After starring alongside Will Smith in one of the summer’s biggest blockbusters, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Martin Lawrence is ready to the spotlight with another of his classic characters to give fans of his comedy stylings a shot of nostalgia. Prepare yourselves for a Martin prequel series! Say it with me. Damn, Gina!
Young Martin is an hour-long drama series from Martin Lawrence through his production company RunTelDat and Marvin Peart’s WonderHill Studios. According to Deadline, Young Martin is a “contemporary origin story centering on Martin Payne, a charismatic teenager navigating the complexities of transitioning from youth to adulthood. Less than a year after announcing dual leadership at the production and distribution venture WonderHill Studios, veteran producers Bob Yari and Marvin Peart are parting ways.
The pair will disband as co-CEOs of the company, though Yari will remain an investor. The split is amicable, individuals familiar with the company said, and the men feel more comfortable moving forward with their own distinct visions. Peart will stay on as WonderHill CEO and oversee day-to-day operations moving forward.
Yari has formed a new production and releasing engine called Magenta Light Studios. His goal is to release three to five films per year in theaters. Both companies are presently active in the acquisitions space, a market perpetually in need of independent players that can compete with streaming giants and legacy studios.
Yari is best known for producing the 2004 drama “Crash,” which took the Academy Award for best picture. His credits include early-aughts...

Updated, 10:15 Am: 101 Studios is moving The War with Grandpa to Oct. 9. The Robert De Niro family comedy moves off the Sept. 18 weekend, where it was against Disney/20th Century Studios’ The King’s Man and to a weekend where there aren’t any wide releases. Given how movie theaters are reopening with auditorium capacity restrictions, few titles will be occupying the majority space of a multiplex in the near future. Exclusive: Ron Burkle’s Yucaipa Companies has filed suit against Lantern Capital today accusing the private equity firm of fraud, breach of contract and other charges in connection with the purchase of The Weinstein Company assets.
Looking for a wide range of damages, Yucaipa is claiming it shared confidential information with Lantern as the Dallas-based company positioned itself as the stalking horse bidder for TWC’s assets. Now, Burkle’s side says Lantern is refusing to pay a 2% transaction fee that was promised in exchange for its expertise.
“It appears that Lantern never intended to honor the oral agreement, but only fraudulently induced Yucaipa to enter into the oral agreement so that Lantern could use the confidential information to become the stalking horse bidder in the bankruptcy,” according to the jury trial seeking suit submitted Monday in L.A. Superior Court contends. (read it here)

Exclusive: The lead attorney in a class action lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein today voiced concern over allegations of fraud and racism leveled against the Dallas-based private equity firm poised to acquire The Weinstein Company.
Producer Marvin Peart hit Lantern Capital with a $110 million lawsuit Monday, claiming he was excluded from the deal after bringing Lantern to the negotiating table. “Institutional racism” is being cited as part of the reason for Peart, who is African American, being dumped by Lantern.
Cris Armenta, the national class-action counsel for the six women who filed a suit last December against Weinstein, on behalf of all women who found themselves on the disgraced movie producer’s “casting couch,” issued a statement to Deadline raising concerns about the allegations in the Lantern suit.
“We wish this deal would go to close for the benefit of all the unsecured creditors. However, I have always been suspicious about...

The already-troubled acquisition of The Weinstein Co. and its assets by private equity firm Lantern Capital is facing another bump in the road: a $110 million lawsuit.
In a suit filed against Lantern on Monday, Marvin Peart, an executive producer on TWC’s “Mob Wives,” says that he helped orchestrate the deal for Lantern to buy TWC, for which he says Lantern agreed to pay him $10.5 million, and give him a seat on the new TWC board of directors. Peart says that Lantern reneged on its agreement with him after the deal was reached, and that it did so in part because he is African-American.
His lawsuit accuses the Dallas-based firm of breach of contract, fraud, misrepresentation and institutional racism.

John Travolta was sporting a beard reminiscent of Brad Pitt's disastrous 2010 decorative facial hair as he filmed scenes for his latest movie Life on the Line.
Travolta plays an eccentric powerline technician called Beau whose dangerous high-wire job causes friction within his family life, before he and his fellow linemen are hit by the arrival of a massive storm.
He stars alongside Kate Bosworth and Final Destination star Devin Sawa.
The action drama is being directed by David Hackl and produced by Marro Films and Elite Film Productions, with Marro CEO Marvin Peart explaining: "The last film made in and around the lineman industry was in 1937, Slim the Lineman, and starred Henry Fonda.
"It's an honour and a career highlight to tell this modern-day story about these unsung heroes."
The 60-year-old actor was pictured on set sporting not one but two ponytails, in both his hair and impressively long black beard.

