Natasha Lyonne is set to make her feature directorial debut — with a big assist from artificial intelligence.
The “Poker Face” star is teaming up with Brit Marling and renowned computer scientist Jaron Lanier to create “Uncanny Valley,” a “hybrid film” that combines live action and AI. The new flick was announced on Tuesday by Asteria Studios, the self-described “ethical AI film and animation studio” that Lyonne co-founded alongside Bryn Mooser.
“Uncanny Valley,” per a release from Asteria, will be “powered by ‘Marey,’ the first clean foundational AI model developed by the engineers at Moonvalley, ensuring creative integrity and copyright transparency.”
Lyonne, in a statement shared with TheWrap, said it is “astounding” what can be created with AI when it is used “ethically and creatively.”

Apple’s antitrust woes are growing, with a judge referring a criminal case against the tech giant to federal prosecutors for violating court-imposed rules to maintain revenue from its borderline monopoly over segments of the App Store.
Under the ruling, Apple is barred from imposing commissions on payments made outside an app or restricting developers from telling users about alternative payment options that allow them to bypass fees on sales in the App Store, where the company exacts a toll of up to 30 percent on all transactions.
“Apple willfully chose not to comply with this Court’s Injunction,” wrote U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers. “It did so with the express intent to create new anticompetitive barriers which would, by design and in effect, maintain a valued revenue stream; a revenue stream previously found to be anticompetitive. That it thought this Court would tolerate such insubordination was a gross miscalculation.

Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed try to save the world with improv in the trailer for the action-comedy movie Deep Cover.
Director Tom Kingsley’s feature is set to begin streaming via Amazon Prime Video on June 12. Paddy Considine, Sonoya Mizuno, Ian McShane and Sean Bean round out the cast.
Deep Cover centers on Kat (Howard), an improv teacher recruited by an undercover cop (Bean) to enlist two of her students (Bloom and Mohammed) to impersonate criminals as they try to stop crime in London.
“You were so good,” Bloom assures Mohammed during a tense moment. “You committed. It was inspiring.”
Later, Howard scolds Bloom by saying, “I told you not to escalate.” He replies, “It’s where the scene went.”
Kingsley (Doctor Who) helmed the film from a script credited to Derek Connolly, Colin Trevorrow, Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen. Trevorrow, Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald serve as producers.

Quinta Brunson teased some ill-advised “Saturday Night Live” sketches in a promo Wednesday ahead of this week’s hosting gig, centering her pitches around President Donald Trump’s tariffs and a character named “Toilet Paper Mama.”
The video sketch highlighting the intentionally bad sketch kicks off with Andrew Dismukes and Brunson brainstorming ideas for the comedy sketch show’s May 3 episode.
“Quinta, welcome back, how ya feelin’?” Dismukes asks.
“I am so excited! But I’m also a little nervous,” Brunson says, clarifying that she’s not nervous about hosting the show, but “nervous about these tariffs.”
“But what if we did sketches centered around the items affected by the tariffs — and then we can keep the items after the show?” she poses.
That’s when Heidi Gardner comes in wrap-dressed in rolls of toilet paper. Welcome to the stage: Toilet Paper Mama.

Chappell Roan has won a Grammy, performed in front of one of the biggest Lollapalooza crowds of all time and finds no problem establishing boundaries as a rising star. However, one of the “scariest thing[s]” she’s endured was auditioning for The Voice.

AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron saw his total compensation fall to $11.35 million in 2024, down 55% from $25.4 million in 2023.
The package included a $1.5 million base salary, stock option awards of $5.44 million, non-equity incentive plan compensation of $4.38 million and $29,868 in “other” compensation, including $13,800 in 401(k) match contributions paid by the company and $16,068 in life insurance premiums.
The decline from 2023 was due to the value of his annual equity grant decreasing approximately 37%. Aron’s base salary and annual bonus opportunity did not change, resulting in a reduction in total compensation at a target of 25%. The movie theater chain’s CEO pay ratio was 974 to 1, with a median annual total compensation for all employees of $11,659.
In addition to Aron, chief financial officer Sean Goodman saw his total pay for 2024 fall 29% to $4.8 million, chief operations officer Daniel Ellis saw his pay dip 26.8% to $2.21 million and chief content officer Elizabeth Frank saw her pay tumble 38% to $2.03 million.

AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron received compensation of $11.3 million in 2024, down from $25.4 million in 2023 and $23.7 million in 2022, according to the cinema giant’s proxy statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday.
Last year, Aron received no bonus and a base salary of $1.5 million, the same salary and bonus as in the previous two years. And he received in 2023 stock awards of $5.4 million and non-equity incentive plan compensation of $4.3 million.
That was down on the $18 million in stock awards Aron received in 2023 and a non-equity incentive plan payout of $6 million. And in 2022, Aron received $16.1 million in stock awards and $6 million in a non-equity incentive plan compensation.
AMC continues to take part in an industrywide box office recovery, even as the fallout from the dual Hollywood strikes in 2023 appears to be behind the company. But AMC is still contending with a hefty debt load and changing consumer habits in the age of streaming.

Martin Scorsese and his Sikelia Productions will serve as producers on “Aldeas — A New Story,” an upcoming documentary that will feature the final on-camera interviews with the late Pope Francis.
“Aldeas” showcases the work of a cinema initiative of the same name developed by Scholas Occurrentes, an educational movement founded by Pope Francis that seeks to find human stories from across the world that can help bring unity in a divided world.
The “Aldeas” cinema initiative has supported short films from Italy, the Gambia and Indonesia through a group of international sponsors who have also helped fund local cinemas for the short films to premiere in. The making of these shorts through the “Aldeas” program will be interspersed with never-before-seen conversations between Scorsese and Pope Francis.
Scorsese and Francis met several times during the latter’s papacy, bonding over their mutual appreciation for cinema and its ability to build cultural connections.

For many years after the 1955 film Marty won the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or and then went on to win the best picture Oscar, there was little additional evidence of a Cannes/Oscars connection. But in the last five years, both Parasite and — just months ago — Anora followed in Marty’s footsteps.
Indeed, within the last year, specifically, the relevance of one event to the other became harder than ever to dispute, as an unprecedented 31 Oscar noms were allocated to films that had played in Cannes — spread between Anora, The Apprentice, Emilia Pérez, Flow, The Girl with the Needle, The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent, The Seed of the Sacred Fig and The Substance — and 40 percent of the eventual Oscar winners traced back to the fest, including Anora (best picture, director, actress, original screenplay and film editing), Emilia Pérez (original song), Flow (animated feature) and The Substance...

Asian members of the team behind “Freakier Friday,” Disney’s upcoming sequel to the 2003 comedy “Freaky Friday,” agree that the original film featured some “hurtful” choices surrounding its Asian characters. But in the new film, releasing in August, they sought to “make it right.”
In the 2003 film, Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan play a mother and daughter who are constantly at odds. When they get into a loud argument at a Chinese restaurant, owner Pei-Pei (Rosalind Chao) tells her mother (Lucille Soong) to stay out of it, but Soong’s character intervenes, offering Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) a platter of fortune cookies. “This isn’t really a good time,” Anna says, but Pei-Pei’s mother insists, before speaking in hurried Chinese. To shut her up, Tess and Anna take the cookies, which turn out to be magical, leading them to switch bodies until they can better understand each other.

Netflix executive Kelly Dalton is exiting the streamer to start her own production company, Higher Altitude Productions. Higher Altitude’s mission is to inspire change and build community around the stories they tell and to share real, honest stories that connect with people.
“Film has had a profound impact on my own life, which is why I’ve dedicated the last ten years to sharing stories,” Dalton says. “It’s been a privilege to work in the talent relations & awards space, and in the process, learn first-hand what a powerful healing tool film can truly be. In this next chapter, I want to use my experience and the relationships I’ve built to tell more stories that will inspire change and build community — and the first story I plan to tell is my own.”
The first story Higher Altitude Productions will tell is Dalton’s own experience of sexual abuse...

