It has been a rollercoaster week for the BBC’s biggest entertainment show, Strictly Come Dancing.
The TV competition, which celebrated its 20th anniversary with a BAFTA award last weekend for Best Entertainment Show, is reported to be examining “serious complaints” made against one of its highest-profile dance professionals, who has this week quit the show.
The Times of London quotes a city law film who has told UK media that the BBC is now “evidence gathering” after allegations made against Giovanni Pernice, who has been with the show for over a decade and won it in 2021 with his partner, deaf actress Rose Ayling-Ellis.
And The Sun newspaper reports that actress Amanda Abbington, who was partnered with Pernice last year but left the show after a few weeks citing medical reasons, is one of the complainants, along with two unnamed others.

Strictly Come Dancing fans are heartbroken following the announcement that Len Goodman has died at age 78.
The former ballroom dancer was the head judge on the BBC One programme from its launch in 2003 until his departure in 2016.
He also served the same role on the American equivalent, Dancing with the Stars, from its 2005 premiere to 2022.
Since the news of Goodman’s death was announced on Monday (24 April), tributes have poured in from fans and friends, including his former Strictly co-worker Craig Revel Horwood.
Across both series, Goodman was highly respected by his colleagues and loved by viewers. Here are se-ven! of his best moments.
“Pickle me walnuts”
Goodman was known for his colourful turns of phrase when describing performances that particularly entertained him.
In 2007, he was particularly moved by a ballroom dance performed by eventual winner (and later judge) Alesha Dixon and professional dancer Matthew Cutler.

Shirley Ballas’ future with Strictly Come Dancing has been decided weeks after hinting she might quit.
Ballas has been a judge on the BBC dancing competition since 2017, having been brought on to replace Len Goodman as head judge.
However, Ballas suggested she was considering stepping away from the series after reaching an “all-time low” during the 2022 series.
“Last year, I was struggling,” she told The Mirror last month, adding: “It wasn’t just a little bit, it was a lot – the majority of it was in silence.”
Ballas said she received “truly awful” messages from online trolls, stating: “I felt the abuse snowballed out of control and impacted me in such a negative way. I’m a pretty stoic person, and I tend to hold everything in.”
When asked whether the online abuse would ever cause Ballas to quit, she said: “It was a difficult series, I’ll leave it at that.

Strictly Come Dancing judge Bruno Tonioli has replaced David Walliams on Britain’s Got Talent.
In a video circulating on Twitter of a rehearsal, hosts Ant and Dec, who have just signed a three-year ITV contract, introduced Tonioli alongside fellow judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon. Reports had connected Tonioli with the role several weeks ago and it was confirmed by Fremantle shortly afterwards.
Tonioli will replace Walliams in the long-running hit ITV show, following a Guardian report late last year which included a recording of Walliams making derogatory remarks about contestants including calling one a “c**t” and saying of another: “She thinks you want to f**k her, but you don’t.”
Tonioli was a Strictly judge from its inception until last year when he was replaced by Anton Du Beke. The Dancing With the Stars judge had been absent from the 2020 edition due to Covid-19.

Hamza Yassin and Jowita Przystal had Strictly Come Dancing viewers and the judges in tears tonight (17 December) after performing their Couple’s Choice in the final.
The pair danced to “Jerusalema – Remix” by Master Kg featuring Burna Boy and Nomcebo Zikode, and were competing in the final against Fleur East and Vito Coppola, Molly Rainford and Carlos Gu, and Helen Skelton and Gorka Marquez.
“I get a little emotional watching you dance,” judge Anton Du Beke told them after they performed, “because it’s like the clouds part when you come onto the dance floor and the sun comes out.”
The famously grumpy Craig Revel Horwood gave them a score of 10, leading them to achieve their first perfect 40 of the series. He said: “Hamza, you’re everything I’m not, darling. You spread joy to the world… absolutely incredible.”

