The Japanese tokusatsu kaiju television series Ultra Q premiered in 1966 – and quickly became a pop culture phenomenon, launching a franchise that has, over the decades, consisted of more than thirty TV shows, more than forty films, a whole bunch of specials and mini-series, a long list of video games, and a bunch of comic books. The latest entry in the franchise is an animated feature called Ultraman: Rising, which will be released through the Netflix streaming service on June 14th. In anticipation of that release, a trailer for Ultraman: Rising has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.
Directed by John Aoshima and Shannon Tindle, who wrote the script with Marc Haimes, Ultraman: Rising has the following synopsis: With Tokyo under siege from rising monster attacks, baseball star Ken Sato reluctantly returns home to take on the mantle of Ultraman. With Tokyo under siege from rising kaiju attacks, Dodgers baseball superstar Ken Sato (Christopher Sean) reluctantly returns home to take on the mantle of rogue superhero Ultraman from his father (Gedde Watanabe) while signing with the Giants. But he has trouble balancing his passion for baseball and his family obligation to be Ultraman. Then, when forced to raise a 35-foot-tall, fire-breathing baby kaiju girl, Sato must confront his huge ego to protect her and Japan from destruction.
Tindle first conceived of his film as an original parental superhero story (“Made in Japan”). That was back in 2001 when he was a character designer on “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.” He later developed it...

"Ultraman - do your job!" Netflix has unveiled the full official trailer for Ultraman: Rising, a brand new animated take on Ultraman from director Shannon Tindle (also of Kubo and "Lost Ollie"). This has been in development for years at Ilm, with the VFX house handling most of the key animation, along side Netflix Animation & Tsuburaya Productions. Ken Sato is a superstar baseball player who returns to Japan to become the latest hero to carry the mantle of Ultraman. His plans go awry, however, when he ends up raising a newborn kaiju monster as his own kid. Staring Christopher Sean, Tamlyn Tomita, Gedde Watanabe, Keone Young, and Julia Harriman. Ultraman has been fighting kaiju for more than 50 years, but you’ve never seen him like this. The Japanese hero is coming to Netflix in a new animated film, Ultraman: Rising, and you won’t believe who he’s bringing along.
After decades of Ultramanappearances, beginning with the original 1966 television series created by Eiji Tsuburaya and Tetsuo Kinjo, the film introduces an all-new Ultraman: baseball star Ken Sato. In the new trailer for Ultraman: Rising, which you can watch above, you’ll get a glimpse at one of the challenges Sato faces: a baby kaiju, who imprints on Ultraman and turns his world upside down.
For director Shannon Tindle (creator of Lost Ollie), everything about Ultraman: Rising sprung from this initial concept. “What if I took a character who doesn’t want to be Ultraman, who kind of messes up his job on one of his early outings and...

After first teasing the costume at the end of February, yesterday saw us finally get a proper look at David Corenswet's Man of Steel in DC Studios and James Gunn's Superman. Unfortunately, the response has been mixed.
That's typically the case with any suit reveal, but the image makes some noteworthy missteps in its presentation that have left some fans concerned with the creative direction of the Dcu.
In this feature, we take a look at those and what the image itself reveals about Superman. From a possible villain tease to the suit's finer, possibly McU-inspired finer details, we're breaking it down for you in as much detail as possible.

Last year, Gunn and Safran introduced new plans for the “Dcu,” a cinematic universe intended to replace and reboot the Dceu. The initial phase, dubbed ‘Gods & Monsters,’ encompasses animated projects and live-action shows set in Themyscira long before Wonder Woman’s era.
Although the animated series ‘Creature Commandos’ debuted first, the true kickoff of the Dcu will be ‘Superman,’ a live-action film centering on a younger Superman, effectively supplanting Cavill’s established Man of Steel. While the movie is still far from release, we’ve gathered available information in this comprehensive guide. Let’s dive in!
The plot of the film remains a mystery, yet its inspiration is clear enough
At the Dcu reveal, Gunn mentioned that the upcoming movie draws inspiration from ‘All-Star Superman,’ despite the costume drawing from Alex Ross’ art and the logo resembling ‘Kingdom Come’ Superman at the table reading. The movie’s brief synopsis...

Fairy Tail is a classic anime series that has its own unique position. It might not have the fame of the big three of shonen manga, but for numerous fans, it was their entrance into the universe of anime and manga.
Fairy Tail is considered by author Hiro Mashima as his greatest work, even though he has been involved with other projects too. The plot is based on a common topic, showing the influence of friendship, which might be exactly what new anime fans require.

Even though Fairy Tail is usually light and comical, it has given us some very scary bad guys in forms of dragons, demons, and deranged immortals. In a world where magic is everywhere and can appear in many forms, it’s not surprising that certain individuals would use their powers for evil purposes. Time and tide wait for none, even if you are an extremely overpowered speedster with the ability to transcend the barriers of different dimensions and universes. As DC’s present animated cinematic universe, dubbed Tomorrowverse, reaches the end of its journey with the adaptation of one of comics’ most important series, Crisis on Infinite Earths, in trilogy form, the first part focuses on the scarlet speedster Barry Allen, aka Flash, and his seminal role in the overarching narrative. In a sense, it’s a befitting conclusion (not even mentioning the key role Flash played in all the DC “Crisis”) given that Barry was the only surviving member of the previous cinematic universe Dcamu and also the one who introduced viewers to Tomorrowverse, acting as a link to tie in different iterations of characters, universes, and realities.

