Shut In is, as I’m sure you’re aware, the new film from Ben Shapiro and his website The Daily Wire. I was initially impressed by the reviews it was getting. Then I noticed how many of them were from sites that, even if they didn’t call themselves conservative, right wing, or even political, had a very obvious point of view. Comments about “beta males”, Hollywood’s “liberal agenda” and complaints about “woke culture” abounded. So, as with their previous. film, Run Hide Fight, I decided to watch it and see if it was a decent thriller or propaganda.
Jessica is a former meth addict struggling to stay straight and raise her two young children. She also wants to sell the house her grandmother left her, move away and start over.

The Daily Wire wants to make conservative movies to take on liberal Hollywood, which might sound like a lost cause from the start. But today it’s releasing a movie based on a Black List screenplay with a compelling genre hook that almost looks commercial — and just happens to sneak conservative values into the heart of its story.
The right-wing publication sells Leftist Tears travel mugs and hosts a podcaster who believes doctors who perform gender-affirmation surgeries are “treating kids like Frankenstein’s monster.” However, it might be able to succeed where Dinesh D’Souza, Steve Bannon, and other conservative filmmakers failed: Adapt a red-state approach to movies that sublimates politics into the story rather than turning it into obvious propaganda.
Today the site premieres its first original feature, “Shut In,” a thriller from “Disturbia” director DJ Caruso. Rainey Qualley stars as a single mother who, after being locked in her...

Exclusive: Conservative media site The Daily Wire has taken the unusual step of launching its first original movie, Shut In, for free on YouTube.
The Black List and BloodList thriller, directed by xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage and Disturbia director D.J. Caruso, will debut on YouTube on the evening of February 10. The stream will only available in the U.S. During the screening, The Daily Wire will also show a first look teaser trailer for its Gina Carano western Terror On The Prairie, and reveal a new movie project it is working on. While ad-supported free movie launches are becoming more popular as the distribution ecosystem evolves, this launch is not ad supported, we are told, but is more of a marketing play. The initial plan was to debut the film for Daily Wire subscribers, but the site’s subs will now get an exclusive window to see the...

Cult and controversial actor-director Vincent Gallo is returning to acting after a near decade-long absence from features.
Quietly, Gallo took on one of the lead roles in D.J. Caruso’s movie thriller Shut In, which is the first original movie from conservative media outlet-turned film producer The Daily Wire, which just revealed the casting.
The project marks Gallo’s first feature acting role since 2013 film The Human Trust. The actor-filmmaker, now 60, is best known for directing controversial indie movie The Brown Bunny (2003) with Chloe Sevigny and Christina Ricci starrer Buffalo 66 (1998). Gallo is also known for making incendiary and provocative comments. His website — described by The Daily Wire as “satirical” — has come under fire for discriminatory passages. As an avowed Trump fan and a political conservative,...

James Bobin is in talks to direct Clue, the live-action feature adaptation of the Hasbro board game in the works at 20th Century Studios with Ryan Reynolds aboard. The Disney-run studio had previously been in talks with Jason Bateman to direct and act in the movie, but that is no longer the case.
Reynolds remains attached to Clue via his Maximum Effort production company, which is developing and producing with Hasbro’s film division Allspark Pictures. It also remains a possible starring vehicle for him.
Reynolds made a three-year producing deal at then-20th Century Fox in early 2019 off the success of the two Deadpool movies. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote the first Deadpool film, penned the script for Clue.

The 15th annual Black List survey was revealed Monday December 16, and it includes 66 un-produced screenplays from up-and-coming literary talent. Results were pooled from a survey of more than 250 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2019 and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List.
Since 2005, more than a third of the screenplays included in the annual Black List surveys have become produced films, and often to notoriety — such as “Argo,” “American Hustle,” “Juno,” “The King’s Speech,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Spotlight,” “The Revenants,” “The Descendants,” and “Hell or High Water.” Melina Matsoukas’s 2019 film “Queen & Slim,” written by Lena Waithe with a story co-authored by James Frey, was featured on the 2018 Black List.

Exclusive: Fresh from winning the Emmy for Outstanding Directing For A Drama Series for Ozark, Jason Bateman has found his next feature film to direct. He’ll helm Shut In, the spec script by first time scribe Melanie Toast that New Line acquired in September.
Bateman had been developing to direct a film based on the Hasbro board game Clue, teaming with Ryan Reynolds at Fox/Disney. That project is still alive, but it would have been too much for Bateman to get it done and get back to his Netflix series. Then he found Shut In, a contained thriller he fell for quickly, and one that is a better fit for his schedule. They’re negotiating, but sources said that the film is on course for a production start in the first quarter of 2020.

“A single mother is held captive by her violent ex, and her two young children are left at risk. She must do everything to protect them and survive.”
The film will be produced by Dan Farah from Farah Films, Roy Lee at Vertigo, and Dallas Sonnier at Cinestate. Sonnier purchased the script from the Black List of scripts and was first prepared to finance the film independently until the script began gaining traction with Sonnier’s friend and fellow producer, Farah, who signed on to manage Toast and co-produce Shut In.
This sounds like it has potential to be an interesting film. What do you think?...

Exclusive: New Line Cinema has won an auction for Shut In, a spec script by first-time scribe Melanie Toast. Producing are Farah Films’ Dan Farah, Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Cinestate’s Dallas Sonnier.
The spec is an edgy thriller that will follow a fast track toward production. A single mother is held captive by her violent ex, and her two young children are left at risk. She must do everything to protect them and survive.
Toast lives in a small Texas town with her husband and children, and her script was first discovered by Sonnier on The Black List website. He purchased the script with the intention to quickly self-finance the film as an indie, and he introduced Toast to Farah, who signed her as manager, and UTA.
Sonnier and Farah first met as college interns for Scott Rudin, and knew each other while Sonnier worked at UTA and Farah at ICM,...

Exclusive: Miramax has acquired screen rights to the Erica Ferencik novel The River At Night. The project will be shaped by Kevin Williamson and Eli Roth, teaming for the first time after each had an illustrious genre past with the original Miramax. Williamson and Ben Fast will produce through their Outerbanks banner and Roth is producing with Roger Birnbaum. Roth is eyeing this as a potential directing project. Melanie Toast is in talks to write. She burst onto the scene with her first script Shut In, a contained thriller that is in serious play.
For Roth and Birnbaum, this marks the first project for The Arts District, their new production label that has been staked to a first-look deal by Miramax chief Bill Block. Michael Besman is the company’s head of development. Williamson and Fast already tethered Outerbanks to Miramax for movies.
