I have to THINK to get out of here?!

They are trapped in a place with strangers, killers, weapons, bodies, traps, or nothing. (Or maybe even cherub-penis buttons everywhere.) It's usually a mystery and for better or worse, they must test their survival skills and think their way out.

Director: Vincenzo Natali | Stars: Nicole de Boer, Maurice Dean Wint, David Hewlett, Andrew Miller

Votes: 247,787 | Gross: $0.50M

A mainstay for lovers of this genre. A B-movie and a bit cheezy, but wonderful for those who like to problem solve while watching movies. Perfect intro movie if you've never seen this kind. (As long as you don't mind a little gore.)

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 62%, Audience 76%

Director: Andrzej Sekula | Stars: Kari Matchett, Geraint Wyn Davies, Grace Lynn Kung, Matthew Ferguson

Has the same format as first movie but without as much of the "slice and dice" mechanical traps and more of a sci-fi spin. Satisfying if you like this genre.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 45%, Audience 36%

Solid movie based on the Cube formula. This time we see some of the outer workings of the cube. If you liked Cube, try this one too.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics --, Audience 43%

Director: Chris Shadley | Stars: Melissa Joan Hart, William Lee Scott, John Terry, James C. Victor

Votes: 14,275

Very low budget with some questionable acting, but kinda interesting. ...That is if you don't mind watching a group of hostages in a room talking through their dilemma. Ending could have been better.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics --, Audience 29%

Not Rated | 91 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

Six strangers wake up in cells in an underground facility. Their captive decides their fate with the roll of a die.

Director: Dominic James | Stars: John Pyper-Ferguson, Emily Hampshire, Caterina Murino, Elias Koteas

Votes: 2,731

Another B-movie but solid. Doesn't have the extreme thrills of the Saw movies, but a not horrible addition to the "trapped and thinking" movies.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics --, Audience 20%

R | 93 min | Mystery, Thriller

Four individuals sign up for a psychological research study only to discover that they are now subjects of a brutal, classified government program.

Director: Kinji Fukasaku | Stars: Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, Tarô Yamamoto, Chiaki Kuriyama

Votes: 194,546

A class of 14 year-olds are on an island and must fight to the death--leaving only one survivor. There's no mystery involved, but it's a top example of critical-thinking survival skills in a movie. If you like spending time figuring out how YOU would survive when you watch movies, then this is my top pick for you. *Extreme gore warning.

Additional warning: Don't watch if you can't handle teen bloodshed.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 86%, Audience 89%

8. Haze (2005)

Not Rated | 49 min | Horror, Mystery

A man wakes up to find himself locked in a cramped concrete maze of corridors, in which he can barely move. He doesn't remember why he is there or how he got there. He has a terrible stomach injury and is slowly bleeding to death.

Director: Shin'ya Tsukamoto | Stars: Shin'ya Tsukamoto, Takahiro Murase, Takahiro Kandaka, Masato Tsujioka

Votes: 3,104

The visceral epitome of a claustrophobic trapped movie. A man suffers in a cramped, dark maze with a fair amount of torture, while the viewer and him are trying to figure out what the hell is going on. Some of the crawling is a bit monotonous, but the ending "revelation to the mystery" was pretty satisfying. It's short at 49 min but prepare to have your guts churning throughout.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics --, Audience 78%

9. Shadow Puppets (2007)

Not Rated | 103 min | Horror, Thriller

Eight strangers with no memories find themselves trapped in an abandoned facility. As they desperately try to find answers and escape, their own Shadows attempt to consume them from the darkness.

Director: Michael Winnick | Stars: James Marsters, Tony Todd, Marc Winnick, Natasha Alam

Votes: 2,673

A promising beginning disintegrated when the mystery was revealed. It felt a bit too absurd to enjoy. Like sci-fi channel movie fodder we've seen too many times. Watch at your own risk.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics --, Audience 22%

10. The Method (2005)

115 min | Drama, Thriller

68 Metascore

7 Spanish top corporate job candidates are left in a room and informed on computer screens about their tasks and that one of them is an observer. Let the psyching begin.

