Last year, we learned that the home video distribution company Vinegar Syndrome is getting into making original productions, teaming up with the production company Not the Funeral Home, which brings the world the Shudder streaming series The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs, on the first of their Vinegar Syndrome Originals. That film is called Eight Eyes – and given the working relationship Not the Funeral Home has with Shudder, it’s no surprise to hear (via Screen Daily) that Shudder has picked up the North American streaming rights. A release date has not yet been announced, as the deal just happened.
Directed by The Last Drive-In director Austin Jennings, who also wrote the screenplay with Matthew Frink, Eight Eyes has the following synopsis: A mysterious local crashes a couple’s vacation through the former Yugoslavia, pulling them deeper into his web of psychic rituals.

Ahead of the film’s world premiere at Fantasia this summer, the next film from The Adams Family has received a release date this week.
Shudder will premiere Hell Hole on August 23, Rue Morgue first reported.
Fantasia previews, “A road trip through Canadian oil fields conjured up fantasies of secrets deep in the dirt for the Adams family, and inspired them to create Hell Hole, an indie rock-n-roll monster movie set at a far-away fracking site.
“Known for their DIY ethos, John and Lulu Adams and Toby Poser, partnering with Shudder, have joined the team behind The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs and FX legend Todd Masters to shoot their latest in Serbia with a local cast and crew.

In a career that has spanned seven decades, Roger Corman is nothing short of a legend. His influence and impact are almost immeasurable, having mentored or introduced so many prominent filmmakers working today. With the legend’s passing this weekend, it feels only appropriate to highlight just a handful of the essential Roger Corman horror movies on streaming. This week’s streaming picks celebrate some of the essential works of Roger Corman horror movies, whether he produced, directed, or appeared on screen.

Shudder is bringing the 1994 Danish thriller Nightwatch and its surprise sequel, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, to streaming this week, and we can exclusively reveal a clip from the upcoming sequel that introduces the film’s unsettling new villain.
Look for Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever to arrive on May 17, 2024.
Watch the new clip below, which features a deranged interrogation scene with a copycat killer, Bent (Casper Kjær Jensen). Is Bent just emulating killer Wörmer, or is there something even more sinister happening?
Original cast members Kim Bodnia and Ulf Pilgaard, along with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, reunite and reprise their roles from the 1994 film, which inspired the 1997 U.S. remake starring Ewan McGregor.
About the sequel: “22-year-old medical student Emma (Fanny Leander Bornedal) has just taken a job as the night watch in the same forensic department where her parents were once almost killed by the famed psychopathic police inspector Wörmer. The events...

Following the recent news that Chris Nash's critically-acclaimed slasher movie, In A Violent Nature, will be released unrated later this month, IFC Films has shared a new trailer for the highly-anticipated horror flick.
This latest teaser features quite a bit of intense new footage of Johnny stalking his victims, while also spotlighting some dialogue from the unfortunate soon-to-be very dead teens.
To be honest, it's not nearly as effective as the largely silent previous promos, which really presented the movie as something unique for the genre. This comes across very Friday the 13th, and there's even a nod to I Know What You Did Last Summer ("what are you waiting for? We're right here").
Check out the new trailer below along with some old-school lobby cards, and let us know what you think in the comments section.

While we continue waiting for the Friday the 13th franchise to get off its ass, at least we have fresh new original slashers – inspired by the 1980s classics – to keep us entertained.
Like Terrifier 2 before it, upcoming slasher movie In a Violent Nature is being released into theaters on May 31 in its Unrated form, and the new official trailer has arrived.
The unique arthouse slasher movie frames the slayings from the killer’s perspective, and audiences have already been losing their minds at the gory kills during preview screenings.
IFC Films will release In a Violent Nature exclusively in theaters on May 31, 2024, and you can expect the film to make its at-home debut on streaming service Shudder soon.

Shudder and IFC Film are on a roll. Their release, Late Night With the Devil, wracked up a truly impressive $10 million gross at the domestic box office this winter, despite only being in limited release and only playing during a short window before its streaming debut. They’re also getting a lot of fresh critical attention for Caitlin Cronenberg’s debut, Humane (check out our interview with the director here). Horror fans love Shudder (including us), and sure enough, it looks like they might have another big winner on their hands with the violent slasher flick In a Violent Nature.

