Storyline

Endgame is an original drama series centering on brilliant chess master, Arkady Balagan. Traumatized by the murder of his fiancée, Balagan has become a prisoner in his luxury Vancouver hotel, terrified to step outside. To pay his bill, Balagan starts solving mysteries - using an unlikely band of hotel employees and chess fanatics to do his legwork. Arrogant, brilliant and charismatic, the Russian-born Balagan uses the skills that made him chess champion of the world to solve the crimes that mystify others. He imagines events, interviews the living and the dead, and runs conflicting scenarios - all in his head. And we get to watch right along with him as he solves crimes that baffle the police. In Endgame, we see genius at work. Written by Avrum Jacobson

Trivia

Main character Arkady Balagan mocks Hugo Lum, the hotel detective of the Vancouver hotel where the film is set, over his former career as a homicide detective. Patrick Gallagher, the actor who portrays Lum, portrayed a police officer in many episodes of another series set in Vancouver - Da Vinci's inquest. In the follow-on series Da Vinci's City Hall, he becomes a homicide detective. See more »

Looking at crimes from the point-of-view of a chess game and the players as chess pieces is fascinating. The chemistry of this ensemble cast led by damaged Russian Ex-pat Chess-master (played by Shawn Doyle) is a testament to the phrase "friends are the family you choose". Albeit a dysfunctional one, but then what family isn't a little bit? I was curious to see where the storyline was headed. I really would have liked to see the back story of the character of Sam (played by Torrance Coombs). Where does he go when he's not assisting Arkady solving mysteries in trade for chess matches? It's really nice to see a Vancouver, BC based show actually play as Vancouver, BC. Sadly it looks like we'll only see one season. A shame as the show was just hitting its stride.
