Last week, more than 400 TV creators and showrunners — all of them women — sent letters to top executives at Hollywood studios demanding that specific safety protocols be put in place for pregnant employees in states where abortion has been outlawed, or soon will be. Now, letters of support signed by 594 men — including J.J. Abrams, Jordan Peele, Greg Berlanti, Donald Glover, Aaron Sorkin, David E. Kelley, Taika Waititi and Ryan Murphy — have been sent to the same companies.
The text of the letter is short, simply saying the undersigned stand with their “female, trans & non-binary showrunner colleagues in demanding a response from our employers regarding the imminent crisis” at hand. It was delivered by replying-all to the first letter, and was sent to Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Paramount, Apple, NBC Universal, Amazon, Lionsgate and AMC.
These activist correspondences have been instigated by the Supreme Court’s June 24 Dobbs decison, which overturned Roe v.

The African American Film Critics Association has scrapped its planned in-person ceremony for the 3rd annual Aafca TV Honors, and will instead now take place as a virtual event. The shift was made in light of the recent rise in Covid-19 cases in both Southern California and around the country due to the delta strain of the pandemic.
Meanwhile, Aafca also announced on Monday that it would recognize legendary TV producer Norman Lear with the org’s Aafca TV Honors Legend Award. The virtual ceremony takes place on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 4 p.m. Pt. Yvette Nicole Brown will host the now-online affair, which had been previously slated for the California Yacht Club in Marina Del Rey, with a 50 percent audience capacity.
“Norman Lear’s work has made such a tremendous impact that creators still feed off of it till this day,” said Aafca co-founder and president Gil Robertson. “This award recognizes Mr.

Norman Lear celebrated the dawn of his second century on the planet by probably accomplishing more than you did in the past month. Not only did he gather with family and friends, but Lear also published an op-ed in The Washington Post, warning of the erosion of voting rights in America, and TBS sealed a deal to develop a new version of his iconic 1970s late-night soap “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.”
“How about that,” said Lear, on the phone from New York. “I can’t overstate how exciting I find that.”
Brent Miller, who runs Lear’s Act III production company, credited Sony for “for really pushing through in the way they have. To make sure that we could close that [TBS] deal right on his birthday was a nice gift.” The updated show is set to star Emily Hampshire (“Schitt’s Creek”) in the title role; Hampshire and Jacob Tierney (“Letterkenny”) are writing and executive producing.

Shonda Rhimes set another series at Netflix on Tuesday — her ninth since signing a mega-deal with the streaming service in 2017 — and for this one, she’s teaming up with fellow Hollywood legends including Norman Lear and Steve Martin.
The new show, called “Notes on Love,” is described as “an episodic anthology series that ranges across genres and explores the unexpected, life-changing, euphoric, hilarious, surreal, and all-consuming places where love intersects with our lives.”
According to Netflix, “each installment comes straight from the unique lens of a prolific creative.” That lineup currently includes episodes from Martin; Lear and his writing partner Aaron Shure; Diane Warren; Jenny Han; real-life married couple Lindy West and Ahamefule J. Oluo; and Rhimes. The creative teams behind other Season 1 episodes will be announced at a later date.

Lucky Louie, Season 1, Episode 10: “Confession”
Written by Mary Fitzgerald and Aaron Shure
Directed by Andrew D. Weyman
Aired on August 13th, 2006 on HBO
Maybe Lucky Louie has just been searching for the right material for its jokes. Over the past few weeks, these reviews have derided the show for being racist, misogynistic, homophobic, and using subjects such as rape and alcoholism for comedic material. For too much of the season, Lucky Louie has come across as a way for a white man to crack jokes at the expense of those less fortunate than him. In Louie, Louis C.K. reveals an overwhelming amount of empathy, but his earlier series often feels burdened by his failure to understand anyone’s perspective other than his own.

