Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th (you can watch the teaser Here), and we have previously seen a picture of a Xenomorph from the film – in fact, that’s the image featured above this paragraph. Now USA Today has shared another image of an Alien: Romulus Xenomorph, and you can check that one out at the bottom of this article. It has been said that Álvarez was dedicated to using practical effects on this film (we’ve even seen him playing with a remote controlled Facehugger), so it’s nice to see glimpses of these creatures that actually existed on the set.
When this project was announced near the start of 2022, it was said that Álvarez pitched the idea to Ridley Scott years ago and it stuck with Scott. So in late 2021, he called Álvarez and asked...

The superhero genre has traditionally been family-oriented. Often light-hearted and ending with a moral message, PG-13 is what most of these films aim for. However, every now and then there comes an R-rated superhero flick that completely blows off adult minds, forcing them to be hyped like kids again. And the Deadpool series did just that.
A still from Logan
However, Deadpool wasn’t the first R-rated superhero movie, and it certainly won’t be the last. Most of the time, R-rated movies earn much less than their PG counterparts, and just like Deadpool, that rule is occasionally broken. As in the case of Logan, which successfully clawed through its family-friendly genre to present a bloody masterpiece.

Two years ago, it was neon yellow roller blades and coordinating skating costumes for Barbie and Ken that showed up on Venice Beach in Los Angeles, drumming up excitement for what became a blockbuster hit. This year, it’s apes on horseback.
20th Century Film sent horse handlers dressed as monkeys to the iconic California coast in an out-of-the-box marketing effort for their upcoming movie, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
On Monday, the studio’s president, Steve Asbell, reshared a video of the event on X, formerly Twitter, writing, “We out here opening up an entirely new front on the CGI vs. practical effects twitter debate!”

Last month, 20th Century Studios unveiled a teaser trailer for Alien: Romulus, director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise that is set to reach theatres on August 16th. (You can watch the teaser Here.) With the release date still four months away, it might be a little while before we see a full trailer – but while we wait for that to come along, star Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) is building the hype by promising that the film will deliver everything fans want to see.
Spaeny told CinePOP, “I don’t think I can say much, but I already delivered something, so I’ll just repeat it. It takes place between Alien and Aliens, in terms of plot and chronology. An exclusive extended scene from Alien: Romulus was screened a CinemaCon which followed Cailee Spaeny’s character wandering through a broken-down spaceship corridor with Aileen Wu’s character. They see a ripped-apart android among the debris. David Jonsson’s character, who is an android himself, is rebooting with an interesting effect in his eyes, but at that moment, a swarm of face-huggers burst into the room, chasing the characters out. Exclusive: In a move that points to a change in direction he will take at the helm of Disney live action and 20th Century Studios, former Searchlight co-head David Greenbaum has made his first big statement buy, and it’s set to the music of Bruce Springsteen’s seminal album Nebraska.
20th Century has closed a deal to finance and release Deliver Me from Nowhere, the narrative film that Scott Cooper is writing to direct with Emmy-winning The Bear star Jeremy Allen White playing The Boss in a pivotal moment in his life. Grappling with personal demons and trying to wrap his arms around becoming a global superstar, Springsteen wrote and recorded Nebraska, the 1982 album that rivals Joni Mitchell’s Blue as one of the most emotionally raw, dark and honest albums in recent music history.
When Deadline revealed that the project was coming together, A24 was expected to be the distributor.

This article contains minor spoilers for "The First Omen."
When The Walt Disney Company first acquired 20th Century Studios, fans had a field day joking about the characters in their library that were now under the Disney banner. Ripley from "Alien," Tyler Durden from "Fight Club," the titular "Predator," and all of the "Planet of the Apes" characters were now residents at the House of Mouse. Suddenly, viral memes declaring Dr. Frank-n-Furter from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" as a technical Disney Princess were inescapable. Ignoring the blatant inaccuracy of that statement, it does serve as a reminder that Disney is and will likely forever be synonymous with family-friendly fare.
When Steve Asbell took over as president of 20th Century Studios, he spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and assured everyone that despite being a part of Disney, this branch would be closer to "general entertainment," saying, "Some films will be more Disney-adjacent — 'Avatar,...

It’s finally here! After being teased for months, our first peek at Fede Alvarez’s all-new addition to the xenomorph universe, Alien: Romulus, is here! While the 60 second teaser trailer embedded above doesn’t give us too much of an idea what the film will be like, the blood-covered pod and glimpses of our heroine clutching a pulse rifle make this look like a hard-r rated throwback to both Alien and Aliens.
Here’s the studio’s official logline:
The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.

It isn’t every week that two of the biggest jobs in film are filled within a matter of days, but that was the case last week. On February 26, Disney’s live-action president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production Sean Bailey exited, making way for Searchlight’s David Greenbaum to take the top job. Two days later on Feb. 28, Rideback’s Dan Lin was tapped to take Scott Stuber’s open seat atop Netflix’s film division.
Greenbaum made his bones on prestige indie films and original, auteur-driven stories. He’s now taking the job at a company that has spent the last 15 years mining IP and playing the hits. Lin is a franchise builder now stepping into an environment known for chasing big prestige swings.

