It’s been more than 40 years since the Ivory Coast first won an Oscar for Best International Feature — then known as Best Foreign Language Film. Could the African nation win again for the critically acclaimed film “Night of the Kings”?
SEEKaouther Ben Hania (‘The Man Who Sold His Skin’) on her Tunisian International Feature Oscar contender: ‘This is not a classic refugee story’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
“Night of the Kings” is only the third film submitted to the Oscars from the nation, though their success rate is pretty good given their infrequent entries. They won the award for the anti-war satire “Black and White in Color” (1976), the directorial debut of French filmmaker Jean-Jacques Annaud, who went on to direct one other Oscar nominee, but representing France, “Betty Blue” (1986).

The Oscars announced their Best Documentary Feature shortlist on December 16, and out of the 15 contenders still in the competition, it turns out the magic number is 11. Specifically, “Apollo 11,” which is the front-runner to win according to the predictions of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from top media outlets since the academy revealed its semifinalists.
“Apollo 11” uses archive footage to dramatize the space mission that landed Neil Armstrong on the moon 50 years ago in 1969. As of this writing 11 out of 19 Experts are predicting it to win: Edward Douglas (The Beast), Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), Tariq Khan (Fox TV), Andrea Mandell (USA Today), Scott Mantz (Collider), Jack Mathews (Gold Derby), Wilson Morales (BlackFilm), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Christopher Rosen (Decider), Jazz Tangcay (Variety) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby).

It’s been an up-and-down awards season for “Little Women.” It was one of the biggest films at the Critics’ Choice Award nominations with nine bids, but then it only earned two Golden Globe nominations, and it was shut out entirely by the Screen Actors Guild. Can it rebound at the Oscars? If nothing else, it looks like Greta Gerwig is still on track for a Best Director nom, according to the predictions of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed as of this writing.
Gerwig ranks among the top five likely nominees in our Experts’ predictions, with 14 of them betting on her to make the cut: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Erik Davis (Fandango), Eric Deggans (NPR), Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), Alicia Malone (Turner Classic Movies), Andrea Mandell (USA Today), Scott Mantz (Collider), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Kevin Polowy (Yahoo), Claudia Puig (Kpcc), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Brian Truitt...

The Oscars don’t usually care for horror movies, and they don’t usually remember movies that opened way back in February, but Jordan Peele overcame both of those factors with his 2017 sleeper hit “Get Out.” So are we underestimating his 2019 sleeper hit “Us,” which also received critical acclaim and was a box office success (more than a quarter of a billion dollars grossed worldwide)? Specifically, I think Lupita Nyong’o could ambush the Best Actress race — with or without her scissors.
Nyong’o was an awards darling for her breakthrough role as the enslaved Patsey in “12 Years a Slave” (2013), which ended up winning her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. She has worked steadily since there, both in front of the camera and in voice-over roles, but “Us” is arguably her juiciest acting showcase since that victory.

Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”) has won the Golden Globe, BAFTA Award, Directors Guild Award, and a slew of critics awards for helming his semi-autobiographical drama about life in Mexico City in the 1970s, so he’s pretty much unbeatable at the Oscars, right? Well, most of us are betting on him to prevail, but out of the thousands of users currently making their predictions at Gold Derby, there are many who are boldly betting on an upset.

The Oscar race for Best Supporting Actor is shaping up to be all Mahershala Ali all the time for “Green Book,” but is there a chance Sam Elliott (“A Star is Born”) could still upset for his role as tortured musician’s manager? It looks like a long shot, but this particular Oscar category often serves as a de facto lifetime achievement award, and as such Elliott could follow a trajectory similar to James Coburn‘s victory for “Affliction” (1998).
Coburn was a veteran actor who had never received an Oscar nomination before, just like Elliott. And Coburn had inconsistent results at precursor events, only earning nominations from the Screen Actors Guild and Independent Spirit Awards before his Oscar win — and he had lost both of those. Likewise, Elliott has had mixed results, earning nominations at the Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards but missing out at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs.

Up until this week, I was predicting that “Rbg,” the Oscar-nominated documentary tribute to the wonder woman who is Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg would win, mostly because of its medicinal effect on our uncertain times. It gets many things right, like highlighting her nearly half-century love story with her devoted husband, Martin, her odd couple friendship with fellow Justice Antonin Scalia and her career-long dedication to fighting on behalf of women to be treated as equals in the eyes of the law.
But “Rbg’ has one major flaw that is simply the fault of Ginsberg’s profession. We can’t eavesdrop on her arguments in the Supreme Court or witness her as she delivers those scathingly brilliant dissents in real time. Basically, we rummage through her closet and see her jazzy array of jabots that she wears with her robes. And we can hear her arguments for her landmark cases over the years.

“Black Panther” wasn’t even nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design at the BAFTAs, but the Expert journalists we’ve polled think the Marvel blockbuster will win both categories at the Oscars against BAFTA champ “The Favourite.” Are they right?

