Though Italy’s box office for the first eight months of 2018 is down, Italian movies account for a quarter of grosses, up from 17% a year ago, a clear sign of local production vibrancy amid alarming theatrical erosion.
Outside the country, Italian cinema is steadily gaining more international traction after the four Oscar nominations (and one win) scored earlier this year by Luca Guadagnino’s “Call Me by Your Name,” followed by two Cannes competition prizewinners, Alice Rohrwacher’s “Happy as Lazzaro” and Matteo Garrone’s “Dogman,” and strong presences at the Venice and Toronto festivals.
The drop in Italian moviegoers amounts to a 7% drop so far this year. That follows a dramatic 12% box office plunge in 2017 and is forcing producers and distributors to come up with some innovative strategies.
Case in point is Oscar-winner Paolo Sorrentino’s Silvio Berlusconi-themed “Loro,” which was edited into a longer version divided into two installments,...

Envision Media Arts has secured the rights to Keith Ray Putman’s action-horror spec script “Red Ice,” TheWrap has learned. “Red Ice” follows a trucker hauling emergency supplies across the frozen waterways of arctic Canada who must survive an onslaught of mysterious, man-eating creatures. “The ice roads have always been an intriguing, dangerous setting,” said Ema president David Buelow. “Keith’s script puts a very visceral, smart spin on the genre.” Also Read: Sundance Day 5: Park City Filmmakers Use Laughs, Self-Awareness to Reboot the Horror Genre (Video) Envision Media recently financed and produced the film “Freezer,” an Anchor Bay...

Looking back on Freezer, a thriller about a car mechanic (Dylan McDermott) confined in a walk-in freezer by Russian mobsters who believe he stole $8 million from them, I can pinpoint the exact moment when my shoulders sagged and I groaned, “Oh, it’s one of those movies.” The revelation came when, after a tense confrontation between McDermott’s Robert Saunders and an icy femme fatale type (Yuliya Snigir), she walks out, the freezer door slams shut and… we’re left to stare at McDermott’s vacant mug for the next ten minutes.
Yep, Freezer is a single-location thriller (or a claustrocore flick, if you want to get fancy about it), following in the footsteps of movies like Buried (Ryan Reynolds in a coffin), Devil (assorted chumps in an elevator with Satan) and Frozen (not the awesome Disney musical, the less-awesome horror flick about three friends stuck on a ski-lift). This weekend, Chris Pine stars as the iconic, titular spy alongside Kevin Costner in "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit," Kevin Hart and Ice Cube team up in the action-comedy "Ride Along," a quirky, squirrel attempts the biggest heist in squirrel history in "The Nut Job," and a newlywed gives birth to the devil's baby in "Devil's Due."
Based on the character created by bestselling author Tom Clancy, "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" follows the covert agent as he uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy. The latest Jack Ryan adventure traces the agent's beginnings, and stars Chris Pine as the famous spy back when he was just a young CIA analyst. This is the trailer for a new thriller called Freezer, which is about a guy played by Dylan McDermott who is... well, locked in a freezer by the Russian mob. The movie looks absolutely ridiculous in the worst ways. This is one of those films that just makes me ask... why?
A New York City mechanic who is knocked unconscious at his birthday dinner and wakes up to find himself locked inside the restaurant's walk-in freezer. But why he's there - and how he'll survive - will reveal a chilling nightmare of mistaken identity, the Russian mob, a missing $8 million, and a wounded cop (Peter Facinelli) who may hold the key it all. Freezer was filmed in Edmonton Alberta (shout out!) in the snowy wasteland of Canada, so I can relate to the concept of freezing slowly. It's a one-location thriller directed by Mikael Salomon of Hard Rain fame, so if you liked Buried but wished it was colder then you'll likely love Freezer.
Synopsis:
Dylan McDermott stars as Robert Saunders, a New York City mechanic who is knocked unconscious at his birthday dinner and wakes up to find himself locked inside the restaurant's walk-in freezer. It doesn't get much more lazy than this. Sure, we've dealt with isolated, small area films like Buried, but this is getting ridiculous. The first trailer for a film called Freezer just debuted starring Derbal McDillet Dylan McDermott. And unless you're in a coma, you probably already guessed that the film is about a guy, who is stuck in a freezer. But this isn't just any freezer. It's a restaurant walk-in freezer. Of course, he has know idea why he's there at first, but then learns some stuff about the Russian mob, and blah, blah, blah. This seems like the perfect time to announce my own new film Desk, which features me stuck at work for eight hours. I'm writing it as we speak. Should be done any day now. Watch the trailer below for a good laugh. Here's the first trailer for Mikael Salomon's Freezer, originally from Yahoo:...

One way that low-budget thrillers have dealt with the constraints of having less money than their competitors is to keep the action contained to a single room. There was "Phone Booth," then "Buried," and even "Atm." But "Freezer" might take the cake.
"Freezer," as you might imagine, is about a man who is trapped in a bathroom. Okay, we're lying. He's obviously trapped inside a freezer.
But that's just the start of this absurd trailer, which stars Dylan McDermott. Please watch the above preview on the promise that you will watch nothing better today*.
If you'd like to watch 88 more minutes of Dylan McDermott trapped inside a cooling unit, "Freezer" hits VOD, Blu-Ray and DVD on January 21st.
*Not a guarantee.

Happy Birthday, Peter Facinelli! The actor, who’s celebrating his 40th birthday today, seems to be getting better with age.Since he stole our hearts as Mike Dexter in "Can’t Hardly Wait," Peter has become one of Hollywood’s hottest leading men. He’s a fan favorite in the "Twilight" series, playing Dr. Carlisle Cullen, a small town doctor who serves as the patriarch of a clan of vampires. But that's just a small piece of his impressive resume! He’s also had memorable roles on "Six Feet Under," "Damages" and Showtime's Emmy-winning dark comedy, "Nurse Jackie."In 2010, Facinelli started his own production company, Facinelli Films. The company's first film, "Loosies," was released in 2012.The actor's career continues to flourish -- he's starring in upcoming films "Freezer" and "Walter." Facinelli married actress Jennie Garth back in 2001. However, after nearly 11 years of marriage, the couple filed for divorce in 2012. They...

As a lead in the first season of the deranged and deeply creepy drama series American Horror Story, Dylan McDermott has helped paint incredible portraits of terror. Years back he was again and again playing the slightly smug yet handsome love interest in light-hearted films like Home for the Holidays and 'Til There Was You. But thanks to the haunted house show, he now comes off as a darkly dreamy everyman with something to hide. So it's perfect casting that McDermott has been picked to front the upcoming action-thriller Freezer. Penned by Tom Doganoglu and Shane Weisfeld, Freezer focuses on a seemingly everyday guy who is thrown into an extraordinary.and terrifying.circumstance. McDermott will star as Robert, a man who is abruptly kidnapped by Russian thugs and locked inside an industrial freezer for reasons unknown. These merciless men demand he give them the $8 million he has stolen from them.