Strictly Come Dancing cut a snow-themed routine from its recent results show after three boys died in Solihull after falling through ice.
On Sunday (12 December) afternoon, three children aged eight, 10 and 11 slipped through thin ice at a lake in Solihull, dying in the water. A fourth boy, aged six, remains in critical condition in hospital.
You can follow updates on The Independent’s live blog here.
Monday night’s (13 December) Strictly results show was due to begin with a pre-recorded icy routine starring the professional dancers as snowflakes, while judge Craig Revel Horwood played the ice queen.
But despite Tess Daly referring to the dance at the end of the semifinal, the results show went ahead without the performance in the final cut.
While viewers questioned why the pro number, which would usually open the show, hadn’t aired, reports emerged that the BBC had pulled the segment following the tragedy in Solihull.

Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page has said that she hopes the show will return for a future Christmas special.
The Welsh actor starred opposite Mathew Horne in Ruth Jones and James Corden’s BBC sitcom, which originally aired from 2007 to 2010 and returned in 2019 for a one-off festive episode.
Appearing on Loose Women on Tuesday (13 December), Page said that, while she’d “love to do another one”, she was unsure of the show’s future.
“I’ve honestly no idea,” Page said. “I’m just the same as everybody else because they don’t tell us. They don’t tell us anything and I’ve never ever asked.
“I’ve never said, ‘Oh Ruth, do you think you’ll do another one or is there going to be more?’ I’m just not that sort of person. I’ve always just thought, we’ll wait and see and if there is,...

Wednesday has hit a major landmark in its third week of streaming on Netflix.
The series, which launched on the platform on 23 November, has become one of only three programmes to garner one billion views within its first month.
Only Squid Game and Stranger Things season four have reached this achievement before.
Wednesday has thus surpassed Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story to become the second-most watched Netflix programme in the English language, behind Stranger Things.
The series features Jenna Ortega as the eponymous character and the daughter of the Addams Family.
According to Variety, Netflix measures its most popular list by the number of hours watched in its first 28 days of availability. This time period saw Dahmer, starring Evan Peters as the eponymous serial killer, reach 856.2 million hours.
Wednesday has passed this number and still has a week left to hit its month mark on the platform.

Launching on Netflix on 23 December, Rian Johnson’s sequel to his critically acclaimed 2019 murder mystery, returns with Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc. This time, he is enlisted to solve a murder that occurs on tech billionaire Miles Bron’s private Greek island.
On the latest episode of Variety’s Actors on Actors, Hudson spoke with Top Gun: Maverick’s Glen Powell about the challenges they faced while filming their newest projects during Covid.
“It took a year-plus to actually shoot the movie,” Powell said of his Tom Cruise-led action film. “Tom’s a perfectionist, and so he was like, ‘We got to get it right.’ And I saw the movie, and then Covid happened, and I was like, ‘Oh, man, we’re sitting on this awesome thing.

Anton Du Beke has explained why he voted to save Will Mellor over Fleur East in the Strictly Come Dancing semi-final.
After a high-scoring semi-final on Sunday (11 December) night, East and partner Vito Coppola found themselves in the bottom two with Mellor and Nancy Xu.
After the couples performed again, both Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse voted for East. But when the vote came to Du Beke, the former pro dancer said that East and Coppola had made “an error in a dismount from a lift”, and he wanted Mellor to go through.
The casting vote was then given to head judge Shirley Ballas, who voted for East and Coppola, and sent Mellor and Xu home.
However, on social media, many viewers suggested that the judges had made the wrong decision and that Du Beke was correct to take into account East’s mistake.

A Strictly Come Dancing contestant has been eliminated from the show just one week before the final.
On Sunday (11 December), the remaining celebrities performed two dances in the hopes of scoring a place in next week’s final.
Sadly, actor Will Mellor fell at the final hurdle and became the 11th person to be voted off this year’s series.
Mellor was in the dance off with singer and radio presenter Fleur East. Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse opted to save East, but when Anton Du Beke saved Mellor, it was down to head judge Shirley Ballas to cast the deciding vote.
“First of all, the British public has spoken and with respect I take that on board,” Ballas said. “My fellow judges have decided that they don’t agree, so I have made lots of notes here. Both couples were outstanding and, not only today, but through the series.

