Tom Cruise has portrayed unforgettable characters in numerous films, but Top Gun stands out as one of his most iconic performances. Despite his breathtaking stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise and outstanding roles in other movies, Cruise’s portrayal of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun will be remembered for generations to come.
Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell from Top Gun
What makes the movie even more special is the mesmerizing aerial scenes and the way the movie captures the thrill and danger of naval aviation. While the chemistry between Cruise’s character and his fellow pilots adds an extra layer of excitement to the film, it is heartbreaking to think that Cruise might have never starred as Marevrick if it wasn’t for a US Navy flight squad.

Polish film-maker Vita Maria Drygas’s new documentary, Danger Zone, follows ‘dark tourists’ such as Andrew Drury into conflict areas. They talk about adrenaline, desperation – and interviewing Shamima Begum
In 2014, Vita Maria Drygas was filming in a war zone. She had travelled to the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine to pick up footage for a documentary when she spotted a handwritten advert offering “cheap” tours of the frontline. “It was a mindfuck,” says the 39-year-old Polish director over a video call from Warsaw, with quiet intensity.
She found the idea of people buying tickets to the frontline, like a theatre production, profoundly shocking: “It was impossible. I didn’t believe it.” At first, she assumed that the advert was a sick joke or maybe a Russian provocation. But back in Poland, digging around on the internet, she discovered the hidden world of war jollies: “A huge branch of tourism that is very underground.

Composer Lorne Balfe has spent his career working on blockbusters including “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” but even so, Matthew Vaughn’s spy thriller “Argylle,” which features an all-star cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell and Henry Cavill, was one for the books. For a start, the soundtrack incorporates the Beatles’ last-ever record, “Now and Then,” the existence of which Balfe had to keep top secret for over a year until it was finally released last November.
The movie also involved Balfe making an album of cat sounds, provided by Vaughn’s moggy (and Howard’s co-star) Chip. “There were recordings of him while they were filming so we were able to chop it up and make it a percussion library,” says Balfe, a self-confessed dog person. “I’m going to post it on Twitter as a freebie so composers can use it and Chip...

Taking a one-for-us victory lap after one-for-them studio smash “Captain Marvel,” indie duo Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden blow a big, self-indulgent kiss to the late-’80s East Bay with nostalgia-fueled “Freaky Tales.” Berkeley-born Fleck was all of 10 years old in early 1987, when this overstuffed anthology film is set, which explains the wide-eyed way he romanticizes the defining subcultures of the time.
In four distinct but intertwining chapters — populated mostly with fresh faces, plus grizzled-but-gorgeous Pedro Pascal — “Freaky Tales” melds wildly different sectors of the city: There’s the rowdy-yet-respectful Gilman Street punk crowd; the revolutionary Oakland hip-hop scene; the Warriors’ historic victory over the Lakers, in which local basketball legend Eric “Sleepy” Floyd scored a record-setting 29 points in the fourth quarter; and a disturbing spike in neo-Nazi-linked hate crimes, which strangely serves to tie everything else together.

If it takes doing an MCU movie, with all the corporate constrictions that entails, to plunge into the kind of exhilarating creative exorcism that Freaky Tales represents, then bring on the superhero as stepping-stone. Before they made Captain Marvel, longtime filmmaking duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck established their talents with three boldly idiosyncratic indies, Half Nelson, Sugar and Mississippi Grind. But nothing in those distinctive works can prepare you for the kinetic energy, the freewheeling imagination and the righteous battles — we’re talking rap and some serious blade slice-and-dice — of their love letter to the Bay Area and the pop-cultural imprint it left on Fleck as a kid in the ‘80s.
The tales of the title are four chapters all built around the theme of underdog victory, each of them different in texture and tone yet all ingeniously interconnected and all owing something to the big-screen aesthetics of the time.

Taiwan-Japan documentary After the Snowmelt and Filipino fantasy feature Mother Maybe were presented with the Taicca X Cnc Awards at the close of the pitching forum at Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf). Both awards came with a cash prize of $30,000.
Organized by Taiwan Creative Content Agency (Taicca), Tccf’s Pitching event handed out awards worth nearly $200,000. Taicca chairperson Homme Tsai said this was possible as the agency had “actively collaborated with South Korea, France, Japan and the three major telecommunications companies in Taiwan. Our goal is to provide creators with more funding while seeking additional international collaboration opportunities.”
Initially, the event had planned to only hand out one Taicca X Cnc Award, in partnership with French national film agency Cnc, but announced at the end of the ceremony that, due to the high quality of submissions, it would hand out two awards.

