For her “unofficial” 2009 John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy, Sam Taylor-Johnson had so little music to work with that the opening chord of “Hard Day’s Night” pretty much had to carry the whole movie. You might think that history would repeat for Back to Black, the short but fast-lived story of Amy Winehouse, who rose to international fame in her teens and never saw 28, never mind 30. Surprisingly, the Winehouse estate is all in, and although one might argue that the singer’s trainwreck notoriety has been slightly snow-washed to protect the living, there’s still a surprisingly hard edge here, in a rare film that gives rock ’n’ roll agency to a woman for once, like a reverse-angle Sid & Nancy.
In a way, any music biopic is off to a bad start, since there’s always going to be the curse of symmetry: everything must square with what we already know,...

Lythgoe, who also co-created the long-running dance series with Simon Fuller, said in a statement that he’s stepping aside “voluntarily” ahead of the Sytycd’s 18th season, which is slated to begin March 4 on Fox. Lythgoe will not be credited as an executive producer on the forthcoming season.
“I have informed the producers of So You Think You Can Dance of my decision to step back from participating in this year’s series,” the statement reads. “I did so with a heavy heart but entirely voluntarily because this great program has always been about dance and dancers, and that’s where its focus needs to remain. So You Think You Can Dance premiered on Fox in July 2005. The reality TV dance competition was the brainchild of Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe, producers of American Idol. Throughout its 17 seasons, fans of Sytycd have watched hundreds of contestants cut a rug and leave it all out on the dance floor in hopes of being crowned “America’s favorite dancer” at the end of the competition.
The talent of each Sytycd contestant is analyzed by a panel of two to four permanent judges. Guest judges also join the panel throughout the season, with the panel sometimes ballooning up to twice or more than its normal size for callback episodes or season finales. Elvis Presley spent half of his lifetime in recording studios, performing songs written for him by other artists. In turn, his daughter Lisa Marie Presley wrote much of her own music and had to find her way as a performer outside her famous father’s shadow. She once revealed that Elvis would have “understood” her “path” as an artist because of the “redundant” aspects of his career.

Although Filmart felt quiet on its first morning, with many attendees glued to their phones watching the Oscars, it soon turned into a reasonably vibrant market, with sales companies locked in back-to-back meetings, new project announcements and a few star appearances to liven up proceedings.
With some large country pavilions deciding to skip the event, the trade show floor in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre had a lot of wide corridors and some empty spaces. But there was enough foot traffic and meetings activity to make it feel like a busy market.
“With two record-breaking Hong Kong films before and the historical Oscar wins during the market, this Filmart had a lot of hopeful energy,” says WME Independent’s Nelson Mok. “We found there were many co-production and financing opportunities that are going to pave the way for meaningful collaborations.”

Long before BTS and One Direction, one of the biggest pop bands in the world was a 7-piece group from the UK whose sole purpose was to get the party started. S Club 7 formed in 1998 and went on to achieve huge success, in part due to a hit TV show, quintessential Y2K outfits, and catchy pop anthems, which have gone on to become karaoke staples to this day.

S Club 7 star Hannah Spearritt has revealed she was left “homeless” due to the UK housing crisis.
The singer and actor, who had chart-topping success with the pop group from 1998 to 2003, had to sleep in a friend’s office with her partner, personal trainer Adam Thomas, and their two young children at Christmas.
In a new interview, Spearritt, 41 said they had no choice but to move after a landlord, who had given them two months to leave their rented home in South West London, brought the move date forward.
The decision left them with two days to find a new place and, after finding a short-term rental, that property’s landlord asked them to pay £6,000 up front, which Spearritt called “crazy extortionate”.

It's easy to be dismissive of "Spice World," the 1997 musical comedy about the global musical sensation, the Spice Girls. While the movie has seen some critical reappraisal in recent years, there are still other critics who disregard the film as a frivolous, pointless mess. "Spice World" is far from pointless; some people just missed the point. "Spice World" screenwriter Kim Fuller, brother of British music super-producer Simon Fuller, based his script on the Beatles' 1964 film "A Hard Day's Night," and "Spice World" is a subversive riff that's so much smarter than people give it credit for.
When "Spice World" hit theaters, the band was at the height of their popularity. Their debut album, "Spice," had soared to the top of the Billboard Top 100 and stayed there as their CDs and cassette tapes flew off the shelves. They were an international powerhouse, preaching "girl power" and rocking platform shoes and skin-tight outfits.

