Performance artists. What good are they anyhow? It’s not like they put their lives on the line, or make a strong statement about anything going on in current events. It’s not like they tend to become wildly notorious for their acts, nor do they leave a mark on younger generations. But the question is, what happens to their kids? That’s what The Family Fang sets out to solve…
The second directorial feature from Jason Bateman after 2013′s Bad Words, The Family Fang sees Bateman star as Baxter Fang, the brother of Annie Fang, played by Nicole Kidman. They are affectionately called “Child A” and “Child B” by their parents Caleb and Camille, played by the one and only Christopher Walken and Maryann Plunkett.

Nicole Kidman and Jason Bateman are Annie and Baxter Fang, children of celebrated performance artists Caleb and Camille Fang (Christopher Walken, Maryann Plunkett). When the elder Fangs go missing under mysterious circumstances, the siblings are forced to unpack long-dormant and unresolved issues from their unorthodox childhoods as they search for their parents. Caustically funny and deeply felt, Bateman’s critically acclaimed sophomore feature directorial effort is based on Kevin Wilson’s bestselling novel. The film stars Nicole Kidman, Jason Bateman, Christopher Walken, Maryann Plunkett, Jason Butler Harner, and Kathryn Hahn. Directed by Jason Bateman. Strikingly original, a truly rare pleasure in a cinematic environment clogged with cookie-cutter films. Jason Bateman and Nicole Kidman are splendid. I’m “biast” (pro): big Jason Bateman fan
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Jason Bateman’s second film as director opens with a sequence that is one of the most provocative introductions to a movie I’ve ever seen. I am not going to tell you what it entails, not even in the barest outlines, because watching it unfold and feeling wonderfully bewildered at where it goes is a truly rare pleasure in a cinematic environment clogged with cookie-cutter films. And once it’s over, you’re left with an even more delicious sense of having absolutely no idea what sort of story this is setting up.
I’m so glad...

A few years back, Jason Bateman made his directorial debut with the amusing yet filthy comedy Bad Words. This year, he has a sophomore feature that just hit screens in The Family Fang. I saw this movie a couple of weeks ago at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival and found it to be only decent, but regardless of my thoughts, it shows off an interesting direction for Bateman as a filmmaker. He seems to be moving towards prestige fare, which is not exactly where you’d initially peg his projects to go. For that, I can’t help but show admiration for his choices so far. The movie is an adaptation of Kevin Wilson’s novel. The plot centers on the adult lives of the children of noted performance art mavericks Caleb Fang (Christopher Walken) and Camille Fang (Maryann Plunkett). As kids, Baxter Fang (Bateman) and Annie Fang (Nicole Kidman) enjoyed...

Jason Bateman is getting better and better at directing. Working with an adaption of Kevin Wilson's novel, by screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire ("Rabbit Hole”), this is his second movie behind the camera. He rounds up a great ensemble of actors (himself included) to deliver a funny, sensitive, and layered piece of work. It's an original story about the thin, squiggly line between art and life, comfortably swaying between comedy and drama. To call "The Family Fang" an improvement on Bateman’s debut "Bad Words", would be an understatement. A dysfunctional structure and some bizarre plotting stop the film from reaching greatness, but never from being endearingly satisfying. Actor Jason Bateman made his feature directorial debut with the 2013 comedy, Bad Words. Bateman’s sophomore effort, The Family Fang, is a slightly less aggressive film. Bateman’s adaptation of Kevin Wilson‘s novel, written by David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole), simply called for a more reserved approach than his first film –although The Family Fang isn’t without its comedic moments, like when Bateman’s character gets beamed […]

After more than 30 years on screen — from his baby-faced days on Little House on the Prairie to his work on Arrested Development — Jason Bateman directed his first feature in 2013 with Bad Words. He now returns behind the camera with The Family Fang, an adaptation of the 2011 bestselling novel by Kevin Wilson. The Family Fang charts the 40-year saga of a family led by a pair of eccentric performance artists: Caleb (Christopher Walken) and Camille (Maryann Plunkett) Fang. In the ’70s, the Fang parents enlisted their children Baxter (Bateman) and Annie (Nicole Kidman) to act in their abrasive art projects. […]...

