Do you know what it takes for the best in the business to become the best in the first place? Well, there are the usual must-haves like talent and opportunity and access ... but it also helps to have friends in high places to help you out of a jam or two. When Steven Spielberg and George Lucas first embarked on their legendary filmmaking journeys and began to make a name for themselves during the 1970s and '80s, few at the time could've ever imagined the impact each director would end up having on the other. The two most famously paired up to deliver the "Indiana Jones" movies, forever changing the action/adventure genre only a few scant years after Lucas had done the same to space operas with "Star Wars." But if you thought their collaborations began and ended there, you'd be sorely mistaken.

Even before we got to see the film, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker already caused a lot of controversy and discussion amongst fans due to the decision to resurrect Emperor Palpatine, something that was clear from the first trailer. Bringing the villain back for the final chapter in the Skywalker saga is either a brilliant way to link Episode IX in with the previous trilogies or a shameless attempt to shoe-horn in some fan service, depending on your view.
Whatever your opinion, it does seem to be the case that Palpatine’s return came from studio bosses rather than the filmmakers themselves. While speaking with Awards Daily, co-writer Chris Terrio alluded to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and producer Michelle Rejwan having a “clear plan” that involved Darth Sidious returning from the dead. From a story point of view, the necessity of Palpatine’s inclusion came about due to Kylo Ren’s arc.

What would you think if David Fincher, and not J.J. Abrams, had been chosen as the director of Star Wars: Episode VIIc It's only a hypothetical looking back, but as Fincher tells Total Film, leading the new Star Wars trilogy wasn't entirely off the table. "I talked to Kathy Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm about it, but I think that it's a different thing from... I don't know what Disney-Lucasfilm will be like," Fincher told the site. His apprehension makes sense, seeing as his long-in-development 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was pretty much shot down by Disney, which owns Lucasfilm. Earlier this month, Fincher observed in an interview with Little White Lies that, "You get over $200 million... all motion picture companies have corporate culture and corporate anxieties." Relating specifically to his shuttered maritime fantasy adventure, it sounds like it was very difficult for Fincher to appease the anxieties of Disney's corporate culture.

David Fincher was approached about directing Star Wars Episode VII.
The Gone Girl director spoke to producer Kathy Kennedy about Disney's revival of the franchise.
"I talked to Kathy about it, but I think that it's a different thing from... I don't know what Disney-Lucasfilm will be like," he told Total Film.
"It's tricky," he continued. "My favourite is The Empire Strikes Back. If I said, 'I want to do something more like that', then I'm sure the people paying for it would be like, 'No! You can't do that! We want it like the other one with all the creatures!'
"I always thought of Star Wars as the story of two slaves [C-3Po and R2-D2] who go from owner to owner, witnessing their masters' folly, the ultimate folly of man.
"I thought it was an interesting idea in the first two, but it's kind of gone by Return of the Jedi.

(Cbr) We tend not to think of major filming-location news coming from the Twitter accounts of British government officials, but even Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne is getting in on the action these days. On Tuesday he sent out the following message: “On set of Episode VII tonight, can announce another #StarWars film will be made in UK. A #LongTermEconomicPlan in a galaxy far far away” In this case, the newly announced film is the first "Star Wars" spinoff, directed by Gareth Edwards ("Godzilla") and written by Gary Whitta ("The Book of Eli," "After Earth). It’s slated for a Dec. 16, 2016 release. “Lucasfilm and Disney’s decision to shoot the Star Wars standalone movie in the U.K. is testament to the incredible talent in Britain,” Osborne said in a statement. “This will mean more jobs and more investment. It is great news for people working at Pinewood Studios,...

There's a new photo from the set of "Star Wars: Episode VII" -- and it's not even a leaked one!
Don't get too excited just yet. The photo doesn't show much of anything, aside from the U.K.'s Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, posing with director J.J. Abrams, producer Kathleen Kennedy, and R2-D2. The pic does give a tantalizing glimpse at an unfinished Millennium Falcon in the background, though.

George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer & MP for Tatton in the U.K., took to Twitter to post a couple of shots from his visit to the Star Wars: Episode VII set. In doing so, he also revealed that there'd be another U.K.-based Star Wars production coming up. This shouldn't be a surprise, as a huge portion of the franchise's previous entries have filmed there. But this proves that this tradition will not be ending any time soon.

Most of the Star Wars news in the past few weeks has revolved around J.J. Abrams’ wildly anticipated series update Star Wars: Episode VII, which will lead into two additional films, but Disney and Lucasfilm have more plans for the franchise than just that new, main trilogy. At least three standalone movies set within the Star Wars universe are in the works, including one directed by Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards. Now, we’ve learned that Disney has opted to shoot that standalone in the U.K., where Episode VII is currently shooting.
Like Abrams’ film, Edwards’ standalone will be filmed at the Pinewood Studios west of London next year. Chancellor George Osborne was the one to confirm the news, tweeting:

J.J. Abrams wasn’t particularly happy about having to leave Los Angeles to shoot Star Wars Episode VII in the UK as it meant leaving his family behind, and he even went to the expense of converting some of his Bad Robot production offices so that later work on the movie could be done there.

Kinberg was asked by IGN if either the new trilogy or the spinoff movies would use material from the "Expanded Universe" (namely the non-canon, post-Jedi set novels, games, etc.). Kinberg says that material has inspired them, but hasn't necessarily impacted the film's making:
"For me – and I know this was true for J.J. [Abrams] and Larry Kasdan, obviously, and Kathy Kennedy, and Michael Arndt, it was all about honoring the original movies and yet wanting to take a step forward, too, and tell a new story.
[The Expanded Universe] is not off limits. It's certainly inspiring, and I'm working on a new animated show for them as well – Star Wars: Rebels - that will take inspiration from everywhere.

