills exuded youthful innocence, even though he was coming on to some young woman by calling his dick a banana in Yoruba. His voice had barely dropped when the original version of “Calm Down” was released about three years later.

“Le Monde est à Vous,” translated to The World Is Yours, is the moniker for Pharrell Williams’ third collection with Louis Vuitton in his role helming the French luxury brand’s men’s division. With more than 75 looks, Louis Vuitton’s Spring-Summer 2025 line accentuated a broad range of colorful gradient pieces that pulled inspiration from the creative director’s musical heritage. Williams has been outspoken about his lifelong experience as an artist who has sound-color synesthesia — an innate way of perceiving music as color — to illustrate a deeper visual story. This season’s Louis Vuitton collection upholds his aptitude for blending song and color to create a beautiful portrait of Black American fashion.
The June 18 show kicked off with a grand live orchestra, whose members all donned silk-lined pixelated-checkered Louis Vuitton garb as they carried their instruments to the base of the runway in Paris at the city’s Unesco center.

This story is part of Como Celebramos, in which we're sharing how we're honoring our favorite summertime Sunday rituals.
Rauw Alejandro and Peso Pluma are set to take the stage at the 2024 Governor's Ball in NYC between June 7 and 9. While Becky G and J Balvin performed at the music festival in 2022 and 2021, respectively, this year marks the first time that two Latin music acts are headlining on separate days. And it's about time.
Since the 1940s and '50s, when cha cha and mambo took the US by storm, the mass appeal of Latin music has been undeniable. With its mix of West African and Spanish rhythms, the music is inherently danceable, which no doubt has helped genres like salsa and reggaetón break down the language barrier. You don't need to know what Bad Bunny's saying to be able to move to the beat. And yet, for a long time,...

Streaming activity for Sean “Diddy” Combs has severely dipped since he has been accused of assault and harassment.
When comparing Combs’ U.S. catalog streams during the first week of December — two weeks after Cassie Ventura sued him — with streams of his catalog during the week ending May 16, there was a 51.8 percent decrease for songs under his stage name Diddy from 2,624,000 streams to 1,265,000 streams, according to Luminate, which tracks music streams and sales.
As Puff Daddy during the same period, he saw a similar drop: there was a 48.3 percent decrease from 1,359,000 streams to 703,000 streams. Under his stage name Diddy, the change was very small: a 2.1 decrease from 604,000 streams to 591,200 streams.
The streaming decline comes after Combs apologized on Sunday for a recently surfaced 2016 video which sees him attacking Ventura, his ex-girlfriend and former protege who was signed to his Bad Boy record label. In the video, first obtained by CNN,...

The Drake-Kendrick Lamar showdown will continue — at the 2024 BET Awards.
The rappers will compete in two categories at the June 30 show: best male hip-hop artist and best collaboration. In the latter category, Drake is nominated for “Rich Baby Daddy” with Sza and Sexyy Red, while Lamar is nominated for his guest verse on the remix of Beyoncé’s “America Has a Problem.”
Drake is the show’s top contender with seven nominations, thanks to his album For All the Dogs (Scary Hours Edition). Lamar didn’t release an album that was eligible this year. The Canadian rapper’s other nominations include album of the year, best male R&b/pop artist and viewer’s choice for “Rich Baby Daddy.” He’s nominated twice in the video of the year category: “Rich Baby Daddy” and his guest verse on J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter,” the late 2023 track that reignited his feud with Lamar.

Tiwa Savage has long held a unique position in African music as the leading female artist in the Afrobeats genius. After headlining global tours, collaborating with Beyoncé and Brandy and championing newcomers, Savage Tiwa is embarking on her next venture: starring in and executive producing her debut full-length feature film, “Water and Garri.”
The film, slated for global debut on Prime Video on May 10, follows Aisha, a successful fashion designer, as she returns to Nigeria after a decade in the United States. She’s taken aback by the profound changes that have swept through her homeland and the people she once knew. Set to the evocative soundtrack of the same name, Aisha’s journey unfolds to reveal poignant cultural shifts. The accompanying soundtrack is a key component of the experience, as the film’s tracklisting mirrors Aisha’s interactions and feelings throughout.

Preceded by a crew of gymnasts who shot fire — and themselves — high in the air, Black Sherif earned a hero’s welcome when he took the stage at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra, Ghana, to headline the AfroFuture festival last December. The event, which has become one of the hallmarks of winter celebrations in West Africa, attracted roughly 40,000 attendees across its two days, according to its founder. Black Sherif was the sole Ghanaian artist to headline, and he stands as one his country’s brightest stars thanks to his eclectic remaking of U.

Usher has returned to one of the biggest stages in music for a headlining performance at the 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show, which included guest appearances by Lil Jon, Ludacris, Alicia Keys, and more.
Marking the second time Usher has performed at the Halftime Show (thanks to his guest spot during The Black Eyed Peas’ performance in 2011), the pop star took charge at Super Bowl Lviii, taking the stage for a display of gyrating, roller skating, and pop nostalgia. Running through some of his biggest hits — like “My Boo,” “Omg,” “Yeah!” and more — Usher’s showmanship and the energy of his guests carried the performance, almost making up for the fact that the television mix was sub-par.
In addition to Lil Jon, Ludacris, and Keys, Usher was joined by the likes of H.E.R. — who provided a Prince-esque guitar solo — Jermaine Dupri, will.i.am, and more. Watch clips of the performance below.

Remember when the Grammys used to suck every year? These days, nobody does. The Grammy ceremony has been on a historic roll ever since 2021, when they finally figured out how to stop doing a normal award show, and turn it into (as host Trevor Noah said) “a concert where we give out awards.” Grammy Night now has blown up into a ritual that really feels like a full-blast fan celebration. Last night’s excellent Grammy bash had no stupid comedy skits, no cringey presenter chit-chat — just memorable music moments, along with some dog-vomit ones.

Billy Joel took the stage to perform at the Grammy Awards for the first time in more than two decades on Sunday night.
Living up to his Piano Man nickname, he sat behind a piano to perform “Turn the Lights Back On,” his new single — and his first in decades — which was released Feb. 1. He was backed by a string orchestra as he sang the song at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
The singer closed out the show with his classic hit “You May Be Right,” following Celine Dion’s presentation of the album of year award to Taylor Swift. The lively performance featured him again behind a piano.
Joel, 74, last performed at the Grammys in 2002, when he and Tony Bennett duetted on “New York State of Mind.”
Over the course of his career, Joel has earned a total of 23 Grammy nominations, winning five, including album of the...

Miley Cyrus took home one of the night’s top prizes, record of the year, at the 2024 Grammys for “Flowers,” presented by Meryl Streep and her son-in-law, Mark Ronson.
Streep kicked off the presentation by saying they would be presenting the best album of the year, because a record is an album. Then Ronson explained that is not what the award is. It actually recognizes everything that goes into making a song, including artists, producers, recording engineers, mixers and mastering engineers.
“Flowers” producers Kid Harpoon and Tyler Johnson; engineers/mixers Michael Pollack, Brian Rajaratnam and Mark “Spike” Stent; and mastering engineer Joe Laporta were also recognized for the award.
“Thank you all so much,” Cyrus began her acceptance speech. “This award is amazing, but I really hope that it doesn’t change anything because my life was beautiful yesterday. Not everyone in the world will get a Grammy, but everyone in this world is spectacular.
