FX is stepping into the standup comedy ring, with comedy specials from Kate Berlant and Byron Bowers to premiere exclusively on Hulu on Sept. 15, the network announced.
“Kate Berlant: Cinnamon in the Wind” serves as the comedian’s first live solo standup special. Set in an intimate space, the “A League of Their Own” star takes on not only the audience, but also a mirrored reflection of herself in her absurdist show. As she challenges the crowd’s expectations of her comedy, Berlant analyzes her own need to perform, as well as her connection to the room.
Bo Burnham directed the special, which was filmed in 2019. He’s also attached as an executive producer alongside recent Emmy winner Jerrod Carmichael (“Rothaniel”), Chris Storer (“The Bear”) and Jeff Tomsic. “Kate Berlant: Cinnamon in the Wind” is produced by Rotten Science.

Mark Cuban, billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner, Shark Tank star and early Internet entrepreneur, is announcing the launch of his latest media venture, a mobile interactive storytelling platform called Fireside.
Cuban, who has spanned tech and entertainment for years — his 2929 Entertainment portfolio includes Magnolia Pictures and Magnet Releasing — is co-founder of the venture with Falon Fatemi, formerly of Google/YouTube. It’s basically a set of tools that let professional content creators easily produce, edit and distribute shows for live audiences, Fatemi said. It helps creators sell tickets to the shows if they want and gathers audience response data to help them fine-tune productions.
Fatemi, who is CEO, told Deadline that Fireside’s proprietary technology can be used by creators from podcasters, authors, musicians, television personalities and comedians to business leaders and policy makers. It’s been in private beta for the past several months and has already attracted north of five hundreds of creators,...

Tiffany Haddish won Best comedy Album at the Grammys for “Black Mitzvah.” It was her first bidn in the category and her second overall following her Best Spoken Word Album nomination for “The Last Black Unicorn” in 2019. She was the only woman nominated in the comedy race this year, and the Grammys have been shockingly stingy to female comedians, so this win was especially noteworthy. Check out the complete list of Grammy winners here.
In the last 34 years, only one other woman took home Best Comedy Album: Kathy Griffin in 2014 for “Calm Down Gurrl.” Before that only four other women claimed this trophy: Jo Stafford, Elaine May, Lily Tomlin and Whoopi Goldberg. This also makes Haddish just the second Black woman to win the award.
SEE2021 Grammy winners list: 63rd Annual Grammy results in all 84 categories
The historical shortfall is certainly not for a lack of female comedians in the running.

Kathy Griffin came to the defense of the Kardashian family on Wednesday, saying that Kim Kardashian and family matriarch Kris Jenner “were there for me” after her infamous Donald Trump photo was published and “99 percent of my liberal anti-Trump Hollywood friends abandoned me.”
In a multi-tweet thread, Griffin added that Kardashian and Jenner didn’t stand by her “for retweets or attention or for their show,” adding that “me and my boyfriend were the only ones who knew,” and that Jenner “also helped me promote my current tour when others have declined to be associated with me.”
The impassioned defense began with an innocuous tweet, when Griffin responded to a social media post stating that Kendall and Kris Jenner “snuck into Kathy Griffin’s house and stole her wigs (really).”

Good fences make good neighbors, but bad relations between neighbors can make for some pretty juicy lawsuits.
Comedian Kathy Griffin has been hit with a lawsuit by her neighbors, Kb Home CEO Jeffrey T. Mezger and his wife Sandra, alleging that Griffin and her boyfriend, Randy Bick, made “repeated and demonstrably unfounded” complaints against the Mezgers, and spied on them.
In the suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on July 20, the Mezgers say that Griffin and Bick moved in next to them in July 2016 and almost immediately “began to lodge a series of noise complaints with the Bel Air Crest guard gate staff, later escalating their complaints to the Hoa board and the Los Angeles Police Department.”

Hilary Clinton is the more experienced orator, but our perception of Donald Trump as a candidate could be shaped by another television institution in which he was on stage while facing opponents who cast aspersions upon him: The Roast of Donald Trump.
First popularized by Dean Martin in the 1970s, the celebrity roast mocks iconic performers and was initially designed as TV’s way of saying: We love you enough to put you through this. Now an annual Comedy Central tradition, in 2011 its subject was a businessman and reality star who is now...

Khloé Kardashian has revealed her real feelings about Donald Trump and her 2009 appearance Celebrity Apprentice.
"I didn't care to do Celebrity Apprentice," Kardashian, 32, said during an appearance on Chelsea Handler's Netflix talk show Chelsea. "My mom made me do it."
More than indifference, the reality star said that she strongly disliked the show, as it was a far stretch from anything that would happen to her in real life and added stress to Kardashian's already hectic life.
"I hated every minute of it. I was put in situations I would never be in in real life," she said, adding...

