While, Hulu is not as flashy as some of the other streaming services like Netflix, Max, and Disney+, it has a solid library of shows that are both originals and licensed through various studios. Regarding sci-fi shows, Hulu doesn’t have any big names like 3 Body Problem or Westworld, but it makes up for that by carrying some great new and old shows like Devs and The X-Files, which were loved by millions of people. So, we thought of making a list of the best sci-fi TV shows you can find on Hulu right now.

Are there any sweeter words in the age of too much TV than “limited series?” It’s a category that guarantees minimal time commitment with maximum return — be it weekly watercooler gossip or a delicious binge. The limited series is the perfect hybrid between a movie and a longer-running TV series, with intricate stories, complex characters, and just the right amount of moving parts. The fact that a series will not return makes the narrative precious and the ending paramount, even if that means leaving things deliberately open-ended. This one-off nature makes them perfect for literary adaptations, epic events, and period pieces.
What doesn’t qualify? Those that started as limited series but then blew up enough to get a second season. We’ve also limited (ha!) ourselves to scripted for now, since Ken Burns will probably deserve his own ranking down the line, once he slows down and we...

The limited series “Devs” aired its eight episodes from March 5 to April 16, 2020 as part of the “FX on Hulu” cross-promotion (Disney owns both companies since the Mouse House bought 20th Century Fox). But will the mind-bending sci-fi thriller appeal to Emmy voters? Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with top awards contenders from the show.
See‘Devs’ reviews: Critics say the trippy sci-fi limited series from Alex Garland is ‘daring’ and ‘stunningly ambitious’
FX has done exceedingly well in longform races at the Emmys with “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” both winning Best Limited Series and multiple seasons of “American Horror Story” earning nominations. Hulu has been making inroads too; “The Looming Tower” earned multiple bids in 2019, and “The Act” won for Patricia Arquette‘s supporting performance, so “Devs” is certainly on a platform voters are well acquainted with.
And “Devs” has an impressive pedigree.

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until July 13 to cast their 2020 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs (save for animated documentary/nonfiction which are restricted to their peer groups). Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Three years ago that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
While there has been an explosion in the number of comedy and drama series recently, the limited series genre had been almost static. There were 25 entries in 2015, 26 in 2016 and 25 again in 2017. But there has been an uptick as of late, with 33 such shows submitted in 2018, 35 last year and 41 for this awards cycle. Even so, with five nominees for Best Limited Series, the odds for each of the entries detailed below is pretty good.

From her unforgettable strut down the water-filled aisle as Araminta Lee in Crazy Rich Asians, to her turn as a chain-smoking scientist in Cary Joji Fukunaga’s Netflix series Maniac, Sonoya Mizuno has in the past few years proven that she can disappear into characters, even without a costume as extreme as the faceless humanoid she portrayed in Alex Garland’s Annihilation. But taking on the role of software engineer Lily Chan, in Garland’s first foray into television, forced the British-Japanese dancer-turned-actress to access all of her professional skills, showing once and for all that she is capable of taking center stage.
Deadline: You had worked with Alex twice before, on Ex Machina and Annihilation. At what point did you two start talking about Devs and the possibility of you playing Lily?

On Alex Garland’s science-fiction thriller Devs, cinematographer Rob Hardy helped craft a singularly eerie portrait of the Bay Area, cultivating a world full of compelling visual motifs.
Starring Sonoya Mizuno, the FX series centers on Lily Chan, a software engineer who works for a mysterious quantum computing company known as Amaya. After her boyfriend abruptly disappears, on the first day of his new job at Devs, Lily is left to investigate this secretive division of the business and tease out its dark secrets.
Previously collaborating with Garland on the films Ex Machina and Annihilation, Hardy learned after shooting the latter title of the director’s desire to pursue a long-form project. “He [initially] sent me the first two episodes, and like every Alex Garland script, it’s always exciting and a pleasure to read, because the way he writes is so economical,” the Dp says. “It always has a sense...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the series finale of “Devs” on Hulu.
Fans of the limited series “Devs” know that the “female software engineer investigating her boyfriend’s apparent suicide” logline hardly summarizes how the sci-fi thriller ultimately unfolded.
The sci-fi series centered on Lily Chan (Sonoya Mizuno) who, yes, investigates the sudden apparent suicide of her boyfriend. Both of them work for a quantum computing company, Amaya, founded by the eccentric Forest (Nick Offerman), and whose mascot is a creepy oversized statue of a toddler, planted amid a lush forest somewhere in Silicon Valley.
But “Devs” — written, directed and created by Alex Garland (“Ex Machina”) — also proved to be, at once, a philosophical debate on free will vs. determinism; a crash course in multiverse theory and quantum computing; and a meditation on the megalomania — and hubris — of tech titans.
And for star Mizuno, it was also a love story.