"Spice World" debuted 25 years ago, signalling the absolute zenith of the Spice Girls' celebrity and the phenomenon of Girl Power.
They've got fire in their eyes, hunger in their bellies, and great big shoes on their feet. For any girl who grew up in the '90s, there was one quintet of sassy, stomping women who embodied the era more thoroughly than anyone else. The Spice Girls weren't just a pop band: they were a genuine phenomenon. As the yacht drew into Port de Cannes and the camera shutters went into overdrive, it seemed from a distance that five disparate versions of Audrey Hepburn were making the grandest of entrances. Sporting the sunglasses and headscarves of 1950s starlets – variously paired with leopard-print chiffon, rainbow crop-tops and sports-branded underwear – this was a ragtag bunch of ingenues. There was an elegant one, a redheaded one, a childlike one, one who looked a bit angry about something, and one seemingly fresh from a set of mixed doubles.
Waving to the hordes of screaming fans on the docks, the Spice Girls swept ashore at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival ready to strut, pose, backflip and karate-kick their way right through the silver screen. Victoria Beckham Says She ‘Couldn’t Commit’ to a Spice Girls Reunion Tour — But Hologram Spice Might
For a second, imagine this Spice Girls reunion tour lineup: There’s Melanie Brown as Scary Spice, Emma Bunton as Baby Spice, Geri Halliwell as Ginger Spice, Melanie Chisholm as Sport Spice, and rounding out the lineup, Victoria Beckham is flickering onto the stage as Hologram Spice. While certainly not ideal, it might be the closest we get to Posh Spice ever returning to the stage alongside her former groupmates.

The true innovation of Remington Scott’s company, Hyperreal, is not just that he’s created strikingly lifelike digital versions of stars who are living or dead (or completely fictional). It’s that he’s putting those creations into the hands of the talent themselves, empowering them to drive the innovation.
Hyperreal, which is known for its “Hypermodel” digital humans, has in two years created a near-perfect double of pop star Madison Beer (for a performance that won a Webby for Tech Achievement); made Paul McCartney resemble a Beatles-era version of himself; designed a virtual model of the late rapper The Notorious B.I.G.; and, with entertainment mogul Simon Fuller and Verizon, invented an AI-driven alien pop princess named Alta B who appeared with the boy band Now United in their “Jump” video. Signaling confidence in Hyperreal’s continued growth, the Korean giant Cj Enm took a minority stake in Hyperreal in April.

“Having the opportunity to be a judge on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ was an incredible honor for me. Therefore, it is my deepest regret to inform you that I will be leaving the show,” Morrison said in a statement sent to TheWrap late Friday.

After they broke up four decades ago, Abba famously refused all kinds of money for reunion Abba-tars and performances. But a few years ago, British entrepreneur Simon Fuller pitched an idea that piqued the Swedish superstars’ interest. “We got sort of turned on by the thought that we could actually be onstage without us being there,” Abba singer-songwriter Benny Andersson says over Zoom.

Brandon Silverstein, the founder and CEO of S10 Entertainment, is partnering with Simon Fuller for scripted and unscripted projects across film, television, documentary and audio mediums under the S10 Films banner.
Fuller, the founder of Xix Entertainment and creator of the “American Idol” format, will offer a pipeline to S10 clients — which include Anitta and Normani as well as business and publishing ventures with Ryan Tedder, Harv and Max Matsura — and access to additional film and television opportunities.
Said Silverstein: “I’m psyched to partner with Simon, he is someone I grew up idolizing (no pun intended) and has been an incredible resource to me. We all looked pretty good at 20 and “American Idol” is no exception. An ABC singing competition since 2018, this version of “Idol” passed “Grey’s Anatomy” to become the Disney-owned broadcast network’s most-watched series this season, averaging 9.1 million viewers across multiple platforms. That distinction includes one week of delayed viewing, which would disproportionately benefit the scripted medical drama over the singing competition.
That helps explain why, this Sunday, “American Idol” will get its first post-Oscars time slot with an hour-long episode that wraps up Season 20’s judge auditions ahead of Hollywood Week. Even with the recent Academy Awards’ ratings struggles — and how late the awards show can run on the east coast — that post-Oscars time slot is highly coveted scheduling sure to reward host Ryan Seacrest and judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan with a sizable built-in audience.

When Lupita Nyong’o was asked to narrate the Discovery nature documentary series “Serengeti,” the Oscar-winning actor jumped at the opportunity — not just because the subject celebrated to her heritage as an African woman, but because it was an offer she never expected.

The interrelationships between animals and people are tightly wound, and they’re on full display in the Discovery documentary series “Serengeti.” The series, directed by John Downer, tells the story of a group of different animals living in the astonishing African region, and how they not only navigate their need to survive but manage raising children and finding love. Narrated by Academy Award-winner Lupita Nyong’o, “Serengeti” sets out to tell a different kind of nature documentary in nearly every way, from the animals at the focus of the series — to how the story is told.
Downer has been filming animals for 35 years and the Serengeti gave him the opportunity to put his camera on a wide cross-section of life. “There’s nowhere else on Earth where you get such a concentration of incredible animals,” from baboons — animals that, Downer jokes, are aware of how unpopular they are — to cheetahs and lions.