The International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam revealed its opening night film and announced competition lineups in two main categories today, completing the program for the upcoming 36th edition of the world’s largest documentary festival.
At a press conference in Amsterdam, A Picture to Remember, directed by Ukrainian filmmaker Olga Chernykh, was announced as IDFA’s opening night film on November 8. The festival, which includes more than 250 films total, runs from Nov. 8-19.
“[A Picture to Remember] presents a deeply personal and essay-style account of the ongoing war in Ukraine and its violent history, seen through the prism of three generations of women: Chernykh herself, her mother, and her grandmother,” IDFA said in a release. “In a bid for connection and intimacy, the filmmaker uses old family films, recordings of conversations, and news reports to bridge the distance between her and her grandmother. The result is a kaleidoscopic and personal film that travels through time fluidly.

I first heard about FX’s “Archer” in the ready room of Vaq-135, a navy squadron who were serving an interminable deployment aboard an aircraft carrier somewhere near Midway Island. (This sounds very much like a humblebrag that Sterling Archer would obnoxiously drop into conversation). It was 2010, and the pilots had lost whatever idealism they’d once had during an endless deployment that had them flying 12-hour missions from the Persian Gulf to Afghanistan. I started hearing the officers stage-whisper “danger zone” whenever one of them got called in to see the commanding officer over some minor fuck-up or summoned to the flight deck in the pitch black of an ocean night.
Now, famously, “Danger Zone” is a Kenny Loggins song that plays a significant role in the homoerotic original recipe “Top Gun,” the urtext of naval aviators. But the way the pilots were saying it suggested they were taking the piss.

Warsaw Film Festival sets out to spotlight a slew of new local releases, from “Anxiety” by Sławomir Fabicki – Oscar-nominated for his short “A Man Thing” – to this year’s opener “Song of Goats” by Andrzej Jakimowski.
The latter, featuring “Eo” star Mateusz Kościukiewicz and set in Greece, will show characters living close to an active volcano, exploring the question of how “each of us is responsible for maintaining our fragile heritage,” says the director.
“We are witnessing a war in a neighboring country [Ukraine], threats from a barbarian empire and rapidly growing populism that is devastating politics. It’s a dreadfully worrying mixture.”
As Poland braces for parliamentary elections on Oct. 15 and the controversy over Agnieszka Holland’s “Green Border” refuses to die down, emotions run high.
“What happened went beyond the accepted framework. There was no shortage of absurdity, like the attempt to force cinema managers to screen propaganda material before the film,...

In Vita Maria Drygas’ doc “Danger Zone,” war is for sale. And there are people who can afford it.
“The very idea of ‘war tourism’ was shocking to me. Armed conflict is not a stage: you don’t buy tickets to watch a show,” she says ahead of the premiere at Warsaw Film Festival.
Produced by Vita Żelakeviciute for Drygas Film Production, “Danger Zone” is co-produced by Next Film and Dogwoof, the latter also handling sales.
She first came across the controversial, world-spanning phenomenon when filming mid-length “Piano” during the Maidan revolution in Ukraine.
“I was surrounded by people who were fighting for their freedom and the future of their country. My focus shifted from merely making a film to actively supporting their cause. Then I saw this ad: someone was offering tours to the frontlines. At first, I thought it was a provocation by the separatists.”

The notion that, 40 years ago, Madonna was a shooting star predestined for the stratosphere is the stuff of pop music myth. The then-twentysomething singer’s demo tape, which included early versions of classics like “Everybody” and “Burning Up,” was rebuffed multiple times before she finally landed a deal with Sire Records, best known for punk and new wave acts like Talking Heads and the Ramones. Madonna became the label’s flagship act, thanks to the slow-burning success of her self-titled album, which finally hit the Top 10 more than a year after its debut and would go on to spend a staggering 165 consecutive weeks on the Billboard chart.
Madonna was so eager to move on from her debut and release her second album, Like a Virgin, that, during an on-air interview with MTV, she publicly hexed her latest single, “Borderline,” hoping it would “fizzle out.” No such luck. The song became...

