Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar very much wants to be one of the plethora of low-budget 1970s knock offs of Star Wars riding the comet tail of that phenomenon. It’s just not bad enough to be lumped in with Bartle Beyond the Stars or the 3-D mess of Spacehunters. Nor is it good enough to be a thoughtful low-budget meditation on the soul. It falls in between and is quickly forgotten the moment you turn off the DVD of the 2022 release, out now from Uncork’d Entertainment.
Late in the 30th century, mankind has somehow managed to survive the contemporary mess we’ve made of ourselves and has even managed to find a way to preserve the human soul, reducing it to a blue goo. The catch is that it’s expensive, so only the top 1% of the 1% can afford it, although starship captain Kip Corman (Michael Paré), a scavenger eking out a living,...

Stars: Nathan Shepka, Colin MacDougall, Graeme MacPherson, Tony Macdonald, Laura MacDougall, Stephen Kerr | Written by Nathan Shepka, Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Nathan Shepka
Lock & Load, the sequel to 2021’s Holiday Monday, is once again directed and written by Nathan Shepka, though this time with a little additional script work by Tom Jolliffe. Shepka also returns as Nick, the independent security contractor. This time out he and his partner Derek are taking some target practice on another bank holiday when they get a call from Agent Stokes’ (Graeme MacPherson) wife. He hasn’t come home, do they know where he is?
They don’t know, though we know he’s been after arms dealer Miles Steiger and his partner The Chess Master, “Everyone’s a pawn in my game”, and unfortunately has had his cover blown.
I hadn’t seen the first film but Shepka’s script makes it very easy...

Michael Jai White in the action-film The Island. Courtesy of Saban Films
To be honest, Michael Jai White headlines a lot of action flicks that many would consider beneath their taste level. But he’s really good at these things and always fun to watch when you’re in the mood for a good guy kicking a bunch of bad guy butts in a vehicle that allows your higher cerebral functions to relax and enjoy some time off from their usual duties. The Island is another from his formulaic wheelhouse. Among the many movies and TV series that have borne this title before, this one will rank as the most… recent.
White plays an L.A. cop who grew up on a tropical island. When he learns that his brother was killed, he returns to find the one what done done him in. After he’d left to graze in a bigger pasture,...

The 1990s were an exciting period for action films, with many of them getting released direct-to-video and showing up seemingly randomly at local video stores, requiring fans of the genre to have memberships at multiple locations to get to see everything. There was so much that if attention wasn’t paid, titles would be missed easily or rented twice under different titles at different video stores. Stars emerged within those ranks and gathered the love and adoration of fans. Here are the 10 of the best Dtv action stars of that era:
Dolph Lundgren
Let’s start with the obvious man on the list, the one that everyone saw films from at their local video stores. Lundgren had films that were released in theaters, on video, and direct to cable in some cases during the 1990s, but one thing is for sure, he was a mainstay of the action film aisle...

Joe Cornet and Alexander Nevsky‘s action packed western Gunfight at Rio Bravo was released in the US by Shout! Studios back in January and is available on all of the major digital platforms. The sequel Taken from Rio Bravo was shot in Arizona last summer and is now in the final stages of post-production – and the project went over so well when it was presented to international distributors at the Cannes Film Festival last month, Cornet and Nevsky have announced that they’re putting another sequel on the fast track to production! This one will be titled The Last Heroes of Rio Bravo, and filming is scheduled to begin in August.
Cornet will be directing The Last Heroes of Rio Bravo from a screenplay by Craig Hamann, who also wrote the previous two films and crafted the stories with Nevsky. A plot synopsis for the third entry in the...

Spoiler Alert… I f**king loved Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar.
This was quite possibly the most fun I have had watching a sci-fi movie as of late… Any budget! You know you’re in for an absolute ride when in the first 10 minutes the line “I’m going to bathe in your blood and tears” is dropped. Normally a scary thought if it hadn’t been for the massive lava dragon wormy dinosaur thing moments prior.
I will always be a fan of a movie that is fully aware that it maybe doesn’t have the budget it needs to be the movie it wants to be, but does not let that stand in its way of throwing...

Plot: Space scavengers and a group of mercenaries race across the cosmos in a search for a long-lost freighter that is said to contain great treasure.
Review: I have a lot of admiration for filmmakers who don’t let financial limitations stifle their creativity or force them to minimize the scope of their stories. In that regard, there’s a lot to admire about director Garo Setian’s sci-fi adventure film Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar. Just like the title instantly brings to mind Star Wars, Space Wars is reminiscent of the low budget sci-fi movies producers like Roger Corman pumped out in the wake of the original Star Wars’ success. You know, movies like Battle Beyond the Stars and the movies that featured stock footage from Battle Beyond the Stars. Space Wars just happens to have been made on an even lower budget than those had.