Just what do you do when your parents are performance artists and go missing? Are they crying wolf and trying to pull another stunt? Or rather, are they actually in trouble and need your help?
This is the dilemma Annie and Baxter Fang find themselves in, in The Family Fang. At first glance, The Family Fang may seem as though actor-director Jason Bateman has made a feature length film of the recurring Arrested Development joke – in which a one-armed friend of his Dad’s continually traumatises the Bluth children with elaborate practical jokes, designed to teach important life lessons. However, the movie most definitely not that – as we can now see from the first trailer. What it is, is a moving comedy-drama about child-parental relationships, personal development, and the nature of art.
Based on the novel by Kevin Wilson, and adapted for the screen by David Lindsay-Abaire (Rabbit Hole), The Family Fang stars Bateman (who also directs) and Nicole Kidman as siblings, whose parents – played by Christopher Walken and Maryann Plunkett – are performance artists. Jason Bateman cut his teeth on directing TV episodes as far back as the '90s, but now he's getting his feature film face on. A couple years ago he dropped his debut, "Bad Words," and now he's back with "The Family Fang," which has a pretty good roster of talent to tell this story. Just a few years ago, Jason Bateman delivered his directorial debut Bad Words, translating his knack for comedy and drama fairly well behind the camera. He’s now returned with The Family Fang, which follows the director playing a brother to Nicole Kidman‘s character, as they go on a search for their bizarre parents, which just might be yet another gag. Adapted by David Lindsay-Abaire (who worked with Kidman on Rabbit Hole) from Kevin Wilson‘s novel, the first trailer has now landed, which features our quote from the Tiff premiere.

★☆☆☆☆ The Family Fang (2015) is Jason Bateman's second directorial undertaking. Known predominantly for his work in Arrested Development, feature film comedies and oddball roles in more serious pieces, Bateman proved in this year's The Gift (a scintillating debut picture by Australian actor Joel Edgerton) that he has a far greater acting range than many give him credit for. Sadly, his sophomore appearance behind the camera shows nothing of the same encouragement. Based on a comic novel by Kevin Wilson, it is an attempted meditation on the effects of failed parenting, vicarious living, and the creation of true art; with a pinch of mild sibling incest thrown in for good measure.

This was not the 40th edition of the “Festival of Festivals” that Toronto was hoping for. The 2015 Toronto International Festival began with legal issues forcing the Aretha Franklin concert documentary “Amazing Grace” to cancel its opening night slot and has pretty much ended with the withdraw of the Amber Heard drama “London Fields” after director Matthew Cullen took the film’s producers to court claiming (among other things) that they re-edited the film without his input. Considering how weak the world premieres were overall this year it was par the course for a festival’s whose opening weekend was colder and rainier than in recent memory. Granted, There were certainly a lot of good movies that screened at the fest this year, but almost every single one of them debuted somewhere else. That’s not good for an event that considers itself one of the premier film festivals in the world.

Jason Bateman’s directorial debut, Bad Words, which premiered at Tiff two years ago, was a movie that kept its audience at arm’s length, featuring a difficult protagonist and an absurd premise. And yet, it was a film that, shocking and off-putting at first, grew on me. Now, upon viewing his sophomore directorial effort, The Family Fang, it’s beginning to look like this gradual onset of appreciation for the work is a defining quality of his filmmaking.
That seems fitting: Bateman himself seems like something of a late bloomer, an actor who really found his form after twenty years in the business (granted, he started out very young), and has only recently ventured into feature film directing. Similarly, as a screen presence, Bateman’s is a persona that is moderately likeable at first, but it’s only after sitting and watching him for a while that it dawns...

There's an illuminating moment late in Jason Bateman's richly captivating film of The Family Fang, when the unorthodox patriarch played with a sardonic glint by Christopher Walken says to his adult offspring, "You think we damaged you? So what! That's what parents do." That's close enough to a key to this smart, tart adaptation of Kevin Wilson's best-selling 2011 debut novel, which thumbs its nose at the clichés of the over-trafficked dysfunctional family genre to dissect the sometimes lifelong quest of children to understand their parents in ways that are funny and bittersweet, poignant and often bracingly dark.

The Family Fang just got a bit more bite with word that Christopher Walken has signed on, joining a cast that's fronted by Nicole Kidman and Jason Bateman. Variety reports Christopher Walken will play Caleb Fang, patriarch of the titular family. Bateman and Kidman will play his grown children, Annie and Buster. On top of that, Nicole Kidman and Jason Bateman will pull double duty with the former producing the project, and the latter directing. Based on the best-selling novel by Kevin Wilson, The Family Fang centers on the titular clan who is deeply dysfunctional thanks to the vocation of mother and father Camille and Caleb, performance artists who put their craft above everything else, including their children. Throughout their childhood, Annie and Buster were the unwilling subjects of their parents' various works. As adults they stayed far away, but when both are in need of some sanctuary they return...

