The people behind “Mo” can say with a perfectly straight face that the new Netflix comedy starts off with guns blazing. Toward the end of the pilot episode, “Hamoodi,” Mo Najjar (Mo Amer) gets caught in a shooting in a grocery store — whether it’s a “mass” shooting ends up being a topic of debate for the EMTs on the scene. Either way, it’s just another damn thing that messes with Mo’s day, and is arguably less (spiritually) damaging than what happens right before, with Mo seeing samples for chocolate-covered hummus (yikes) and convincing the worker giving out the samples that his mom’s homemade olive oil is all you need.
The shooting itself is depicted through off-screen sound and hard cuts that focus the viewer’s eye on little moments of detail, conveying the shock of the situation. But it’s also a little hilarious, too: Those details include the ripped,...

Lindsey Stirling's freestyle on Monday's Dancing With the Stars was one for the ages.
The acclaimed violinist hit the stage during the first night of DWTS' two-night finale, and performed a number tailored specifically to her amazing talents.
Set to the powerful string composition of "Palladio," Stirling and partner Mark Ballas hit the stage in stylized leather conductor's outfits and delivered a show-stealing number that blew the roof off the theater.
Incorporating elements from every style of dance Stirling and Ballas have performed throughout the season, their lengthy freestyle saw them dancing intimately together, then suddenly surrounded by other performers who lifted Stirling high in the air, and then performing side by side yet again, without ever missing a beat.
At one point, the 31-year-old musician danced while playing her violin, and continued to play as she was hoisted in the air and spun around by her imaginative partner.

On Monday, August 28, 2017, Turner Classic Movies will devote an entire day of their “Summer Under the Stars” series to the late, great Louis Burton Lindley Jr. If that name doesn’t sound familiar, well, then just picture the fella riding the bomb like a buckin’ bronco at the end of Dr. Strangelove…, or the racist taskmaster heading up the railroad gang in Blazing Saddles, or the doomed Sheriff Baker, who gets one of the loveliest, most heartbreaking sendoffs in movie history in Sam Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
Lindley joined the rodeo circuit when he was 13 and soon picked up the name that would follow him throughout the length of his professional career, in rodeo and in movies & TV. One of the rodeo vets got a look at the lank newcomer and told him, “Slim pickin’s. That’s all you’re gonna get in this rodeo.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of the Cannes Film Festival, the 70th edition of which starts this week, what is the best film to ever win the coveted Palme d’Or?
For a complete list of Palme d’Or winners, click here.
Erin Whitney (@Cinemabite), ScreenCrush
This question is impossible because I clearly haven’t seen all 40 Palme d’Or winners (it’s on my to do list, I swear). But I could easily say “Apocalypse Now,” “Paris, Texas,” “Taxi Driver,” “Amour,” or even “Pulp Fiction.” But since this is a personal question, I have to say “The Tree of Life.” No film has moved me...

Believe it or not, it’s never satisfying to dump on an actor or film series, even if the actor is a shitbag accused of domestic violence (ok, nevermind). That ugliness aside, what is up with Johnny Depp, his career and Five ‘Pirates’ films? One of the most respected actors of his generation way back when, working with some of the best filmmakers alive (Jim Jarmusch, Terry Gilliam, Michael Mann, Tim Burton), for over a decade now, Depp has taken almost exclusively tentpole movies that reek of paycheck gigs.

Hollywood has spent years trying to figure out a way to mount a live action “Pinocchio” movie. Guillermo del Toro, Stanley Kubrick, and Tim Burton have tried at various points to bring the fairy tale to life, while most recently, Paul Thomas Anderson penned a script for a movie Robert Downey Jr. has been shepherding for years (and at one time Ben Stiller was attached to direct).

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Another bad weekend where nothing really popped, which is bad news for a month at the box office where only Clint Eastwood’s Sully exceeded any expectations. Tim Burton’s new film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children came out just below my predictions with $29 million, but the Mark Wahlberg-Peter Berg disaster flick Deepwater Horizon was right around where I predicted with $20.2 million. The comedy Masterminds tanked with just $6.5 million for the weekend to end up in sixth place while Disney’s The Queen of Katwe did slightly better than predicted with $2.5 million.

Fox and Chernin Entertainment’s Miss Peregrine‘s Home ushered in a final $28.8M with hopes that the film will continue to play right into Halloween. Deepwa…...

