A couple months ago, the Shudder streaming service announced that they would be releasing the survival thriller Quicksand in the US, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand on June 23rd… but those plans have now changed. Quicksand‘s has moved back to July 14th, while June 23rd will see the Shudder release of the creature feature Unwelcome.
Directed by Andrés Beltrán (MalaYerba) from a screenplay by Matt Pitts (Fringe), Quicksand stars Carolina Gaitán, who provided the voice of Pepa in Disney’s Encanto, and Allan Hawco of Jack Ryan. The English-language thriller was filmed in the Colombian capital Bogota and tells the story of a married couple on the brink of divorce who become trapped in quicksand while hiking through a Colombian rainforest. It’s a struggle for survival as they battle the elements of the jungle and must work together in order to escape.

Shout! Studios presents The Magic Flute by Florian Zigl, executive produced by Roland Emmerich, at 325 theaters with expansion likely. A reimagining of the Mozart opera, it follows a present-day teen sent from London to the Austrian Alps on singing scholarship at the legendary Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a century old forgotten passageway into the magical world of Mozart’s famed opera.
This Harry Potter-ish adventure fantasy stars Jack Wolfe as Tim Walker, who passes from school into the world of the opera and its many adventures as hero Prince Tamino. Wide releases may be picking up steam and Scream, but in terms of new specialty, and family fare, these isn’t much new competition this weekend.
Melissa Boag, EVP of Family Entertainment at Shout! Studios, hopes it will play with fans of magical adventure, Harry Potter, and classical music. Wolfe is a star of Netflix YA series Shadow & Bone.

Grabbers director Jon Wright’s latest, Unwelcome, blends modernism with Irish mythology. Described in a pitch as “Gremlins meets Straw Dogs,” Unwelcome introduces the far darrig, tiny bloodthirsty fae also dubbed redcaps for their signature red hats. Yet Wright, who co-wrote with screenwriter Mark Stay, struggles to find a consistent tone. The emphasis on gritty home invasion thriller clashes with the lighter horror-comedy creature feature.
Elation turns to trauma when a pregnancy celebration between Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) and her husband, Jamie (Douglas Booth), morphs into a harrowing home invasion nightmare. Jamie then conveniently inherits a house in rural Ireland, giving the couple the perfect opportunity to flee their dangerous London neighborhood. The locals are welcoming, though superstitious; Maya placates her neighbor (Niamh Cusack) with promises to continue the tradition of leaving proper blood sacrifices at the edge of their garden to appease the far darrig. Remembering to uphold her commitment...

Unwelcome is a horror movie directed by Jon Wright starring Hannah John-Kamen and Douglas Booth.
A mixture of horror and local bright spots that, as it progresses, stops being “scary” to introduce us to “something else” that, although it will not be that surprising, it is quite interesting.
The creatures that appear will be quite familiar to you (whether or not they resemble the Critters is up to you).
Movie Review Unwelcome (2023)
For a B-movie, it has its merits in some places, especially in terms of cinematography. It knows how to maintain its tone of a fable and coherently interconnect the protagonist landscape with the narrative and the personal dramas of each one. The acting is fine, but no one here is exactly going to win an Oscar.
As for the horror story, it gets somewhat blurred as soon as the “protagonists” of the story appear (we will not give...

This article contains major Unwelcome spoilers.
British horror Unwelcome sees city couple Maya (Hannah-John Kamen) and Jamie (Douglas Booth) move to Ireland after a horrific home invasion leaves them shaken. But the new rural home isn’t the peaceful idyll they had hoped for, with a baby on the way. If the violent local family hired to do some building work weren’t enough, they also have murderous Redcaps to deal with. It’s a lot.
“It started originally from a conversation I had with Mark Stay, who wrote the film,” says director Jon Wright. “We were kind of almost making fun of each other, and making fun of ourselves really about what cowards we were, and how, if we were ever confronted with physical violence, how frightening we found it, and how useless we were at fighting. We were saying that being a pacifist is really a kind of...

His latest film, Unwelcome, adds more monsters to his menagerie, in an effective genre offering that plays like Straw Dogs meets Gremlins, by way of Leprechaun.

With its polyfoam beasties and diddly-dee charm, the latest from comedy-horror specialist Jon Wright sustains suspense amid silliness
The 90s straight-to-video horror series Leprechaun was rebooted a few years back, but this is better. A young London couple expecting their first child escape inner-city dystopia for a diddly-dee Irish village when one inherits their aunt’s country pile. However, such unearned property wealth can never go unpunished – especially not in a housing crisis – and inevitably there’s a catch. Local folklore tells of “little people” – definitely not leprechauns – at the end of the garden, who’ll turn nasty if they don’t get their nightly blood offering.
Man of the house Jamie (Douglas Booth) fears he may not be man enough for this particular house. That leaves his heavily pregnant wife Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) alone to fend off all manner of local threats, including, but not limited to, the Whelans,...