Director: Marcelo Piñeyro | Stars: Eduardo Noriega, Najwa Nimri, Eduard Fernández, Pablo Echarri

Votes: 12,165 | Gross: $0.01M

Ok, they aren't exactly trapped, but they must stay in the room and solve psychological tests (including who the mole in the room is) in order to win a prized job placement. Highly cerebral, it's mostly just watching people talk but if you like trying to figure out mind games with the characters than this is a great movie to try.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 71%, Audience 69%

11. Breathing Room (I) (2008)

Directors: John Suits, Gabriel Cowan | Stars: Ailsa Marshall, Michael McLafferty, David Higlen, Brad Culver

Low budget with some painful acting. The idea of the conclusion was promising but it wasn't that fun getting there. A movie for die hard fans of "trapped and thinking" movies.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics --, Audience 17%

12. Unknown (I) (2006)

Not Rated | 85 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

44 Metascore

Director: Simon Brand | Stars: Jim Caviezel, Greg Kinnear, Bridget Moynahan, Joe Pantoliano

Votes: 31,468 | Gross: $0.14M

A sleeper and quite a good movie. More action than some of these movies tend to have. The characters wake up trapped in bizarre circumstances and can't even remember who the "good guys" and "bad guys" are. Great cast, good plot. One to catch when it makes the rounds on cable.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 38%, Audience 54%

13. The Hole (2001)

R | 102 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller

Four teenagers at a British private school secretly uncover and explore the depths of a sealed underground hole created decades ago as a possible bomb shelter.

Director: Nick Hamm | Stars: Thora Birch, Desmond Harrington, Daniel Brocklebank, Laurence Fox

Votes: 48,275

Very solid film about youths trapped in a bomb shelter. Less of an exercise in critical thinking than many of the movies on this list. It's not a movie about figuring out how to get out, but about who is telling the truth after the fact. Decent film.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 50%, Audience 53%

14. House of 9 (2005)

R | 90 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

Nine strangers, with no apparent connection between them are abducted: drugged, kidnapped and sealed in a house together.

Director: Steven R. Monroe | Stars: Kelly Brook, Dennis Hopper, Hippolyte Girardot, Ashley Walters

Votes: 10,770

One of my favorite goosebump endings in a movie but took a long time getting there. I attempted a re-watch recently and wasn't able to get through it. A pretty center-of-the-road example of this kind of movie.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics --, Audience 37%

15. Inshite miru: 7-kakan no desu gêmu (2010)

107 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

Ten people who agree to take the same lucrative "job" find themselves locked in an underground complex and forced to play a murder game for seven days.

Director: Hideo Nakata | Stars: Kin'ya Kitaôji, Nagisa Katahira, Shinji Takeda, Masanori Ishii

Votes: 1,388

The cheesy B-movie feeling caught me off guard for how much fun I had watching this. It's a bit like a Japanese Agatha Christie who-dun-it murder mystery. Probably a good pick for those who like crime-mysteries.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics --, Audience 30%

16. Eden Log (2007)

R | 98 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

A man wakes up in an underground cave, next to a dead body. He has no memory of how he got there and starts to try and work his way to the surface and escape from the network of tunnels, which seem to be some kind of ancient civilisation.

Director: Franck Vestiel | Stars: Clovis Cornillac, Vimala Pons, Zohar Wexler, Sifan Shao

Votes: 6,848

The synopsis for this movie sounds phenomenal. But somehow, the tone and pacing during viewing were obnoxious enough for me to end up fast-forwarding through to the better parts. Bleak, frustrating, with some neat ideas.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 43%, Audience 33%

17. Fermat's Room (2007)

Not Rated | 89 min | Mystery, Thriller

4 mathematicians are invited to solve an enigma. Once there, they're locked in a mechanically shrinking room and given 1 minute to solve each puzzle via cellphone while also figuring out why they're there.

Directors: Luis Piedrahita, Rodrigo Sopeña | Stars: Alejo Sauras, Elena Ballesteros, Lluís Homar, Santi Millán

Votes: 22,820

Genius dinner guests trapped in a slowly closing-in room while having to solve enigmas and the greater problem of why they are there. Would have been more thrilling if some of these enigmas weren't mainstay puzzles that are already well known, even to non-geniuses such as myself. Still, solid entry in this genre.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 70%, Audience 54%

18. Oldboy (2003)

R | 120 min | Action, Drama, Mystery

78 Metascore

After being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must track down his captor in five days.

Director: Park Chan-wook | Stars: Choi Min-sik, Yoo Ji-tae, Kang Hye-jeong, Kim Byeong-Ok

Votes: 636,500 | Gross: $0.71M

A cult classic for a reason. Technically doesn't belong on this list, but it includes being trapped and figuring out why. Has iconic visuals & scenes that get under your skin and never quite leave. The fun, fascinating ride ends with a brilliant explanation. Clever plot. Can't recommend it enough.

