In a David Sedaris essay from Calypso, he mentions cussing across the globe, stating: “The Romanians really do lead the world when it comes to cursing.” Well, David, I wouldn’t be so sure. Australian-Macedonian director Goran Stolevski, whose thriller You Won’t Be Alone deservedly garnered much acclaim, has returned to his homeland of North Macedonia to make Housekeeping for Beginners, a swear-filled, raucous and deeply moving tale. In it, the director deals with the notions of family, institutional racism, LGBTQ rights and the meaning of love as viewed from the perspective of a dysfunctional ad-hoc household made up of potty-mouthed outcasts and misfits.
The story revolves around the matriarch Dita (the excellent Anamaria Marinca) who lives with her girlfriend Suada (Alina Serban), a Roma woman, and Suada’s daughters – the perennially angry teen Vanesa (Mia Mustafa) and the delightful six-year-old Mia (Dzada Selim). Also living in the house is...

Comedian Amy Sedaris is coming clean, admitting that she doesn’t watch close friend, Andy Cohen‘s Real Housewives, or any Bravo programming.
The duo are often found on a red carpet together or hitting the gym. But Sedaris has yet to dive into Bravo. “And it’s so great because we’re good friends and he doesn’t hold it against me,” she dished with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “But, you know, I haven’t gotten into the Housewives at all or any reality shows. But I’m not saying I never will.”
“I just did something with Michael Rapaport,” she recalled. Rapaport is a huge Bravo fan. But he is especially well-versed in all things Housewives. “He’s obsessed. He’s like, ‘You got to get into it. It is such good character work.’ So I promised him I’d get into it,” Sedaris said.

Penn Badgley has become one of the most familiar faces on television. Following his breakout role in the ultimate early-aughties teen soap "Gossip Girl," the actor has kept present on our screens as the star of "You," the pulpy Netflix thriller that has become a killer whodunnit. The series has marked a pivot towards more mature dramatic work in Badgley's career, but it's also inspired him to wade into more uncharted territory. In fact, his next venture might even be on a totally different side of the industry.
Longtime fans of "You" might be surprised to learn that Badgley has actually been working behind the scenes on the series as well. The actor has been credited as a producer for the entirety of seasons 3 and 4, working alongside showrunner Sera Gamble. Producing was a breath of fresh air for Badgley, who has been working as an actor for decades, and he...

Never Give A Sucker An Even Break was a 1941 movie from W.C. Fields. But it could have been the theme to Bill Maher’s Real Time on Friday night.
From Donald Trump’s latest foibles, through TikTok’s right to exist in the US, to the growing lost generation of young men, Maher and his guests tried to make sense of a world that seems to be flailing in its battle to find solutions.
Ultimately, Maher turned his guns on nepo babies, the children of the famous who feel they’ve hit a triple when they’re born on third base.
Maher’s New Rules editorial focused on the long string of Hollywood stars that got a leg up thanks to their connections, starting with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. “It doesn’t make them bad people or untalented,” Maher said. “But let’s also admit they weren’t the only...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
“80 for Brady” has plenty for LGBTQ moviegoers to be excited about. Not only does it star icons Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Rita Moreno and Sally Field as friends who take a trip to see Tom Brady play in the 2017 Super Bowl, but Billy Porter plays a halftime show choreographer in the Paramount Pictures comedy.
Now I’ve learned there was even supposed to be a gay kiss. So what happened? Gus Kenworthy says his cameo in the film originally included him “making out” with his on-screen boyfriend, played by “M3GAN” actor Brian Jordan Alvarez, but the scene didn’t make it into the 98-minute movie. “They said they had to cut it for time, but I think they cut it for Middle America,” the Olympic skier told me at the Gold Meets Golden benefit for Angel City Sports on Feb. 4 in Beverly Hills.

Moving into her mom’s basement was the best thing that’s ever happened to Heather McMahan. The comedian, who can be described as an auditory David Sedaris for the millennial set — she hosts the Absolutely Not podcast, where she works out emotional kinks on topics like friend breakups and traumatic celery juice regimens — recently started her second stand-up tour in as many years (she’ll do nearly 50 stops at major theaters by June). She’s also working on a pilot for NBC and putting the finishing touches on an hourlong special she produced herself. And, if you ask her, all of this came precisely because she left town.
McMahan had been living in L.A. and New York but returned to her native Atlanta with her husband to keep her mother temporary company (or so she thought) during the pandemic and amid the still-painful loss of her father to cancer.

