★★★☆☆Unlike recent pioneering archive-led offerings such as Penny Woolcock's British Sea Power collaboration From the Sea to the Land Beyond and John Akomfrah's The Stuart Hall Project, Paul Kelly's How We Used to Live (2013) isn't a great deal more than what it appears at first glance - an audiovisual document of a London now consigned to history. This is vérité at its most refined, with occasional interjections from Ian McShane kept to a bare minimum in order to allow rolls of colour footage from the BFI National Archive to do the talking. As such, there's not a huge amount to be gleaned from Kelly's collage other than what we see, with the film as a whole peaking and troughing.

Earlier this year, Av Festival in Newcastle was the destination of many durational documentary enthusiasts (admittedly a niche market): a meaty Wang Bing retrospective was screened over several days. For all who are unfamiliar with the Chinese documentarian’s work, he has a tight catalogue of epic films such as West of the Tracks and Crude Oil that are in excess of ten hours apiece, which seek to tell objective stories of diminishing local labour or of nomadic existence in the great wilds of China and Mongolia. More palatable docs, while containing a similar gaze, have been delivered to us in recent years by Ron Fricke (namely Baraka and Samsara).
Director Thomas Balmès’ interest in cross-cultural filmmaking has allowed him to scaffold a bridge between these two styles of documentary: employing a lingering, dewy-eyed camera to portray stunning landscapes and untouched panoramas while telegraphing easy-to-watch glimpses of silent societies.

From superhero movies to techy sitcoms to captains of industry, geeks have been running the show for years. But now that 'geek chic' is in the dictionary, and Topshop is selling 'dork' T-shirts, what is the future for nerd culture?

Sheffield International Documentary Festival, or – if you’re into the whole brevity thing – DocFest, is 20 years old.
To mark the anniversary of one of the most dynamic and interesting festivals in the world, the organisers have pulled out all the stops. Kicking things off this year are 3 stunning opening night events; The Big Melt – a film celebrating the Sheffield Steel Industry with a live score written by the Steel City’s favourite son Jarvis Cocker and performed by Cocker, Richard Hawley and The Sheffield Brass Band (among others) promises to be quite something; The Summit – a film about the perils of climbing K2 is being screened deep underground in the Peak District’s most evocatively named cave, The Devil’s Arse and finally, a screening of Sundance World Cinema Documentary Award Winner Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer, which – tantalisingly – features a Q&A with the non-incarcerated band members.

Your latest role is in Martin McDonagh's play The Cripple of Inishmaan. What made you want to play Billy, the "cripple" of the title?
Michael Grandage, the director, presented me with three or four plays, and as soon as I read Cripple there was no contest. I'm very much the tragic relief of this play: Billy has a few funny lines but a lot of the comedy comes out of people being incredibly cruel to my character. Which I'm very, very happy with. I've learned that I really enjoy stage violence. I was lucky enough to spend a lot of my lunchtimes as a child choreographing fight scenes on Potter. So I'm quite good at it: the stunt department always said that I bounce.

★★★★☆ Featuring prime cuts from the BFI's extensive National Archive and a typically soul-stirring soundtrack from acclaimed Brighton collective British Sea Power, director Penny Woolcock's lyrical visual collage From the Sea to the Land Beyond (2012) gets a live screening at Sundance London this week, having already wowed audiences at last year's Sheffield Doc/Fest. Effortlessly recalling British documentary filmmaking's heyday, Woolcock and Bsp have co-produced perhaps the definitive celebration of this nation's scenic coastline, cataloguing our obsession with 'ol' briney' from 1901 all the way through to the modern age.

For four days beginning Thursday 25 April, the London o2 in Greenwich hosts Robert Redford’s 2013 Sundance London Film and Music Festival, a celebration of independent cinema both home-grown and stateside, flavoured with live music performances, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions with filmmakers.

Bonds of all kinds are an overarching theme of the main programme, broken in divorce (A.C.O.D.) strengthened in friendship (The Kings of Summer and The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete) and unearthed in the unlikeliest of places (Emmanuel and the Truth About Fishes).

If familial bonds recur frequently throughout the selection, there’s none more unconventional than that between smut baron...

