The casting director for the James Bond franchise has claimed that younger actors showed they “didn’t have the mental capacity” for the role during the auditions process.
Debbie McWilliams, who has worked on the popular spy series since 1981, revealed that younger actors had originally auditioned for the lead role in 2006’s Casino Royale.
The part of Bond eventually went to Daniel Craig, who was 38 years old at the time.
“When we started [work on Casino Royale], it was a slightly different feel,” McWilliams recalled to Radio Times.
“We did look at a lot of younger actors. and I just don’t think they had the gravitas, they didn’t have the experience, they didn’t have the mental capacity to take it on, because it’s not just the part they’re taking on, it’s a massive responsibility.”

Rooney Mara may not have any new premieres this year, but a pair of films from last year’s Tiff will finally be hitting U.S. theaters. Just a week after Una arrives, The Secret Scripture, directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father), will get a release. The story follows Vanessa Redgrave as an older version of Mara’s character, reflecting on her traumatic life in Ireland through writing a diary alongside a cast including Jack Reynor, Theo James, Aidan Turner, and Eric Bana.
We said in our review, “The result falls flat and all too conventional for the talent involved. The problem lies more in Sheridan’s direction than in Mara’s acting, which is to say that she does deliver another good performance here, but everything else does her talent a major disservice. Rooney Mara fights off amorous admirers in the first trailer for the upcoming period drama, “The Secret Scripture.”
Loosely based on Sebastian Barry’s 2008 novel of the same name, the film co-stars Vanessa Redgrave, Jack Reynor, Theo James, and Eric Bana. It follows an elderly woman committed to a mental hospital, reflecting on her life during the turbulent times of the 1930s and 1940s.

The promise of a long-awaited Jim Sheridan return to his Irish roots on screen, complete with the exciting cast assembled, is enough to pique the interest of many a film fan – as the writer-director’s new drama The Secret Scripture is finally upon us. Starring Vanessa Redgrave, Rooney Mara and Eric Bana amongst others, this time-lapsing tale also promises a love triangle and a mystery in one. Though it has all the ingredients in place – being based on the moving and politically-charged 2008 novel by Sebastian Barry that was shortlisted for the Man Booker prize, it falls solely on the talents of its cast to see it through to completion.
The present-day story follows an elderly patient called Rose (Redgrave) who has been incarcerated for 50 years in a mental hospital, namely for killing her newborn. While there, Rose has documented her earlier life experiences and thoughts in the margins of a bible,...

Vanessa Redgrave is brilliant as a woman instutionalised for infanticide, but otherwise Jim Sheridan’s tearjerker is a merely an endurance test
It’s a testament to the unfeasible beauty of the cast of Jim Sheridan’s tearjerker that Poldark’s Aidan Turner, present in a supporting role, looks distinctly average by comparison. But all the smouldering gorgeousness of Rooney Mara, Theo James, Jack Reynor and Eric Bana can’t dress up this mawkish slog of a movie. Adapted from the book by Sebastian Barry, the story deals with subject matter that has already been tackled with more heartbreaking humour in Philomena and more biting fury in The Magdalene Sisters. Credit must go to Vanessa Redgrave, however, playing a woman who has been institutionalised since she was in her 20s and acting everyone else off the screen.

Rooney Mara has all but parted ways with the role of Lisbeth Salander, which is unfortunate considering The Girl in the Spider’s Web is finally beginning to spark into life, but the actress has still enjoyed a really rather stellar 2016. Following the acclaimed one-two punch of Una and Lion at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Mara has also lined up The Secret Scripture, a touching Irish romance in which she plays Roseanne McNulty.

While it didn’t make quite the splash as her other films like “Una” and “Lion” on this year’s festival circuit, Rooney Mara had a third drama in rotation with Tiff world premiere “The Secret Scripture.” The drama, based on the 2008 novel by Sebastian Barry, comes from Jim Sheridan, who has six Oscar nominations to his name thanks to the likes of “My Left Foot,” “In The Name Of The Father” and “In America.” Like those films, “Scripture” finds its characters wrestling with their identities while facing some form of persecution.

Sometimes, all the talent in the world can’t make a picture work, and while “The Secret Scripture” had a great ensemble, and an acclaimed director, it failed to make much of a ripple when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival this fall. Indeed, the movie is still without a U.S. distributor, but the first trailer has landed nonetheless, providing a taste of what audiences can expect.

In Jim Sheridan’s new film The Secret Scripture, based on the novel by Sebastian Barry, the six-time Oscar nominated director returns to themes familiar to him: politics, religion, family and truth. Vanessa Redgrave stars as Rose McNulty, a woman imprisoned for four decades in a mental ward, accused of killing her own son. Not only is she convinced she didn’t kill him, but she believes her son is still alive, and keeps a journal in the margins of a Bible recounting her stories. When the decaying mental ward is on the verge of being turned into a resort, she refuses to move, […]...

