Look, I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn when I say that 2017 was a garbage year for a lot of people, but it’s important to note that periods of turmoil often produce meaningful horror movies. For what it’s worth, it looks like 2017 has done just that, with a myriad of terrific movies from a variety of sources. So, without further ado, here are some of my horror highlights from the last 12 months:
It: I’m going to get this one out of the way early, not because I didn’t love it, but because I’m sure it’s on a lot of people’s lists, and you’ve already heard a ton about it. The huge hype over It actually kept me from watching it at first, as I have that rare disease that repels me from things that a bunch of people enjoy.

[To get you into the spooky spirit, the Daily Dead team is spotlighting double features that we think would be fun to watch this Halloween season. Keep an eye on Daily Dead for more double feature recommendations, and check here for our previous Halloween 2017 coverage.]
This October, get ready to rock (queue bending guitar notes). Because Daily Dead productions brings you the rock event of the season with Heavy Metal Halloween (queue random explosion noises). Live, from whatever venue you want to call your house, we’ve got two face-melting, pants-dropping flicks that are sure to leave your guests on their knees worshipping at the altar of the gods of rock (queue the Rob Halford knock-off kind of, sort of, not really hitting a high note).
Okay, don’t worry. I’m not going to keep using the crappy concert ad gimmick, but this feature is going to lean heavy on the heavy metal. Think of this Halloween season double feature recommendation as an opening act and headliner that will make for a great show where metal is the connective thread, but each movie has its own tone and themes that will give at least...

Fire is commonly associated with passion and assertive action in philosophy; Sean Byrne’s latest feature The Devil’S Candy has plenty of the three. In only his second feature film, Byrne paints traditional horror elements through a satanic platform. Some of these elements provide a timeless effect and some have been dragged through the horror landscape for far too long.
The film’s core action takes place in a rural Texas landscape. It is the cliche story of a family moving into a new house that brings strange consequences. Have we traveled across this landscape before? Jesse Hellman, played by Ethan Embry, is the artist within the film; Embry gives a fine performance. Hellman is the type of guy you look at and imagine to be a rockstar, but on the other end his facial composure is comparable to Jesus. He paints butterflies for the...

‘The Devil’s Candy’ Blasts Genre Thrills and the Devil’s Music Into Your Heathen SoulThe director of ‘The Loved Ones’ returns with another intense and suspenseful thriller.
Writer/director Sean Byrne’s debut feature, The Loved Ones, blew festival audiences (including us) away back in 2009 with thrills and suspense born from seeing a character we truly cared about fighting for his life against increasingly twisted and violent odds. It took three years before it actually opened in the Us, but it was worth the wait. Now Byrne’s equally intense follow-up film is finally being released… after premiering at film fests nearly two years ago.
Once again though, The Devil’s Candy is a blistering, intimate, heavy metal-tinged horror/thriller worth waiting for as it drops a loving family into a devilish nightmare where each violent chord brings them closer to a grim and grisly fate.

Out in limited theaters and on VOD this Friday from IFC Midnight is The Devil’s Candy, which was written and directed by Sean Byrne (the creative force behind the equally fantastic thriller The Loved Ones). The film stars Ethan Embry as an embattled father who will stop at nothing to keep his family—and particularly his daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco)—safe from devilish forces in the form of a possessed man named Ray (portrayed by the always engaging Pruitt Taylor Vince).
Daily Dead recently had the chance to speak with Byrne about how his latest film became a way to explore his own fears and insecurities—both personally and professionally—and how he enjoys trying to subvert horror fans' expectations whenever he takes the directorial reins. Byrne also discussed his thoughts on celebrating heavy metal culture for The Devil’s Candy, collaborating with his cast, and more.

The director opens up about how his fears inspired the heavy metal infused homage.
It’s hard to adequately describe The Devil’s Candy, Australian director Sean Byrne’s follow up to 2009’s The Loved Ones. The film, which premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and was eventually picked up by IFC Midnight for U.S. distribution, is a pastiche of occult horror, demonic possession, and religious mania, while also offering viewers a truly poignant family drama. It’s a pure treat for horror fans but above all else, it’s metal as fuck — literally.
The Devil’s Candy follows the not-so-ordinary Hellman family who move into an isolated but spacious Texas farmhouse, which may be a gateway to something sinister. Ethan Embry stars as Jesse, a struggling painter, who bonds with his daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco), over their shared love of heavy metal music. Shiri Appleby rounds up the family as Astrid, the...

