Welcome to this brand-new feature here on Nerdly, where one of our comic gurus, Ian Wells, delves into comics history and dissects Comics Interview, the long-running journal of interviews and criticism from David Anthony Kraft.
Up Front With Dak
From this point forward I will be referring to David Anthony Kraft as Dak. He kicks things up this month by saying how well-received the first issue was. So well received in fact that starting with this very issue Comics Interview will be going monthly! The new monthly schedule will result in some fine-tuning issue by issue for what articles appear. One idea he has already is to have colourists and letters rotate month to month. In this issue the Mark Evanier interview doubles up as writer and editor feature, also an inker interview is absent. Dak makes the point to say everyone working on Ci with him is doing so...

Star Wars Tales is a quarterly anthology series published by Dark Horse from 1999 to 2005. Each issue was 64 pages long and contained a variety of stories, in both number, length, content, and tone. Most stories were considered non-canonical “Infinities” stories unless canonized elsewhere (though of course, now all such stories are deemed non-canonical “legends”). In the course of its six year run, Star Wars Tales featured stories from dozens of different creators, covering numerous facets of the Star Wars universe, from serious, thoughtful tales to comedic ones to straight-up fan-demanded “what if?” type stories. Here are ten of the best, entertaining in their own right but also representative of the breadth of content available in this series (all of which are currently available to subscribers of Marvel Unlimited, and were earlier collected into six trade collections that can probably still be found on Amazon and the like).

As it turns out, she had been giving his location away to Robotnik’s various badniks and now Silver Sonic, who is based on Sonic 2‘s Mecha Sonic. Breezie then reveals in a somewhat tragic twist that she was out on the streets without a job or a home. Sonic #268 begins a four part tournament arc that has been almost two decades in the making.
The story opens on a bygone battle between Sonic and the old Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad (Referred to as the “S6” for now on) of Coconuts, Scratch, Grounder, and a woman named Breezie, who happens to be a double agent for Eggman. The Sherlock Holmes played by Benedict Cumberbatch is the most brilliant problem solver on television. The Sherlock Holmes played by Jonny Lee Miller in Elementary comes pretty close, but I give the edge to the “high functioning” sociopath with the “mind palace” in his head. (Now that’s some Intelligence.) The third and final installment of Sherlock’s third season challenged the master detective with a most vexing conundrum, a test of both imagination and morality, one that has become increasingly popular in our hero fiction of late: To kill or not to kill.

The first trailer for one of this summer’s mammoth blockbuster, X-Men: Days of Future Past, launched last year, giving an undeniably epic first look at director Bryan Singer’s return to the franchise.
Singer has taken to Twitter to announce that something ‘Big’ will be released this coming Monday, teasing a great little preview ahead of whatever we have coming. Could it be the second trailer? (Quite probably.)
The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-men: Days Of Future Past. The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future.

According to reports, 21st Century Fox, a portfolio of cable, broadcast, film, pay TV and satellite assets spanning six continents, may develop a major motion picture that will combine two of Marvel Comics greatest superhero teams:
various reports indicate that Fox is planning to "...combine the 'Fantastic Four' and the 'X-Men' for an 'Avengers'-style movie."
Fox creative consultant Mark Millar previously confirmed that the "Ff" and "X-Men" existed in the same movie universe, but for the time being both properties will remain as stand-alone film franchises.
Marvel Comics' "Fantastic Four vs. the X-Men", published in 1987, written by Chris Claremont and illustrated by Jon Bogdanove/Terry Austin, followed the quest to find an effective medical treatment for dying "X-Men" member 'Kitty Pryde'.
Along the way, the 'Fantastic Four' and the 'X-Men' come into conflict with each other, as a sinister secret regarding 'Fantastic Four' origins come to light.

2013 is nearly done, but not without a couple more comic book movie rumors kicking around under the good ol' gossip tree. And it seems one of them has already been debunked... First up, financial site The Motley Fool reported on Boxing Day that Fox was working on an X-Men/Fantastic Four crossover movie that will be based on the 1987 comic run, "Fantastic Four vs. the X-Men." What is that run all about? Here's the Wikipedia synopsis: Written by longtime Uncanny X-Men writer Chris Claremont, pencilled by Jon Bogdanove, and inked by Terry Austin, the series revolves around the quest to find an effective medical treatment for the dying X-Man, Kitty Pryde. Along the way, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men come into conflict with each other, and what appears to be a sinister secret regarding the Fantastic Four's origin comes to light. Okay, cool concept and it seemingly fits into Fox's plans,...