Parachute Women by Elizabeth Winder (LoTurco Literary)
Everyone knows The Rolling Stones, but fewer know the four women whose sense of adventure and know-how helped build the band. Here, Winder puts Marianne Faithfull, Marsha Hunt, Bianca Jagger and Anita Pallenberg at the forefront of the story.
The Boys From Biloxi by John Grisham (The Gernert Co.)
The legal thriller author’s latest release is one of his most epic. It’s the story of two friends growing up in 1960s Mississippi as the drama of the Dixie Mafia — mobsters who ruled Biloxi — swirled around them, haunting the two protagonists into adulthood.

Penn Badgley’s production company Ninth Mode and producer Raven Tahzib have acquired the rights to the David Sedaris short story “Jamboree,” in order to develop it into a feature film. “Jamboree” was part of Sedaris’ 1994 book “Barrel Fever,” his first published collection of short stories and essays. In the story, a 16-year-old boy who lives in his older sister’s garage ends up being the caretaker of her baby.
“Jamboree” would be only the second time that Sedaris’ work has been adapted for film: 2013’s “C.O.G.,” from Kyle Patrick Alvarez, was based on an essay from the 1997 collection “Naked.”
Badgley recently wrapped the fourth season of “You,” which will be released on Netflix in two parts next year: The first batch of episodes will premiere on Feb. 10, with the rest dropping a month later, on March 10.

Recently, the comic essayist David Sedaris found himself in the midst of a short-lived cycle of criticism for a piece he delivered on CBS’s “Sunday Morning,” which was inelegantly premised on the idea that Sedaris wanted for himself the right to fire service industry employees at will. That this was plainly unworkable became the piece’s punchline, but the moment for this remained poorly chosen. It was easy to be annoyed with Sedaris for two minutes of blitheness, but, flipping through Sedaris’s new omnibus collection of his work over the holidays, this sense — for this reader, at least — faded. What a writer says, even in public, even on camera, lingers less than the work.

Tiffany Haddish may not have gotten an Oscar nomination for her breakthrough role in “Girls Trip” (2017), but by February she could still be halfway to Egot. She won an Emmy a few months ago for guest-hosting “Saturday Night Live,” and now she’s up for a Grammy. All she has to do is beat an ex-president.
Haddish is nominated for Best Spoken Word Album for “The Last Black Unicorn,” the audiobook version of her collection of personal essays. This is her first Grammy nomination, but she has been in a Hollywood honeymoon period since her “Girls Trip” breakthrough with a half dozen film and TV roles in just the last year. She also hosted the 2018 MTV Movie and TV Awards. She even appeared in the music videos for two Grammy-nominated songs: Drake‘s “Nice for What” and Maroon 5‘s “Girls Like You.”

Viola Davis will be stuck at Eot a little bit longer. The Oscar, Emmy and Tony champ only needs a Grammy to complete her Egot, but she failed to get a Best Spoken Word Album nomination on Friday.
Davis was contending with the audio version of her children’s book “Corduroy Takes a Bow,” which was released in September. The five-nominee Best Spoken World Album lineup includes Courtney B. Vance (“Accessory to War”), David Sedaris (“Calypso”), Questlove (“Creative Quest”), Jimmy Carter (“Faith — A Journey for All”) and Tiffany Haddish (“The Last Black Unicorn”).

The Us author behind Bored to Death and You Were Never Really Here on roaming New York sex shops and why he took his family for counselling before they read his book
Among the better known creations of the American comic author Jonathan Ames is the endearingly questing writer turned unlicensed private detective played by Jason Schwartzman in the HBO TV series Bored to Death. The character’s name is “Jonathan Ames”. The protagonist of Ames’s graphic novel, The Alcoholic, is called Jonathan A. The first person journalism Ames wrote in the 1990s was so outlandishly revelatory that it was widely thought the “Jonathan Ames” of the byline must have been a fictional construct. How revelatory? There was a piece about the brief sexual encounter that he found out two years later resulted in the conception of his son. Another about the night he smoked crack for the first time,...

When I’m lonely, I read.
I read at other times, of course. But books, unlike humans, are always there for me. Books don’t move away, die, or vote for Trump.
I bring this up because it’s part of my New Year’s resolution.
All of us, no matter who we might be, occasionally feel like we don’t fit in. We aren’t cool enough, or we have a funny name. We might be too fat or too thin, too tall or too short, too rich or too poor. We could be too dark or too fair. We might speak differently than other people. We might be too butch or too femme, too queer or too straight, too old or too young. We might be too nerdy or too much of a jock. We might feel so different from everybody else that we don’t even have...