"It can't be found." Neither can any good directors, I guess. Uncork'd Ent. has revealed an official trailer for a low budget sci-fi creation called Space Wars: Quest for the Deepstar, marking the feature directorial debut of an editor named Garo Setian. Yeah there isn't much here. The title and the footage looks like it's another The Asylum spoof, with even worse VFX. Life is an adventure for space scavengers Kip Corman and his daughter Taylor as they navigate their ship through a universe filled with monsters, aliens, and robots in order to reach the mythical Deepstar and collect the riches within. They want to make bank in hopes that the money will allow them to bring back their loved one from the dead. The action-packed sci-fi adventure movie stars Michael Paré, Olivier Gruner, Sarah French, Tyler Gallant, Rachele Brooke Smith, and Sadie Katz. This looks so hilariously bad, it's beyond parody,...

It’s been a while since I’ve watched a low-budget sci-fi action movie that wants to be a big-budget sci-fi movie but that’s exactly what you get with Space Wars: Quest For The Deepstar. Albert Pyun’s Nemesis franchise was a staple of the Dtv era, with the Olivier Gruner starring first film exploding into video stores in 1992 and a further 3 installments released in 1995 and 1996 – probably because Pyun churned out the sequels in order to cash in on the popularity of the original… Why the history lesson? Well a Fifth film in the franchise, Nemesis 5: The New Model, is currently in production! Pyun is not behind the camera this time, merely a producer, with filmmaker Dustin Ferguson (The Amityville Legacy) taking the directorial reigns.
It is the year 2077 and terrorist organization known as The Red Army Hammerheads now dominate the Earth. The fate of humanity now rests in the hands of The New Model, Ari Frost (Schuylar Craig). Trained under the wing of Alex Rain (Sue Price), she must form an army of Cyborg Humans to take down the regime and regain control.

Ok, let’s all just say it together. Scott Adkins is the saviour of Dtv action movies. Charismatic, skilled and just a downright badass (and likeable) actor, whatever Adkins seemingly touches turns to gold – the Universal Soldier franchise was improved by his addition, as was the Undisputed series: in fact he made that particular fighting franchise Better with each and every sequel. Even the football-themed series Green Street was made watchable by the appearance of Adkins in the third installment, and that coming from someone who, typically, refuses to watch movies based on idiotic football hooligans.
Hold on… Turns out I may have a man-crush on Scott Adkins! And that’s not a bad thing.

If there’s ever a phrase that will have me instantly reaching for my wallet it’s “a Scott Adkins film…” Honestly, nine times out of ten I will buy an Adkins film without so much as seeing a trailer. Why? Well because for me, Adkins is keeping the Dtv dream alive, picking up the action hard-man mantle from 90s pioneers like Jeff Speakman, Olivier Gruner, Gary Daniels and in particular Jeff Wincott, one of the only other true action heroes to have the same perfect blend of fighting skills, charisma and acting chops as Adkins.

Sorry to say, I don't know what, exactly, is being said in a new trailer for Showdown in Manila, but the action on display makes the intent clear. Mark Dacascos stars in and directs, with a bevy of action stars -- Don "The Dragon" Wilson, Cynthia Rothrock, Olivier Gruner -- promised to liven things up. Here's the synopsis from IMDb.com: The film will unfold in Manila, Philippines, and in the jungles of the island of Boracay. On a tropical island in the privacy of living Russian middle-aged man (Alexander Newsky). But the quiet life interrupted by the murder of one of the locals. In order to protect the daughter of the slain Filipino bandits Russian guy have to remember the past, he tried to bury.Ok, I'm guessing...

Like something sprung from the low budget, high ambition fantasies of the 80's VHS era lunatics who brought us "Mega Force" (or maybe, more appropriately the cyberpunk fantasies of something like "Nemesis"), comes this Xbox Live box art and a banner for the "Far Cry 3" Dlc "Blood Dragon."
The image comes from--where else--dedicated NeoGaf users possibly giving us a hint of what Ubisoft has in store for what would appear to be more story content from last year's head trip shooter.
If legit, then all of our VHS action movie fantasies could be coming true in video game form, possibly going deeper down the hallucinatory rabbit hole of the main story which stained--sometimes valiantly--at giving players a glimpse of drug-fueled insanity. Mostly, though, it was an excuse for poorly-designed boss encounters that relied too heavily on Qte-based conversations. Narrative failings aside, actually playing "Far Cry 3" was one of the great...