The Perfect Holiday
If This Christmas served up a crowd-pleasing portion of yuletide Soul Food, then The Perfect Holiday offers dried-out leftovers.
The sentiments of the season ring awfully hollow in this uninspired urban comedy, even with the likes of Queen Latifah, Terrence Howard, Gabrielle Union, Morris Chestnut and Charles Murphy among the ensemble.
Even if it had been better, this stale sophomore effort from filmmaker Lance Rivera (The Cookout) would be facing a considerable challenge at the ticket counters, seeing as it's catering to the same audience so recently sated by This Christmas, not to mention the fact that it's opening the same week as I Am Legend, starring Mr. Boxoffice himself, Will Smith.
Meet Benjamin (Chestnut), a struggling songwriter working as an outlet-mall Santa, accompanied by his pal/oversized elf, Jamal (Faizon Love).
Meet Nancy (Union), the romance-starved, divorced mother of three young children whose ex is a pompous boob of a rapper-producer called J-Jizzy (Murphy).
It's clear that Benjamin and Nancy were meant to be together (this is, after all, something like the fourth time Chestnut and Union have shared the screen), even if her eldest son, John-John (Malik Hammond), does what he can to discourage the liaison.
Meanwhile, Latifah and Howard occasionally pop in and out as an angel/devil duo, though it often seems like they're not in the same film, or at least not on the same shooting days as the rest of the cast.
There's not a single scene in Holiday that doesn't feel like it was copied from any number of other cookie-cutter rom coms, Christmas-themed or otherwise, nor are there any moments in the script -- penned by Rivera and Marc E. Calixte -- that would qualify as genuinely heartwarming, believable or remotely funny.
Even with the easy-on-the-eyes presence of Union and Chestnut, as well as the normally amusing Murphy (as demonstrated on "Chappelle's Show") and Katt Williams as Murphy's long-suffering assistant, this shot-in-New Jersey production feels about as inviting as warm eggnog.

Who's Your Caddy?
NEW YORK -- Jeffrey Jones must have some really bad karma from a past life. The talented character has long made a specialty out of being abused on film, as typified by his iconic performance as the aggrieved principal in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." His streak continues with this urban variation of Caddyshack, in which he plays the snooty head of an exclusive private golf club. Whether being kicked in the groin, tackled by a flying obese man, having his car blown up or getting his face buried in doggie doo, Jones handles it with his usual slow burn. Who's Your Caddy? opened Friday without being screened in advance for the press.
The bare-bones plot revolves around the efforts of C-Note (Antwan Big Boi Patton, half of the R&B duo OutKast), a highly successful rap impresario, to join the ranks of the Carolina Pines Country Club. Naturally, its snobbish president Cummings (Jones) will have none of it, especially since the club is bidding to become the home of the next U.S. Open.
That doesn't stop the intrepid C-Note, who has a highly personal reason, not explained until late in the film, for his desire to join. He promptly buys a mansion adjoining the course, essentially blackmailing his way into the club via such tactics as filming his latest rap video with its scantily clad ladies in full view of the golfers.
It isn't long before he and his posse wreak havoc with the staid environment, packing heat and riding around in a tricked-up, Hummer golf cart. Cummings hires a beautiful black lawyer to help him oust the interlopers, not counting on her becoming attracted to the dashing rapper.
The film is strictly formulaic with its vulgar humor, managing to stereotype blacks, whites, gays and even little people to boot. Both a grudge-match polo game and the inevitable climactic round on the links register with little impact, and most of the film's humor is generated, literally out of his ass, by the big-boned Faizon Love as C-Note's particularly flatulent sidekick.
Garrett Morris has a cameo as a Johnnie Cochran-like lawyer, and hot rapper Lil Wayne shows up briefly as well. Patton has a subdued but likable screen presence, and Jenifer Lewis has nice moments as C-Note's no-nonsense mom. But ultimately this is utterly forgettable stuff, not even managing to fulfill its mandate of mindless summer fun.