Political dynasties may find no love from Americans these days, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love our comedy dynasties. Fans of David Sedaris and Amy Sedaris will agree a little nepotism isn’t always a bad thing, as well as those who ate crow when Abby Elliott proved herself worthy of the strings (real or rumored) pulled by her father, “Saturday Night Live” alum Chris Elliott, to get her an audition for the show that started his career. Now, two great comedic families finally join forces as Amy Sedaris and Chris Elliott play the world’s worst parents in “Thanksgiving,” a loopy family comedy that — like its target audience — could use an Adderall.

On Monday night, RuPaul's Drag Race will anoint its eighth winner, who'll catwalk out of the finale — taped last week at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles — $100,000 richer. “’I didn’t know you were gay,’ and I’m like, ‘Why did that make me feel good?’” So sayeth the great comedian David Sedaris in one part of the simple, but compelling documentary from Sundance Selects and IFC, Do I Sound Gay? A festival success from a Kickstarter campaign, the film follows Brooklyn journalist and activist David Thorpe after a break-up with his most recent boyfriend that sends him off on an investigation of the “gay voice” he hears from his own mouth, but feels increasingly disconnected from. With famous interviewees including Tom Gunn, Margaret Cho, and George Takei, the film thankfully relies more heavily on the filmmaker’s friends and family, giving the film a strong personal touch that isn’t lost in celebrity appearances.

For Kyle Patrick Alvarez, the route to a career as a director has been slightly less than orthodox. Now perhaps best known as the director of this year's "The Stanford Prison Experiment," Alvarez's life in film has taken turns from being the assistant to Warren Beatty to the adapter of work by author David Sedaris. In this week's episode of Indiewire Influencers, Alvarez talks with Indiewire Editor in Chief Dana Harris about all three of those experiences and some of his 2016 plans. "Every movie, I think you look back on and think 'Oh God, what was I thinking? That could have been such a disaster,'" Alvarez said. Those blinders to help get to that point were especially helpful on "The Stanford Prison Experiment," a film that involved a number of physical and psychological challenges throughout the course of the shoot. And the challenges were plenty before filming even started.

David Thorpe’s cultural exploration of the ‘gay voice’ makes cheerful viewing
A cheerful, highly personal investigation into queer cultural identity, Do I Sound Gay? begins with Us film-maker David Thorpe guiltily confessing that he’s never been comfortable with the inflections of his voice. He asks assorted friends, experts and entertainers for their take on the meaning and origins of what we think of as the modern “gay voice”, while warily taking a course of speech training to learn to “code-switch, but volitionally” (I’m not sure what it means, but it involves him walking around New York muttering “tilapia, tilapia”).
Among the interviewees are the inimitably voiced humorist David Sedaris (“Do I really sound like a woman? I sound like a very small man”). Thorpe’s exploration ultimately shines as much light on Us homophobia as it does on gay identity itself, and he ends up, as you might expect,...

Gayness is under the microscope, or rather in front of the microphone, in David Thorpe’s engaging autobiographical documentary
American writer-director David Thorpe turns the camera – or more importantly the microphone – on himself to create this engaging, lively documentary about gay identity. It starts with Thorpe explaining how, following a break up with a boyfriend, he comes to hate the way he talks and decides to see if he can eradicate all the up notes, longer vowels, and overenunciated consonants that mark out his voice as gay sounding.
In his quest to find out what it means to “sound gay”, Thorpe meets speech therapists, psychologists and experts in linguistics as well as various random famous people (Project Runway’s Tim Gunn, the writer-broadcaster and humourist David Sedaris, the comedian Margaret Cho and actor George Takei, among others) who all have, of course, wildly different opinions on the subject. But Michael “Rooster” McConaughey, age 61, would like to make your acquaintance, as one-half of the duo hosting West Texas Investors Club, a new reality show on CNBC. When I saw writer-director Kyle Patrick Alvarez's first feature Easier with Practice, based on a short story, I knew to keep this guy on my radar. For a first film on a shoestring budget, the film looks something born out of Hollywood. Smart move. Alvarez's next film, C.O.G., was also based on a short story, this one by David Sedaris. A fun and large fact about Alvarez: this young filmmaker is the first and only to get Sedaris' full blessing to adapt one of his stories into a feature film. Sedaris has given the green light to other filmmakers a few times before but changed his mind. Not for Alvarez. C.O.G. had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Do I Sound Gay?
Directed by David Thorpe
USA, 2014
The director (and star) of the new documentary Do I Sound Gay? isn’t comfortable with his voice anymore. Not only does David Thorpe want to jettison his “braying ninny” speech patterns, he wants to deconstruct the ‘gay voice’ and figure out where the hell it comes from. His endlessly-entertaining search takes him to speech therapists, linguists, and veterans of the Gay Rights Movement. This hilarious peek into the gay psyche proves that identity and voice are inseparable, regardless of your sexual orientation.
Thorpe is the perfect guide for such a circuitous journey. He engages with his wit and sarcasm, yet remains completely serious about his inquiry. Coming on the heels of a bad break-up with his lover, 40-something Thorpe is adrift and vulnerable. “I feel out of synch with my voice,” he confesses. In fact, he finds a gay man...