We are currently in the midst of an international Kaiju renaissance of sorts. Godzilla Minus One won an Academy Award for its visual effects and was a hit across the globe. Meanwhile, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was number one in the American box office for a second week in a row. With the release of the Kaiju No. 8 anime, based off the wonderful manga by Naoya Matsumoto, the audience for stories of mysterious gargantuan creatures will grow even wider. But even if they don’t necessarily fit into the Kaiju Eiga (monster movie) subgenre of science fiction, the potency of the Kaiju has been explored in anime over and over again. ‘Superman’ is the most anticipated Dcu project at the moment, even though ‘Creature Commandos’ will hit screens earlier. After months of anticipation, James Gunn happily announced the commencement of ‘Superman’ filming on February 29th, coincidentally Superman’s birthday, in Svalbard, Norway’s Adventdalen Valley. The location was chosen for its Arctic resemblance and natural beauty.
With filming underway, more scoops and leaks about the movie are surfacing. Despite limited plot details, speculation abounds, occasionally sparking viral discussions.

Comic book fans frequently navigate through a sea of online rumors, especially when it comes to upcoming movies. A recent example is the chatter surrounding the villain in James Gunn’s Superman reboot.
Superman from DC Comics
The movie explores Clark Kent/Superman’s internal conflict. He is a reporter in Metropolis with extraordinary powers. Born on the planet Krypton, he was raised by the Kent family on Earth, giving him both Kryptonian heritage (his alien origin and powers) and a human upbringing (the values he learned from his adoptive parents).
The movie delves into how he grapples with these two identities. Recently, rumors have also circulated about Ultraman appearing as the villain in the film, but Gunn quickly clarified these reports.

One of the things that makes My Hero Academia stand out is how relatable and human the characters feel, especially the young heroes at UA. The series has just exploded in popularity and is rapidly becoming one of the biggest manga hits from Weekly Shonen Jump. With each new chapter, fans are surprised by how far the story has evolved from its original premise.

Be it through the anime or the manga, My Hero Academia saga has perfectly entertained its viewers throughout the years since it first originated a decade ago. Created by Mangaka Kohei Horikoshi sensei, the series immaculately serves as the ultimate storyline through its superhero themes. But while most would describe it as perfection at its peak, a few others’ opinion tends to differ.

The original 1954 "Godzilla" was directed by Ishirō Honda, butithout minimizing his importance, it's impossible that the film would have turned out the same way without the special effects Director Eiji Tsuburaya. Portraying a giant monster with the convincing scale of Godzilla had almost never been done before and crafting the monster was Tsuburaya's responsibility.
Tsuburaya had a prolific career that began almost 30 years before he worked on "Godzilla," and included previous collaborations with Honda on the war films "Eagle of the Pacific" and "Farewell Rabaul." Today, though, he is mostly remembered as "the father of Tokusatsu" or effects-heavy Japanese film/TV. Such productions typically depict actors in costume as giant monsters, robots, or superheroes. Tsuburaya earned this title not just through his work on "Godzilla" and subsequent films (such as "Rodan"), but by creating the 1967 TV series turned media phenomenon "Ultraman."

Carl Weathers passed away peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 1, 2024, leaving an indelible mark on our pop culture. Weathers, who most recently joined the Star Wars galaxy as both a talented director and as the charismatic magistrate Greef Karga, is a legend whose years as a performer on both the big and small screens are worthy of celebration.
Weathers originally made his name in college football, but when his NFL career didn’t pan out, he moved into acting. His linebacker physique made him perfect to play heavyweight champion of the world Apollo Creed in the first Rocky film, and his pop culture immortality was assured. You’ll find him in several iconic ’80s movies, including in one of our genre favorites, Predator.
If you’re interested in seeking out the actor’s work beyond Rocky, Predator, and Star Wars, here are our picks for the best of Carl Weathers in movies and TV.

Tokusatsu and Kaiju, what better a combination? Shin Ultraman, part of the Shin Japan Heroes Universe Project, is the third film in a series that takes classic Japanese media and brings it to the modern big screen. Hideaki Anno co-directed this film alongside Shinji Higuchi, as well as serving as the script writer, co-producer, and co-editor. As a result, just as with the pair’s previous project together (Shin Godzilla), this has Anno’s aesthetic and sensibilities all over it; this being evident in terms of cinematography, philosophical themes, and the score. Speaking of the score, Shiro Sagisu did an excellent job with the material used for the film. The musical score includes original material composed by Shiro Sagisu as well as reused material from previous Ultraman series such as the 1965 series Ultraman Q, along with several unused tracks from previous projects that were composed by Shiro...

In Shin Ultraman, “we learn the appearance of giant unidentified life forms known as ‘S-Class Species (Kaiju)’ has become commonplace in Japan. The Japanese Government formed a Kaiju defense taskforce known as the Sssp, led by Kimio Tamura (played by Drive My Car’s Hidetoshi Nishijima). After a particularly challenging encounter, a silver giant descends from the sky to rescue the country. Dubbed Ultraman, this giant’s identity and purpose are a mystery.”