We here at /Film love a well-placed needle drop. Whether it's the inclusion of Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound of Silence" in "The Graduate" to emphasize the complicated future of the two leads or Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" in "Wayne's World" that inspired audiences everywhere to headbang in their cars, there's an art to the (often very expensive) cinematic needle drop. A song choice can truly make or break the effectiveness of a scene and when done properly, the collaboration between song and screen can become synonymous. "Top Gun" and the Kenny Loggin' song "Danger Zone" now go hand-in-hand with one another, and you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who hears the tin whistle opening of "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion and not immediately think about Jack and Rose in "Titanic."

Tom Whitlock, who wrote the lyrics for the rock anthem “Danger Zone” and the chart-topping love song “Take My Breath Away” for the original Top Gun, winning an Oscar in the process, has died. He was 68.
Whitlock died Saturday at a memory care center in Gallatin, Tennessee, a spokesperson at the Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri, confirmed. He had Alzheimer’s disease, friends told the Springfield News Leader.
Whitlock wrote both Top Gun songs with Giorgio Moroder. Their relationship began when he fixed the brakes on the Italian composer’s Ferrari.
“Danger Zone,” performed by Kenny Loggins, was employed for the opening scene in the Tony Scott-directed, Tom Cruise-starring 1986 action movie, while “Take My Breath Away,” sung by Terri Nunn of Berlin, inspired the filmmakers to shoot additional scenes with Cruise and Kelly McGillis months later.

The Polish film industry is embracing variety and high-profile international collaborations, with a slew of new co-productions already generating buzz among buyers and festival programmers. “More and more established filmmakers, who used to look for collaborators in Romania or Hungary, are now coming to Poland — mostly because we are backed by concrete institutions and because there is money,” says producer Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska of Madants, heading to Berlinale’s European Film Market with “Ultima Thule” and Goran Stolevski’s “Housekeeping for Beginners.”
“Our crews speak English and work abroad. We are visible internationally,” she adds.
Madants is also behind James Napier Robertson’s upcoming Polish-Kiwi title “Joika,” one of six international co-productions backed by the Polish Film Institute in 2022. The shingle’s slate includes Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert’s “Let Me Out” and Agnieszka Smoczyńska’s follow-up to “The Silent Twins,” “Hot Spot.”

“Top Gun: Maverick” is one of the best received movie sequels in years, earning rave reviews from critics and dominating the box office on its opening weekend. Almost everyone seems to agree that it’s a major improvement over the original “Top Gun,” trading in the campy 1980s vibes for a more serious tone (by blockbuster standards). But one thing did not change: the use of Kenny Loggins’ “Danger Zone.”
To many, the synth-heavy song, composed and produced by Giorgio Moroder, is synonymous with “Top Gun,” a sentiment that is apparently shared by Tom Cruise. In a new interview with Vulture, Loggins revealed the moment he learned that his iconic song would be used in the sequel. The singer explained that he actually did not know Cruise in the 1980s, and only met him when they both appeared on a 2016 episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Backstage, Loggins couldn’t help...

This review of “Top Gun: Maverick” was first published on May 12, 2022, after its premiere at Cannes Film Festival.
The young pilots in “Top Gun: Maverick” are warned at one point about a steep aerial climb that will subject them to massive G-force. Their bodies will feel like they weigh 2000 pounds, they are told, with their skulls crushing their spines, and breathing will feel like an elephant is on their chests pressing down on their lungs.
It’s a sensation not unlike the film’s relentless onslaught in its mission to entertain, delight and move audiences; “Top Gun: Maverick” resembles an amusement-park ride in all the worst ways, in that every second feels designed to provoke a response. It’s as much an entertainment machine as a roller coaster.

This holiday weekend’s big (and I mean big) release could set some records at the box office, while already setting one big milestone. It’s a sequel (not a reboot as many websites say) that has had the longest “gestating” time between its original flick. While most “franchise tentpoles” have usually two or three years between entries, here we have a whopping 36 years since the same actor, playing the same character, took to the skies. I’d venture to say that most of this weekend’s audiences weren’t alive when the first one was blasting through the multiplexes (often in malls back in the day). Oh, and that’s not counting its many pandemic delays and rescheduled openings in the last two years. Yes, 80s film fans have had a long wait to return to the “danger zone” in Top Gun: Maverick. So buckle in…
Oh, this flick...

