Exclusive: Seven years after Ryan Bartlett left UTA to launch Hyperion, the veteran talent agent is leaving the boutique agency to join Independent Artist Group. He will work in Iag’s talent department, reporting to Andrew Rogers in a reunion for the duo who were agents together at Paradigm where Rogers headed Motion Picture Talent.
The deal for Bartlett came together late last week and was finalized over the weekend. He plans to bring many of his longtime clients to Iag, including Xochitl Gomez, Ashton Sanders and Natasha Behnam.
Meanwhile, the plan for Hyperion, which Bartlett ran since its June 2017 inception, is to continue with agents Austin Leshay and Will Atlas at the helm.

Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, creators of the award-winning Las Culturistas podcast, hosted their third annual Las Culturistas Culture Awards on Saturday, June 15 at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. In our current climate of FYC campaigns pulsating as Emmys voting nears, this award show feels like a breath of fresh air in the midst of festival season and before our official awards season kicks off.
Real life attendees Hannah Einbinder, Julia Fox, Julio Torres, and Josh Sharp & Aaron Jackson (as Natalie Portman & Julianne Moore) presented awards to the likes of Tilda Swinton, Pedro Pascal, and Sabrina Carpenter, who all submitted video acceptance speeches. From “Anatomy of a Fall” star Messi winning the award for Most Amazing Impact in Film to Cole Escola winning the Cate Blanchett Award for Good Acting, laughs roared and roared as winners were announced.

Their run may be over at Max, but “Tokyo Vice” showrunner J.T. Rogers and executive producer Alan Poul aren’t ready to give up on the show’s future yet. Just days after the streamer canceled the critical smash hit series, the pair sat down with Variety for an interview about the latest season, and whether Season 2 will indeed be the show’s last. And if Rogers and Poul get their way, then more “Tokyo Vice” is inevitable.

When the news broke earlier this month that Japan-set crime drama “Tokyo Vice” had been canceled, it came as a blow to fans, but not exactly a surprise. For two seasons on Max, the show — adapted by showrunner J.T. Rogers from journalist Jake Adelstein’s memoir of the same name — stood out as an increasingly rare gem in a contracting, decidedly post-peak TV landscape. Starring Ansel Elgort as a fictionalized version of Adelstein, a journalist who embeds with the yakuza as a reporter at the country’s largest daily paper, “Tokyo Vice” delivered an immersive, detailed portrait of the global capital at the turn of the millennium.
Better yet, “Tokyo Vice” improved over time. Season 2 broadened the story’s focus from Jake to a larger ensemble, while also bringing his long-simmering conflict with ascendant boss Tozawa (Ayumi Tanida) to a head. The finale offered a satisfying conclusion, ending on Jake...

Looking beyond the glitz of Canadian broadcasters rolling out their latest new and returning U.S. series at their recent upfront presentations in Toronto, you’d have seen local networks putting their best foot forward in pitches to local media buyers and agencies.
But below the surface, the Canadians are paddling furiously to keep pace in a rapidly-changing TV industry where increased cord-cutting and a continuing linear TV ad recession has local players chasing viewers online with pricey American series to keep pace with Netflix.
Ahead of the Banff World Media Festival this week, Warner Bros. Discovery did deals to move popular lifestyle and entertainment brands like HGTV, Food Network, Cooking Channel, Magnolia Network and OWN from Corus Entertainment to rival Rogers Sports and Media. Canadians Drew and Jonathan Scott of Property Brothers fame on HGTV are mainstays of the lifestyle and entertainment channel popular across North America.

“Tokyo Vice” creator and executive producer J.T. Rogers had a two-season story mapped out from the beginning, so much so that he had to make sure that the first season of the Max drama seeded the details and Easter eggs that wouldn’t pay off or become important until the second season.
“The pressure for me at least was having an idea going on for a few years now and really champing at the bit to get to the places we wanted,” Rogers tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Hikari, our wonderful director on Episode 4 in Season 1, said, ‘I don’t think we have time to get that shot of the watch.’ I said, ‘You need it because 11 hours from now on television, there’s going to be a reference to it.’ So there are so many things we set up narratively, and to have the luxury...

Max has done it again. The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer has canceled another one of their masterful, underappreciated shows, this time the enthralling, cross-cultural crime period piece “Tokyo Vice.” The news was announced at the PGA’s Produced By conference by the show’s creator and executive producer J.T. Rogers and executive producer and director Alan Poul during a panel with Max original programming chief, Sarah Aubrey.
Despite the series’ short run, the panelists indicated that this was a mutual decision.
“We’re grateful not only to Max, but to our partners Fifth Season, who sold the show around the world, and made it a global success story,” Rogers and Poul wrote in join statement shared by Variety. “They were in the trenches with us always, guaranteeing that we could make the show we wanted to make. The response from both the press and from fans, in particular to Season 2, has been overwhelming.