With Tim Burton‘s recent disappointing comments on diversity still ringing in our ears, The Playlist attended Wnyc‘s event at The Greene Space, where host Rebecca Carroll (author and Wnyc’s producer for special projects on race) questioned, and occasionally grilled, guest Ethan Hawke in the inaugural edition of “How I Got Over.” Carroll’s new series aims to spark conversations about reinventing the language that we use around race, the implicit bias towards it, and how deeply ingrained it is in the American culture.

Tim Burton’s cinema is one of outcasts and misfits trying to find their place in the world, yet as the director has become more firmly ensconced in the blockbuster machine, his films have lost their uniquely strange, soulful personality; they now resemble gigantic, CGI-ified products stamped with a consumer-grade version of his eerie eccentricity. Such, alas, continues to be the case with “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” a by-the-books Ya affair that resembles “X-Men: First Class” retrofitted for the tween Hot Topic set.

Next week sees the opening of “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children,” Tim Burton‘s 18th feature film. Based on the delightful novel by Ransom Riggs, which is itself inspired by Riggs’ collection of vintage photographs, the film displays the sort of themes that you might, possibly foolhardily, immediately associate with Burton, as it features haunted children, gothic undertones, themes of solidarity among freaks and the noble but lonely plight of the eternal outsider.

Although Gene Wilder turned in dozens of memorable screen performances over the years, he is best known for one role in particular: the eccentric, reclusive confectioner in 1971’s Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory. For the last 45 years, Wilder and Wonka have been synonymous, and even a 2005 Tim Burton remake with Johnny Depp in the role could not change that. So what could be more appropriate than a portrait of Wilder as Wonka made entirely out of candy?
A few weeks back, artist Jason Mecier, whose work is both witty and pop culture savvy, unveiled just such a mosaic at the Giddy Candy Company in San Francisco’s Castro District. The work is gaining new attention now in the wake of Wilder’s death on Monday at 83. As Mecier himself puts it, “My Willy Wonka candy portrait lives on.” From the character’s dapper wardrobe to ...

During IFC’s “Stan Against Evil” panel at the Television Critics Association (TCA) Summer Press tour on Sunday, series creator Dana Gould promised critics, “I’m going to crack you bastards yet” then succeeded with a dig at director Tim Burton in his final minutes on stage. Praising the behind-the-camera team of “Stan Against Evil,” Gould — whose TV credits include “The Simpsons” and “Parks and Recreation” — joked that the show’s director of photography is named Tim Burton, who, “unlike the real Tim Burton, knows what a second act is.” “Oh yeah, I said it,” he said, following a big reaction from.

Anyone who watched The Good Wife will be willing to indulge Robert and Michelle King, that now-retired show's creators, as they launch their conceptually bizarre new summer series on CBS. BrainDead - even the inelegant title probably won't put off Good Wife fans - is a satire of Washington politics based on a horror premise borrowed from Invasion of the Body Snatchers. But at a certain point in the premiere you may decide that this isn't going to work. In my case, that point arrives when Tony Shalhoub, playing Senator Red Wheatus, tilts his head to the side and seems...

Alexa PenaVega and pro Mark Ballas brought a little Tim Burton flavor to Monday's Halloween-themed Dancing with the Stars.
The pair struggled last week, landing in the bottom two, but managed to earn straight 9s this week by paying homage to the 1990 Johnny Depp classic.
PenaVega chanelled Winona Ryder's Kim, while Ballas managed to dance in a full Edward costume, complete with giant scissors for hands.
"We worked so hard this week and it was time to rise to the occasion," PenaVega said afterwards.
In her exclusive People blog with husband Carlos PenaVega, PenaVega revealed how difficult preparing for the week had been.

The most honest magicians never use the word “magic” – they’re illusionists; they make believable that which can’t possibly be, and that’s what Harryhausen was: a master illusionist who made us believe that his table-top constructions of fabric and clay and metal were massive, mighty creatures out of legend, out of fantasy, out of our nightmares. He was a master of stop-motion animation; moving his creations a fraction of an inch per frame to create the illusion of flying saucers toppling the Washington Monument (Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, 1956), a tremendous octopus threatening the Golden Gate Bridge (It Came from Beneath the Sea, 1955), or an impossible prehistory of cave men battling dinosaurs (One Million Years B.C., 1966). When he passed, a generation of filmmakers who’d grown up watching his work at movie house matinees and Saturday night monster movie TV slots saluted him, acknowledging how his work had inspired them.

Tim Burton ended up in A&E on Monday (May 4) after sustaining an injury on the set of his latest film.
The director recently began filming Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children in Blackpool with the likes of Eva Green, Samuel L Jackson and Judi Dench.

The filmmaker's assistant reportedly asked the hospital to corner off a private area for him as he waited to be seen by medical staff.