Writer-director Jim Sheridan has built a career off the plight of the Irish working class, with his best films (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father, and The Boxer) all starring Daniel Day-Lewis. Lately, without Day-Lewis, Sheridan has been stuck in a rut of average American films (Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Brothers, Dream House) and yet I still had somewhat decent expectations for his newest work, The Secret Scripture. It does, after all, star one of the very best actresses working these days, Rooney Mara. As evidenced in Carol, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Her, The Social Network, and more, she can detail a world of emotions with just a glance at her piercing green eyes.

Mara doesn’t quite convince as a woman trapped by her sexuality while Redgrave struggles in a long-term psychiatric unit in Jim Sheridan’s disappointing adaptation of the Sebastian Barry book
The career of Jim Sheridan is something of an oddity. In Ireland, his work has been universally lauded, from Oscar-winning debut My Left Foot to powerful Ira drama In the Name of the Father. He then dipped his toe into the Us with immigration tale In America, a film that still retained a strong Irish narrative, and also led to more awards glory.
But since then, he’s shaken off his homeland and the results have gone from underwhelming to disastrous. There was the vapid 50 Cent vehicle Get Rich or Die Tryin’, the entirely unnecessary remake of Susanne Bier’s Brothers and the staggeringly bad Daniel Craig thriller Dream House. One drama expected to debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival is Jim Sheridan‘s latest project, an adaptation of Sebastian Barry‘s The Secret Scripture. Featuring Rooney Mara, Jack Reynor, Theo James, Aidan Turner, Eric Bana, and Vanessa Redgrave, the story follows our main character writing a diary of her earlier years while in a Roscommon mental hospital.
One of our most-anticipated of the year, we now have the first image thanks to Scannain. Featuring the Carol star alongside Jack Reynor, a highlight in this year’s Sing Street and a contender for the coveted role of young Han Solo, it gives us a glimpse at the romance to come. While Relativity Media has U.S. rights, with their financial troubles as of late, hopefully someone else steps in to distribute this year. The Secret Scripture
Director: Jim Sheridan// Writers: Johnny Ferguson, Jim Sheridan
In light of his recent titles, it’s hard to forget that Jim Sheridan started out with My Left Foot back in 1989, and went on to work with Daniel Day-Lewis in two more superb roles. In 2004, Sheridan saw a resurgence with the success of In America, but a string of intriguing choices afterwards all seemed to fail, including the 50 cent headlined Get Rich or Die Tryin’, an unwise remake of Susanne Bier’s Brothers, and a supernatural thriller that was subjected to studio interference, Dream House. We’re thinking The Secret Scripture, based on the novel by Sebastian Barry and set to film in Ireland, will be a comeback worth anticipating, as it features a strong cast led by Rooney Mara. The film’s focus is a woman and her diary during an extended stay at a mental hospital.

During the madness of Comic-Con, one of the stories that slipped through our fingers was news that Rooney Mara was taking the lead role in director Jim Sheridan's adaptation of The Secret Scripture, a part that was originally taken by Jessica Chastain. Now the cast has filled out even more with Eric Bana (Deliver Us from Evil), Theo James (Divergent) and Jack Renyor (Transformers: Age of Extinction) all taking supporting roles alongside previously cast veteran actors Vanessa Redgrave and Jeremy Irons. The film is based on Sebastian Barry's novel about a 100-year old woman reflecting on life in a mental hospital. Here's a detailed synopsis of the book: In the beginning, Dr. William Grene’s interest in the almost impossibly old woman is merely professional, tinged perhaps with a hint of curiosity. Roseanne McNulty, one hundred years old, was one of the most beautiful girls in County Sligo,...

Jessica Chastain may seem like she can do it all, but there's one project it looks like she just can't squeeze in. Attached as recently as this spring to "The Secret Scripture," Cineuropa now reports that Rooney Mara is the young female lead opposite Vanessa Redgrave in the film. She'll join Jack Reynor and Jeremy Irons in the Jim Sheridan directed film, based on the book by Sebastian Barry, about "a 100-year-old woman in a mental hospital and her relationship with her psychiatrist." Production will begin this fall. Alejandro González Iñárritu is keeping very busy. He's got "Birdman" ready to unveil at Venice, he'll be shooting "The Revenant" this fall, and he's also headed to the small screen where he'll direct the series "One Percent." And he's got some unlikely actors for the lead roles. Deadline reports that Ed Helms, Hilary Swank and Ed Harris are lining up roles in the show that's "set.

She has been confined in the Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital, where Dr. Grene is the senior psychiatrist, since the days of World War II. Thomas Dunne (Brian Dennehy), based upon the great-grandfather of playwright Sebastian Barry, had been commissioner of the Dublin Metropolitan Police in the years before Irish independence in 1922, responsible for enforcing order on behalf of British rule. His fellows derisively dismissed him as a “Castle Catholic.” In The Steward of Christendom, set 10 years later, Dunne now resides in a small room of his own atop a rural madhouse, stripped not only of authority and status but down to his dirty drawers and shoeless, a ranting King Lear of the civil service. Like Lear, Dunne has three daughters,