I recall reading a review of Kevin Wilson’s The Family Fang when the book came out back in 2011. It not only sounded like an interesting story, but also a tale worthy to be made into a film from the likes of Wes Anderson. Now the book is indeed on track to becoming a film, but unfortunately Anderson is nowhere near it. Instead, actor Jason Bateman plans to both direct and star in the project.
Deadline (via First Showing) reports that Bateman is currently in talks to both direct the film and co-star alongside Nicole Kidman. The film will tell the story of Annie and Buster, the children of Caleb and Camille Fang, who are the constant and unwilling stars of their parents’ bizarre and subversive art projects. It’s not yet clear whether Bateman and Kidman will play the grown-up Annie and Buster, or Caleb and Camille, although based...

The 2013 Toronto Film Festival premiered Bad Words, the directorial debut of "Arrested Development" and Horrible Bosses star Jason Bateman, and he's already lining up his sophomore effort behind the camera. Deadline reports Bateman has been tapped to direct an adaptation of The Family Fang, Kevin Wilson's book of the same name. Nicole Kidman has been attached to produce and star in the film for awhile, and she's given her seal of approval for Bateman to not only direct, but co-star in the film as well. Qed International is financing the film with the hopes of production starting early in 2014. What's the story? The synopsis of the book is as follows: Annie and Buster (popularly known as Child A. and Child B.) are the unwilling stars of their parents’ chaotically subversive work. Art is truly a family affair for the Fangs. Years later, their lives in disarray, Annie and Buster...

Jason Bateman has earned a reputation as a comedian with his roles in the cult sensation Arrested Development, the bittersweet teen comedy Juno, and the dark and demented Horrible Bosses. But when he's not headlining laffers, he's been directing them. After years of dabbling in directing television shows like Family Matters, Two of a Kind and Arrested Development, Bateman made his feature directorial debut this year with the Andrew Dodge-penned comedy Bad Words. The film, which made its world premiere at September's Toronto International Film Festival, apparently impressed Nicole Kidman in addition to critics, and she's hired Bateman to direct her next project, The Family Fang. Deadline reports that he will not only direct the feature, but will also co-star opposite Kidman, who will produce the pic as well. Based on Kevin Wilson's bestselling novel, The Family Fang centers on a family whose lives are entirely dedicated to...

Back at Tiff in September, Jason Bateman arrived to show off his directorial debut, "Bad Words." The foul-mouthed, acidic comedy wasn't one we particularly cared for, but as we noted in our review, it showed that Bateman could "could put together 90 minutes of a story tightly and cohesively." And it seems that for Nicole Kidman, that's good enough. You never know which of the many projects the actress has percolating will suddenly move forward, and today it's "The Family Fang," as Bateman has been tapped to direct. The film has been brewing since 2011, and is an adaptation of the Kevin Wilson bestseller which follows a couple of performance artists who regularly use their children as part of their bizarre acts during their formative years. When the now fully grown children return home at the height of a family crisis, they are once again recruited to help in the dangerous execution...

2010 certainly wasn’t a lackluster year for film, perhaps that’s why “Shortbus” helmer John Cameron Mitchell’s emotionally gripping “Rabbit Hole” was seemingly swept aside. Telling the story of a grieving couple coming to terms after their young son dies in a horrific accident, it was a heartbreaking tale that we liked quite a bit, and so we were pleased to hear last February that Kidman would be teaming up again with “Rabbit Hole” producers for the familial comedy-drama “The Family Fang.” Now it looks as if producers are hoping to add a little more of what made their previous film work so well, in the form of a script by “Rabbit Hole” playwright and screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire.

Playwright-turned-screenwriter David Lindsay-Abaire quite memorably adapted his own Pulitzer prize-winning work for the Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart-starring Rabbit Hole, an intense family drama directed by John Cameron Mitchell that centered on a couple attempting to recover from the sudden loss of their young son. The 2010 drama was one of the year’s best, thanks in no small part to Lindsay-Abaire’s script and Kidman’s powerful Oscar-nominated performance, so it’s certainly good news that the two are pairing up again for another film about a different sort of family and their own set of troubles. Deadline Douglaston reports that Lindsay-Abaire will adapt Kevin Wilson’s novel “The Family Fang” for the screen, with Kidman starring in and producing the project.
