The Emmy-winning actress (The Practice) talks about the episode and her adventures with Asl (American Sign Language). Talk about this special episode and working with Caverly. These days, legacy can be a burden for television. Whether it’s the legacy of a beloved property poised to be bastardized via reboot, the legacy of a network or star, the legacy of a brilliant debut now hinging upon equal or better subsequent installment, there are legacies intertwined in too many new shows, hanging in the balance as studios and streamers churn out new stories.
But legacy doesn’t matter so much to Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox) the lead of Marion Dayre’s “Echo,” now streaming in full on Disney+. Whether it’s her family, her employer, or the stories passed down to her as a child, Maya is more interested in forging her own path than appeasing various players around her. Like “Echo” itself, she stands alone and stands tall — distinct and imposing compared to any imitation.

Last year, Nathan Lane won his first Primetime Emmy Award for his guest-starring role as Teddy Dimas in the first season of the Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building.” After Teddy and his son Theo (James Caverly) landed in prison at the end of last season, Lane’s character returns to the Arconia apartment building where the series is set and unknowingly sparks trouble as his former friend Oliver (Emmy nominee Martin Short) questions the paternity of his son Will (Ryan Broussard). For his consequential return, Lane has earned another bid in the Best Comedy Guest Actor category and looks to defend his title.
Only one of last year’s contenders is back with him, namely, Sam Richardson for “Ted Lasso.” The rest of the category is rounded out by first-time nominees, past nominees and a returning champ. “The Bear” scored two bids for Jon Bernthal, his first, and Oliver Platt,...

This article contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building season 3.
As with every season of Only Murders in the Building thus far, just as one murder gets solved by the sleuthing trio, another person gets killed. In the season 3 finale, Ben Gilroy’s (Paul Rudd) killer is caught and Mabel (Selena Gomez), Oliver (Martin Short), and Charles (Steve Martin) not only get to celebrate the opening night of Death Rattle Dazzle, but also another case successfully closed. However, the celebration doesn’t last long as Charles’ longtime colleague and stunt double Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch) is shot through the window of his apartment.
But the death of Sazz isn’t the only mystery left to be solved by season 4, which writing is set to start on soon, now that the AMPTP has finally agreed to the WGA’s fair terms. Here are the big questions we have after the season 3 finale.

“Only Murders in the Building” Season 3 has arrived, backed by several powerful new stars including Meryl Streep, Paul Rudd, Ashley Park and Jesse Williams. Rudd’s character Ben Glenroy first appeared in the Season 2 finale, suggesting he will be the murder victim for the third season of the Hulu comedy show when he collapsed on stage in the final minutes of last season.
You’d think on their third murder mystery, viewers would know the drill of unlikely trio Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) as they slowly but surely piece together the clues, but last season’s combination of solved case followed by new case may have confused some.
Don’t worry, we’ve got a brief recap of what happened in Season 2 that will be helpful to refresh memories for Season 3. Here’s our “Only Murders in the Building” Season 2 recap.

This article contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building seasons 1 and 2.
The faith that Hulu and its parent company Disney display in Only Murders in the Building has been a refreshing change of pace considering how easily other streaming shows have been, well… murdered in recent years.
The extravagant comedic mystery, grounded by legends old (Steve Martin and Martin Short) and new (Selena Gomez) has been an amazing ride for two seasons, full of fun, danger, intrigue, and humor that has made it one of the most binge-worthy series this decade. The only thing audiences look forward to more than a new season is going back and rewatching the previous season after learning the truth. Like discovering an old 20 dollar bill in your pocket you thought long lost, the rewatchability factor of Only Murders is the little secret you thought was dead and gone, only to pop up and reward you once more.