Craif Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse opted to save Rainford after both couples performed their routines again, with Anton Du Beke saving Marsh.
Head judge Shirley Ballas saved Rainford, sending Marsh home – but all the judges said it was a “difficult” decision.
Speaking about the result, Marsh, who missed last week’s show due to Covid, said: “Honestly I’ve loved every single second that I’ve been here. I never thought I’d get to this stage, in a million years. I have to say, it’s all down to this man [Graziano Di Prima] here, he is just...

During Saturday (19 November) night’s Blackpool extravaganza, in which the show returned to the Tower Ballroom for the first time since 2019, singer East and her partner Vito Coppola performed to a Destiny’s Child megamix.
In the video airing before the routine, East explained how her parents had always encouraged her to follow her childhood dreams of singing.

Fleur East and Vito Coppola received the first perfect score of Strictly Come Dancing 2022.
During Saturday (19 November) night’s show, the dance competition series returned to the historic Blackpool Tower Ballroom for the first time since 2019.
Singer East and Coppola performed second to last with a Couple’s Choice routine to a Destiny’s Child megamix, including the songs “Jumpin’, Jumpin’” and “Lose My Breath”.
After performing the fast-paced routine, judge Craig Revel Horwood – who was yet to get his 10 paddle out this series – told East: “One word, three syllables, beginning with F: fab-u-lous.”
Motsi Mabuse said that East was the missing member of Destiny’s Child, while Shirley Ballas said it was an “iconic routine that will go down in history”.
Anton Du Beke praised East’s control, saying that the dance was “as good as we’ve done, ever”.

It says a lot that Katya Jones winning Strictly Come Dancing in 2017 is arguably the least interesting thing to happen to her since joining the show. Along the way, the Russian dancer has faced scandals, divorce and arguments with her partners, while honing a skill for polishing untrained celebrities into dance diamonds. Where certain pros who may now sit on the judging panel would get lumped with a “joke” contestant like, off the top of my head, Ann Widdecombe, and accept that stereotype, giving them unchallenging choreography and even, say, dragging them around the floor, Jones never does. For her, there are no “joke” contestants. Not Ed Balls. Not Tony Adams.
On day one of her first season in 2017, the pro was dropped in at the deep end. Partnered with Balls, a former shadow chancellor famous for, among other things, tweeting the words “Ed Balls” with no explanation, she chose to swim.

‘I’m so sorry they didn’t like it:’ Ellie Taylor left upset by ‘cruel’ comments from Strictly judges
Ellie Taylor apologised to Johannes Radebe after “cruel” judges’ comments in the latest episode of Strictly.
The comedian, who appears in Ted Lasso, performed a Rumba to Heart’s power ballad “Alone” on Saturday’s instalment of the BBC competition (5 November).
Shirley Ballas and Craig Revel Horwood were not fans of the dance, though, and gave Taylor negative comments and a score of five and three.
Despite awarding Taylor seven points, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke were also not as impressed as they have been in recent weeks.
Taylor appeared visibly upset by the comments, and, while being interviewed by Claudia Winkleman about the performance, said to her professional partner Radebes: “I’m just so sorry they didn’t like it.”
The comedian said that she struggled with the Rumba due to it being “emotional” and “serious”, adding that she finds it “hard to take myself seriously”.

James Bye has become the fifth celebrity to leave the ongoing 20th series of Strictly Come Dancing.
The EastEnders star was eliminated on Sunday 30 October along with partner Amy Dowden, after facing off against Fleur East and Vito Coppola in the dance-off.
For Halloween Week, Bye and Dowden performed the Charleston to “Bumble Bee” by Lavern Baker, but the judges ultimately ruled in favour of East.
All four judges voted in favour of East, with Craig Revel Horwood saying: “Well, it’s my responsibility to save the better dancer and the better dancer tonight for me was Fleur and Vito.”
“For me, there were different levels of dancing on the dance floor, and I have decided to save Fleur and Vito,” ruled Motsi Mabuse.

Strictly Come Dancing star Molly Rainford has apologised to her professional partner Carlos Gu for “letting him down” after they ended up in the dance-off.
During Saturday (22 October) night’s show, the pair performed a Couple’s Choice routine to the Grange Hill theme tune as part of the night celebrating the BBC’s centenary.
However, the routine was criticised by the judges, with viewers suggesting that Rainford and Gu had been “stitched up” by the “slow” musical choice which appeared hard to dance to.