Tokyo Vice’s days on Max have come to a conclusion.
During a panel at the Produced By conference Saturday in Los Angeles, producers confirmed that the recently concluded second season will be the show’s last on the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed platform.
Originally pitched as a two-season show with the events of the series having ended with its April 4 finale, fittingly titled “Endgame,” star Ansel Elgort also only signed on for two seasons of the series.
“Over the last five years, Max has made sure we got to tell our story. They have supported us through thick and thin. Not only did they give us these two seasons, they said yes when we asked to end season one with a series of cliffhangers, and they said yes when we asked for two extra episodes so we could land the plane in the way [creator] J.T. “Tokyo Vice” — the crime drama that has run on Max for two seasons — has come to an end, at least for now.
The cancelation was confirmed Saturday at the PGA’s Produced By conference in Los Angeles during a panel discussion about the Ansel Elgort series and the Emmy-winning Max comedy “Hacks.” Max original programming chief Sarah Aubrey, along with “Tokyo Vice” creator and executive producer J.T. Rogers and director and executive producer Alan Poul, detailed the development of the series that was an elaborate production, much of it on the streets of Tokyo.
Aubrey characterized the decision to end after Season 2, which bowed in February, as something that was planned as a storytelling arc to allow the writers to build toward a clear end point. Rogers also characterized it as a mutual decision to support the storytelling.
“To know you’d have the two-season arc was really wonderful,” Rogers said.

Superman is set to be the first major installment of James Gunn’s new and improved Dcu. However, it seems that the shadow of the Dceu is never going to stop haunting WB, as Snyder’s version of the DC Mythos still seems to be the benchmark for a whole section of the fandom that the new Dcu is going to be measured against.

Despite all the efforts being taken to create a new cohesive universe that could bring fans a brilliantly shared continuity across multiple films, there seems to be a lot of criticisms that are being levied at the film without even a proper trailer or even a teaser. The Dcu seems to be unable to escape the shadow of the Dceu, as a slew of fans have found yet another aspect of James Gunn’s version of Superman to critique.

It has been over five years since Avengers: Endgame was first released. Many chapters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have opened and closed since. However, there is no denying that a piece of their fans’ hearts went with the final minutes of the film. Many stories ended when the 2019 movie was released, and audiences were forced to say goodbye to several characters they grew up with.

Jim Henson: Idea Man is a story about how rare it is to be in the presence of a true original and such pure creative genius. Jim Henson was not just an expert at marketing his brand; he was certainly no fool in that department. He was an artist of the highest order. Mr. Henson was a technological innovator, allowing his puppets to emote and move in unprecedented ways.
Mr. Henson then brought those talents to Hollywood films, contributing to projects such as Labyrinth and the experimental The Dark Crystal. Roger Corman, the pioneering producer and director, known affectionately as “the king of B movies,” passed away on May 9 at his home in Santa Monica, California. Corman had as much influence over modern Hollywood as Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. And for good reason: Without him there likely wouldn’t even have been a Spielberg or Scorsese.
This maker of hundreds of low-budget horror, sci-fi, and exploitation films is to this day remembered by many, and rather unfairly, as a B-movie hack, but Corman’s aesthetic sensibilities have come to dominate the franchises we now call tent poles, and his protégés number among the most influential people in cinema. And he enjoyed every minute of it.
Corman came off as very humble, resembling no one so much as Mr. Rogers. He laughed at himself and his experiences frequently. Many of the movies that he made were ridiculous but they were knowingly so.

Being one of the MCU’s beloved characters, Captain America has been involved in numerous projects. Currently, there’s a movie in the works centered on Sam Wilson’s Captain America, slated for release in 2025. Additionally, recent rumors suggest that Chris Evans’s Captain America may come out of retirement.
Reportedly, Chris Evans is set to return in a limited series that follows Captain America’s journey to return the Infinity Stones to their rightful places in time, as per MyTimeToShineHello.
The concept does seem intriguing, especially considering that the process depicted in the movies was glossed over and rushed. This rumor gains further traction from other recent reports suggesting that Evans has already signed on to reprise his former role.

Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame marked its five-year anniversary on April 30, and composer Alan Silvestri has now explained why he feels one sequence in particular has had such a lasting impact.
We are, of course, referring to the "Portals" scene.
During the climactic battle, Thanos manages to defeat Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America - but Steve Rogers isn't about to stay down. As the Sentinel of Liberty dusts himself off and prepares to fight until his last breath, he hears a familiar "on your left," and turns around to see Black Panther and the others recently-revived heroes assembling through Doctor Strange and Wong's mystical portals.
While speaking to Games Radar, Silvestri said he believes this moment has become so beloved and iconic because of what Rogers had experienced in the build-up.
"The spectacle [of Portals] is ultimately overwhelming, but I think it's emotional because we've never seen every ounce of optimism destroyed in Captain America,...

Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers were friends for decades, drawn together by an electric current of energy . Parton and Rogers had such good rapport that rumors of an affair between them circulated for years. Both denied having ever acted on their feelings, but they said they felt the chemistry between them from the moment they met.
Dolly Parton met Kenny Rogers on the set of her TV show
In 1976, Parton waded deeper into the pool of her talents by hosting a variety show, Dolly. One of her earliest guests was Rogers. She said that his appearance on her show marked the beginning of their crackling chemistry.
“Kenny Rogers was also a guest on that early show,” she wrote in her book Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business. “That began the chemistry that would make such a hit with the public in our future projects together. There was something about the combination that just worked.

Dolly Parton has collaborated with many musicians over the years, and she says she often gets along well with them. Some, like Reba McEntire, are lifelong friends and others, like Kenny Rogers, became the subject of tabloid fodder about her love life. One artist with whom Parton sang a duet on her 1976 variety show, Dolly, always had a place in her heart.

In 1976, Parton welcomed country musician Tom T. Hall on her variety show, Dolly. They each performed a handful of songs and sang duets on “Sneaky Snake” and “I Love.”

In a letter announcing her third album, Don’t Forget Me, singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers says she got inspired for her latest project by creating a “younger Thelma & Louise,” using that storytelling vessel to navigate difficult personal truths of her own. Such self-exploring wanderlust has been a common theme for Rogers, an artist who proclaimed “I found myself when I was going everywhere” on her first LP. This time out, she’s taking a metaphorical road trip through her own past as a means of escaping her disconcerting present.

Maggie Rogers’s music has always felt independent of pop trends, and the singer-songwriter’s third studio album, Don’t Forget Me, likewise sounds unlike anything else being released at the moment. The album’s 10 brisk, lightly rocking songs evoke the radio-friendly pop-rock of early-2000s Sheryl Crow or Jewel while sometimes, as on the title track, looking further back to ’70s soft rock a la Carole King.
Written across the course of just five days, and consisting mostly of first-take recordings, Don’t Forget Me boasts a certain off-the-cuff charm, a first-thought-best-thought quality emblematic of an increasingly confident songwriter. “So Sick of Dreaming,” a swaying indie-pop tune filled with barbs directed at Rogers’s ex for ditching her to go to a ballgame, embodies the album’s carefree ethos. “And by the way, the Knicks lost,” she quips.
The songs on Don’t Forget Me are diaristic but rarely confessional.

A darkly comic crime odyssey set in middle-of-nowhere America, writer-director Shane Atkinson’s Laroy, Texas wears its Coen brothers influence on its sleeve. And while it never quite reaches the hilarious heights or existential depths of the Coens’ finest work, it does offer similarly enjoyable mixture of the macabre and the absurd.
Atkinson’s film begins with a regular schmuck named Ray (John Magaro) being summoned to a greasy diner and handed an envelope full of photos that show his wife, Stacy-Lynn (Megan Stevenson), cheating on him. It’s devastating information to receive, and it doesn’t help that Ray is hearing it from a guy like Skip (Steve Zahn)—a self-styled private eye who dresses in a bolo tie and cowboy hat, and swears that he’s as much of a detective as any of the other boys on the force, even if he has spelled the word incorrectly on his business cards.

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Ripley” below.]
The turning point for “Ripley,” Steven Zaillian’s limited Netflix series re-imagining of Patricia Highsmith’s crime novel, “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” occurs in Episode 3 (“Sommerso”), when grifter Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) murders Dickie (Johnny Flynn) in a boat in Sanremo. But the grifter discovers that murder is a filthy business in a bravura 20-minute sequence, in which he has difficulty disposing of Dickie’s body, and we observe every arduous moment in close to real-time.
This protracted view of Tom’s twisted mind in action is made even more menacing in black-and-white (shot by “There Will Be Blood” Oscar winner Robert Elswit). After learning that his grift has come to a sudden end, Tom grabs the oar and beats Dickie to death. But then everything goes wrong.

On one end sits Ozaki (Bokuzō Masana), the Meicho Shimbun newspaper executive who confesses to Emi (Rinko Kikuchi) that he was the one who destroyed the Yoshino videotape — although “confesses” is too generous a word. Ozaki solves her season-long mystery without batting an eye, before mansplaining his action as if Emi is an idiot. He had to destroy the tape. If the Meicho ran a story about a government official’s involvement in the murder of a hostess, then the paper would be frozen out of government business for years. “And how would that serve our readers?” he asks. Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of “Tokyo Vice,” now streaming on Max.
Season 2 of “Tokyo Vice,” the neo-noir crime drama set in Tokyo, Japan, and loosely based on a memoir written by journalist Jake Adelstein, has come to a close in an explosive finale that both sent off the series’ main, two-season running antagonist — and laid the foundation for what could potentially come from the Max thriller if a third season were to be greenlit.
The show stars Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe, and tells the story of a Japanese-fluent American writer (Elgort) who works his way into covering crime for one of Tokyo’s most prominent newspapers. In the process, he forges an unlikely bond with a dogged local police detective, Hiroto Katagiri (Watanabe), with the duo sharing information and working together to untangle sordid yakuza activities.
