Beggar Su is the old man who trains Wong-Fei Hung (Jackie Chan) in the drunken fist style in the first Drunken Master, not coincidentally also directed by Woo-ping Yuen, so this film acts as a prequel to the Drunken Master films, explaining how Beggar Su came to be a drunk.
The film starts with Su Qi-Er as a successful and respected general alongside his two best friends Ma (Xiaodong Guo) and his blood-brother Yuan Lie (Andy On). After a thrilling rescue of a kidnapped Imperial prince, Yu is offered a position as governor and advised to send the erratic Yuan into exile. The name Woo-ping Yuen may not sound familiar to general filmgoers, but you don't have to be a martial-arts film fan to have witnessed Master Yuen's contribution to the action movie industry. Best known to the general populace for his contribution to The Matrix and Kill Bill series, Yuen is an international legend due in part to his action/fight choreography and martial arts direction. He's often credited with playing an integral part in action/martial arts star Jackie Chan's career by casting and directing him in the 1978 classic martial arts film Drunken Master.
One would think that with over 40 years of experience under his belt, the 65-year-old Yuen would be ready to rest on his laurels -- not so, as he returns to the director's chair for the first time in almost 15 years with True Legend, a Fantastic Fest 2010 selection that returns to Austin on Friday for a...

Two brothers, one legend. We were asked to exclusively premiere a kick ass set of 8 photos from kung fu master Yuen Woo-Ping's latest martial arts epic True Legend and I just couldn't pass this up, as I really did love this flick. Best of all, these are awesome photos, especially in compliment to the official trailer, and there's even a few behind-the-scenes shots giving us a glimpse of the legend Woo-Ping hard at work. What I loved about the movie is that it's a true epic, the story spans lifetimes and there's a few weird, but awesome, moments, like those involving the "God of Wushu" played by Jay Chou. Check out all 8 new photos below. If you haven't yet, go watch the latest trailer. Seriously, these look great, I really can't wait to see this again! Two brothers, one legend. Indomina Releasing has debuted the official Us trailer on Apple for kung fu master Yuen Woo-Ping's newest martial arts epic True Legend, starring Man Cheuk Chiu, Xun Zhou and Michelle Yeoh. This trailer is such a great sell, too - the way it builds and the music at the end. I can't wait to see this again and add it to my growing martial arts DVD collection, as I'll rewatch it over and over. If you love kung fu, you've got to check this out. Kick ass! True Legend
Stars: Man Cheuk Chiu, Xun Zhou, Michelle Yeoh | Written by To Chi-long | Directed by Yuen Woo-ping
Yuen Woo-ping is considered by most, including myself, to be the absolute daddy when it comes to choreographing a fight scene that will make you salivate like a drunken toddler. The Wachowski brothers played a large part in making him the go-to guy in Hollywood, when they hired him to create some of the most memorable fight sequences ever committed to film for The Matrix Trilogy and this was also instrumental in his hiring for the Kill Bill double bill by Quentin Tarantino. I had the pleasure of writing a massive dissertation at King’s College on whether or not Woo-ping can be considered an auteur and from my research I found that there is a particular style and essence to his fight sequences that really are unrivalled by most other people anywhere in the world.

“True Legend” or “Su Qi-Er” literally translated as “Beggar Su,” marks the return of famed Hong Kong director Woo-ping Yuen to fast-paced fantastical martial arts pulp.
Set against the backdrop of Qing Dynasty China, “True Legend” puts a new twist on the ancient Chinese legend of Su Can (Vincent Zhao), better known as Beggar Su, one of the mystical Ten Tigers of Canton and the martial artist said to be the father of the Drunken Fist style of Wushu martial arts.
The story follows the benevolent Su, a brilliant military general beloved and respected by his troops. After successfully leading a near-suicide mission to rescue a feudal prince, Su’s impressed superior offers him a governorship. He declines, instead choosing to start a family with the love of his life Ying (Zhou Xun) and open a Wushu training school of his own. He entrusts the governorship to his best friend...

St. Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold
Opens: 2010
Cast: Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, David Tennant, Gemma Arterton, Talulah Riley
Director: Oliver Parker, Barnaby Thompson
Summary: A rollercoaster-style treasure hunt for the legendary Fritton’s Gold ensues as the feisty and ever-resourceful schoolgirls of St Trinian’s face their most fearsome establishment rivals yet - the villainous Pomfrey and his sidekicks from the women-hating secret society known as AD1.
Analysis: While it didn't travel much beyond the UK, 2007's reboot of the "St Trinian's" franchise nearly doubled its £7 million production budget in sales in the UK alone - making it one of the top grossing independent British films of the past decade. Reviews were decidedly mixed but generally pretty weak at the time, so the greenlighting of a sequel surprised quite a few.

Hippie Hippie Shake
Opens: 2010
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby
Director: Beeban Kidron
Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.
Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

A new trailer chock full of fights (but short on plot and dialogue, which is not necessarily a bad thing) and two short but very cool TV spots for action master Yuen Woo-ping’s return to directing in the martial arts/fantasy movie “True Legend” have shown up online. If you absolutely need a plot for this thing, you can find that below. It also looks like the film has been pushed back to 2010. Su Qi-Er, a wealthy man living during the Qing Dynasty who loses his fortune and reputation as a result of a conspiracy against him. After being forced out onto the streets, Su dedicates his life to martial arts and reemerges as a patriotic hero known as the “King of Beggars.” Starring David Carradine, Michelle Yeoh, Cung Le, Jay Chou, Xun Zhou, Man Cheuk Chiu, Andy On, Conan Stevens, and Xiaodong Guo. In 1978 he achieved his first directing credit on the seminal Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, starring Jackie Chan, then quickly followed with the similar Drunken Master. The films were smash-hits, launching Jackie Chan as a major film-star. He went on to work with such figures as Sammo Hung in Magnificent Butcher (1979), Yuen Biao in Dreadnaught (1981), Donnie Yen in several films including Iron Monkey (1993), and Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh in several films including Tai Chi Master (1993) and Wing Chun (1994). His work, particularly his action choreography on Fist of Legend (1994), attracted the attention of the Wachowski brothers, who hired him as the kung-fu choreographer on The Matrix (1999). The success of this collaboration, plus his action choreography on the following year's hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, made him a highly sought after figure in Hollywood. He went on to work on the Matrix sequels and Kill Bill (2003). It's been 12 years since Yuen Woo-ping,...

Legendary action choreographer Yuen Woo Ping might be best known for his work on The Matrix and Kill Bill(s), but he's been a noted filmmaker in Hong Kong for decades (see Iron Monkey or Wing Chun for a sample of the man's capabilities). He hasn't spent too much time in Hollywood lately, getting back behind the camera and the kicking for old-school action (and sound effects!) in the period martial arts epic True Legend (Su Qi-er). From China comes True Legend (aka Su Qi-Er), the latest martial arts epic from Yuen Woo-Ping, the fight choreographer on all three Matrix movies and Kill Bill. The film stars Michelle Yeoh (who you'll recognize from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Man Cheuk Chiu as the lead. IMDb lists David Carradine as part of the cast as well as Jay Chou, who is playing Kato in The Green Hornet, as the "God of Martial Arts." It's a tale, kind of like Gladiator, about a wealthy man who loses everything and becomes a true legend, a "King of Beggars." The fights in this look awesome and it reminds me a lot of Jet Li's Fearless. Check it out! At a Wushu event ceremony, a preview containing a fair amount of actual & behind the scenes footage for the upcoming wuxia film New Legend was shown and it has now been made available at the official site. The fact its Yuen Woo Ping’s first solo directing gig in over a decade is cause for celebration and with directorial Kung Fu classics including Iron Monkey and Drunken Master under his belt, we can only expect the action choreography to be top notch. The film features the legendary martial arts folk hero Su Qi-er, also better known as Begger Su and a character frequently portrayed by Ping’s late father Simon Yuen Siu Tin in a few films. Revisiting this character is Wushu maestro Zhao Wen Zhuo (aka Vincent Chiu, Chiu Man Chuk), a role that marks his return to films after his nine year stint on several martial arts-related TV period dramas in China.

Wu-Jing.org has found the first teaser trailer/clip for True Legend by Hong Kong veteran Yuen Woo Ping on the films official website (great menu animation btw…). Forced to live on the street he begins to dedicate his life to martial arts and becomes the master known as King of Beggars.