Uncanny X-Men 108-109, 111-143 (1977-1981)
Writer: Chris Claremont
Penciller/Co-plotter: John Byrne
Inker: Terry Austin,
Colorist: Glynis Wein
Publisher: Marvel
Along with Frank Miller’s run on Daredevil, Chris Claremont’ work on Uncanny X-Men during the late 1970s and 1980s was the most innovative and creative Marvel Comics title. But the comic was at its peak of brilliance when both Chris Claremont and John Byrne were working together on the book. They created characters, concepts, and storylines that creative teams have been riffing off for decades since. Without Claremont and Byrne’s Uncanny X-Men, there would be no Grant Morrison’s New X-Men, no Whedon/Cassaday Astonishing X-Men, and no X-Men films. Their run was a perfect mix of interesting concepts, compelling characters, and beautiful sequential storytelling. With loads of subplots, Uncanny X-Men sometimes seemed like a soap opera, but at times it had the gravitas of a Greek tragedy.

For those unsatisfied with last week’s sneak peek, Bryan Singer has delivered as promised the first trailer for X-Men: Days of Future Past, giving us our first proper look at next year’s hugely anticipated blockbuster.
One of the biggest reasons that it’s so anticipated, of course, is that Singer is reuniting the cast of X-Men: First Class with that of the original X-Men trilogy, and that is definitely worthy of the excitement and buzz surrounding the sequel.

With its release set for May 2014, X-Men: Days of Future Past has long been one of the most anticipated blockbusters of next year.
Bryan Singer makes a welcome return to the franchise, bringing together the casts of the original franchise and its First Class reboot for what promises to be an epic movie filled with action and adrenaline-fuelled tension.
The lion’s share of things seen from the film so far have been set photos, with the first teaser posters arriving only recently out of Comic-Con. And now the first official image has landed online, giving a glimpse at Hank McCoy / Beast, Professor Charles Xavier, and Logan / Wolverine.
Whilst the official synopsis remains under wraps, the original arc’s synopsis is all we have to go on for an indication of the plot:

Chris Claremont will be doing "a little consultation" for X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The veteran writer will also be returning to comics for a special to celebrate X-Men's 50th anniversary.
Claremont was asked about his impressions of the 20th Century Fox film - which is based on his classic two-issue storyline - by MTV Geek.
"Of all the arcs that I wrote, that's probably the most popular with fans," he said. "I've been asked to kind of, maybe be around for a little consultation. I won't have a lot of input at all, but it's nice that they asked.
"I'm looking forward to seeing it on screen. It was fun to write, and fun to see what John Byrne and Terry Austin did, and now we get to see what it's like on the big screen. So it will be fun."

With "The Wolverine" in theaters this year and "X-Men: Days of Future Past" hitting the big screen next May, now is a great time to discuss the work of writer Chris Claremont. The writer, who guided the X-Franchise from 1975 to 1991, was responsible—along with undeniable help from artists Frank Miller and John Byrne—for penning the storylines that served as the jumping off point for the two feature films. MTV Geek caught up with Claremont at Wizard World Chicago, where he revealed that he's been asked to play a small role in next year's mutant movie.

Bryan Singer’s return to the X-Men franchise next year with X-Men: Days of Future Past is naturally something we’ve been excited about for a while. Especially since the storyline is set to bring together the cast of both the original X-Men films and X-Men: First Class.
Having taken the movie with them to Comic-Con over the weekend, Fox have now released the first two character posters online, giving us a look at Magneto and Professor X, past crossing future.
The official synopsis for the movie remains under wraps, but we know the film is based on the comic book arc of the same name, which follows the following plot:

Bryan Singer has taken to Twitter in the run-up to production on "X-Men: Days of Future Past," the pseudo-sequel to the ‘60s-set "X-Men: First Class." Singer is taking over directorial duties from Matthew Vaughn, although it should be noted that Singer effectively started this recent superhero movie craze with the first two "X-Men" films (he was unceremoniously replaced for the third film by Brett Ratner). While Singer's tweets so far have been mysterious and behind-the-scenes-y, on Friday he did break with a fairly big photo -- the first shot of Ellen Page's return to the franchise as Kitty Pryde aka Shadowcat, the mutant who can "phase" through solid objects. Meow! Page depicted Pryde in that third "X-Men" movie, "X-Men: The Last Stand," and her casting in "X-Men: Days of Future Past" means that Singer is keeping the continuity from all the movies, including the ones he didn't direct, which is pretty cool.

Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past is naturally one of 2014’s most anticipated blockbusters. The film follows on from the impressively successful X-Men: First Class, which rebooted the franchise brilliantly back in 2011.
Singer has been updating us bit by bit in recent months about the increasingly immense cast, and now he’s taken to Twitter once more to share an image of two familiar chairs.

Director Bryan Singer tweeted out a photo of him holding up the script for X-Men: Days of Future Past and on the front is a quote from Charles Darwin called "Origin of the Species." This could very well be the quote that opens up the movie. Here's what it says,
"As new species are formed through natural evolution, others will become rarer and rarer, and finally extinct. The forms which stand in closest competition with those undergoing modification and improvement will naturally suffer most."
Singer's X-Men movies have always opened up with a voiceover from Charles Xavier. Maybe he'll be quoting Darwin this time around. The image came with the folioing tweet:

Fans of Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class have a lot to look forward to with the coming sequel, with director Bryan Singer announcing earlier in the week that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will be reprising their roles from the original films, alongside James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult.
With Stewart and McKellen returning, THR are now reporting that Hugh Jackman is in talks to reprise his role as Logan / Wolverine for the 2014 blockbuster, too.
Jackman had a small but brilliant cameo in First Class – which recently made Adam’s 10 Exemplary Cinematic Cameos list – and we can’t wait to see how Days of Future Past will unfold if Jackman does indeed come on board.
The official synopsis remains under wraps, but in reference to the source material:

The latest X-Men adventure, Days Of Future Past, is shaping up to be somewhat of a school reunion - provided the institution in question is Professor Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. Hot on the heels of word that Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart will be back for the new movie comes the news that Hugh Jackman is also in talks to bring Wolverine back to hang out with the gang once more.Of course, unlike Stewart and McKellen, Jackman has never really left the X-universe, since he had X-Men Origins: Wolverine, popped up for a memorably sweary cameo in First Class and has The Wolverine headed our way next year. With the other two returning, a Jackman presence seems that much more appropriate. We’re guessing he’ll have more to do in the new movie than First Class, with Bryan Singer directing from a Simon Kinberg script. It...

It's should come as no surprise to learn that Hugh Jackman is currently in negotiations to reprise his role as Wolverine in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past. I'm sure Jackman will get the deal he wants and officially sign on to the film. Jackman have been in every X-Men film so far, he even made a great cameo in First Class.
The movie is a sequel to X-Men: First Class, but due to the time travel elements of the story other characters from the previous films will be involved with it as well. Just recently Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen were confirmed to reprise their roles as Charles Xavier and Magneto. Also coming back are James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult. I'm sure Singer is reaching out to several other cast members. I think it would be amazing if they were able to get James Marsden back as Cyclops.

Now that Bryan Singer is directing “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and bringing some old friends with him like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen who portrayed X-Men founder Professor Charles Xavier and mutant leader Magneto, respectively, in the original X-Men movies.
It looks like he’s got another friend coming if all goes well.
Sources at The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that Hugh Jackman is in negotiations to reprise his Wolverine role in the sequel to “X-Men: First Class,” and as you recall Jackman had a cameo in the prequel. James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult are also set to return for the sequel.
Days of Future Past is a classic storyline that unfolded in two issues of Marvel Comics’ Uncanny X-Men in 1981, from writer Chris Claremont and artists John Byrne and Terry Austin.

Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark. Batman and Iron Man. One man, a morose orphan on an eternal mission of vengeance; the other, a brilliant gadfly turned industrial superhero. The two heroes sit at the upper tier of their respective universes; they have also become, in the modern age, arguably the most popular superheroes in the world, headlining billion-dollar film franchises. (To a certain extent, whenever Robert Downey Jr. appears in public now, he is playing Tony Stark.) Today, Batman and Iron Man face off in a blazing semi-final match. Who will advance to the final round? The decision…is up to you.

Round 2 of our Superhero Showdown bracket game continues today with four soul-searing face-offs between eight of our most beloved costumed crimefighters, each of them in their own way deserving of the title “Greatest Superhero Ever.” Famous anti-gun advocate Batman battles the Punisher, a rabid pro-gun proponent. Star-crossed lovers Wolverine and Jean Grey will decide once and for all which X-Man is the best X-Man. Wonder Woman and Captain America will battle for the honor of the island of Themyscira and the Stars and Stripes, respectively. Lastly, Iron Man and Deadpool will match weaponry and witticisms. (“Weaponry and Witticisms” would be...

