Open Mike Eagle has teamed up with Video Dave and Still Rift to launch their new rap supergroup, Previous Industries. They’re making their two-single debut on Merge Records with “Showbiz” and “Braids.”
Both singles – produced by Child Actor and Quelle Chris, respectively – bring together the long-standing friends and frequent collaborators on a warm, comfortable sound. Although new to the game as a trio, both tracks invite the listener to experience what they’ve been about all along. In “Showbiz,” they declare: “Gather round/ We’re the new fools in town/ And our sounds lay down by the underground.” Pre-orders can be made here.
“Video Dave first met Mike on the campus grounds of Southern Illinois University where an innate creative bond was formed on campus while honing their skills alongside other notable figures Hannibal Buress and Serengeti,” reads a press release on how the group came to be. “Enter Still Rift,...

Jenny Lewis and Serengeti have released another new song, “Gltr,” from their ongoing quarantine collaboration series.
“Gltr” is centered around a thick bass line and gets built out with dreamy synths and increasingly dance-y drums. In a sing-song verse, Serengeti muses about social media engagement — “How’s your Instagram these days?/Did you get a lot of action when you had braids?/Looked good on that beach that time by the maze” — while Lewis croons on the hook, “If I die, oh lord/If I die, leave some glitter on my eye.

Jenny Lewis and Chicago rapper Serengeti have shared their surprise new song “Unblu,” the first track in a series of collaborations between the two artists.
“Music to dance around your living room in a Day-Glo bathing suit to,” the pair said of the track in a statement. “Music to go bananas to while watching the news and Forensic Files on mute.”
“Unblu,” co-produced by Lewis and Andrew Broder, features Serengeti’s near-spoken verses around Lewis’ piano-and-beats soundscape, with the singer also delivering the track’s hook, giving the track a...

Growing up, I didn't watch the Emmys every year. Apart from a few big names, not many of my favorite actresses (and none of my favorite shows) ever made the cut. It was rare that I saw women who looked like me being praised for their work at the Emmys, and when the rare occurrence came along, it was always just one, maybe two, Black women that were acknowledged. Case in point: Tracee Ellis Ross didn't get her first Emmy nomination until 2016 for Blackish. I mean - did Emmy voters not watch Girlfriends? As a young Black girl who praised actresses like Ross, Brandy, and Angela Bassett, it was frustrating to see these talented women ignored year after year.
But this year, something big happened.
This year's Emmy nominations are oozing with Black Girl Magic. 2020 has

When Lupita Nyong’o was asked to narrate the Discovery nature documentary series “Serengeti,” the Oscar-winning actor jumped at the opportunity — not just because the subject celebrated to her heritage as an African woman, but because it was an offer she never expected.
“I hadn’t really heard of a nature documentary narrated by a woman. And I certainly had never heard of a nature documentary narrated by an African woman,” Nyong’o tells Variety. “I was really excited to try my hand at it. And who doesn’t want to play the voice of God. And that’s what it kind of feels like when you watch those documentaries — there’s so much authority in the voice and they’re interpreting nature and bringing nature to your living room.”

Lupita Nyong’o admits, “It is hard to see nature at work” in the Discovery documentary series “Serengeti,” which she narrated. “It’s hard to be watching something and not be asked to take sides … In this, there’s no good guys or bad guys. There’s just guys trying to survive.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Nyong’o above.

“Serengeti” follows a variety of animals, from predators like lions and hyenas to potential prey like baboons and ostriches. And the series frames their stories in terms the human audience can relate to, as stories of unrequited love, sibling rivalry, parenthood, power struggles, sudden loss and more. The documentary-maker is locked down with a seven-year-old which means that family films edge out Citizen Kane
Read all the other Lockdown watch choicesThe best arts and entertainment during self-isolation
I wish I could send over a list of all the great films I am catching up with during the lockdown: Citizen Kane, Nanook of the North, Battleship Potemkin … However my reality is very different. I am locked down with Charlie, my seven-year-old son, so my viewing consists of The Secret Life of Pets 2, which I’ve watched at least 10 times (and highly recommend); The Lion King, brilliant; Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, wonderful; How to Train Your Dragon, Charlie loves it, me less so; Spider-Man, way above my head; The Grinch, brilliant. Occasionally I try to sneak in Planet Earth; Serengeti, though, was a complete bust.

Producer Jonny Keeling discusses the North American launch of BBC America's sprawling documentary Seven Worlds, One Planet.
Seven Worlds, One Planet producer Jonny Keeling has been involved with nature documentaries since 2002’s The Life of Mammals and has been working with animals for even longer.
Several decades in, however, some creatures still have the capacity to surprise him...creatures like the voice of Seven Worlds, Sir David Attenborough. The 93-year-old Attenborough is a natural historian, frequent nature documentary narrator, and one of mankind’s most precious resources. If you were captivated by the recent hyper-visual CG-laden The Lion King, then the Discovery Channel’s upcoming Serengeti will make your jaw hit the floor — because it is real life. With the series premiering August 4, it’s close to the release of the new iteration of the Disney film and creator and producer Simon Fuller and director and producer John Downer admitted that it was just a coincidence.
“We certainly weren’t planning it,” said Downer of the release dates of Serengeti and The Lion King. He said he hasn’t seen the movie yet, but he said he did see the trailer and realized that it looked like their series.
“There is a convergence there,” added Downer. “The Lion King is going for photo-realism. We’re going for realism…we are trying to do something different.”

Discovery Channel is unveiling three new series and a documentary that looks at subjects ranging from the work of conservationists to protect species on the brink of extinction to the way that the forces of nature impact life on Earth.

The programs will air in 2019 and 2020. The shows promise to highlight both exotic wildlife as well as exotic locations, from lush forests to arid deserts. One of the shows, “Wildlife Warriors,” will be executive produced by comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.
“More than 27,000 species are threatened with extinction. Some are well-known animals, some aren’t, but all are important to our ecosystem. It is an...

American Idol creator Simon Fuller’s next thing?
Wildlife.
In the increasingly dog-eat-dog world of animals-in-the-wild docu-series, Discovery Channel will premiere a six-part series, Serengeti from Fuller and wildlife filmmaker John Downer.
The series, which will premiere in ’19, follows a cast of African wildlife over the course of a year, showcasing the dramatic moments that make each day of survival a feat, in a pristine corner of the African plains.
Fuller and Downer worked on Serengeti for several years; their team employed innovative filming techniques and set the footage to the backdrop of original music. Among the highlights of daily challenges of life on the Serengeti: a lioness trying to provide for her cubs after being exiled from her pride.
Nancy Daniels, Chief Brand Officer, Discovery & Factual, made the announcement Tuesday morning at TCA, saying the project brings Discovery “back to its roots of presenting one-of-a-kind television events showcasing the beautiful world we live in.
