Relativity Restructuring Officer, Investment Banker Predict Lively Auction (Exclusive)

27 August 2015 2:05 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Relativity Media’s bankruptcy this summer left nearly 150 creditors hoping to get paid and the future of the studio behind “Limitless” and “Act of Valor” hanging in the balance.

There have been legal filings and lawsuits over unpaid bills, fights over the release of upcoming films, such as the Zach Galifianakis comedy “Masterminds” and the Halle Berry thriller “Kidnapped,” and questions about who will buy the financially distressed company in a planned October auction. The high-profile failure has inspired a wave of negative stories about the management of Relativity and founder Ryan Kavanaugh.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Brian Kushner, the Fti Consulting managing director who was appointed the studio’s chief restructuring officer, and C.J. Brown, the Blackstone senior managing director who is serving as Relativity’s investment banker leading its auction, expressed confidence that the media attention will boost interest in the studio. The company already has »

We Are Your Friends review: A well-rounded drama that engrosses from the off without really hitting any bum-notes along the way. We Are Your Friends review

We Are Your Friends is a new drama based around aspiring DJ Cole Carter (Zac Efron), and his group of friends; a gang of twenty-somethings living life to the full. Set in the San Fernando Valley, which the film tells us is famous for its intense heat, the porn industry and the best sushi in town, We Are Your Friends is a tale of forbidden love and finding the right path in life. The film is directed by Max Joseph, who is mostly known for his work on the TV series Catfish, along with Nev Schulman. He makes his feature-directing debut with We Are Your Friends, and also co-wrote the screenplay with Meaghan Oppenheimer.

Creditors: Relativity’s Speedy Auction ‘Deeply Flawed’ or a ‘Bait-and-Switch’

12 August 2015 1:56 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Updated: The hopes of Relativity Media’s senior lenders to conduct a speedy auction of the bankrupt TV- and film-maker or its assets was greeted with a wave of opposition Wednesday. Unsecured creditors objected to the “deeply flawed” sales process, saying in a legal filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan that the process is “on its face inadequate and diminishes the prospect of a robust auction.” A firm that loaned  money for the post-release publicity of Relativity films called the hurried sale a “bait-and-switch.”

The objections poured in before a Wednesday afternoon deadline, in anticipation of a Friday morning hearing before U.S. bankruptcy judge Michael Wiles. Viacom and Netflix also lodged protests. And the exact nature of another objection remains unknown, because another major lender, Manchester Securities Corp., filed its motion under seal, saying it did not want to reveal proprietary information about Relativity. Manchester is a subsidiary of Elliott Associates, »

Relativity Bankruptcy: Profitable TV Unit Sees Silver Lining in Chapter 11 Drama

12 August 2015 9:57 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Relativity Media is in the eye of a hurricane as a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization plays out in court and the company’s Beverly Hills headquarters amid conflicting agendas among lenders, creditors, investors and the company’s embattled founder, Ryan Kavanaugh.

Across town at the Hollywood offices of Relativity Television, it’s business as usual. Or at least as much as Relativity Television chief Tom Forman can make it in the face of a very big image problem. In fact, he expects the division ultimately to be better off after the bankruptcy reorganization as it will likely lead to more funding or a better strategic partner for the profitable TV arm.

“Everything that was in production is still in production. Everybody who was working for us a month ago is still working for us,” Forman told Variety. “We’re pitching and selling new shows. Unfortunately, the Relativity Media bankruptcy is a »

‘Limitless,’ ‘Catfish’ Expected to Continue Despite Relativity Woes

31 July 2015 4:39 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Relativity Media is in the midst of disruptive financial problems, but several of the most popular TV properties to come from the shop will continue to air, according to people familiar with the programs.

“We will continue to move forward with a robust production slate of scripted and non-scripted shows during the reorganization process,” Ryan Kavanaugh, the entrepreneur who is chief executive of the beleaguered production house, said in a letter posted on the company’s website. “In our television business, ‘Limitless,’ which is based on the Relativity movie starring Bradley Cooper, is slated to debut on CBS’ primetime lineup this fall. And we continue to leverage our MTV ratings hit ‘Catfish’ by developing a number of international versions of the show, as well a planned sequel called ‘Truce,’ which is currently in production.”

This may be the one bright spot in a process that could see Relativity pushed toward auction. »

Relativity Media Files Bankruptcy; Film and TV Units for Sale

30 July 2015 12:10 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Relativity Media — the digital-age entertainment company that claimed clever financing and data analysis could help it unlock the secret to box office riches — filed for bankruptcy protection Thursday against a swarm of disgruntled investors and other creditors. The 11-year-old company that founder Ryan Kavanaugh had styled as a “next-generation global media company” will be sold at auction, a statement from the company said.

The upcoming sale will center on the enterprise’s film and television units. Left outside of the insolvency action are Relativity Sports; Relativity EuropaCorp Distribution, a joint venture with the European film operator; and Relativity Education. All those units will continue on as independent concerns. The company’s fashion operation, M3/Relativity, was shut down this week and its employees laid off Wednesday as part of a pinkslipping of 75 employees.

Kavanaugh and his board proposed the immediate auction of  the company, which stated liabilities of up to $1 billion, »

According to the L.A. Times, his Malibu estate was up for lease at the end of May at a rate of $65,000 for one month.

We know him as the master puzzle-maker, his New York Times byline synonymous with imminent frustration. But away from the newsprint grid, Will Shortz moonlights as a devoted ping-pong player and the founder of the Westchester Table Tennis Center. After being told by a neuroscientist a few years ago that ping-pong has more cognitive benefits than even crossword puzzles, Shortz decided to intensify his commitment to the game: He set out to play it for 1,000 days straight. On Tuesday night, a crowd gathered at the Wttc to celebrate the completion of that goal. To commemorate the occasion, the filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost (the team behind Catfish and Paranormal Activity 3 and 4), screened their new short film about Shortz’s nearly three-year table tennis marathon. Relativity Raises $250 Million From San Francisco Investment Firm

6 April 2015 6:48 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Relativity Media has secured a round of fresh financing from VII Peaks Capital ahead of its long-planned Ipo, sources confirm.

Ryan Kavanaugh’s film and television studio is getting an injection of $250 million in funding from the San Francisco investment management firm, which isn’t a usual source of finance for Hollywood.

The deal follows months in which Relativity made the rounds with hedge funds and investors amid what sources described as a cash crunch at the company. A source close to the company disputed that characterization and said the equity investment was sought as a means of strengthening its balance sheet in preparation for an Ipo sometime in 2016.

“We have executed a deal which will bring significant equity into Relativity ahead of a planned Ipo. Relativity is in a better position as a diversified global media company than ever, and it remains under Ryan’s leadership,” said VII Peaks »