Deaf representation has come a long way in Hollywood.
“Coda’s” release and subsequent best picture Oscar win marked an important moment for deaf audiences. It showed the most significant representation of the community on a global stage since 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God” earned Marlee Matlin a best actress prize.
“Hollywood is making that shift from diversity for optics to something deeper,” says Lauren Ridloff, a deaf actor best known for her work on “Eternals” and “The Walking Dead.”
That deeper shift includes recent projects where deaf representation has been the focus of major storylines. Director James Cameron called on C.J Jones to create Na’vi sign language, featured in “Avatar: The Way of Water.” HBO’s “The Last of Us” offered up another landmark moment when the show about a post-apocalyptic world featured Keivonn Woodard, as a young deaf Black man trying to survive zombie hordes. It seemed impossible at the outset, but the second season of Hulu’s comedic murder mystery “Only Murders in the Building” is just as good and funny as the first. Much of that is due to the show’s writers, who continue to find new ways to play with the true crime genre and viewers’ obsession with it. But just as much is owed to the show’s uber-talented cast, which is anchored by the trio of Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez.
Last year, both Short and Martin snagged nominations for Best TV Comedy Actor at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards for their performances. It seemed possible that Gomez, who effortlessly nails the deadpan, straight woman routine opposite the two comedy legends, might sneak into the comedy actress races as well. Ultimately, it didn’t happen, but we’re not ready to write off the...

As Gold Derby predicted, Nathan Lane finally broke his streak of five Best Comedy Guest Actor Emmy losses by taking the gold for “Only Murders in the Building” at the 2022 Creative Arts ceremony. Upon receiving this nomination in July, he became the sole record holder for most bids in the category after having previously shared the distinction with the late Fred Willard. His past notices came for comedic appearances on “Frasier” (1995), “Mad About You” (1998) and “Modern Family”.
Those who were bested by Lane in this contest were Jerrod Carmichael (“Saturday Night Live”), Bill Hader (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), James Lance (“Ted Lasso”), Christopher McDonald (“Hacks”) and Sam Richardson (“Ted Lasso”). All are Emmy newcomers except Hader, who has amassed 25 nominations since 2009, including two others in this category for “Saturday Night Live”. This year, his work on the comedy series “Barry” has also brought him lead acting, producing, directing and writing bids.

Seven proved to be lucky indeed for stage, screen and TV vet Nathan Lane, who at long last won an Emmy at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 4 for his turn as a food magnate embroiled in a murder mystery with his deaf son (James Caverly) in Hulu’s series “Only Murders in the Building.”
The three-time Tony-winning actor, best known for his memorable roles in films like “The Birdcage” and “Mouse Hunt,” as well as series such as “American Crime Story” and “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” became the most nominated guest actor in history this year. [The following story contains spoilers from the season two finale of Only Murders in the Building.]
Only Murders in the Building showrunner John Hoffman doesn’t have a five-season plan.
In fact, he envies writers who know exactly how long they want their series to run and where they want their characters to end up. For Hoffman, each season is a brand new journey, and he’s excited to keep the show going for as long as Hulu — and his stars — will have him.
“I think there’s great variety [in terms of the stories that can be told],” Hoffman tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I know there have been funny discussions about how many murders can there be in one building, but I think that’s a fun challenge.”
Only Murders season two followed Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez) and Oliver (Martin Short) as they try to get to the bottom of who killed Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell) in the season one finale.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not seen “I Know Who Did It,” the Season 2 finale of “Only Murders in the Building.”
The Season 2 finale of “Only Murders in the Building” steps out of the building … and into the theater.
Season 2 sees true crime enthusiasts-turned-podcasters Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) investigate the murder of Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell) while trying to clear their own names, as the entire city of New York is confident that they’re the culprits.
Charles, Oliver and Mabel identify suspects aplenty. There’s Alice (Cara Delevigne), an artist whose romantic interest in Mabel devolves into an obsession with Mabel’s traumatic past. There’s Detective Kreps (Michael Rapaport), who’s just a little too excited to put the trio behind bars and accidentally reveals his mysterious ties to Bunny’s case after a run-in with a glitter bomb.

When I was offered the opportunity to direct the “Only Murders in the Building” episode “The Boy From 6B,” which focuses on the story of a deaf character, I knew instantly that I had to do it. It was precisely the kind of story that excites me, a story told from a point of view we rarely get to see, portraying a character from a community that’s underrepresented and misrepresented. I’ve built my career upon telling stories about marginalized communities, and by doing so, I’ve attempted to push us all out of the margins and into the center. Why? Because I know all too well the pain of misrepresentation.

This story about Nathan Lane and “Only Murders in the Building” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy issue of TheWrap magazine.
Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” ended up with a considerable nomination haul on July 12, with 17 nods in total — and one of them quietly made history. That nom went to Nathan Lane, a three-time Tony winner for both plays and musicals with an equally considerable film and TV résumé to call his own, including celebrated turns in “The Birdcage” and “The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.” Lane’s nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series marked his sixth in the category, a record that surpasses the late Fred Willard’s five career nods.
It’s also Lane’s seventh overall for his TV work, which includes a drama-series guest nomination for “The Good Wife” several years back. “It’s lovely...