“Rust” director Joel Souza says he couldn’t have imagined anyone else completing the Western movie after the on-set accident that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins when Alec Baldwin’s gun accidentally discharged, also injuring Souza. Three and a half years later, the movie is finally opening in theaters Friday.
Souza told the Guardian that when he first considered finishing the film, “I’d been repelled by the thought of going back, but now it started to appeal. And I couldn’t live with the idea of someone else doing it.” But Hutchins’ family wanted to honor her by having the film with her final work completed, so he agreed to complete the Western.
It wasn’t easy returning to the set, Souza said: “I was a mess going in and a mess coming out. The crew carried me through. My family carried me through. Emotionally, I was all over the map.

Martin Scorsese is behind a documentary feature that counted Pope Francis as a collaborator prior to his death earlier this month.
Aldeas — A New Story is in development from Scholas Occurrentes, the worldwide educational movement that the late Pope founded. Scorsese is a producer on the movie that focuses on the Aldeas cinema initiative that aimed to combine Pope Francis’ interest in education, film production and community building.
The film centers on the behind-the-scenes stories for the scripted short films being made across the globe through the Aldeas project. Aldeas — A New Story will include previously unseen conversations between Scorsese and Pope Francis, along with the late Pope’s final in-depth on-camera interview for a feature.
“Aldeas is an extremely poetic and very constructive project because it goes to the roots of what human life is, human sociability, human conflicts … the essence of a life’s journey,” Pope Francis said...

Martin Scorsese will honor the late Pope Francis by producing “Aldeas – A New Story,” a feature-length documentary and worldwide cultural project developed by Scholas Occurrentes, the global educational movement founded by the Pope.
“Aldeas — A New Story” is rooted in Pope Francis’ belief in the sacred nature of creativity. The film chronicles the work of Scholas Occurrentes’ latest “Aldeas” cinema initiative, which brings together education, film production and community building to make some of the deepest calls of his papacy a reality: creating the culture of encounter from the peripheries, gathering together the beauty of human diversity and fostering unity in a divided world.
The documentary also features the Pope’s final in-depth on-camera interview for cinema, filmed exclusively for “Aldeas — A New Story.”

A federal appeals court has revived a copyright infringement lawsuit against Sam Smith and Normani that claimed their multiplatinum hit “Dancing with a Stranger” ripped off a 2015 song of an identical name.
A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday reversed a lower court’s dismissal of the case, finding that a jury could find that the hooks of the two songs are substantially similar. A California federal judge will reconsider the issue.
The reversal reinforces the appeals courts’ position in recent years warning against the early dismissal of copyright infringement lawsuits over creative works that’s emboldened creators and holders of rights to sue for idea theft. Since 2020, orders in lawsuits implicating Servant, The Shape of Water and the first Pirates of the Caribbean have been overturned.

Bill Belichick is aiming to clarify an incident where girlfriend Jordon Hudson appeared to awkwardly interrupt his CBS Sunday Morning interview.
In a statement from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where Belichick is a head coach, the iconic former New England Patriots coach said he agreed to speak to the CBS morning show to promote his new book, The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football.
“Unfortunately, that expectation was not honored during the interview. I was surprised when unrelated topics were introduced, and I repeatedly expressed to the reporter, Tony Dokoupil, and the producers that I preferred to keep the conversation centered on the book,” the statement reads.
But off-camera attempts to keep the interview centered on the book promotion apparently failed.
“After this occurred several times, Jordon, with whom I share both a personal and professional relationship, stepped in to reiterate that point to help refocus the discussion.

NBCUniversal kicked off a new round of layoffs ahead of its separation of cable assets into a new company, known as SpinCo.
Deadline reported that dozens of workers across the Comcast-owned company’s TV and streaming divisions will be impacted, in cuts that are being described as “surgical” rather than the more “sweeping” layoffs that happened previously.
The cuts impact marketing and communications employees across NBC, cable networks and Peacock, as well as on the studio side. Some junior members of the programming team were also impacted.
Comcast first announced plans to separate its cable assets into a new publicly traded company last year. The publicly traded entity — which is expected to reach 70 million U.S. households and generate $7 billion in annual revenue — will house USA Network, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, E!, Syfy and digital assets Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, Golf Channel, GolfNow and SportsEngine. Notably, Bravo will remain a part of NBCUniversal.