Dead By Dawn | Secret Cinema | Sundance London | I'm So Excited
Dead By Dawn, Edinburgh
The horror festival celebrates its 20th anniversary with a smorgasbord of fresh meat, rancid offal and high-speed pass the parcel (no, really). Veteran gore-merchant Frank Henenlotter presents two of his disgusting classics, Basket Case and Brain Damage, and there's a spread of dependable favourites like Evil Dead II, Hellraiser, The Brood and An American Werewolf In London. Among the newer stuff, a comet unleashes alien/zombie havoc in Paris in Dead Shadows; pottery and backwoods superstition collide in Jug Face; and Vanessa Redgrave features in The Last Will And Testament Of Rosalind Leigh as a voice from beyond the grave.
Filmhouse, Thu to 28 Apr
Secret Cinema, London
Their motto is "tell no-one", but most people who've been to Secret Cinema want to tell everyone. They get bigger and better every time. Last year's Shawshank Redemption screening saw punters sentenced,...

London – Indie rockers British Sea Power is the latest music act to sign up to play at this year's Sundance London film and music festival. The band will hit the stage April 28 to perform their original score composed for From the Sea to the Land Beyond. The band will be playing live to a screening of the film. Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars
Release Date: April 1, 2013
The fifth album (or sixth, depending on if you count a film score or not) from eccentric indie rockers British Sea Power is a frustrating piece of work that makes one begin to wonder what kind of band British Sea Power want to be at this stage in their career. It has been ten years since their stellar debut album, which came out at the denouement of the post-punk/garage rock revival scene of the early noughties. While there were definite traces of that scene to be found throughout, British Sea Power showcased a much more art-rock influenced sound than their peers. Their sound took an unexpected turn with the follow-up, 2005′s Open Season. The bits and pieces of garage rock had been completely eschewed, replaced with tighter songwriting and a poppier sound overall. Since then, the band seems to have been in...

British Sea Power have announced details of their fifth studio album and a UK tour. The band release Machineries of Joy on April 1 via Rough Trade Records. "We'd like to think the album is warm and restorative," said singer Yan. "Various things are touched on in the words - Franciscan monks, ketamine, French female bodybuilders turned erotic movie stars. "The world often seems a mad, hysterical place at the moment. You can't really be oblivious to that, but we'd like the record to be an antidote - a nice game of cards in pleasant company." The follow-up to 2010's Valhalla Dancehall was written in North Wales's (more)...

Django | American Mary | From The Sea To The Land Beyond | The Sweeney | Above The Street, Below The Water
Django
This Django, the 1966 original, may not be unchained but it is uncut, retaining all the infamous grislier moments as it finally arrives on Blu-ray.
Other than Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy, Sergio Corbucci's Django is the key title in the Italian western genre, making a star of Franco Nero and spawning countless unofficial remakes and sequels; the Tarantino movie is really just part of a long line of movies that take the Django name (along with, in this instance, the theme song, a cameo by Nero, and the rampant bloodlust). In Japan and Germany the Django name would be attached to almost all Franco Nero movies – even his Jaws rip-off, The Shark Hunter, was renamed Django Django for some markets. The entertaining Django, Prepare A Coffin starring Terence Hill has...

Lately I've been seeing commercials for some of the new shows that are coming out this summer/next fall (never too early to start the ad campaign, right? Wrong.) and on one hand I'm excited that I'll have something new to write about for a brief shining moment before I reach the point that I don't have anything to say about it except "Hey, look, it's that shit again, some more." Also I'm having fun observing certain entertainment trends pass around from movies to television shows before everyone decides they're a bad idea and abandons them. Right now, we're in what I like to call the "Alien cycle" with the full on alien entries of "V" and the upcoming "Falling Lights" on TV as well as the possibly aliens but no one's really sure "The Event" which is still on for reasons I can't fathom. I think we're approaching the...

Rockers British Sea Power are donating proceeds from a new band T-shirt and sew-on badge to help finance a charitable arctic expedition.
The group has lent its name to geologist Gareth Ellis' team, which is entering the 350-mile (563-kilometre) Polar Challenge race to the North Pole.
The British Sea Power Team 2008 is taking part in the race, which begins in April, to raise money for Polar Bear International Research and the U.K.'s National Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Children.
The T-shirt and sew-on patch are available to buy on British Sea Power's website.