Of the many stereotypes used to "identify" gay men, one of the most common is "sounding gay." To put what that means into words would be silly and reductive, but for David Thorpe, the sound of his voice meshes with preconceived notions of his identity and sexuality, and he channels his concerns into the documentary "Do I Sound Gay?" Read More: 'To Be Takei' Explores the Personal And Political Side Of The 'Star Trek' Icon Featuring David Sedaris, Dan Savage, Margaret Cho, George Takei and Don Lemon, the doc follows Thorpe who after a breakup with his boyfriend consults with acting coaches, linguists, friends, family, total strangers and celebrities to get the bottom of his feelings about his voice. In this clip, he learns about the modulations of his speaking tone. "Do I Sound Gay?" is now playing in limited release and is available on VOD.

Writer David Sedaris has been with his partner Hugh Hamrick for well over two decades, but he admits, "Hugh does not sound like anything I wanted my fantasy boyfriend to sound like." In Do I Sound Gay? documentarian David Thorpe explores the relationship gay men have with their voices and, consequently, one another. Thorpe is feeling insecure about his voice after a breakup leaves him low, which leads him to interview speech pathologists and gay celebrities, as he does in this exclusive clip featuring David and Hugh. Spoiler alert: Even though Hugh might not have the gruff baritone of a lumberjack, David Sedaris is never going to leave him.

This is a reprint of our review from the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, and the primal impulses of humanity are revealed with chilling and ugly clarity in psychodrama “The Stanford Prison Experiment.” This year’s “Compliance”—aka the confrontational, abrasive picture at Sundance that polarizes audiences to the point of inspiring screaming matches—‘Stanford’ is even more provocative, as well as more accomplished and thought-provoking. Director Kyle Patrick Alvarez take a quantum leap into left field (his last film was the David Sedaris comic adaptation “C.O.G.”) with this examination of a disturbing true story. In 1971, psychologist Dr. Philip Zimbardo (Billy Crudup) begins the Stanford prison experiment,a landmark study of psychological incarceration examining the effects of authority, power and control as they apply to basic human behavior. With the assistance of his colleagues (James Wolk, Gaius Charles, Matt Bennett) and a real-life San...

Wracked with insecurity following a breakup in his 40s, journalist and first-time director David Thorpe set out to tackle the question of whether he sounded "too gay," speaking with many other gay men along the way about their own distinctive voices. The documentary, aptly titled "Do I Sound Gay?" played last weekend at the Dallas International Film Festival and opens July 10 in select theaters. Thorpe meets with speech pathologists, talks with friends and men off the street and interviews famous gay icons like Dan Savage, David Sedaris, Tim Gunn, Margaret Cho, Don Lemon and George Takei to about their struggles with sexuality, identity and the way their voices sound. The true story of a man and his family dealing with their parents’ serious illnesses might not sound like feel-good entertainment. But Dan Marshall’s upcoming memoir Home Is Burning is drawing favourable comparisons to Dave Eggers and David Sedaris, so it makes sense that New Line would snap up the rights, and snag Jonathan Levine to direct and Miles Teller as a potential star. Home Is Burning recounts how Marshall and his four siblings joined forces to help their mother deal with a cancer relapse as their father struggled with Als. Marshall, a recent college graduate at the time, even moved back into their basement from Los Angeles to provide care, setting up Team Terminal to battle the illnesses while still occasionally warring with his siblings. It feels like natural territory for Levine in particular, who brought Will Reiser’s fight with cancer to life to great comic effect in 50/50. USA, 2015
Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s The Stanford Prison Experiment is a darkly comedic dramatization of a frightening real life experiment conducted in 1971 by Dr. Phillip Zimbardo. It spun wildly out of control over the course of just 5 days. Two dozen Ivy league men are drawn to the experiment for money. Screened for good mental health and randomly assigned positions as guards or prisoners, conformity is set to be examined under the the microscope in the basement of prestigious Stanford. The experiment starts out informally as they are given uniforms and plopped into their cells and guard rooms. It soon spirals into degrading mental abuse and physical deprivation. That this happened is not in question but how systematic torture ensued couldn’t have been anticipated.