Heavy metal and horror movies go together like chocolate and peanut butter, not least because of their shared fascination with Satan. The relationship between the trio goes back to the days when Ozzy Osbourne and his bandmates decided to name Black Sabbath after the Mario Bava movie playing across the street from their rehearsal space, and Australian filmmaker Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones) revisits it once more for his sophomore horror feature, The Devil’s Candy. This time around, though, Byrne adds a twist by appealing to a growing and under-represented segment of the extreme art forms’ shared fan base: parents.
A long-haired, tattooed Ethan Embry stars as Jesse Hellman, a struggling painter who has passed on his love of all things metal to his preteen daughter, Zooey (Kiara Glasco). If you missed it on the festival circuit, Sean Byrne's The Devil's Candy, starring Ethan Embry (Cheap Thrills, Fashionista, Can't Hardly Wait), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Heavy, Monster), Kiara Glasco (Maps To The Stars, Bitten) and Shiri Appleby (Unreal, Roswell) is coming to a theater or TV near you this Friday. You can see the film in select theaters and on VOD and digital platforms on March 17th from IFC Midnight. Byrne, who previously directed the fan favorite cult horror film The Loved Ones, is back with another fantastic piece of filmmaking. Far from your typical home invasion flick, The Devil's Candy makes you care deeply about its characters. They're not your typical family, for starters. They love heavy metal and weird art, and the family's dad Jesse (Ethan Embry) is a full-time...

I enjoy a good horror flick, and this one definitely looks like it'll be worth checking out! I've been hearing great things about it from people who have already seen it, so I was pretty excited to finally see a trailer. It looks like a great horror film that lives up to the hype. The movie premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and it currently boasts a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film stars Ethan Embry (Can't Hardly Wait, Empire Records) as "a struggling artist and metalhead who moves with his wife (Shiri Appleby) and daughter (Kiara Glasco) to a new house with a grisly history in rural Texas. Things begin to unravel for the family with the appearance of Ray (Pruitt Taylor Vince), a previous occupant of the abode and all-around disturbed-seeming personage."

"It's like it flowed through me. I don't remember painting this." IFC Midnight has unveiled the trailer for a horror film titled The Devil's Candy, a creepy satanic possession tale about a struggling painter who moves into a home in Texas. Ethan Embry stars as the father of a young family who is possessed by satanic forces, creating some freaky artwork. The cast includes Shiri Appleby, Kiara Glasco and Pruitt Taylor Vince. This is from the same filmmaker who made the cult horror hit The Loved Ones, and the film first premiered at festivals a few years ago. It looks intense, though I'm not sure why it took years to be released. It shouldn’t be a surprise to any of our readers that we here at PopOptiq love horror movies. All month long we’ve been counting down the 200 greatest horror films ever made alongside our 31 Days of Horror marathon. In his long-awaited follow-up to the brutal 2009 prom night from hell feature film The Loved Ones, writer/director Sean Byrne is back with an even more outrageous spin on a group of innocents pulled into a deadly situation. It's quite a drastic location change to switch from filming in the island country of New Zealand to flying around the world to capture the dusty city of Austin, Texas, but Byrne photographs the land like he's lived there all his life.
As the satanic story unfolds of this small southern family caught within the encroaching fire that burned the previous residents long before they moved in, they find that even the smallest cinder left behind still manages to catch their perfect lives aflame, and engulf them whole. The evil presence still trapped in this house on this hot desert soil is still very much present and hungry for the sweet taste of blood.

Metal, next to my love for film scores, runs in my blood. I was one of the few kids in my high school that wore a lot of Metallica shirts and, back then, all I listened to was metal. I was definitely an outcast because of this. Most people in my high school liked R&B and Country (and not the good kind).
I didn’t know much about The Devil’s Candy except that it just played at the Toronto International Film Festival during its Midnight Madness program and dealt with a family dealing with a possible demonic entity that possesses a painter and that it was Sean Byrne‘s follow-up to The Loved Ones. No, that’s not Immortan Joe in the picture above – it’s jacked-as-hell Ethan Embry painting while being overtaken by satanic influence in his new thriller, The Devil’s Candy. He delivers a powerhouse performance as a father who unlocks an inner demon upon moving into a new home, but Embry’s latest film brings even more clout with the return of director Sean Byrne, who has been quiet since 2009’s The Loved Ones - and what a return it is.
The Devil’s Candy is all about seething, brooding tension, as Byrne builds a demonic story that’s begging to explode in a fiery fury of hellish horrors and heavy metal, but its restraint is even more impressive. The Devil’s Candy is one of those horror films that grips you by the throat and enjoys watching you squirm, dragging you down into a depths of Hell as Metallica riffs usher you in.