When done well, found footage horror makes for one of the most immersive and unnerving viewing experiences. The inherent naturalism tends to make the horror feel more plausible and real. Found footage horror doesn’t need a huge budget or recognizable names among the cast to induce chills, either, and the lo-fi visuals only further add to the scares.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to found footage horror movies that excel with the format, delivering unsettling atmosphere and scares while making the most of their immersive, lo-fi aesthetics. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

We all love a "fun" horror movie, right? I'm talking about horror that feels like the cinematic equivalent of a roller coaster — fast, exhilarating, scary, but ultimately harmless. You buy the ticket and take the ride. But one of the things I love about the horror genre is that it's so damn flexible. On one hand, you can have fun horror movies like I just mentioned. And then there's the complete opposite: horror movies that make you squirm. Horror movies designed to make your skin crawl. Bugs, monsters, blood, body horror — the type of stuff that makes you feel like you need to take a shower after watching it. Those are the types of horror movies we're highlighting here — gnarly stuff, gross stuff, stuff that's going to make you feel more than a little icky. Be warned: it's about to get disgusting up in here.

Streaming services are the bane of my existence. It’s 2024 and there are so many options that it makes my head spin. Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, Paramount Plus, Prime Video, Peacock cover the main streamers but that’s not counting the niches. Like old cartoons? Check out Boomerang. Like anime? Then Crunchyroll is for you. But what about horror fans? Sure, Hulu has its “Into the Dark” label and Netflix is always releasing something horror-related (though I question the quality.) And the horror genre features multiple options with Screambox, Arrow Player, Full Moon Features, and even Tubi. But the subject of today’s spotlight is the best of them all, with a great Ui and wonderful selection of films, nothing can compete with Shudder.

As far as investigators go, Jim Rockford (James Garner) is a bit of a departure from the mostly-polished (Columbo excepted) detectives of television's first decade. A slouchily dressed detective who lived in a trailer and served time in San Quentin, Rockford was cool — if not always collected. "The Rockford Files" ran for six seasons on NBC beginning in 1974 and was later resurrected for a series of '90s TV movies. In that time, audiences were introduced not only to Rockford, but to a cast of supporting characters including his truck driver dad Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.), LAPD pal Becker (Joe Santos), and the con artist Angel (Stuart Margolin).
Garner passed away in 2014, and only a few "Rockford Files" castmates are still with us today. Those who are still around include notable recurring guest stars like famously mustachioed "Blue Bloods" star Tom Selleck, Egot-winning multi-hyphenate Rita Moreno, and "Happy Gilmore" director...

Now, thirty years after working on the original Nightwatch together, Bornedal and Coster-Waldau have re-teamed for a “30 years” later sequel called Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, which is set to be released through the Shudder streaming service on May 17th – and with that date just a month away, a trailer for the film has arrived online! You can check it out in the embed above.

"Isn't that Wörmer's signature?" Shudder has revealed the official US trailer for the Danish horror mystery sequel Nightwatch 2, known as Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, from the same Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal. Not to be confused with the two Russian movies Night Watch and Day Watch, this is not related - it's a new sequel to Bornedal's 1994 movie Nightwatch, which was remade into Nightwatch in 1997 with Ewan McGregor. The original also starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who has become considerably more famous after "Game of Thrones". In this sequel, Martin's daughter, Emma, takes up a night watch job to find out what happened to her parents almost thirty years ago. A meeting with Wörmer in his cell pulls the serial killer out of his coma and sets in motion a chain of fateful events. Starring Fanny Leander Bornedal, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Kim Bodnia, Sonja Richter, Ulf Pilgaard, Casper Kjær Jensen, Paprika Steen, and Nina Rask.