“Freakier Friday” director Nisha Ganatra said her upcoming “Freaky Friday” sequel will correct the 2003 film’s “hurtful” stereotypical portrayal of two Asian characters and Asian cultures.
While she recognized that “Freaky Friday” is a “beloved” film, she acknowledged that it depicted stereotypes “that were hurtful overall.”
“I remember watching it and feeling torn, mostly about the Asian representation, and also the soundtrack that was being used” in the scenes at the restaurant, Ganatra explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It was something I brought up right away when I had my first meetings with the producers. I had a moment of the presentation that was like, ‘problematic Asian representation!'”
The harmful depiction in question is related to the film’s general story plot of how Lindsay Lohan’s Anna and Jamie Lee Curtis’ Tess swap bodies. In the film, after watching the mother and daughter go at it...

Harvey Weinstein’s defense team continued to push for a mistrial Wednesday as the former mogul faces rape and criminal sexual charges in Manhattan for a second time.
Thus far, all three motions for a mistrial have been denied by Judge Curtis Farber.
Miriam Haley, a former production assistant on Project Runway and one of the complaining witnesses in the case, has been on the stand Tuesday and Wednesday. The latest call for a mistrial came Wednesday afternoon as Haley, who alleges that Weinstein forced oral sex on her in 2006, testified about why she continued to stay in communication with the former mogul after the alleged incident, saying, “I had no idea there were other people.”
Arthur Aidala, Weinstein’s defense attorney, called for that statement to be stricken from the record and moved for a mistrial saying she had “contaminated the whole jury.” Farber struck the statement but denied the mistrial,...

April 30 marks the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, the capture of the capital of South Vietnam by the Communist North Vietnamese army that marked the official end of the Vietnam War — a conflict that stretched two long decades and cost millions of lives. Approximately 60,000 of them were U.S. soldiers. Among the survivors was director Oliver Stone, whose combat injuries earned him multiple decorations, including a Bronze Star with “V” Device for valor, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster (to denote two wounds), an Air Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Stone — who through landmark films like 1986’s Platoon and 1989’s Born on the Fourth of July allowed the country to process the trauma of war — reflected on his time in Vietnam, his conversion to pacifism upon his return to the U.S. and his thoughts on similar endless and deadly conflicts currently plaguing the planet.

Following the record-breaking opening weekend for “A Minecraft Movie” and the breakout success of Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” a new slate of blockbusters and indie films are hoping to drum up excitement in May about what 2025 has to offer in the cinema landscape.
Starting with the weekend’s wide releases, Marvel is betting big on “Thunderbolts” after a series of underwhelming releases with “Captain America: Brave New World” and “The Marvels.” Starring Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan and Wyatt Russell, the film follows an unconventional team that bands together after being sent on a rogue operative mission. To give “Thunderbolts*” a different flair, Marvel’s marketing has focused on the talent behind the camera that previously worked on A24 projects like “Beef,” “Midsommar” and “A Different Man.”

“Star Wars” fans got two surprises Tuesday night. The first was when Senator Bail Organa, the adoptive father of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), appeared in “Andor” Season 2, Episode 6, and the second was when they discovered that the character was being portrayed this time by Benjamin Bratt, rather than Jimmy Smits.
Smits portrayed Bail in every one of the character’s previous live-action appearances. He made his debut as the character in 2002’s “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones” and subsequently reprised the role in 2005’s “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and even 2022’s “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”
The latest “Andor” episode, titled “What a Festive Evening,” marks the first time Bail has been portrayed by a different actor in a live-action film or TV show.
According to “Andor” creator Tony Gilroy, the recasting decision came down to good old-fashioned scheduling conflicts.
