It has been a high-profile 12 months for Mediawan Kids & Family thanks to subsidiary Method Animation’s involvement in the Ladybug & Cat Noir franchise, which has been enjoying box office success worldwide with a first feature film adaptation.
The IP, which was first developed as a series in 2015, is now under the umbrella of recently launched entity Miraculous Corp, a joint venture between co-creator Jeremy Zag’s company Zag and Mediawan Kids & Family parent group Mediawan.
This means that Method Animation is no longer involved in the franchise but Mediawan Kids & Family President Julien Borde says his division is busy developing and producing a raft of animated content, he believes has similar franchise potential.
“It’s one of the most successful independent franchises in the world and a fantastic success story,” he comments on Ladybug & Cat Noir.

France’s Mediawan has continued its acquisitions spree by acquiring Submarine, the international producer behind Richard Linklater’s animated film Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood.
The deal, financial terms of which were not disclosed, is for a majority stake in the company, which has offices in Amsterdam, London and L.A.
Mediawan, which last year bought Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment and has been expanding internationally, claimed the Submarine acquisition builds its “House of Talent” credentials. It is led by CEO Pierre-Antoine Capton, who struck a $107M co-development and financing deal with private equity Entourage Ventures earlier this year that Mediawan Rights boss Valerie Vleeschhouwer recently outlined in more detail in an interview with Deadline.

Leading Dutch animation studio Submarine has presented its latest TV series project based on the bestselling Max children’s books at Europe’s industry event for TV series-in-the-making in the south-eastern French city of Toulouse.
A pre-school series of 52 seven-minute episodes, “Max” is a character-driven show about a small kitten with a large appetite for adventure, who sees himself as a fearless predator but is just a little ball of fluff.
The series will embrace the simple, clear and colourful 2D aesthetic of award-winning British author and illustrator Ed Vere to allow the viewer to focus on the characters.
The team has enlisted the voice of British actor Ade Edmondson for the narrator’s voice in a show which producer Bruno Felix says is also very dialogue driven. The characters’ mouths, however, do not move: Instead, explains Vere, who is a Buster Keaton fan, the show will rely heavily on body language and facial expressions.

Director James Marsh is set to direct a new hybrid animated documentary feature for Submarine and Sandpaper Films.
“Oasis, Saving the Baghdad Zoo” (working title), is a feature-length animated documentary partly based on “Babylon’s Ark,” the book about a year-long rescue mission of animals abandoned across Baghdad by Saddam Hussein and his son Uday.
Billed as a 21st century Noah’s Ark, the film will show how a team of American soldiers, Iraqi zookeepers, and international volunteers tended to lions, camels, bears, exotic birds, monkeys, pigs and even an ocelot in the middle of a brutal war, risking their own lives in the process.
The zoo was first abandoned during 2003’s Battle of Baghdad, when Hussein’s troops battled the U.S. military. Amid the chaos and violence, a team of compassionate volunteers set out to find the zoo’s missing inhabitants, including a pride of lions tracked down...

The official trailer for writer/director Richard Linklater’s new film Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood has just been released, and you can take a look at it right here.
Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood tells the story of the first moon landing in the summer of 1969 from two interwoven perspectives; the astronaut and mission control view of the triumphant moment, and through the eyes of a kid growing up in Houston, Texas who fosters intergalactic dreams of his own. Taking inspiration from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Richard Linklater’s own life, Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood is a snapshot of American life in the 1960s and the story is part coming of age, part societal commentary, and part out-of-this-world adventure.

Richard Linklater’s latest film “Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood” poses the question: what if the first person to walk on the moon wasn’t Neil Armstrong but was actually a kid from Houston leading a mission called Apollo 10 1/2 in secret because NASA accidentally built the space shuttle too small?
That amusing fantasy and twist on American history though is just the set up for Linklater’s latest and arguably most personal film, which just released its first trailer Monday. It’s one in which he explores the reality of what life was like in Houston, Texas in 1969 just before the moon landing, all seen through the eyes of a kid who lived right next door to all of it.

Linklater wrapped the live-action shoot this March in Austin, and the animation work will be completed at Minnow Mountain in Austin and Submarine in the Netherlands.

Netflix nabbed Richard Linklater’s “Apollo 10½,” an animated film set against the backdrop of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon.
The project, announced Thursday, coincides with the 51st anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11.
“Apollo 10 1/2” is inspired by Linklater’s childhood in Houston. Linklater directed from his own script, which attempts to interweave the astronaut and mission control view along with an excited child’s perspective, living near Nasa, but mostly watching it on television. The film centers around a kid’s fantasy about being plucked from his average life in suburbia to secretly train for a covert mission to the moon. The cast includes Jack Black, Zachary Levi and Glen Powell.
“It struck me years ago that this was my film to make, from both a chronological and proximity level – I was there, going into 3rd grade,” Linklater said in a statement. “Our unique animation style allows both...

CNN Films and Oscar-winning documentarian Roger Ross Williams are teaming for American Jail, a new film that explores what fuels the country’s prison system. The docu is set to premiere at 9 Pm July 1 on CNN.
The logline: Writer-director-producer Williams’ investigation presents a range of stakeholder positions and offers working examples of potential solutions, even traveling to the Netherlands for cases of success, to address the “prison pipeline” that criminalizes the mistakes of the poor and the vulnerable.
Using animation and commentary to illustrate the complexities of the challenge, Williams examines the history of incarceration in America and its origins in the practice of indentured servitude, and even slavery, as well as the need for labor to maintain and fuel the prison industry. He contends that poor people and minorities are more likely to receive the harshest penalties for nonviolent infractions and sometimes can pay a lifetime of punishment for...