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything regarding Albert Pyun’s sequel to his classic 80s Van Damme flick Cyborg, however Pyun hs taken to Facebook to announce that filming has begun on the film, titled Cyborgs: Rise of the Slingers, which will chronicle the genesis of the Slingers who, if you remember the original flick, were guardian mercenaries in Cyborg.
The screenplay is by Randall Fontana and Cynthia Curnan, and so far Sasha Mitchell, Michael Pare, and Olivier Gruner have been named as being attached to the project. To accompany the announcement, Pyun has also released a new title design for the film by Artifex in Montreal. Check it out:...

The action movie. It’s my bread and butter. Give me 90 minutes of arse-kicking over the latest critically acclaimed drama any day. But between the constant stream of new action flicks coming out of Hollywood via for your attention alongside a barrage of straight to DVD releases it can be hard to find the really Good action movies these days – you can’t even rely on the big name action stars to provide solid action entertainment these days!
So with that in mind I thought I’d complied my Top 30 underrated action movies – those that may have slipped under the radar of all but those that scour Impact Magazine cover to cover, but definitely deserve hunting down. In part one I’m taking a look at the films 30 – 21. So in no particular order…

Well, you know that I wasn’t going to allow Haywire to escape from my local monsterplex without giving it a look. A guy who’s written about Lady Shiva and Black Canary, not to mention a somewhat wimpified Wonder Woman who used martial arts in lieu of genuine superpowers – this guy was about to let pass a movie starring one Gina Carano who, in addition to being gorgeous, has real-life ass-kicker credentials, a film directed by one of the most interesting gents in movieland? No siree!
For reasons that I suspect are exempt from rationality, I have always responded to movie swashbucklers who can actually do the stuff they’re pretending to do – in the case of the excellent Jackie Chan, actually doing it for the camera. So, either in theaters or in my domicile, I’ve watched flicks starring Jackie, Bruce Lee, and, descending to the region of lesser lights,...

Albert Pyun's long gestating Tales of an Ancient Empire has been picked up for distribution by Liongate, but apparently the version we'll all be able to see starting January 24th isn't exactly the director's own vision for the film so he's decided to release the first 18 minutes of his cut for comparison's sake. Check it out!
Synopsis:
The sword and sorcery epic, written by Cynthia Curnan, tells the story of a princess forced on a quest to recruit the greatest warriors of the ancient world to save her kingdom from a demonic sorceress. But the odyssey to find them reveals a secret past for all.
Michael Pare plays "Oda", father of Kevin Sorbo's character - Aedan - as well as Victoria Maurette's Kara (via Whitney Able's Xia - the vampire sorceress). He also fathers Princess Tanis (Melissa Ordway) and Rajan (Janelle Taylor) amongst others. The film...

Earlier this month we brought you news on the plan by one of my favourite directors, Albert Pyun, to helm a sequel to his classic 80s Van Damme flick Cyborg. And now we have some more new on the film along with some new teaser art.
The film, titled Cyborg: Rise of the Slingers, comes from a screenplay is by Randall Fontana and Cynthia Curnan, and stars (s0 far) Sasha Mitchell, Michael Pare, and Olivier Gruner. The movie will chronicle the genesis of the Slingers who, if you remember the original flick, were guardian mercenaries in Cyborg. Dread Central also report that Pyun in the process of nailing down the project’s lead actress who will be revealed, along with the full cast roster, later this month.

Director Albert Pyun dropped us a line with an update on his upcoming Cyborg: Rise of the Slingers (formerly Red Moon) and included a bit of teaser art for us to share. He's in the process of nailing down the project's lead actress and promises to reveal that info next week along with the full cast roster.
What he could tell us in the meantime is that "the film is very nasty and pure horror. My first all-out horror film." Music to the ears, right?
The screenplay is by Randall Fontana and Cynthia Curnan, and confirmed cast members thus far include Sasha Mitchell, Michael Pare, and Olivier Gruner. Cyborg: Rise of the Slingers mixes steam and cyberpunk with post-apocalyptic vampire horror. It will chronicle the genesis of the Slingers, who were guardian mercenaries in Cyborg. And it will explain why the characters in Cyborg were named after musical gear.