Alright, alright, settle down now. Settle down. I’ve got something to tell you. A lot of you know what I’m about to say. Some of you might sense what’s coming. Regardless, let’s all take a knee.

Okay.

I know. It hurts. We’re super old and it’s a problem. Kids who were born the day Shaun came out are in secondary school. They’ve probably hit puberty. They’re feeling weird feelings about each other that they can’t explain. Their parents are probably starting to piss them off. Their parents who are probably us. We could be the parents of...

Film directors and their crew discuss the techniques and approaches to capturing fruitiness on the big (and small) screen...
John Badham has written a couple of excellent books where he passed on advice about directing movies, and the lessons he's learned across his own career. In the latest, John Badham On Directing, he raises the spectre of filming sex scenes, and the problems that ensue.
Actors get really spooked when it comes to intimacy in a scene, even kissing", he wrote. "This is where the director has to be extremely patient with the actors and know that the emotional or intimate part of scenes don’t always shoot as easily as the production department thinks they should. The actors are not robots on a Toyota assembly line".
But just how do different filmmakers approach putting intimacy on film? In lots of different ways, is the answer...

Sci-fi series to be overseen by longtime Coronation Street producer Tony Wood.
Robot Overlords, the UK sci-fi feature starring Gillian Anderson and Ben Kingsley, is to get a spin-off TV series overseen by Tony Wood’s Buccaneer Media.
The agreement, signed with Piers Tempest and Jo Bamford’s Tempo Productions who produced the movie, will see Buccaneer Media create a TV series set in a parallel universe to the original movie, which features a group of survivors following the invasion of Earth by alien robots.
Robert Overlords director Jon Wright announced the adaptation at McM London Comic Con.
Wood is a British drama producer that worked on long-running soap Coronation Street for 12 years as well as Desi Rascals and Nickelodeon’s live action kid’s series House of Anubis.

Robot Overlords took over our cinema screens back in March and now, according to the film’s director Jon Wright, the malignant mechanicals have their beady laser eyes on our tellies. Yes, they’re targeting a small screen spin-off. Wright announced the news at the McM London Comic Con, with word that Tony Wood (a veteran of Coronation Street among other things) will oversee the new show for Piers Tempest and Jo Bamford’s Tempo Productions, who were behind the film in the first place. “This series will really expand the canvas of the robot occupation and we are aiming to make an explosive show that the UK will be very proud of.”Though the film had Gillian Anderson, Ben Kingsley, Callan McAuliffe, James Tarpey and Ella Hunt among its cast, the show will boast a new ensemble and might also march on to TV under a different name. According to wood,...

★★☆☆☆ At a point in Jon Wright's Robot Overlords (2014), Robin Smythe - the film's human Big Bad played by Ben Kingsley - asks "You know what 'chav' stands for? Council house and violent." It's delivered in an unsure northern accent that straddles the uneasy border between old foes Lancashire and Yorkshire (particularly odd given that he's from Salford). It's a strange socialrealist beat to put in Robot Overlords, which is otherwise a Children's Film Foundation lark with sometimes impressive special effects and super-sized ambitions on a modest budget. Robots from outer space have taken over our planet. The paranoid androids have also taken the liberty of attaching electronic devices to the necks of the populous.

So much to love in this Brit kiddie sci-fi adventure, with its brilliant concept that really works on a small budget and a real sense of place. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a big ol’ sci-fi geek

So much to love in this Brit kiddie sci-fi adventure! It’s like classic Doctor Who — you know, like we haven’t gotten much of lately — except without the Doctor, of course. It’s a Ya postapocalyptic adventure not based on a book (it’s an original story). It’s set after the alien invasion, which is when, I’ve always felt, all the really interesting stories exist to be told and yet we haven’t seen many of them. And the AI ETs aren’t here for the water.

Fancy a TV show exploring the Earth under the rule of robots? Robot Overlords will be heading to the smaller screen in due course...
In UK cinemas today is Robot Overlords, a fun and tense family movie, set in a world that's been under robot occupation for three years. The film centres on a quartet of young performers, and it's a welcome and effective homage to the kind of family movies we got in the 1980s. Our full review is here.
And now we learn that more Robot Overlords is on the way. Whilst not ruling out future movie sequels, should the new film do well, director Jon Wright told us that " it's looking very likely that we're going to turn Robot Overlords into a high-end TV series".