The main title credits to “Top Gun: Maverick” are both surprising and confusing: “Music by Harold Faltermeyer, Lady Gaga and Hans Zimmer. Score produced by Lorne Balfe.”
That may sound like a musical mess, but aside from Gaga, all the players have connections to the original “Top Gun” or each other through previous collaborations. Berlin-based Faltermeyer scored the original 1986 “Top Gun,” winning a Grammy for the instrumental “Top Gun Anthem,” while Zimmer scored four earlier Tom Cruise films including “Rain Man,” “Days of Thunder” and “Mission: Impossible II.”
The London-based Balfe has frequently collaborated with Zimmer on various scores (from “The Dark Knight” to “Dunkirk”), scored “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” for Cruise, and and is currently working with Cruise on “Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning.” The Oscar- and multiple Grammy-winning Gaga penned the new movie’s “Hold My Hand,” already touted as an original song front-runner.

This Article Contains Spoilers For Top Gun: Maverick.
The original Top Gun came out almost exactly 36 years ago, turning Tom Cruise from a rising star into a legitimate superstar and implanting things like shirtless beach volleyball, callsigns, F-14 jets, and the Navy’s Fighter Weapons School into the public consciousness for decades to come.
The movie followed hotshot pilots Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) as they joined the school (known as Topgun), clashed with their commanding officers and fellow trainees (including Val Kilmer’s Tom “Iceman” Kazansky), and experienced tragedy, romance and some of the most dangerous yet exhilarating flying in the world.
Maverick arguably remains Tom Cruise’s most famous role, which is why it’s extraordinary in some ways that it’s taken more than three decades for a sequel to finally go into production. But Top Gun: Maverick is arriving on screens at last,...

Top Gun: Maverick will put Kenny Loggin’s “Danger Zone” back in the spotlight (where it belongs). Here’s how the artist conquered the movie soundtrack world in the 1980s.
“Most musicians would be content to shape the sound of pop in one decade—like how Elvis Presley shook up the ’50s or The Beatles owned the ’60s. But not Kenny Loggins. After helping to invent the supremely chill, lightly funky sound known as ‘yacht rock’ in the ’70s, Loggins went full speed into the ’80s and took the highway to the danger zone of movie soundtracks. The gambit paid off in a big way.”

Another Hollywood legend is joining the Fast and Furious family, and this time it’s West Side Story icon Rita Moreno.
“In an inspired bit of stunt casting, iconic Egot winner Rita Moreno will join the Fast and the Furious franchise family.

It’s rather fitting that the blockbuster that could be Paramount’s biggest box office hit in over a decade is a sequel to “Top Gun,” the film that cemented Tom Cruise’s status as a global movie star and to this day stands as the biggest box office hit of his decades-long career, when adjusted for inflation. When “Top Gun” came out in 1986, Cruise had already had his breakthrough hit with “Risky Business” three years prior. But at a time long before today’s front-loaded box office norm, Cruise wasn’t yet the sort of star who prompted millions to turn out on opening weekend. So on the weekend before Memorial Day in 1986, “Top Gun” opened to 8.1 million from 1,028 theaters, the equivalent of 21.6 million in today’s money. But over the next month, word-of-mouth began to spread. Moviegoers were gushing about the riveting dogfights between the Navy’s top...

The bromance between Tom Cruise and James Corden remains strong… and skybound.
The Top Gun: Maverick star persuaded The Late Late Show host to get back into another plane with him – four years after he encouraged him to jump out of one.
Cruise picked up the Brit, who has revealed he was leaving the late-night world in April, for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the desert, piloting him in a vintage fighter plane for the afternoon.
“I’m very excited that James is doing this,” he says in the 15-minute segment. “Was he the first late-night show I asked? Hell, no. He was just the first one… the only one who said yes.”
Cruise and Corden end up in a dogfight in the classic plane.
Just when Corden thinks he’s survived, Cruise informs him the two will be going up again — this time in a jet fit for modern aerial warfare.