Note: Skip the American (2013) remake--or at least watch it AFTER this one. Note 2: If you skip foreign movies because you don't like reading subtitles, go ahead & watch the english-dubbed version which isn't too bad.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 80%, Audience 94%

19. Predators (2010)

R | 107 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

A group of elite warriors parachute into an unfamiliar jungle and are hunted by members of a merciless alien race.

Director: Nimród Antal | Stars: Adrien Brody, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace, Alice Braga

Votes: 244,042 | Gross: $52.00M

*Unfamiliar with the franchise, I can only comment on the merit of this movie as a stand-alone.

"Bad guys" from every walk of life are corralled and hunted by the predators. It's thoroughly fun watching these characters work together or sabotage each other in turn. Plenty of opportunity to speculate what YOU might do to survive. Surprisingly, Adrien Brody as a muscle-bound hero/commando works in spades. Fun, interesting.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 64%, Audience 51%

20. As the Gods Will (2014)

TV-MA | 117 min | Adventure, Horror, Sci-Fi

A group of high school students are forced to play a game of death without knowing who, why or how.

Director: Takashi Miike | Stars: Shôta Sometani, Nijirô Murakami, Ryunosuke Kamiki, Nao Ômori

Votes: 8,071

Bizarre, gory, funny, wonderful! A sometimes wacky but absolutely pure example of a thinking-to-escape film. It's over the top blood & violence may have some reeling, but those more accustomed to movie-gore will probably have a knee-slapping good time.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics --, Audience 47%

21. Pandorum (2009)

R | 108 min | Action, Horror, Mystery

Two crew members of a spaceship wake up from hypersleep to discover that all their colleagues are missing. Despite this, it appears that they are not alone.

Director: Christian Alvart | Stars: Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Cam Gigandet, Antje Traue

Votes: 159,609 | Gross: $10.33M

An interesting mystery with a bit more focus on Sci-fi & monsters. Includes the ever-enjoyable Dennis Quaid. Doesn't feel like a think-to-escape film, though it is.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 28%, Audience 48%

22. Dark City (1998)

R | 100 min | Fantasy, Mystery, Sci-Fi

66 Metascore

Director: Alex Proyas | Stars: Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt

Votes: 212,426 | Gross: $14.38M

An unforgettable, original film which may have been made a bit before it's time-- considering the advances in film technology. Fascinating mystery with some wonderful brain-stretching mental aerobics. Truly unique.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 74%, Audience 84%

23. Identity (2003)

R | 90 min | Mystery, Thriller

64 Metascore

Stranded at a desolate Nevada motel during a nasty rain storm, ten strangers become acquainted with each other when they realize that they're being killed off one by one.

Director: James Mangold | Stars: John Cusack, Ray Liotta, Amanda Peet, John Hawkes

Votes: 267,430 | Gross: $52.16M

Well written, fun, interesting throughout, with an exciting urgent pace that never lets up. Clear and well crafted use of many characters. Some may find the mystery reveal extremely satisfying being somewhat fantastical but faithful to the story's own rules. This action thriller is definitely a "thinking" movie.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 62%, Audience 75%

24. Triangle (2009)

R | 99 min | Fantasy, Mystery, Sci-Fi

Five friends set sail and their yacht is overturned by a strange and sudden storm. A mysterious ship arrives to rescue them, and what happens next cannot be explained.

Director: Christopher Smith | Stars: Melissa George, Joshua McIvor, Jack Taylor, Michael Dorman

Votes: 129,962

Well planned, clever; the kind of movie you want to re-watch immediately to see what you hadn't picked up during the first viewing. Has a couple unnerving visuals which may stay with you. Top scores for repeat viewing.

PROTIP: Afterward, check out the IMDb boards to get a better handle on what is going on & why.

25. Exam (2009)

Not Rated | 101 min | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

Director: Stuart Hazeldine | Stars: Adar Beck, Gemma Chan, Nathalie Cox, John Lloyd Fillingham

Votes: 125,440

A critical-thinker's wet dream. No horror, moderate amount of danger, and a test for a coveted job. The exam AND the job both being an enigma. One of the few movies on this list where the objective is NOT to exit the room. Sounds slow, but builds tension magnificently. If you pride yourself on your critical thinking skills and your ability to think up MacGyver-like workarounds, don't miss this one.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 63%, Audience 57%

26. Symbol (2009)

Not Rated | 93 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Mystery

A man wakes up in a white room empty other than buttons on the walls, he must find out which button to push to get what he wants.

