With short-form comedy series Flipped, Kaitlin Olson was afforded the opportunity to get involved with the Quibi platform at its inception, jumping at the chance to play the kind of self-involved, heightened character for which she’s become well known.
Directed by Ryan Case, the series centers on Jann (Will Forte) and Cricket Melfi (Olson), a chronically underemployed couple, who have proclaimed themselves home renovation experts, with total confidence that they are TV’s next great home design celebrity duo. While working on their application for a competition that would allow them to realize their dreams, the pair stumble on hidden cartel money, within one of their fixer-uppers, and subsequently, they are forced to design homes for the leaders of a drug cartel.
Sharing scenes in the comedy with Arturo Castro, Andy Garcia and Eva Longoria, the actress left the shoot with a new appreciation for the opportunities to be found in short-form storytelling.

Directing any film or television show is a challenging feat, but there are extra complications for those who step in for an episode or two of a longer-running series: They have to lead a group of people who know the ins and outs of the storytelling, and the set itself, better than they do. The skills they need extend beyond leadership and emotional intelligence to the ability to be a utility player.
Veteran director Guy Norman Bee, who got his start on such shows as “ER” and “Third Watch,” and recently helmed episodes of “Take Two” and “Blood & Treasure,” compares the task of traveling from show to show to being a session musician.
“You show up and plug in and ‘Ok, let’s go,’ ” he says. “Your ability to shift gears and jump on a moving train, and then jump off elegantly after, is what keeps you surviving — because your reputation gets around.

Meet the new voice of Carmen Sandiego.
The Golden Globe-winning actress Gina Rodriguez will be the new voice of Carmen Sandiego in an animated series that is currently in the works at Netflix, according to The Tracking Board. The series will be based on the 80s educational video game that inspired PBS’ early-to-mid 90s children’s game show, both called Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? Numbers don’t lie. A recent study found female filmmakers remain “grossly underrepresented” when it comes to directing opportunities, and there is no arena in which that is more apparent than Hollywood’s own studio system. As The Wrap recently noted, “of the 149 movies currently slated for a wide release from the six legacy studios over the next three years, only 12 have female directors. That means a whopping 92 percent of the major motion pictures due in theaters through the end of 2019 will be helmed by men.”
That number only includes studio features from the big six, not speciality arms like Fox Searchlight, Sony Pictures Classics, or Focus Features. However, adding those more indie-minded distributors (which are often heavy on festival acquisitions) doesn’t paint a much rosier picture. Over the course of 2017 and 2018, only 24 films directed by women will hit theaters care of a Hollywood studio, and despite continued attention...

Even when Modern Family feels hackneyed or rushed, it is hitting its laugh marks. You cannot help but admire the jokes that hit, even if the tone or pacing is off. An episode as manic and overstuffed as “Sleeper” should not work at all, but the cast manages to make the comedy beats work. It also proves that you can have only one good storyline and still make an episode worthwhile.
This week’s half-hour capitalizes on a relationship the show focuses on too little, that between Ed O’Neill’s Jay and Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Mitch. “Sleeper” focuses on this difficult father-son bond with honesty and poignancy, almost enough to make you forget how little the comic timing works.
The episode begins with Jay and Mitch at the mall. Mitch sits down and pretends to play a piano that is making music on its own, while Jay marvels at his ability.

Modern Family Season 4, Episode 19: “The Future Dunphys”
Written by Elaine Ko
Directed by Ryan Case
Airs on Wednesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
Though all of the stories in this week’s Modern Family are very separate, “The Future Dunphys” still delivers a solid half hour of family TV comedy. The episode is a little weak at times but still features the fun gimmickry than we know and love as well as more scenes with the hilarious Lily.
The least entertaining plot of the episode is Manny and Jay’s adventures at a private school. Jay takes Manny to his interview and unresolved issues surface when Jay relives his history with snotty private schools. Working for the privileged led to Jay not being treated well and as the tour of the school continues, Jay realises that he in fact wanted to be one of them – something that all of us could have guessed.

It's officially a month into 2011 now, so all of us can take a step back and see where we're standing on all those wonderful New Year's resolutions that seemed so noble and important four weeks ago. Well, not me. I didn't make any New Year's resolutions because when you manage to sprain an ankle and break a finger on New Year's Eve, I think that counts as a massive goddamn hint about what the universe has to say about your near future. In my case, what it was mostly saying was that I'd spend the first several weeks of 2011 alternately frustrated and in pain, with a high chance of having a finger that will be stuck at an angle best described as "jaunty." You should all be so lucky. So let's hear how the resolutions are or aren't coming along and in the meantime here's your Monday night TV:

On heels of its big victory at 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards in late August, "Modern Family" reveals two promos for their upcoming second season. In one promo, ABC called its comeback as the return of Emmy-winning Best Comedy, urging people to "make some new memories with the family".
In the other ad, the network highlights the media's glowing reviews of the TV show as if to explain why the Sofia Vergara-starring comedy deserves the August 29 award. "Modern Family" will open the second season on September 22.
Beside winning Best Comedy, "Modern Family" also grabbed Best Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation and Best Writing for a Comedy Series. In addition, Eric Stonestreet, Ryan Case and Jeff Greenberg brought home a trophy each for their contribution to the TV series.

Plus can Renner replace Cruise, a faceless Karl Urban, and Bristol Palin on Dancing With the Stars.
Jeremy Renner is going to be the hot young agent working with Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 4. And probably the hot young agent working without Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 5. I wonder how Cruise feels about Renner’s upcoming Scientology movie?
So the cast of Dancing With the Stars continues to leak out, assuming the leaks are accurate. Now they say that public speaker/actress Bristol Palin is going to do the show. Yes, she just said that Levi Johnston was a ‘ho for the spotlight, and now she’s doing this. Can you imagine what Sarah is going to say if anyone criticizes her daughter? Too late, this absolutely makes her a public figure.
Joss Whedon had a “nerdgasm” when Paramount called him and told him the cast and crew for The Avengers.