Tom Cruise conquers Cannes with fighter jets, a standing ovation, and a surprise honorary Palme d’Or
Never try to outguess the Cannes Film Festival. The yearly gathering of cinema’s elite has bestowed its top prize, the Palme d’Or, to many groundbreaking international auteurs over the years, like Luis Buñuel, Federico Fellini, and Akira Kurosawa. Recent winners include Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Hirokazu Kore-eda, and Ruben Östlund. Geniuses all, but hardly the bunch that packs ‘em in at the local AMC.
But on Wednesday, Festival Director Thierry Frémaux led the exalted festival right into the Danger Zone. It presented A-list crowdpleaser Tom Cruise with an honorary Palme d’Or at the out-of-competition screening of “Top Gun: Maverick.” The award was said to be unexpected.
The first honorary Palme d’Or was given to Ingmar Bergman in 1997, awarded to correct the fact that the Swedish filmmaker had never won one for a competition title. Five years later Woody Allen won the second honorary Palme, and they’ve...

When "Top Gun" arrived in 1986, it came with one of the most popular movie soundtracks to date, boasting the Oscar-winning single "Take My Breath Away" as performed by the new wave band Berlin, and two absolute bangers by Kenny Loggins, "Playing with the Boys" and "Danger Zone." The "Top Gun" soundtrack hit number one in the U.S. charts for five non consecutive weeks in 1986, was the best selling soundtrack of 1986, and is still largely considered to be one of the best movie soundtracks ever crafted. There were humongous musical shoes to fill for the sequel "Top Gun: Maverick," and...

The Oscar winner for Best Original Song for “A Star Is Born” and the recent winner of the august New York Film Critics Circle’s best actress award for “House of Gucci”, whose recent triumphs include dueting with Tony Bennett at Radio City Music Hall for his final concert and appearing at the 2022 Oscars with Liza Minnelli, has found a new collaborative partner: The United States Air Force.
As with the 1986 Tony Scott version, Joseph Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” is aiming to take over the box office and the airwaves. Back in the day, the “Top Gun Original Motion Picture Soundtrack” hit number one on the album charts, powered by Kenny Loggins’s “Danger Zone” and that year’s Oscar-winner for Best Original Song, Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away.” Both tunes were co-written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock.

If you’re one of the lucky exhibitors or press people attending CinemaCon later this month in Las Vegas, then you’ll be one of the first to see Tom Cruise return to arguably his most iconic role in “Top Gun: Maverick,” TheWrap has learned.
“Top Gun: Maverick,” directed by Cruise’s “Oblivion” collaborator Joseph Kosinski and co-written and produced by his longtime creative partner Christopher McQuarrie, has arguably the most tortured and lengthy release date shuffle of any movie during the pandemic era. Originally scheduled for release on July 12, 2019, it was bumped back (pre-covid) to June 26, 2020. But after that it moved up two days to June 24, 2020, then to pushed back December 23, 2020 (due to Covid concerns), then to July 2, 2021, then November 19, 2021, and now finally to May 27, 2022. That’s a long time to wait to get back to the Danger Zone.

Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci create earworms about eggs and salt. If you’ve been watching Netflix’s new children’s series, “Waffles + Mochi,” then songs like “Crack Me Up” and “Umami” are already embedded in your head. But for the songwriting team, known to most people as the duo Garfunkel and Oates, found the series offered them a whole new opportunity: To cement themselves as individual songwriters — just Riki and Kate — and write and create the exact kind of music they want.
It all started with a song about a tomato. That was the pitch presented to them by series co-creator Jeremy Konner, who’d worked with the two on the Comedy Central comedy “Another Period.” “He, at first, asked us to write a song when he was pitching the show; it was a concept,” Lindhome told IndieWire. “He called us and said, ‘Hey, can you do me a favor?...

So, for Cruise to agree to reprise his star-making role as Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick, a full 34 years after the original no less, there must be something pretty special about the project.
Of course, it helps that Cruise is working again with his frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, with the duo becoming virtually inseparable ever since they first teamed up on Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie over a decade ago. The man behind the most recent installments in the Mission: Impossible series is co-writing the script for Maverick, which is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who Cruise also has previous experience with after making 2013 sci-fi Oblivion together.