Directing duo Femke Wolting and Tommy Pallotta have been recruited to work on the upcoming Warner Bros fantasy adventure.
The two filmmakers are currently in post-production on The Last Hijack, which combines animation and real footage to tell the story of a young Somali pirate preparing for what might be his last mission. It is set to premiere in Berlin’s Panorama Dokumente section next month.
The Incredible Mr Limpet, a remake of a 1964 movie that Richard Linklater is set to direct, is also set to combine live action and animation. Wolting and Pallotta have already begun working on design and animation for the project.
It reunites Pallotta with Linklater after the pair worked together on live action/animation hybrids Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly.
Wolting said: “Tommy showed [The Last Hijack] to Richard Linklater, who we’ve collaborated with previously. Richard loved the animation technique that we used.”
There are few more details about the Limpet remake but [link...

“Tracking Shot” is a monthly featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at a dozen or so projects that are moments away from lensing and this October we see a couple of items that we could certainly circle as potential Cannes 2014 bait. Thanks to our friends at Production Weekly for the helping hand in curating our list of future must see items.
Among the top foreign film productions, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover‘s Peter Greenaway is looking at a late October, possible November start to begin filming a fragment of the great Soviet master filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein’s bio timeline. Eisenstein In Guanajuato will cover the portion of the filmmaker’s post Battleship Potemkin career, with Eisenstein landing in Mexico after Hollywood studios balked at the idea of working with him and in its place finds romance. The Girl Who Played with Fire‘s Daniel Alfredson...

Eight projects and in the running for the prestigious Arte Pixel Pitch Prize and new prizes have been introduced as cross-media content creation and distribution grow.
Power to the Pixel(PttP) has named the 30 cross-media projects which have been selected to participate in The Pixel Market 2012, its two-day co-production market to be held in London on 17 and 18 October, during the annual Cross-Media Forum held in association with the 56th BFI London Film Festival.
Watch the Power to the Pixel Introduction here:
Of the 30 teams, eight have been selected to compete for the prestigious Arte Pixel Pitch Prize, an award of £6,000 generously sponsored by the French/German broadcaster. The eight projects in the running for this prize will be presented at The Pixel Pitch, to be judged by a panel of international commissioning executives, decision-makers and financiers who face the hard task of choosing an ultimate winner. For participants and the audience of PttP delegates who will also be in attendance, The Pixel Pitch offers a unique opportunity to hear how cross-media projects are financed, and by whom.
Liz Rosenthal, CEO & Founder of Power to the Pixel said: “Making the selection of 30 projects for this year’s market was a hard task for all the right reasons. Creators are increasingly working on the development of their story ideas and content, and as a result this year’s Pixel Market and the whole arena is growing fast. We have selected 30 projects from nearly 100 entrants, well up from 25 last year which is hugely exciting for potential international partners and investors. As a result, this year's Pixel Market is bigger and bolder, with new prizes introduced to help support projects and their creators. We’re delighted to be expanding the opportunities that The Cross-Media Forum brings to the BFI London Film Festival and to the UK creative sector as a whole.”
The eight projects in competition at The Pixel Pitch include The Super 8 Complex, a user-generated interactive archive celebrating 8mm film, by award-winning production company Spring Films, the U.K. production partner of Werner Herzog Films. Jeff Norton, a finalist at last year’s Pixel Pitch, returns with his immersive dystopia Metawars. The Austrian-Iranian filmmaker Arash Riahi also makes a return: his project, Everyday Rebellion, was developed through PttP’s European cross-media workshop The Pixel Lab in 2010.
In addition, all 30 producer-led teams at the Market stand a chance of winning one of three new prizes, backed by international sponsors: the beActive Pixel Market Comedy Prize, the Mozilla Pixel Market Prize for Non-Fiction, and the Cinekid Pixel Market Prize, for projects aimed at children aged between 4 and 14.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on 18 October.
The Pixel Market is a unique event, dedicated to financing international cross-media properties. It puts the best cross-media projects from around the world on show in front of more than 100 leading international financiers, commissioners and decision-makers from film, broadcast, games, publishing, advertising, the arts, mobile, tech and interactive media, offering producers one-to-one meetings with these experts that could be decisive in taking their projects forward. It lies at the heart of PttP’s Cross-Media Forum, now in its sixth year, which covers the latest trends in audience behaviour and new business models in the cross-media and transmedia space.
The Pixel Market is supported by the Media Programme of the European Union. Additional support from the BFI, Arts Council England, Creative Skillset's Film Skills Fund, Canada Media Fund, Arte, Creative Industries Ktn, Telefilm Canada, beActive, Cinekid, Mozilla and Tribeca Film Institute.

The diversity of voices and projects presented here illustrate the unique opportunities that exist within the world of cross-media.”
Michel Reilhac, Executive Director of Arte France Cinéma said: "There is no better place today then the London Pixel Market to keep myself informed of the best transmedia stories in the making. It is a fast evolving new field and this is where I feel I can stay on top of what is happening creatively.”