Midway through its first episode, Alex Garland’s Devs launched a mystery that was so intense, it made coder Sergei literally lose his lunch.
Welcomed into the Devs division’s super-secret, super-secure Cube, Sergei was invited by Amaya founder Forest (played by Nick Offerman) to simply claim a desk and read the computer code scrolling before him. As Sergei did that, his face slowly transitioned from mildly curious to surprised… to then downright alarmed. Sickened, in fact. He then sprinted to the employee washroom to vomit, so affected was he by what he saw.

On March 5, “Devs” began the FX on Hulu partnership where the cable channel creates original content for the streaming service. This limited series is created by Oscar nominee Alex Garland, the writer and director behind the mind-bending sci-fi dramas “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation.” It’s his first foray into series television, so what do critics think of his latest cerebral thriller?
As of this writing the series has a MetaCritic score of 72 based on 29 reviews counted thus far: 21 positive, 7 somewhat mixed, only 1 outright negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies reviews simply as positive or negative and not on a sliding scale as MetaCritic does, the series has a freshness rating of 84% based on 43 reviews, only 7 of which are counted as negative. The Rt critics’ consensus says, “A hauntingly beautiful meditation on humanity, ‘Devs” slow unfurling may test some viewers’ patience, but fans of Alex Garland’s singular talents will find much to chew on.

Sonoya Mizuno has been a scene-stealer since her big-screen breakout in “Ex Machina,” from Alex Garland, in 2015. She worked with Garland again on horror adventure “Annihilation” in 2018, a year that also saw her score with “Crazy Rich Asians” and Netflix limited series “Maniac.” Now, she and Garland are teaming up for a third time — in her first lead role — in FX on Hulu’s “Devs.” In the sci-fi/thriller, Mizuno plays computer engineer Lily Chan, who gets sucked into investigating her boyfriend’s mysterious disappearance, only to unravel a bigger mystery about the company for which she works.

For a cautionary tale about not seeing the trees for the forest, “Devs” wields a powerful hallucinatory effect. Methodically paced and meticulously built, Alex Garland’s latest hard stare into the tech world’s black moral abyss can feel like you’re caught in a loop, overhearing engineers repeat the same ominous jargon and catching a glimpse of the same giant doll hovering over Silicon Valley’s redwoods.
The setting, the subject, the show — it’s all a bit cultish, both in the intensely eerie religious parallels the story evokes and in the cult fandom most likely to appreciate another of Garland’s mind-bending projects. The writer-director pulled double duty on every episode of “Devs,” and he remains in the same esoteric territory that divided “Annihilation’s” audience, but that’s not a bad thing. In fact, all of the above are very good things that make up a very good show.

It’s official: Alex Garland is coming to television. FX announced Friday morning that the “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation” director’s first major small screen foray has been ordered for an eight-episode season. The limited series “Devs” is set to premiere in 2019.
The full cast for the series was also revealed, and there are some heavy-hitters in the mix. Sonoya Mizuno, Nick Offerman, Jin Ha, Zach Grenier, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Cailee Spaeny, and Alison Pill make up the impressive roster.
“Devs,” which FX ordered to pilot last March, feels like a spiritual sequel to “Ex Machina” in some respects, if only because of its focus on a mysterious tech company. The official description provided by FX reads as follows:
In ‘Devs,’ a young computer engineer, Lily Chan, investigates the secretive development division of her employer, a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, who she believes are behind the murder of her boyfriend.

FX has greenlit two new limited series, “Shogun” and “Devs,” the cable channel announced during the Television Critics Association summer 2018 press tour Friday.
The 10-episode series “Shogun” is based on James Clavell’s novel of the same name. Set in feudal Japan, the story follows a mysterious female samurai and the shipwrecked English sailor John Blackthorne. Other key characters include Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.
“The story of Shōgun has captivated audiences since James Clavell first released his epic novel more than 40 years ago,” FX Networks CEO John Landgraf said. “The themes of an outsider encountering a new culture are as relevant today as then.”