“Roma” may have won only four BAFTAs to those seven for “The Favourite” but this haul included the top prize of Best Picture. Multi-hyphenate Alfonso Cuaron shared in that win as well as the one for Best Foreign Language Film and claimed the other two on his own for directing and lensing this intimate memoir.
Heading into these precursor prizes, his film was already out front to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Mindful that the British academy often previews the Academy Awards, our Oscar experts from major media outlets have been busy updating their predictions. All but four of our 24 pundits are now predicting “Roma” to prevail on February 24. That support translates into leading odds of 4/1 for it to take the top prize at the Academy Awards.
Three of our Oscarologists favor SAG Awards winner “Black Panther” while one is expecting PGA champ “Green Book” to pull off an upset.

In the wake of the 2019 Academy Awards nominations announcement on Jan. 22, our Oscar experts from major media outlets have started to make their Best Picture predictions. Alfonso Cuaron‘s memoir “Roma,” which reaped a leading 10 nominations, has the early lead with 14 of our 16 pundits predicting it to win on February 24. Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” has the backing of just two experts. None of the other six nominees is predicted to prevail in the top race at the 91st Academy Awards.
That support for “Roma” gives it odds of 39/10 to take home the Best Picture award while “BlacKkKlansman” has odds of 6/1 to pull off an upset. With the Critics’ Choice Awards just hours away on Sunday January 13, our 30 Oscar experts from major media outlets are hoping to get guidance from these key precursor prizes as to what will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Their votes remain split between four films, with two of these far out front of the other two.
Since being all but shut out of the Golden Globes, “A Star is Born” has seen its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race at the Oscars shrink. It now leads our experts tally by a vote of 16 to 10. Three of our experts are holding out hope for “Green Book,” which won Best Comedy/Musical at the Globes while one is backing “BlacKkKlansman.” [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 30 Experts.]
Although “A Star is Born” enjoys a clear majority of first-place votes from the experts, it is not that far ahead of “Roma” and “Green Book” on our Best Picture odds chart.

Amy Adams and Christian Bale have co-starred in three films together now: the boxing drama “The Fighter” (2010), the caper film “American Hustle” (2013) and now the political satire “Vice.” As of this writing we think they’ll both be nominated for Oscars for their latest roles, so they might want to keep these collaborations coming because if we’re right, they will have earned nominations for all of their movies together.
For “The Fighter,” Bale won Best Supporting Actor for playing cocaine-addicted former boxer Dicky Eklund, who trains his brother Micky (Mark Wahlberg) for a career in the ring. Adams was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for playing Micky’s girlfriend Charlene, but she lost to her co-star Melissa Leo as Micky and Dicky’s brash mother.

Mary Poppins is returning to theaters next month, but will she also return to the Best Actress Oscar race? It’s starting to look like that. Emily Blunt has climbed up three spots in our combined odds, from 10th place to seventh, since “Mary Poppins Returns” started screening last week for the industry and press.
While official reviews for the film are still under embargo, the sequel and Blunt herself have earned high praise on social media. We can confirm that Blunt is practically perfect in every way as Mary Poppins and more than met the challenge of filling the shoes of Julie Andrews, who won Best Actress for the original 1964 film. In the seven years since the academy went to a variable number of Best Picture nominees, the winner of the top prize has not also claimed Best Director four times. And according to the predictions of our Oscar experts, this scenario is likely to play out again this year with Bradley Cooper‘s remake of “A Star is Born” winning Best Picture but Alfonso Cuaron picking up his second Best Director Oscar for “Roma.”
Of our 29 Oscarologists, a whopping 25 of them are forecasting that Cuaron will win a bookend (but only three say his film will also prevail). That support gives him leading odds of 82/25. Four experts are backing Cooper (compare that to the 19 predicting that “A Star is Born” will win Best Picture), which translates to odds of 9/2. As more critics and audiences have gotten to see “Beautiful Boy” and “Green Book,” our Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor have taken a turn. “Green Book” star Mahershala Ali moved into the lead, while the former front-runner, “Beautiful’s” Timothee Chalamet, slipped a bit. But it’s far from an open-and-shut case. Voters may be reluctant to give Ali a second Oscar just two years after his victory in the same category for “Moonlight.” And five Experts are still backing Chalamet for the win.
Ali gets leading odds of 37/10 based on the combined forecasts of thousands of Gold Derby users. That includes a majority of the 29 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets. Ali benefits from the fact that “Green Book” looks like a stronger Best Picture contender based on our current forecasts, and it’s easier for an actor to win while riding a wave of support for a popular film.