Director: Hitoshi Matsumoto | Stars: Hitoshi Matsumoto, David Quintero, Luis Accinelli, Lilian Tapia

Votes: 4,455

Defying explanation, this film is a somewhat comedy in which a man finds himself trapped in an empty white room. Seemingly endless buttons on the walls (which turn out to be cherub penises--no joke) each do something when pressed. The trick is to figure out which buttons may help him escape and how exactly to use them. Fun, funny. Turns into something quite philosophical in the end. A must watch for lover's of the truly bizarre.

Note: Part of the story involves a slow & seemingly unrelated story about a luchador in Mexico. Fast forward through all of these scenes except the last one. Trust me.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics --, Audience 76%

Director: Tarsem Singh | Stars: Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, Vincent D'Onofrio, Colton James

Votes: 109,161 | Gross: $61.33M

Less of an escape-through-thinking movie, but kept on the list for the magnificent spectacle of the "trap" J-Lo gets stuck in--namely the bad guy's mind, richly and deftly brought to life by director Tarsem Singh.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 46%, Audience 57%

28. Saw (2004)

If you appreciated "Saw" and know what to expect, you won't be disappointed. Intro'd Donnie Wahlberg's character who was memorable & fun to cheer on. (Yeah, that Donnie from New Kids on the Block.) *Extreme gore warning.

Director: Darren Lynn Bousman | Stars: Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Angus Macfadyen, Bahar Soomekh

Slightly lackluster addition to the franchise, with a clever ending that makes up for it. As all Saw movies, masterly applies misdirection. *Extreme gore warning.

31. Saw IV (2007)

R | 93 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

Despite Jigsaw's death, and in order to save the lives of two of his colleagues, Lieutenant Rigg is forced to take part in a new game, which promises to test him to the limit.

Director: Darren Lynn Bousman | Stars: Tobin Bell, Scott Patterson, Louis Ferreira, Costas Mandylor

Votes: 164,928 | Gross: $63.30M

Least memorable film of the franchise, with the exception being the revelation of what becomes of Jigsaw. Still more than enough fun for any gore and escape fans. *Extreme gore warning.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 17%, Audience 62%

32. Saw V (2008)

Votes: 137,724 | Gross: $56.75M

Like Saw II, the plot line of a group of people working together (or against each other) added quite a bit of fun. Perfect if you'd like to speculate what you might do in a team/enemies environment. *Extreme gore warning.

Rotten Tomatoes: Critics 12%, Audience 52%

33. Saw VI (2009)

34. Saw 3D (2010)

R | 90 min | Horror, Mystery

24 Metascore

Director: Kevin Greutert | Stars: Tobin Bell, Costas Mandylor, Betsy Russell, Cary Elwes

Votes: 109,772 | Gross: $45.71M

Last film in the franchise. Includes interesting plot, gut churning traps and forgotten characters. The 3D element doesn't translate well to the smaller screen, adding some over the top gore that looked downright silly. Guts and body parts flying straight toward the camera abound. Also quite a bit of attention to backstory which those uninitiated into the franchise may find boring. Suited best for fans who want to see how the whole story ends. *Extreme gore warning.

A personal favorite; a story of a family trying to survive and escape a home invasion. Twists, turns, and exceptional critical thinking abound. Realistic seeming traps and escapes. Director: Frank Merle | Stars: Malcolm McDowell, David Dastmalchian, Paige Howard, Michael DeLorenzo

Votes: 1,422

An uninspired entry which even Malcolm McDowell couldn't save. Less about figuring out how to escape than mind games of who to trust. You could do worse than watching this movie, but you certainly could do a lot better.

Votes: 66,185

Bizarrely entertaining considering the entire movie is made up of a large cast standing in one spot and debating which characters should be executed (employing trickery, begging etc.) Well-paced. A second viewing convinced me it was more deeply analytical than I'd first thought. Absolutely fills any need for a trapped-and-thinking movie.

Clever web series where contestants need to solve each room's puzzles-- the contest itself becoming an even bigger mystery. The kind of ultra low budget, high quality show that makes YouTube great.

40. NBC Experiment in Television (1967–1971)
Episode: The Cube (1969)

53 min | Animation, Comedy, Drama

A man is trapped inside a mysterious cube.

Director: Jim Henson | Stars: Richard Schaal, Hugh Webster, Rex Sevenoaks, Jack Van Evera

Votes: 740

Depressing, low quality precursor to today's trapped-and-thinking films. Directed and co-written by Jim Henson, who explores existentialism and personal reality within this odd experimental medium. More miserable than entertaining as we follow the protagonist who eventually craves his own end. Would only recommend for novelty sake.