It wasn’t long ago that Tom Hardy was reported as the new villain in the next Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises. Now rumours abound as to which comic baddie he might play. According to Ain’t it Cool News, a source is saying it could be Dr Hugo Strange. And as crazy Batman villains go, this one’s pretty high up the list. Strange is a scientist who veers towards the delusional side of things. His madness takes a darker turn when he becomes obsessed with The Batman, specifically who he is and how to kill him.
The character of Strange is most famous for his role in the graphic novel Prey, written by Doug Moench with illustration by Paul Gulacy and Terry Austin. As story-lines go, this one pretty much fits as a tie-in to the original Dark Knight film as it begins with Gary Oldman as...

Nothing like a good Batman rumor on a Saturday afternoon. This rumor, however, is one we've been hearing for a while. In November, we ran a story speculating [1] that Tom Hardy would be playing Dr. Hugo Strange, "a genius, mad scientist who becomes obsessed with Batman, learns his secret identity and ends up dressing up like him," in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. One of Strange's most famous roles is in the Batman: Prey storyline, written by Doug Moench and drawn by Paul Gulacy and Terry Austin from late 1990 to early 1991. It begins with a task force, headed by Commissioner Gordon, assigned to hunt Batman and devolves into Dr. Strange dressing up as, and psychologically toying with, Batman and Bruce Wayne once he figures out his identity. Interesting. Doesn't Batman become a fugitive to be "hunted" at the end of The Dark Knight? Sounds like a good place to start.

There's a rumor that's been floating around cyber space for a little over a week that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises will be based on the comic book Batman: Prey. Today AICN confirmes that this rumor may actually be true saying,
It seems that Chris & Jonathan Nolan and that David Goyer have been digging deep for the villain. In fact, Batman first went up against this guy in 1940 in the pages of Detective Comics. The word is, Tom Hardy is playing Dr. Hugo Strange, who has a bit of an obsession surrounding The Batman. Strange how common that seems to be in Gotham. In fact - it seems that Nolan and crew are exploiting that great Prey arc that was written by Doug Moench and illustrated by the great Paul Gulacy and Terry Austin - and ran from September of 1990 to February 1991.
Knowles also made a point to...

According to new reports, director Christopher Nolan's third 'Batman' feature "The Dark Knight Rises", may be based on the DC Comics series "Legends Of The Dark Knight", specifically the story arc "Prey", from issues # 11-15, by the creative team of Doug Moench, Paul Gulacy and Terry Austin.
The "Prey" stories, including an appearance by 'Catwoman' were collected in a 1992 trade paperback.
"...a new new psychiatrist in 'Gotham City', 'Dr. Hugo Strange' is obsessed with 'Batman', convincing the mayor to prepare a special task force to capture 'The Dark Knight' with 'Commissioner Gordon' as its head.
"Gordon deploys the overzealous 'Sgt. Max Cort' to lead the task force. Later, it is found that Strange hates the Batman because he loves what the Batman does, becoming 'a creature of the night'.
"Strange deduces the Batman's identity and plays psychologically with him by placing life-like mannequins of his parents in 'Wayne Manor' with audio tapes.

It is with profound personal regret that I report comics legend Dick Giordano died this morning.
The man who guided two comics companies, Charlton and then DC, to greatness and served as collaborator, friend and mentor to more people than I'd have capacity to recall in a week – Neal Adams, Dennis O'Neil, Jim Aparo, Joe Rubinstein, Terry Austin, Steve Ditko, Frank McLaughlin, Klaus Janson, Al Milgrom, Bob Layton, Steve Skeates, and every young artist, writer and editor who passed through Continuity Associates and DC Comics during his tenure at those companies, to name but a very few. His own gifts as an editor and artist were nothing short of breathtaking.
Dick always defended creative freedom and aesthetic opportunity, sometimes putting him heads-on with management powers, often representing not his own work but that of the editors in his charge, most certainly including myself, for which I will be forever grateful.

The classic military sci-fi comic “Alien Legion” is moving forward as a film adaptation over at Disney with producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
"Alien Legion has been optioned for some time," confirmed “Alien Legion” co-creator Carl Potts in an interview with USA Today. "The script is currently in its third rewrite."
"Bruckheimer's never done a science-fiction [movie] before,” Potts continued. “So that challenge, I think, is something that would hold his interest. The success they've had with blending CGI and live-action characters in ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ series could translate easily to an ‘Alien Legion’ film."
In a recent interview over at HeyUguys, Derek Haas (“Wanted”) revealed that he and his writing partner Michael Brandt (“3:10 to Yuma”) are rewriting the current draft of “Alien Legion” for Bruckheimer and Disney.