“A Star is Born” and “Roma” lead the Best Picture race according to the predictions of the 25 Oscar Experts at Gold Derby. Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic has the backing of 13 of our industry insiders while 11 are forecasting a win for Alfonso Cuaron‘s family drama. Tim Gray of Variety is predicting that “Black Panther” will pull off an upset.
While “A Star is Born” has the edge among total number of experts, it is tied with “Roma” with odds of 7/1 to win Best Picture. That is because the latter is ranked slightly higher overall. Those rankings are why four films — “Green Book” (17/2), “First Man” and “The Favourite” (9/1), and “If Beale Street Could Talk” (10/1) — all have better odds than “Black Panther” at 12/1. Technically, “Roma” has more Oscar Experts at Gold Derby predicting it to win Best Picture (9) than “A Star Is Born” (7), but the films are tied for first place with 7/1 odds because the Bradley Cooper/ Lady Gaga musical is consistently ranked a bit higher among all 20 Oscarologists projecting 8 to 10 nominees in the category.
Only one other flick gets ranked first, too: “First Man” (15/2 odds) has support of four pundits. See all of the latest Best Picture rankings by our 20 Experts.
“Roma,” Alfonso Cauron‘s artsy-indie tribute to his childhood in Mexico, has been in a virtual tie with “A Star Is Born” for the past month while Gold Derby’s Experts made frequent changes that usually resulted in the rival films retaining equal numbers of Experts predicting them to prevail, or at least giving them equal odds.

Lars von Trier once had small-screen aspirations for “The House That Jack Built,” but his stab (sorry) at a serial-killing narrative premiered at the Cannes Film Festival Monday night. As promised, the writer-director brought gore to the Croisette; tickets even included a scènes violentes (“explicit violence”) warning. A notable segment of the 2,400-seat Grand Théâtre Lumière audience revolted against what they saw: Variety’s Ramin Setoodeh reported that 100 guests exited in protest, while others on social media estimated half the film-goers departed early:
I’ve never seen anything like this at a film festival. More than 100 people have walked out of Lars von Trier’s ‘The House That Jack Built,’ which depicts the mutilation of women and children. “It’s disgusting,” one woman said on her way out. #Cannes2018 pic.twitter.com/GsBGCoyHEG

Spike Lee is in the running for the Palme d’Or, at least if the first reactions to his latest film, the fact-based dramedy “BlackKklansman,” are to be believed. The film just debuted in competition at Cannes, where the story of some “fo real, fo real shit” (per its own trailer) offered up a new high for Lee’s work, while also providing some canny comparisons to the current culture. IndieWire’s own Eric Kohn called the film “electric” and Lee’s “most entertaining film since ‘Inside Man,'” while The Guardian’s film critic Peter Bradshaw compared it to a “pinball machine, pinging and flashing with N-bombs, blaxploitation tropes and unsubtle Trump premonitions.”
One recurring theme throughout the first reactions out of the premiere: It’s Lee’s best film in years, and one arriving at a crucial time. The film reportedly earned a 10-minute standing ovation, with a...

Almost 7,000 people worldwide predicted these Academy Awards winners in 24 categories. The ceremony was held in Hollywood and was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. Virk got 21 of 24 categories correct, but missed out on “The Shape of Water” for Best Picture (choosing “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” instead). He did get that movie’s director champ Guillermo del Toro and the four acting winners of Frances McDormand, Timothee Chalamet, Allison Janney and Sam Rockwell.

“Dunkirk” is ahead to win Oscars for Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing, and it’s no wonder since action-packed war movies often do well in audio categories. If the film indeed wins the award for its sound editing, it would additionally make history as Richard King would set a new record for the most wins in that category.
There is currently a six-way tie for the most Sound Editing wins. Ben Burtt, Charles L. Campbell, Per Hallberg, Richard Hymns, Gary Rydstrom and King have three victories apiece, including years when the prize was handed out as a special achievement award and not a competitive Oscar. King previously won his Oscars for “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World” (2003), “The Dark Knight” (2008) and “Inception” (2010), and he earned additional nominations for “War of the Worlds” (2005) and “Interstellar” (2014). Gary Oldman was considered a likely Oscar front-runner for “Darkest Hour” almost as soon as the first production still was released of him disappearing into the role of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. And the prosthetic makeup that helped him disappear became an Oscar front-runner just as quickly. With Oscar night approaching that hasn’t changed, especially with the film’s victories at the Critics’ Choice Awards, BAFTAs and Make Up and Hair Stylists Guild Awards. Kazuhiro Tsuji, David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick are the makeup and hair artists nominated for their work on the docudrama, and they’re the overwhelming favorites to win Best Makeup and Hairstyling with 1/10 odds.
Those odds are based on the combined predictions of thousands of users who have entered their picks at Gold Derby thus far. That includes 26 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets, 25 of whom are predicting a “Darkest Hour...

For most of the awards season “Jane,” which profiles primatologist Jane Goodall, was the Oscar front-runner for Best Documentary Feature — until of course the Oscar nominations were announced. “Jane” didn’t even end up with a bid, so now the race is wide open. But based on our latest predictions leading up to Oscar weekend the race will have an unusual outcome: “Faces Places” gets leading odds of 8/15 to win, which would give director Agnes Varda a competitive Oscar the same year she won an honorary Oscar.
It’s not uncommon for an artist to win both competitive and honorary Oscars in their career, and it’s not unprecedented to win a competitive Oscar after you’ve won your honorary award: for instance, actor Paul Newman and composer Ennio Morricone have pulled off that feat. But it’s unusual to receive both awards in the same Oscar season. The 89-year-old...