Director Albert Pyun dropped us a line with an update on Cyborg: Rise of the Slingers (formerly Red Moon) noting that he's leaving the sword and sorcery elements behind and instead will be adapting the loose prequel to his 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle Cyborg into the steampunk universe. He also included the film's revised artwork by Rob E. Brown.
Pyun expects to commence shooting November 28th in Las Vegas, Nevada. The screenplay is by Randall Fontana and Cynthia Curnan, and they're in talks with Kevin Sorbo as well as Roxy Gunn. If signed, the two will join Sasha Mitchell, Michael Pare, and Olivier Gruner. The lead female role has yet to be cast; they are looking at a couple of newcomers in Las Vegas to play the "meanest and most hard core radical action hero I've ever put on film," says Pyun.

Director Albert Pyun dropped us a line this week to show off the inked artwork (by Rob E. Brown) for his upcoming film Red Moon, which he describes as a post-apocalyptic fantasy with lots of violence and creatures. Read on for more details!
Pyun expects to wrap the film, co-written by Cynthia Curnan and Randall Fontana, by November 24th. It marks his third collaboration with Fontana. Curnan also produces. The shoot will take place entirely in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the film has been already picked up for North America release by Wrekin Hill in the late spring 2012.
Red Moon serves as a sequel of sorts to the filmmaker's Tales of an Ancient Empire. Pyun tells us, "For Red Moon I took the sword and sorcery world into a post-apocalyptic world, a similar world to my Cyborg. So its grittier and darker. The idea is it's 20 years after Tales ends,...

In promotion of its festival run, we've nailed down the first bit of nifty character art by Rob E. Brown from Albert Pyun's latest film Tales of an Ancient Empire. Dig on the eye candy below!
The flick stars Michael Pare, Kevin Sorbo, Victoria Maurette, Melissa Ordway, Janelle Taylor, Cazzy Golomb, Sasha Mitchell, Olivier Gruner, Norbert Weisse, and Scott Paulin.
"Mainly, I know the film is unique as we've strived the past three years to create something different and a bit off the wall," says Pyun. "It's certainly an original and twisted take on the sword and sorcerer genre."
The next screenings for Tales of an Ancient Empire will be at Combat Con in Las Vegas - June 25 at 7:30 Pm at the Tuscany Hotel, then it begins rolling out across North America (with confirmed stops in Honolulu, Southern California, Detroit, San Francisco, Louisville - FrightNight Fest, and B...

When the first Expendables movie made $275 million worldwide despite a pretty violent R rating, there was no question that there would be a follow-up film. But with the star, writer and director of the first film, Sylvester Stallone, scaling back his involvement to just coming up with the story and kicking ass, who would be trusted to get all those explosions and one-liners on film?
Luckily, the guy who directed the ensemble action flick Con Air, Simon West, was available to take the gig. Since Con Air, West has directed Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic and others, and was even an executive producer on Black Hawk Done, so he's well familiar with blowing shit up.
Add a cool blue filter and this could be from The Expendables.
Production on the sequel begins this summer, but Stallone has already been talking up the involvement of a slew of other stars,...

Many things are happening for Albert Pyun's latest film Tales of an Ancient Empire, and they are all good. The flick has landed some new players, some new eye candy, and even some solid distro. Read on for the details.

Michael Pare plays "Oda", father of Kevin Sorbo's character - Aedan - as well as Victoria Maurette's Kara (via Whitney Able's Xia - the vampire sorceress). He also fathers Princess Tanis (Melissa Ordway) and Rajan (Janelle Taylor) amongst others. The film is about how Oda's womanizing has created both the extreme good and evil in the world. Like most I'd like to have seen Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal in there, but all the same for 80's throwback action this looks fantastic.
If there's a part 2, I'd like to see Chow Youn-Fat, Billy Blanks, Olivier Gruner, Don 'The Dragon' Wilson and the one and only Bolo Yeung dragged out from wherever they are and handed an AK47.

Updates on three different projects have come in over the weekend via Twitter, and rather than do separate stories on each, we've got them all right here ... down & dirty, quick & easy ... just how we know you like it!
Last week we noticed a few stories pop up regarding the possibility of Scream 4 being in 3D. Not having any confirmation, we waited to hear more, which everyone did when Scream writer Kevin Williamson debunked the rumor as follows: "What is this Scream 4 in 3D? First I heard of it." Then, an hour later came, "Guys? Really? 3D? Nahhhhh." Hopefully he won't be pressured into changing his tune. We have enough 3D projects floating around out there already, right?

We first brought news of the impending sequel to classic 80s fantasy flick The Sword And The Sorcerer back in April and while production was delayed some by this past year’s labor uncertainty and while the cast has undergone some slight alterations things are now up and running, with principal photography now freshly begun.