Lucky Louie, Season 1, Episode 2: “Kim’s O”
Written by Dan Mintz & Aaron Shure
Directed by Andrew D. Weyman
Aired on June 18, 2006 on HBO
Two episodes in, sexual politics have been a clear theme of Lucky Louie, and “Kim’s O” plays no small part in that. Like last week’s “Pilot,” the episode centers on the dysfunctional sexual relationship between Louie and Kim, and how it burdens their entire lives. But whereas “Pilot” suffered for being too focused on the boorishness of Louie and his friends (even if it mocked their perspective), “Kim’s O” succeeds by making her unhappiness the episode’s focal point, rather than depicting her as unfortunate (but comical) collateral damage.
It’s not like “Kim’s O” completely leaves the boorishness aside, although it’s used more sparingly and effectively here. It begins in the teaser, with Louie and Kim laughing at the loud,...

Exclusive: CBS’ late-night host Craig Ferguson has sold two comedy projects to the eye network through his Green Mountain West production company, which has been under an overall deal at CBS TV Studios since 2006. Both are with well known comedy writers: Friends alum Adam Chase and Everybody Loves Raymond veteran Aaron Shure. Ferguson will serve as an executive producer on the two multi-camera projects, with his producing partner Rebecca Tucker also expected to have a producing role. CBS TV Studios is the studio. The untitled Ferguson/Chase project, written and executive produced by Chase, revolves around a group of male friends in their early 30s who decide to defy convention and try to stay single as long as possible even though everyone they know is getting married and having kids. Wme-repped Chase recently worked with CBS and CBS Studios on last season’s How To Be A Gentleman. The untitled...

Before getting into the episode, we should bring into focus the recent news developments concerning The Office which seemed to replace an actual new episode last week. First and foremost, there’s the announcement that NBC is looking to launch its Dwight spin-off in spring of 2013. This would pick up where the ninth season of The Office leaves off – that is if there even is a ninth season. The other recent development is that Mindy Kaling (Kelly) has a deal in the works for her own live-action sitcom on Fox, not to be confused with the animated one which she would also be writing and starring in. Before getting into the episode, we should bring into focus the recent news developments concerning The Office which seemed to replace an actual new episode last week. First and foremost, there’s the announcement that NBC is looking to launch its Dwight spin-off in spring of 2013. Ray Romano has denied rumours that he is replacing Steve Carell on The Office. Romano will appear in the upcoming season finale but told Zap2It that he only has a "cameo". "It's real quick, a drive-by," he said. "One of the writers on the show, Aaron Shure, was on [Everybody Loves] Raymond. He called me at the house and asked if I would do it and I said, 'Yeah'. "As soon as I took it, though, I thought, 'Oh, I hope people don't think I'm going to take the place of Steve Carell. (more)...

Ray Romano wants to make it perfectly clear: He is not replacing Steve Carell on "The Office."
The star of the NBC workplace sitcom exits the show in a "super-sized" episode Thursday (April 28), and Romano will turn up in the May 19 season finale, along with James Spader ("Boston Legal") and British comedy star Catherine Tate. However, the former staple of "Everybody Loves Raymond" and current writer-actor on TNT's "Men of a Certain Age" stresses it's only a brief visit.
"It's a cameo," Emmy winner Romano tells Zap2it. "It's real quick, a drive-by. As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.

"I Love You Phillip Morris" came out of nowhere and secured a nod for the 2011 Writers Guild Awards. Based on the book by Steven McVicker, the film starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGRegor as prisoners in love received a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination.
"Phillip Morris" will be competing with awards-favorites "127 Hours" (screenplay by Danny Boyle & Simon Beaufoy), "The Social Network" (screenplay Aaron Sorkin), "The Town" (screenplay by Peter Craig and Ben Affleck & Aaron Stockard), and True Grit (screenplay by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen).
In the Original Screenplay category, critics-darlings "Black Swan" (screenplay by Mark Heyman and Andres Heinz and John McLaughlin), "The Fighter" (screenplay by Scott Silver and Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson), "Inception" (Christopher Nolan), and "The Kids Are All Right" (written by Lisa Cholodenko & Stuart Blumberg) will be competing with "Please Give" by Nicole Holofcener. Jb Smoove is set to star in a new laffer project in development at Fox.
Smoove has teamed with Date Night helmer Shawn Levy and The Office writer Aaron Shure to develop the series, that has been given a script order from Fox.
The show will star Smoove as a recently divorced man who can't afford to move out or sell his house -- and instead relocates to the basement with his ex-wife and kids still living upstairs.
Here is what Shawn Levy had to say about the project:
"He's trying to get his life back, and has noble aims, but has a talent for consistently tripping himself up. There's shades of 'Roseanne' in its blue collar subject matter. It felt like a good comedy vehicle for Jb and an idea suited for our moment."
This single-camera comedy is being developed by 20th Century Fox TV with Smoove set to star and produce.

