Lucasfilm is being taken to court by producer Karyn McCarthy, who allegedly accepted a deal to executive produce Star Wars series The Acolyte over a competing offer that would’ve made her the highest paid producer for Apple. She accuses the studio of breaching her contract in a move that deprived her of a high-profile credit on a major TV series from a competitor and, as a result, millions of dollars.
“Without explanation, without reasons, without justification, Lucasflm told McCarthy it wanted out of the deal,” reads the complaint. “By this time, the Apple offer was gone — Apple had to move on and found another executive producer for Sugar. McCarthy now had neither deal.”
Lucasfilm disputes there was a contract in place, according to the suit. It didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Director and producer Kevin Shulman was awarded $1.9 million after a jury found that he was cheated out of a producer credit in Manson family murders movie Charlie Says.
The decision by the jury in Los Angeles County, which came on Feb. 9 after less than a day of deliberations, included $1 million in punitive damages for fraud. The case is one of the few business disputes concerning producer titles that have gone to trial, with most being resolved in arbitration or settling, and could inform the valuation of such posts in future legal battles.
The jury concluded that Kevin Shulman’s contract was breached when he was blindsided by an eleventh-hour deal reducing his role to co-producer and fee to $15,000 after working on the movie for eight years, including when he was undergoing treatment for cancer. Damages were calculated, in part, by determining work that would’ve come his way if he...

A breach of contract suit over claims that producer and director Kevin Shulman was shut out of Manson family murder movie Charlie Says goes to trial on Monday, setting the stage for a showdown on whether he was cheated out of a producer credit and the fees to go along with it.
Shulman and Jeremy Rosen allegedly entered into an oral agreement in 2010 to develop and produce a film based on the Mason family murders. Together, they optioned the rights to Ed Sanders’ 1971 novel The Family and set out to assemble a team of investors and crew. They drafted producer Dana Guerin and reunited screenwriter Guinevere Turner and director Mary Harron, known for their work on American Psycho.
Under their deal, Shulman and Rosen agreed to equally share all producer fees, as well as any back-end fees and participation, to be no less than five percent of the 5.5 million budget,...

Exclusive: Producer and director Kevin Shulman (Her Dark Past) has filed a fraud and breach of agreement lawsuit against the producers of Mary Harron-directed Manson Family drama Charlie Says, which recently debuted at the Venice Film Festival.
In the complaint, filed in L.A. Superior Court earlier this month, Shulman claims that producers Dana Guerin, Jeremy Rosen (his former business partner), John Frank Rosenblum and Cindi Rice cut him out of the movie while he was suffering from cancer. According to the paperwork, Shulman says the producers “underhandedly robbed him of credit and compensation” on a movie he originated and worked on for more than eight years.
The suit claims that the offer of a “drastically reduced and wholly inadequate credit of co-producer and a fee cut from 2.5% of the film’s $5.5M budget to a paltry $15,000 in ‘fixed compensation'” left Shulman “baffled” and “at a loss.”

It certainly seems to have grown from that premise. The film stars Eoin...

"American Psycho" film director Mary Harron and screenwriter Guinevere Turner are set to re-team on "The Family," a new project about the followers of Charles Manson that has been setup at Roxwell Films.
The procedural feature will look at the infamous Manson Family murders through the eyes of graduate student Karlene Faith as she works with three young, brainwashed women who were part of the cult.
Initially given the death penalty for their involvement in the nine murders, their sentences ultimately were commuted to life imprisonment. We'll see Faith's time attempting to teach the three women to grasp the reality of their crimes.
Turner is adapting Faith's non-fiction work "The Long Prison Journey of Leslie van Houten" and Ed Sanders' 1971 novel "The Family" for the script. Jeremy M. Rosen and Kevin Shulman will produce.
Casting is underway with shooting tentatively planned for summer in Los Angeles.

Former Doctor Who star Matt Smith plays Charles Manson in the crime drama, Charlie Says.
Charlie Says is one of two upcoming films to chronicle the historical homicidal Manson Family and its namesake, Charles Manson – whether or not that’s a good thing remains to be seen. While the oxygen in the proverbial Manson movie room will be hogged this summer by Quentin Tarantino’s star-studded cinematic release, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, another offering is getting the jump on things, this May’s Charlie Says, in which the former bow-tie-brandishing wielder of all things timey-wimey, former Eleventh Doctor Who, Matt Smith, will play the stabby Svengali.