Jon Wright on directing Robot Overlords, working with Ben Kingsley and Gillian Anderson, and why he made an 80s-style family film.
Three films in, and Jon Wright is very much a director whose output is worth keeping an eye on. His first full feature, Tormented, was an effective horror with some strong moments, but it was Grabbers where he really struck gold. It remains, along with Tucker & Dale Vs Evil, our favourite horror comedy of recent times. Wright has taken a different turn for his new movie, Robot Overlords, a sci-fi movie aimed at a family audience. And he spared us some time to natter about it...
Can you put into words how you're feeling, on the eve of your film's release?
Well, I'm a bit nervous about the release, as you would be. Hoping it goes well. And I'm reading all the press that people are writing, which I actually think is very interesting.

With Robot Overlords out in cinemas this week, Gillian Anderson chats to us about family movies, sci-fi, and her love of Studio Ghibli.
Robot Overlords is the new film from director Jon Wright, who previously gave the world Tormented, and the terrific Grabbers. It's a throwback of sorts to the kind of movies we got for families in the 1980s, and his impressive cast is anchored by Gillian Anderson and Sir Ben Kingsley. UK cinema in 2015 has plenty to recommend it. Here are 36 UK films of all genres to look forward to this year…
Dig past the litterfall of Kray Brothers biopics and tales of nubile teens on camping trips gone wrong, and you’ll unearth plenty for the UK film industry to boast about in 2015. From sci-fi romps and thrillers like Robot Overlords and Ex Machina to dramas like High-Rise, comedies like War On Everyone, spy flicks like Spectre and kids’ films like Bill, there’s no shortage of inventive, highly promising cinema coming from these isles.
We’ve included a few choice co-productions in 2015’s pick of the year’s most interesting-looking pictures, which bolsters our list in both size and breadth (and mostly means we Brits can claim partial credit for ace-sounding dystopian flick The Lobster).
In alphabetical order then, here are the 36 UK (or UK-ish) movies we’re excited about seeing this year…...

"It's set in a small seaside town,” Wright tells Empire, “where you’d have seen Emily Lloyd in Wish You Were Here once upon a time – not where you’d expect to see two-storey robots.”Those draconian robots, the clanking, by-now slightly rusting menace, have ceaselessly patrolled a technology-bereft Earth for three long years,...

Toplined by Gillian Anderson and Ben Kingsley (and, of course, some UK teens), Robot Overlords might just be the popcorn movie to watch out for in 2015. Oh yeah, and another thing, it's directed by Jon Wright who's last film, Grabbers (review), was easily one of the best monster comedies in recent memory so this just rocketed to the top of my must-see list.
Synopsis:
Earth has been conquered by robots from a distant galaxy; survivors are confined to their houses and must wear electronic implants, risking incineration by robot sentries if they venture outside.
In robot-occupied Britain, city centres are devastated and a gang of teenagers live in a seaside tow [Continued ...]...

Some films just come out of nowhere, and the trailer for one such project has arrived. The selling point? It's Gillian Anderson and Ben Kingsley taking on robot oppressors. Jon Wright, the filmmaker behind the solidly regarded indie creature feature "Grabbers," has co-written and directed the $21 million-budget "Robot Overlords".
Callan McAuliffe ("I Am Number Four," "Kite") leads the cast of this teen-skewing film in which Earth has been conquered by alien robots with human survivors essentially under house arrest - if they leave, an electronic implant will alert the robots who will then target them for incineration.
Amongst this, a gang of teenagers figure out how to deactivate theirs and head off in search of a father who has gone missing. Embankment Films is slated to release the film on March 19th in the United Kingdom.

Two years ago, director Jon Wright stepped behind the camera for the fantastic Irish sci-fi comedy Grabbers. Now, he's back directing and co-writing, along with Mark Stay, the wonderfully high concept Robot Overlords. Starring Callan McAuliffe, Ben Kingsley, and Gillian Anderson, the movie sees the world conquered by robots from another galaxy, and the human race becoming slaves to their new robot masters. The first trailer is as crazy as the synopsis suggests, features some fantastic FX works, and the whole thing promises to big crazy fun. Check it out below. Robot Overlords hits cinemas in Ireland and the U.K. on 19th March 2015...

From British director Jon Wright, the man behind the underrated 2012 monster flick Grabbers, comes another assault on Britain. This time it’s not from a glut of creepy crawlies, but a load of massive Transformers-inspired ‘bots in Robot Overlords.
Before you immediately resign it to the dustbin of your mind, take a gander at who’s involved: Gillian Anderson and Ben Kingsley. Both are respected actors with decorated resumes, so it does strike one as odd that both would take on roles in a low-budget genre romp.
Regardless, the film is gearing up the marketing monster in time for its release next spring with this first trailer, which is strangely compelling. Michael Bay’s “buzzy robot” sounds bray out every few seconds to the sight of the towering behemoths marching across the English countryside. Set in the near-future wherein the planet has been commandeered by robots from another galaxy,...