After a six-year hiatus, writer/director Sean Byrne returns to the big screen with his first American feature, The Devil’s Candy. In 2009, Byrne came out of nowhere and wowed audiences with his cult hit, The Loved Ones. Those who enjoyed The Loved Ones clever twists and excellent pacing shouldn’t be disappointed by Byrne’s foray into supernatural horror.
Jesse (Ethan Embry) is a struggling artist with a hipster beard, a fully tattooed body, and an intense love of heavy-metal. Jesse wants to create pieces that are in line with his artistic vision but instead commits to painting butterflies for bank murals so that he can afford to move his wife Astrid (Shiri Appleby) and daughter Zooey (Kiara Glasco) into a new home. When Jesse and Astrid find the perfect property (featuring a giant space for Jesse’s studio...

The first season of Bitten performed very well in Canada (where it's produced) and even became Space's highest-rated original series to date. The show performed okay here in the States on Syfy. How will season two do? Will this supernatural series be cancelled or renewed for a third season? If it's a hit in Canada but not in the U.S., will Syfy air future seasons? Stay tuned.

Maps to the Stars is a film which explores the effect of our celebrity-obsessed society. Following a variety of famous characters who are trying to hide their secrets from the lime light, worlds come crashing down around them as Agatha Weiss comes to town. Recently freed from a psychiatric hospital she has arrived to search for her family who abandoned her a long time ago.
Well. Yes. I am not really sure how to start with Maps to the Stars. So let’s start with the obvious. Julianne Moore is crazy. In this film I mean, I couldn’t describe her sanity in real life because I don’t know her.

‘Maps to the Stars’ trailer and clips: Julianne Moore goes ballistic after losing a role, Robert Pattinson learns that Mia Wasikowska’s parents are brother and sister (photo: Robert Pattinson in ‘Maps to the Stars’) The Hollywood satire Maps to the Stars, the second David Cronenberg-Robert Pattinson collaboration to be screened in competition for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival — following Cosmopolis two years ago — is one of the most anticipated films at the festival for obvious reasons: although an international box office disappointment, the brainy, stream-of-consciousness Cosmopolis earned a number of enthusiastic reviews and was the runner-up (trailing only Leos Carax’s fellow white limo movie Holy Motors) on the list of Best Films of 2012 compiled by the prestigious Cahiers du Cinéma. Big changes are in the air in the Season 2 premiere of BBC America's "Copper."
It's 1865 and Lincoln's assassination is just around the corner, but the biggest development in Five Points is the return of General Brendan Donovan (Donal Logue), who heads home from the battlefield to restore order in New York's Sixth Ward.
Series co-creator Tom Fontana has described Donovan as a "Boss Tweed like character," but he remains primarily an intriguing mystery in the season premiere. Still, the arrival of Logue -- who has been building up a steady resume of serialized cable dramas including "Terriers," "Vikings" and "Sons of Anarchy" -- is easily one of the Season 2 bright spots so far.
The premiere spends a lot of time on psycho criminal Buzzie Burke (guest star Noah Danby), who carves his initials into Eva (Franka Potente) before she bites off a chunk of his ear. Corky (Tom Weston-Jones...

Congratulations, TV Fanatics! You guys called it in the comments section of "Magic Hour Part 1."
Tommy was already dead by the time he joined the Haven police department. I'm so proud to be associated with such a smart group! You complete me. While the supposition of shapeshifter was a little off, we received confirmation in "Burned" that Tommy was indeed dead for at least six weeks, and Audrey and Nathan found his skin floating in a tank, with other skins, making The Bolt Gun Killer (Tbgk) a skin walker!
Still, not a lot to go on, and the first thing that came to my mind as Audrey stood next to Nathan in the basement was... oh my God it's Nathan. Then... no, it's Claire! The conversations between Claire and Audrey haven't been as fascinating since Tommy died. Could Tbgk be sporting Claire's skin now? After all, as Nathan and Audrey realized,...

When Mad Men's Joan Harris (Christina Hendricks) received her indecent proposal this season on the AMC period drama, viewers were sharply divided about her actions within the controversial and polarizing episode. But Hendricks' Harris is emblematic of a larger trend within television this year: the virtual proliferation of prostitutes within scripted dramas. Over at The Daily Beast, you can read my latest feature, "TV's New Prostitute Fixation," in which I examine the sudden proliferation of prostitutes on television, from Game of Thrones and Crimson Petal to True Blood and Copper, and what may be behind the trend. On BBC America’s period drama Copper, which premiered on Sunday, the first person encountered by Kevin Corcoran, the 19th century New York City policeman played by Tom Weston-Jones, is a child prostitute who promptly offers to “pleasure” him in exchange for coin. No more than 10 years old, Copper’s Annie (Kiara Glasco...

If you think America is strange, violent and complex now, and you wish for a simpler, kinder time way back when, then BBC America's "Copper" may mess with your nostalgic yearnings. It turns out the past is just as dark, twisted and ultimately hopeful as today (after all, we survived it to get here).