The latest celebrity to be eliminated from Strictly Come Dancing has been revealed.
In Sunday night’s results show (23 October), comedian Jayde Adams became the fourth contestant to leave the BBC competition after a dance-off with Molly Rainford.
All four judges opted to save Adams after both couples performed their routines again, with Anton Du Beke calling the result “terrible”.
Speaking about her time on the show, Adams said: “This has been the best thing I have ever done in my life and I will carry it to my grave, and it has been an absolute pleasure working with you [Karen Hauer] and learning about so much that will go into my own stuff, in my own work. You are one of the most gifted people I have ever worked with, Karen. “

Shirley Ballas has spoken out against “hurtful messages” she has received following recent episodes of Strictly Come Dancing.
The professional ballroom and Latin dancer, who has been the head judge on the show since 2017, came under fire after choosing to save Richie Anderson instead of Fleur East on Sunday’s (9 October) edition of the show.
Her fellow judges, Craig Revel-Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke, had unanimously selected East and her partner Vito Coppola as the most skilled pair.
Although Ballas was ultimately overruled, some viewers disagreed with her opinion so strongly as to call for her removal from the programme, as well as accusing her of sexism.
A representative of Ballas firmly denied that sexism was part of Ballas’s judgement in a statement made to The Independent.
As well as this, the dancer and head judge addressed the backlash with a post on Twitter.

Strictly Come Dancing viewers have called for Shirley Ballas to be replaced on the judging panel following a dispute about her recent comments.
The professional ballroom and Latin dancer has been the lead judge on the BBC dance competition since season 15 in 2017, when she replaced Len Goodman.
After Saturday’s (8 October) episode, celebrity contestants Fleur East and Richie Anderson received the fewest votes from the public and were at risk of elimination on Sunday’s results show.
Both celebrities danced with their respective partners before the judges were asked which pair they’d like to save.
Craig Revel-Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke chose to save East and her partner Vito Coppola, securing their position in the next stage of the competition.

Strictly judge Motsi Mabusi described the BBC show’s latest result as “heart-wrenching”
In Sunday night’s episode (9 October), Richie Anderson and Fleur East were announced to have received the least votes.
After the dreaded dance off, the judges opted to save East, meaning Anderson was the second celebrity to be eliminated from the 2022 series.
Anderson was partnered with Giovanni Pernice, who won last year’s series with Rose Ayling-Ellis.
Anton Du Beke, Motsi Mabuse and Craig Revel Horwood all opted to save East. However, Shirley Ballas, who ishead judge, revealed she would have sent her home should she have had the casting vote.
Speaking while casting her vote, Mabuse said: “I think it’s heartbreaking actually because I think both of you do not deserve to be here but this is how the public voted and based on this dance off I’m going to save Fleur and Vito.

Strictly fans are pointing out an “ironic” detail regarding the song that opened the latest episode.
Movie Week arrived on the BBC dancing competition on Saturday (8 October), which was kicked off with a medley dedicated to Disney film Encanto.
Viewers watched on as the professional dancers performed to the song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”.
However, many found the song’s usage quite witty considering former judge Bruno Tonioli is no longer a part of the show, and has been fully replaced by Anton Du Beke.
“Anton ‘We do Not need to talk about Bruno,’” one person quipped, with another stating: “They’re right, no-one *does* talk about Bruno any more.”
One viewer called ”this music choice somewhat ironic given that @bbcstrictly doesn’t really talk about Bruno anymore.”

Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas has voiced her regret over the latest elimination on the hit BBC dance series.
Last weekend, Kaye Adams and Kai Widdrington were voted off the series after losing a dance-off to Bros star Matt Goss and Nadiya Bychkova.
Speaking on Wednesday night’s (5 October) instalment of The One Show, Ballas revealed that she thought the “far superior” contestant had gone.
“I just felt on the evening both couples made mistakes but the quality of Kaye was by far superior on that evening and I was absolutely mortified that she left, to be quite honest,” she said.
“I love my fellow judges and we’re all there to do a job, but in my opinion, that was one they didn’t quite get right.”
She continuted: “Sometimes I’m just delighted when they can agree and it’s not my job to send someone home.