Contrary to some wildly speculative rumors floating around the galaxy, J.J. Abrams is not stepping down from his job helming the new "Star Wars" movie.
The rumors that Abrams would be leaving the project -- due to a reported disagreement with producers over shooting "Episode VII" in England, and away from his family -- became so persistent in recent days that Lucasfilm was forced to make a statement on the matter, which the studio issued Monday.
"There is no truth to the rumor," the statement said. "J.J. is having a great time working on the script and is looking forward to going into production next year."

Star Wars Rebels, a one-hour animated pilot already in production at Lucasfilm, is scheduled to premiere in Fall 2014 on the Disney Channel before the new brand leaps to Disney Xd for the ongoing series, according to Lucasfilm sources.
The series will mine material from the 19 years that follow Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and precede the Episode IV: A New Hope. In other words, using the life of the Skywalker twins as a measure, the series will be active in the story years that come after their separation as newborns and before their (unwitting) reunion on the prison level of the Death Star.

Anthony Daniels has strongly hinted that C-3Po will feature in Jj Abrams's Star Wars: Episode VII.
The British actor, who has portrayed the gold-plated protocol droid since 1977's Star Wars, will also be among the franchise legends appearing at the Star Wars Celebration in Germany this July.
Asked about the prospect of an Episode VII return for C-3Po, Daniels told Digital Spy: "Look, it's all very early days and I don't want to wear anybody out by speculating or letting you waste your energy by saying 'What do you think?'
"I'm certainly not sitting by the phone, but it's always nice when it rings. Do you know what I mean?"
Daniels described the prospect of more Star Wars movies under the stewardship of Disney as "wonderful", saying: "It never occurred to me that it would happen. Everybody's really happy that Disney have taken over the mantle.

The first of what I expect will be many quotes to come from J.J. Abrams regarding his upcoming directorial outing, Star Wars: Episode VII, has been unleashed to the Internet hordes via Empire who asked the Star Trek Into Darkness director about his plans for the latest film in the franchise and while I hope you don't expect too much info (even if he had it), he did talk a bit about the process. He addresses the fact they are just getting started as well as his initial impulse to turn the job down only to later circle back and get on board. Check out his comments below. It’s official! After months of speculation, Thursday night brought with it the unconfirmed report that J.J. Abrams is set to take the helm for Star Wars Episode VII. And now that news has officially been confirmed, complete with press release courtesy of the franchise’s website.
The rumour mill began late last year, following the entirely unexpected announcement that Disney would be buying Lucasfilm for a tidy sum of $4.05bn.
Since then, we’ve heard that they’ll be putting a new trilogy into production, beginning with Star Wars Episode VII in 2015. And not only that, but they’re reportedly also exploring possible spin-off films to go alongside the new trilogy, with an aim to have one film in the Star Wars universe in theatres every other year.

We reported it a few days ago as rumor because we hadn't received any official word yet, but Disney has now issued a press release confirming that J.J. Abrams is in fact directing Star Wars Episode VII, including quotes from George Lucas and Abrams himself on the decision.
We can't say we're exactly surprised. **Update: Confirmed by Disney with official press release** After months of speculation, it has finally been revealed that J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII for Lucasfilm/Disney. The news was first reported by The Wrap, who also noted that Ben Affleck was one of the other directors up for the job. Other directors previously rumored to be under consideration included Jon Favreau and Joe Johnston.
J.J. Abrams is currently busy with post-production on Star Trek Into Darkness and it looks like he’ll have no break time, as Disney wants Episode VII in theaters some time in 2015. It was previously announced that Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) is working on the screenplay, and it will be based on drafts created by George Lucas. Episode VII is the first film in a new trilogy, and we don’t know whether Abrams will sign on for all three or simply direct the first film.

Updated: The official press release just dropped tonight and is included below.
So yeah, the news that broke the internet today and even stole my earlier scoop’s thunder.
Lucas Shaw at TheWrap has exclusively reported that Jj Abrams got the Star Wars gig.
He is directing Episode VII.
Ugh.
Whatever.
I really thought Jon Favreau was going to get the gig.
The Wrap story further says that:
Lucasfilm Chief Kathleen Kennedy has been courting Abrams, one of the most successful directors and producers in Hollywood — and a man beloved by fanboys. He runs one of the industry’s top production companies, Bad Robot, and created or co-created television franchises like “Lost,” “Fringe” and “Alias.” He has also directed film spectacles “Mission: Impossible III,” “Star Trek” and “Super 8.”
The lure of the Jedi was too strong, and it will no doubt complicate his relationship with Paramount, where Bad Robot is a top supplier.

According to reports being published by The Wrap and Deadline, it appears that J.J. Abrams may be tapped to direct one of the most highly anticipated films on the map, Star Wars: Episode VII. According to the source, “It’s done deal with J.J.”
While nothing is ever official until it’s announced by the studio, the news still sounds promising for fans of the franchise. After all, it was Abrams’ who successfully re-launched the Star Trek film franchise and after Disney purchased Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion back in October, he immediately found himself on the top of a very short list of considered directors for the new film. In fact, Abrams’ even went on record last month stating that he was approached by Lucasfilm before to direct the movie but decided to pass out of loyalty to the Star Trek franchise.