With two episodes left of the second season of Hulu’s mystery romp “Only Murders in the Building,” the series is an undeniable hit on the streaming platform. Nominated for 17 Emmy Awards for its first season, this season’s final two episodes (titled “Sparring Partners” and “I Know Who Did It”) will be released while voting is underway by the TV Academy, a tactic that helped one of its competitors, “Ted Lasso” from Apple TV+, last year when it won for its inaugural season.
Variety Awards Circuit has revealed the updated predictions for which shows and performers could triumph in September. The John Hoffman and Steve Martin-created mystery is projected to walk away with nine statuettes. If accurate, “Only Murders in the Building” would break the record for most Emmy wins for a comedy series in its first season. Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” currently holds...

When Emmy nominations were announced a few weeks ago, it was wonderful to see “Only Murders in the Building” nab three: one for Outstanding Comedy Series and two for its lead actors. Yes, actors. Don’t get me wrong, Martin Short and Steve Martin do fantastic work in the Hulu series’ debut season, but to not nominate the lone woman in the trinity, Selena Gomez as Mabel Mora, is weird. Part of what made Season 1 work was Mabel’s millennial cynicism in the face of Oliver’s (Martin Short) chronic wanderlust and Charles’ (Steve Martin) desire to be left alone. Mabel balanced everyone out.
Regardless of awards, Gomez brought Mabel into a new world with Season 2. Mabel doesn’t really know who she is and that derisive armor is starting to crack. Gomez still plays the character as tough and perceptive, but Mabel’s also still grieving a lot of the demons in her life,...

For Only Murders in the Building, composer Siddhartha Khosla focused on underscoring the dramatic beats of the murder mystery rather than the comedy. The series follows a trio of true crime fans in NYC who start a podcast when they find themselves embroiled in their own mystery. In an effort to give it a more “NYC” feeling, he incorporated bucket drumming into the orchestra. Using those same instruments for the bulk of the score, Khosla’s work became essential in “The Boy From 6B”, which follows the perspective of the deaf character Theo Dimas (James Caverly). Only Murders in the Building is nominated for 17 Emmys in its first season, including Outstanding Comedy Series and two nominations for Khosla for his score and the main title theme.

Siddhartha Khosla has a hat trick of Emmy nominations this year, two of which are for “Only Murders in the Building,” for composing the addictive theme and the show’s score. For the latter category, he submitted “The Boy from 6B,” the standout Season 1 episode told from the perspective of Theo (James Caverly), who’s deaf, with no dialogue until one sentence at the end. And at one point in the process, there was going to be no music in the episode either.
“Julie Monroe, our editor was key in this. Cherien Dabis, who directed the episode — key. We all work together very early on in terms of finding what it was,” Khosla tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Composers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “At one point, there was gonna be no music. One of last season’s best episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” was “The Boy From 6B.” Said boy was Theo Dimas (James Caverly), the Deaf son of podcast sponsor and dip entrepreneur Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane). Theo moved through the bustling world of New York not only as a deaf man, but a man with a secret. Told like a silent movie, “The Boy From 6B” was heartfelt and incredibly authentic, especially if one is a Deaf or disabled person living with parents who aren’t. Teddy and Theo’s relationship is fraught, both with their own personal demons, but also an unspoken fear of disappointing the other.
We haven’t seen the Dimases much in Season 2 but this week’s episode “Flipping the Pieces” brings Theo Dimas back to the fold, pairing him up with Mabel (Selena Gomez) as everyone continues to look for Bunny’s killer.

Spoiler Warning: Proceed at your own risk if you haven’t watched “Only Murders in the Building” Season 2, Episode 7 — “Flipping the Pieces.”
In many ways, “Only Murders in the Building” is centered around Mabel Mora’s (Selena Gomez) proximity to death and relationship with tragedy. The series begins with a shot of her and her bloodied white turtleneck framing a gruesome murder, circles back around to the death of her two friends Zoe and Tim Kono and doubles back again to the inaugural season’s opening scene.
For showrunner and co-creator John Hoffman, the character’s perseverance amid personal turmoil is what drives the show’s central tension, especially in Season 2, and helps color her budding friendships with Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short). In the second season’s seventh episode, this is all laid bare: Viewers finally unlock Mabel’s motivations and past traumas in tandem with her,...