It's going to be a good year for J.B. Smoove. The comedian and Curb Your Entusiasm favorite has got a new season of Curb coming up, he's in the Farrelly Borhters film [1] Hall Pass, and has already shot a role [2] in David Gordon Green's The Sitter, where he and Sam Rockwell play drug dealers on the trail of Jonah Hill. Now he's got a part in Cameron Crowe's film We Bought a Zoo, and he'll also star in a new sitcom being developed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and Aaron Shure (The Office). We don't know what role the actor will play in We Bought a Zoo, which also features Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Angus MacFayden, Elle Fanning and Patrick Fugit in an adaptation of Benjamin Mee's memoir about the years when he bought and ran a wildlife sanctuary. We have more detail on the TV show,...

Fox has made a late comedy buy, a half-hour project from actor-comedian J.B. Smoove and The Office writer-producer Aaron Shure to star the Curb Your Enthusiasm standout. It hails from 20th TV and Shawn Levy and Marty Adelstein's studio-based company 21 Laps/Adelstein. The project was pitched by Shure, Smoove and Levy, with Fox brass buying it in the room with a script commitment. Co-created by Smoove and Shure, the untitled blue-collar comedy, which shares some aspects with Roseanne, centers on a husband and a father (Smoove) who has gotten divorced but, with the economy being as it is, can't afford to move out and instead moves into the family home's basement. It will revolve around the man's relationship with his family, his parents, his co-workers and a guy in a nursing home. "He’s trying to get his life back from the basement up, from the ground up," Levy said.

AMC's "The Walking Dead" is vying for new series prize, battling "Boardwalk Empire", "Justified", "Treme" and "Men of a Certain Age" along the way. "Empire" in particular is also nominated for drama series against older and more prominent shows like "Mad Men" and "Dexter".

As hard as it may be to believe sometimes, someone (or someones) actually sits down and writes a movie or TV show before you end up seeing it at your local multiplex or on your favorite TV network. The people who do the sitting and the writing are, surprisingly, called writers and, like the Directors, the Golden Globes and the Oscars, they have their own awards show.
This week, the Writers Guild of America, which is the trade group and advocate for writers, announced its nominations for outstanding achievement in feature film and television, radio, news, promotional writing, and graphic animation during the 2009 season to be honored at the upcoming 2010 Writers Guild Awards on February 20, 2010, in Los Angeles and New York.
We realize that these nominations may not be as glamorous as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but we kinda like writers around here and think they do a pretty important job.

Awards heavyweights "Mad Men," "30 Rock" and "The Office" and buzzed-about newcomer "Modern Family" led the TV field for the 2010 Writers Guild Awards with three nominations each.
AMC's "Mad Men" and NBC's "30 Rock" and "The Office" are in the running for best drama/comedy series, and each received two nominations for episodic writing. "Family" made the cut for best comedy series, best new series and best episodic writing for a comedy series.
ABC's "Family" was one of two new shows to break into the best series categories along with Fox's quirky high-school dramedy "Glee," which faces "Family" in the best comedy series and best new series fields.
While the WGA Awards are still in its nomination phase, Fox's "The Simpsons" can already uncork the champagne. The veteran series is assured to win the animation category after landing all five nomination slots.