With the 2024 Overlook Film Festival now officially in the rearview mirror, the annual New Orleans celebration of all things horror has announced the winners of its audience and jury awards.
The festival’s top prize, the Audience Award for Feature Film, went to “Oddity,” Damian Mc Carthy’s home invasion horror flick that was a breakout from the SXSW 2024 midnight lineup.
“’Oddity’ delivers a brilliant, bespoke, and tightly entertaining string of ideas that work stronger as a collection — with even these missteps feeling like they branch from a unified center,” IndieWire’s Alison Foreman wrote in her Overlook review of the film. “Similar to Mc Carthy’s earlier ‘Caveat,’ this 98-minute treat demands to be reassessed a second time. Thank the wooden boy it’s coming to streaming: a triumphant addition to the director’s growing filmography and a standout in Shudder’s carousel of kick-ass ghost stories.”

When a streaming service has so much to offer it can be overwhelming, and instead of hunkering down with your popcorn for a movie night in, you end up scrolling in every direction, ultimately giving up in favor of another comfort episode of The Office. But now, The Criterion Channel is going to decide what you watch. No, it’s not some sort of spin-the-wheel-and-make-a-deal but rather a continuously running stream of movies from their catalog. That’s right, they’re making good on the “channel” part.
The streaming service, which launched in April 2019, sent an email to coincide with their fifth anniversary, which read: “Don’t know what to watch? Let us choose! Over on the Criterion Channel, we’re trying something new: Click on Criterion24/7 and drop into a steady stream of must-see movies, any time you want.”

Plot: A young woman inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement – Baghead – a shape-shifting creature that will let you speak to lost loved ones, but not without consequence.
Review: I always get excited whenever Shudder is releasing a new film to their streaming service that I know next to nothing about. Add in a recognizable actor and I’m ready for whatever comes my way. So Baghead had me interested with its vague title and inclusion of Freya Allan (who I love in The Witcher). The trailer made it look like a creepy look at the living’s relationship with death. And the original short film was creepy as hell! So I then proceeded to go on a journey of intrigue that was completely ruined by terrible storytelling and bad CGI.

Whether you love or hate them, remakes have been around for a long time, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. An update on The Crow is set to arrive this summer, with Hollywood’s version of Speak No Evil not far behind, just as two upcoming examples.
While not all remakes can hold a candle to the original, there’s been no shortage of fantastic movies that reworked genre favorites in thrilling new ways. Some of which even managed to eclipse the original classics, like 1986’s The Fly or 1982’s The Thing.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to horror remakes that set themselves apart from the source material, either through expanded storytelling or heightened, visceral horror.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

David Dastmalchian has starred in a string of successful films, like Oppenheimer, recently. The American actor has been a staple face in various superhero franchises throughout his career, but his latest film could not have been farther from the genre.
Dastmalchian’s new film, Late Night With the Devil, adds a new flavor to the horror genre. Dubbed one of the best indie horror films of late, it has been winning accolades and rave reviews, including from the master, Stephen King himself. Even though it breathes life into a tired and overworked category of films, Late Night With the Devil has one major flaw.

These past two years I've been fortunate to experience everything from a séance and a Vampire Ball to Halloween costume parties in April at The Overlook Film Festival (you can read all about it in my previous event report), and as I prepare to attend "summer camp for horror fans" for a third year in a row, the initial lineup for the festival's 2024 edition already has me wishing it were time to head to the Big Easy.
Brimming with must-see screenings and immersive experiences, the initial lineup for The Overlook Film Festival 2024 has plenty for horror fans to mark on their calendars between April 4th–7th, including Cuckoo, Abigail, I Saw the TV Glow, Blackout, a 50th anniversary screening of Phantom of the Paradise (with Paul Williams in attendance), and a 10th anniversary screening of Oculus with director Mike Flanagan, who will be in attendance along with Kate Siegel to...

Director Sébastien Vanicek’s debut feature Infested, a spider-filled French thriller that was formerly known as Vermin, won’t be released through the Shudder streaming service until April 26th, but it has already proved to be impressive enough to those who have already seen it (like Sam Raimi) that it landed Vanicek the job of directing the next Evil Dead movie. In anticipation of the Shudder release, a trailer for Infested has made its way online, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Shudder will be streaming the film in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
Scripted by Vanicek and Florent Bernard, Infested has the following synopsis: Kaleb is about to turn 30 and has never been lonelier. He’s fighting with his sister over a matter of inheritance and has cut ties with his best friend. Fascinated by exotic animals, he finds a...