Saying the words "Friar's Club" without scaring away millennials who only speak in memes. Making the celeb in the chair feel honored, but just humbled enough to not jump out a window. Showcasing TV-friendly material that has enough foul language to make Quentin Tarantino blush: The comedic roast walks a whole lot of fine lines -- it's just part of the delicate mix of sick burns, underhanded compliments, and unthinkable vocabulary that makes up the cocktail. But sometimes when you shake that cocktail, it explodes right in your face. Pause to remember five roasts that did just that, and had viewers wincing between the laughs all the way.
Justin Bieber: Too Fast, Too Furious, Too Soon

The act of telling a joke sometimes means taking an audience to the edge of good taste, and for some comedians, pushing them right over the line. And for those who are truly taking risks, it can mean courting controversy, but are some people too easily offended? Should comedians apologize if their jokes go too far? Should some people simply stay away from material they know will push their buttons? All those questions get tackled in "Can We Take A Joke?" screening at the upcoming Doc NYC festival. Read More: Doc NYC Exclusive: Start The Journey With A Clip From 'I Am Sun Mu' Directed by Ted Balaker, and featuring Gilbert Gottfried, Adam Carolla, Lisa Lampanelli, Penn Jillette, and more, the film offers a thought-provoking and wry exploration of outrage culture through the lens of stand-up comedy, in the age of social media, where the ability to organize a groundswell...

It's a situation that haunts all of our nightmares: You're gossiping about a friend (or frenemy) of yours via text, only to discover that you've actually sent that gossipy text to the very person you're gossiping about.
Well, comedian Lisa Lampanelli lived out that very horror during the fifth season of Celebrity Apprentice – also known that year as Celebrity Fight Club because Lampanelli "hated everyone" – when she sent a text gossiping about costar Teresa Giudice to teammate Aubrey O'Day … only to find that the message didn't reach its intended recipient.
After a makeup artist on set mentioned to Lampanelli that...

Lisa Lampanelli has a few announcements in her new special "Back to the Drawing Board," which premieres on Epix tonight at 10 p.m. Est. She's lost over 100 pounds and has kept it off for three years. She's mad that a known date rapist didn't make a move on her. And she's still unapologetic about and thrilled to reiterate everything -- everything -- she says. The loudmouthed comic most known for her bawdy insults at Comedy Central's roasts is a consummate professional. She engages audiences, reels them in with honesty, then sandblasts them with grotesque jokes. We caught up with Lampanelli to discuss her joke-writing process, her heroes, and what she thinks of her old "Celebrity Apprentice" boss Donald Trump. How does producing a standup special feel different than other times you perform? The only thing different -- because it literally feels no different, having done this so long --...

She lost 107 pounds, but didn’t lose her sense of humor (and why would she?) — Lisa Lampanelli, otherwise known as the “Queen of Mean,” still hilarious as ever, has gone Back to the Drawing Board in her latest comedy special, premiering tonight (June 26) on Epix at 10pm Et/Pt (9pm Ct). The hourlong special is the comedienne’s fifth stand-up special, and nobody is safe. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Lampanelli, she’s brash, vulgar, and she makes fun of pretty much every minority group out there. I doubt many people could get away with saying what she … Continue reading →

Comedian Lisa Lampanelli, who has a new stand-up special, Back to the Drawing Board, coming out June 26 on Epix, has been learning to release her pent-up emotions. In a conversation with Ron Bennington at the 92nd Street Y Monday night, Lampanelli talked about how in the past, her first reaction to a negative situation was anger. One time the Ritz-Carlton had sent her the wrong food, so she called the front desk and asked, “Where am I calling?” When the concierge answered, “Ritz-Carlton,” Lampanelli replied, “Oh, I thought it was a Super 8 'cause the fucking order’s wrong!” Now she checks into hotels with an apology: “Hi, how are you? Did I yell at you last time I was here? 'Cause if I did, I’m really sorry!” When Bennington asked her where the anger issues stemmed from, Lampanelli said it was a “cover-up emotion.” Instead, she’s been “stuffing...

Lisa Lampanelli, Improv Shakespeare, and Actor's Express takes on "The Whale." It's this week's Atlanta Events Roundup. Lisa Goes WildLisa Lampanelli, comedy’s Queen of Mean and equal-opportunity offender on Howard Stern’s Sirius radio show, will be at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, May 30, at 8 pm. Lampanelli describes herself as a cross between Don Rickles, Archie Bunker, and a vial of estrogen, so make sure to leave the kids at home. Shakespeare without a NetPerforming Shakespeare is tough enough, but making up Shakespeare as thou goest? ‘Tis madness! Yet that's exactly what the actors will do in "Shakespeare, Unscripted." Based on a few suggestions from the audience, actors will spontaneously create an improvised play in the style of theater from Elizabethan England. It all takes place this Saturday, May 30 at 8 pm at the Highwire Comedy Company. A Whale of a ShowWe recently profiled Freddie Ashley, Artistic Director at Actor’s Express.

Tonight, The Roast of Justin Bieber will air on Comedy Central and the masses will get what they’ve long been waiting for: a public shaming of Justin Bieber. Of course, some of the special’s most notable put-downs of the pop star have been publicized, including insults from the likes of Roast master Kevin Hart (“Justin’s Canadian.