The seventh episode of the first season of "Only Murders in the Building," "The Boy from 6B", was a true standout. You may recall it well enough if you're a fan of the Hulu crime comedy series: the installment was almost entirely free of spoken dialogue, as it primarily was presented from the perspective of Theo Dimas (James Caverly), the deaf son of deli king Teddy Dimas (Nathan Lane). Theo's connection to Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) and her friends was fraught and darker than anyone could have realized, and it's no surprise that the excellent episode was nominated for Emmys in...

The metaphorical puzzle gets flipped, and Mabel starts to see things clearly.
Only Murders In the Building Season 2 Episode 7 focuses on so-called "Bloody Mabel" and has her spending time with a most unlikely ally -- Theo Dimas.
The puzzle theme has been a big part of the show's marketing, but now it comes into play in a real way.
Mabel's current puzzle is symbolic -- the mystery of Bunny's death -- but she loved solving puzzles with her father. Now, she solves mysteries, a type of puzzle, with her two new father figures.
Again, fatherhood plays a considerable role in these characters' lives. It was true in Only Murders in the Building Season 1 and is even truer in Only Murders in the Building Season 2.
It was a nice parallel to bring Theo back in "Flipping the Pieces," the seventh episode in the premier season, since he featured centrally in Only...

Only Murders in the Building Season 2 Episode 7
While Charles and Oliver (Steve Martin and Martin Short) bring legendary comedic chops to Only Murders in the Building, it’s Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez) who casts an ominous and mysterious spell over the audience. For nearly two seasons she’s been at the center of two murder investigations, perhaps because she has ties to a lot of morally ambiguous people. Her past has been largely left up to interpretation until now, but this week we finally get to take a peek at some of the trauma that haunts the show’s female lead.
It figures we would get a “Mabel episode” after what happened at the end of the previous one. Mabel stabs the glitter-covered man who may or may not be Bunny’s killer on a subway with a knitting needle, an...

For the seventh time in his long career, Nathan Lane will be trying to win his first ever Primetime Emmy Award. Lane is nominated in the Best Comedy Guest Actor category for his stint as Teddy Dimas on the first season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”
Lane’s submission is “The Boy from 6B,” in which Lane, like most of the other characters in the episode, has no audible dialogue and primarily sees Lane communicating using American Sign Language. The episode opens in a flashback of Teddy telling his 10-year-old deaf son, Theo, that he wishes he could hear the soundtrack to the musical, “Carousel.” He tries to see if Theo can hear it through headphones with the volume turned up and presses the headphones against his head until he pulls back and apologizes.

Nathan Lane just made Primetime Emmy Awards history with his record sixth Best Comedy Guest Actor nomination, for “Only Murders in the Building, and now has a total of seven bids, but these marks just mean one thing for the three-time Tony winner. “I’m old,” Lane deadpanned to Gold Derby (watch above). “It means I’ve gotten very old, older than I’ve ever wanted to be. It’s a lovely thing. I mean, it sounds impressive until you actually realize I haven’t actually won. But it’s nice to be invited to the party and be part of the conversation for sure. It has a lot to do with the quality of the show, of ‘Only Murders in the Building.'”

Editor’s Note: This article will discuss spoilers for the first six episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” Season 2.
The arrival of “Only Murders in the Building” Episode 6 brings us over halfway through the season. And while there are three more episodes to make an argument for a killer, odds are you have your theories. Like last season, some characters seem like obvious red herrings (Alice?). Maybe it’s a character we’ve known for years, like cat-lover Howard Morris. It can’t be Amy Schumer playing herself, could it?
Let’s look back at the season so far and see where we stand on who killed Arconia owner Bunny Folger.
1. Alice

Only Murders in the Building guest star Nathan Lane set an Emmy record this morning as he landed his seventh nomination, becoming the most-nominated guest actor, across comedy and drama categories, in the history of television. The three-time Tony winner’s nom, in the category of Comedy Guest Actor, follows three for Modern Family, and one apiece for roles on Mad About You and Frasier, along with a sole Drama Guest Actor nom for The Good Wife. When Deadline caught up with the actor this morning to discuss the recognition, he teased where his Only Murders character Teddy Dimas is headed, at the same time revealing new details about a pair of anticipated A24 films in which he stars: Ari Aster’s horror Disappointment Blvd. and Larry Charles’ comedy F***ing Identical Twins.