Merced is doing the press rounds to promote Madame Web, and during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter she teased that Alien: Romulus features a scene that’s so disgusting, a lot of viewers will have to look away from the screen. After handling visual effects for such blockbusters as Watchmen, Avatar and Terminator: Salvation, Dan Blank is aiming to showcase his directing chops in Invisible, a sci-fi feature that he just successfully pitched to Fox.
The story is still under wraps, but Invisible has been described as “following in the vein of superhero sci-fi thriller Chronicle.” Given that Chronicle was an exciting breath of fresh air for both the superhero and found-footage genres, it’s not hard to start getting excited for Invisible.
One aspect of this project that’s especially promising is the fact that Doug Simon, the writer behind SXSW Audience Award winner Brotherhood and a 2013 Black List script called Burn Site, is attached to pen the screenplay, from Blank’s idea.
If Blank is signed to direct, as seems likely, it won’t be his first time getting behind the camera for an idea he created. In 2012, he directed Monster Roll,...

The Kick-Ass 2 filmmaker, who may also direct the project, explained that Fox was considering taking the franchise in another direction before he insisted the team-based dynamic should continue," Wadlow told Collider.
"They were talking about all these different ideas for franchises they could build and characters, and I said, 'X-Force. Gotta do an X-Force movie'. And they originally said, 'Maybe that's a second step'. And I said, 'No, it's about teams'.
"That's what, to me, the X universe is about. It's not about doing movies with individual characters and then bringing them together in a team; that's what Marvel already did with The Avengers.
"I think the next step is to have these teams and see how they bounce off of each other, that's where you can have crossover potential."

There's an old saying - If I knew then, what I know now... Ever wonder what would happen if you could warn yourself not to do things before you do them? Would you even listen to future you? That's the question posed by the new project from 20th Century Fox called Capsule.
According to THR, 20th Century Fox has picked up Capsule, a sci-fi spec by Ian Shorr (Splinter) that has Matthias Hoene (Cockneys vs Zombies) attached to direct. Hutch Parker and John Zaozirny are attached to produce with Parker producing through his Hutch Parker Entertainment banner.
Based on an original story by Hoene, Capsule centers on a young man whose life is turned upside down when he mysteriously begins to receive metallic capsules containing messages from his future self.
Steve Asbell will oversee the project for the studio. Aaron Ensweiler will shepherd the project for Hutch Parker Entertainment.

Back in May, 20th Century Fox was the frontrunner to acquire ‘Wool’, Hugh Howey’s self-published e-book, a series of five sci-fi novelettes that are woven together. Six months later, Fox is negotiating with writer-director J. Blakeson, who made the criminally underseen 2009 U.K. thriller The Disappearance of Alice Creed, to direct.
The independently published hit book ‘Wool’ has become an internet sensation and is being called the sci-fi version of Fifty Shades of Grey. This Omnibus Edition has been picked up by Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian for a film adaptation, and Fox’s Steve Asbell will oversee it.

Breaking: I’m hearing that 20th Century Fox is the frontrunner to acquire Wool, a self-published e-book that has become an internet sensation and is being called the sci-fi version of Fifty Shades of Grey. Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free are partnering on the deal with Film Rites’ Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch. Producer credits are still being worked out, but they will include Scott Free’s Elisha Holmes and Michael Costigan. Fox’s Steve Asbell will oversee it. There has been something of a stampede of bidders, including Lionsgate, for a book was written by Hugh Howey. Wool is about a dystopian future where the last inhabitants on earth band together in safe bunkers called silos. No one is allowed outside until a secret is discovered that could change the course of humanity, as well as reveal its devastating past. Bidders sparked to the book and the...

If Joshua Trank had his way, audiences on February 3 would go into theaters to see Chronicle knowing absolutely nothing about it. Needless to say, that won't happen, as the publicity machine must fire up and generate a modicum of awareness for the film.
This week, Shock was called to 20th Century Fox and treated to a series of clips from the upcoming film, hosted by Trank and Fox creative exec Steve Asbell.
Chronicle tells of three high school students (actors Alex Russell, Dane DeHaan and Michael B. Jordan) who, one evening, discover a hole in the earth. Exposure to whatever it is that made said hole (those details are not being given yet) grants them extraordinary telekinetic powers that get stronger as they use them. As the story goes on, the misfit of the group, Andrew (DeHaan), apparently taps into his dark side and things take a sour turn.

It's all fun and games until everybody gets hurt. Yesterday afternoon I was invited down to the Fox lot in Century City to see roughly 20 minutes of never-before-seen footage revealed from an upcoming film called Chronicle. Directed and conceived by Josh Trank, co-written with Max Landis, it's a new "found-footage" film about high school kids who get telekinetic superpowers - we featured a kick ass trailer for it last year. While the footage didn't reveal anything major plot-wise, we did get a glimpse at a few of the more intense moments and it looks amazing, I cannot wait to see it, one of my most anticipated pre-summer 2012 movies. Following the footage screening and event, which included a Q&A with young up-and-coming director Josh Trank (he's on Twitter as @joshtrank) and Fox production exec Steve Asbell, I recorded a video blog with my friend Peter from SlashFilm. We were shown...

20th Century Fox is suddenly teeming with production veeps. I am hearing that Lauren Levy is about to become the 6th. She will soon leave Offspring Entertainment, the shingle run by Oscar producer Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot. Levy is the second recent VP hire by newly appointed sole production president Emma Watts, who brought Steven Puri over from Kurtzman/Orci. They join John Fox, Peter Kang, Steve Asbell, and Drew Crevello in veep slots. Levy previously worked at Miramax under ex-president Keri Putnam on films that included Adventureland, Last Night and The Baster.