The glass is half-full in the Emmy diversity landscape. At least that’s what we can tell ourselves with this year’s Primetime nominations.

In a category often lacking in diversity, this year’s Emmy nominations for Outstanding Directing saw near gender parity, with almost half of those recognized being women. Some of the notable nods include female-helmed episodes of “Only Murders in the Building,” “Hacks” and “Succession.”
Palestinian American actress-director Cherien Dabis directed the critically lauded episode “The Boy From 6B” for “Only Murders,” which was depicted entirely from the perspective of Theo (James Caverly), a deaf character.
“I’m speechless!” Dabis said in a statement. “Which I guess is appropriate because I’ve been nominated for a silent episode! Seriously though, I’m beyond thrilled. This is particularly special because this episode is so unique, inventive and ambitious. I’m incredibly grateful to the writers and show-runner / co-creator John Hoffman and Hulu for boldly taking a risk on a dialogue-free episode of a half hour comedy and for inviting me on to do such meaningful work.

Only Murders in the Building Season 2 Episode 3
Perspective is one of the most important factors in how we tell stories. Watching The Sopranos or Breaking Bad from the perspective of the side characters instead of Tony Soprano or Walter White would have made each of these shows take on an entirely different meaning. These anti-heroes would have become villains, and antagonists come to be seen in a contrary light.
Only Murders in the Building understands that perspective is especially important to its storytelling. Theo Dimas (James Caverly) got an episode told through his eyes in the first season, a high point for the show that gave the audience a way for a deaf character to shed some light on the murder investigation. Theo ended up being only a small part of the mystery’s final outcome, but it was a brilliant...

The Hulu comedy from Steve Martin and John Hoffman about a trio of strangers living in an extravagant Upper West Side apartment building who come together to solve a murder and start a podcast following their investigation is one of the funniest shows currently on TV. It’s also packed with an absurd level of talent. In addition to Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, the true crime parody features excellent guest and supporting performances from the likes of Nathan Lane, Jane Lynch and Amy Ryan. Of the three, though, it’s Lane who’s seeking Emmy history.
A three-time Tony winner, Lane has yet to win a Primetime Emmy (he is the recipient of two Daytime Emmy Awards). However, it’s not for lack of recognition. He has been nominated for Best Comedy Guest Actor five times and Best Drama Guest Actor once.

“The truth is that people don’t want to spend their commutes hearing about run-of-the-mill tragedies,” superstar podcast host Cinda Canning (Tina Fey) sneers at our central trio in the second season of Only Murders in the Building. What they do want to hear, she insists, are tantalizing stories of missing girls and murderous beauties. She’s not necessarily wrong, if TV’s true-crime boom is any indication. And Only Murders in the Building knows it too, as a series centered around a homicide.
As in season one, though, what elevates Only Murders in the Building beyond a run-of-the-mill crime drama is that it does care about those run-of-the-mill tragedies. The new volume delivers another juicy mystery, bursting with gasp-worthy twists and giggle-worthy jokes. But it’s threaded with a humane curiosity about the unremarkable loneliness of an old woman living alone, or...

Last August Hulu released the first season of “Only Murders in the Building,” a whodunit that blended old-school detective storytelling with fresh characters expertly played by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. The first season had a lot to recommend. The camaraderie between the trio of leads was infectious, with each individualizing themselves so well that viewers could be a Mab-iac or a Putnut depending on which character one loved the most. It also had some incredibly sharp writing that led to a bevy of one-liners, not to mention one of the best episodes of television of the year (“The Boy From 6B”).
With Season 2 set to arrive at the end of this month it’s time for a quick refresher on what happened last season. Who was at the heart of the central mystery? And was the Arconia murderer ever caught? We have you covered as we answer...

In an upcoming episode of the Hulu comedy Only Murders in the Building, Charles (Steve Martin) is pleased with how much better he and fellow true-crime podcast fans Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) have gotten at maneuvering through a world of violence and mystery. Oliver agrees, saying, “You can tell this is our second season.”
It’s one of a plethora of self-aware jokes sprinkled throughout Only Murders‘ return. Its debut season told the story of Charles, Oliver, and Mabel launching their own podcast to investigate a neighbor...
