David Robert Mitchell (It Follows) is directing a genre movie for J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot that’s so secretive we didn’t even have a title. Until now. And we also have a release date!
Deadline reports today that the mysterious event movie from Bad Robot and David Robert Mitchell is titled Flowervale Street, with an IMAX release date set for May 16, 2025.
Now that we have a title and a release date, what about a plot synopsis? Well, that part is still a secret. We have literally no idea what Flowervale Street is about at this time, but we’d like to at least recklessly speculate that it’s a Cloverfield Universe movie. It’s more than likely not, mind you – this is a Warner Bros. Pictures project versus a Paramount release, for starters – but there’s just something about that title that feels very… 10 Cloverfield Lane, isn’t there?...

As a result of elections that took place this year from June 5-9, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 55-person board of governors convenes in July, more than one-fifth of its seats will be occupied by people who were not a part of it in June.
This is the result not of a repudiation of incumbents — in fact, no incumbent who could have sought reelection opted not to, and no incumbent who sought reelection lost — but rather of stricter term limits that the board imposed upon itself in recent years.
For the 2023-24 term, the board — which is composed of three governors representing each of the Academy’s 18 branches except for the newly created production/technology branch, which has just one, plus three “governors at large” — will be joined by 11 rookie governors: Wendy Aylsworth (production/technology branch), David I. Actor Lou Diamond Phillips, documentary filmmaker Simon Kilmurry and writer Dana Stevens are among the 11 film professionals who have been elected to the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy announced on Thursday.
Those new governors are part of a wholesale makeover of the AMPAS board prompted by new term limits imposed last year. In 10 of the 11 branches where first-time governors were elected, the incumbent governors were unable to run again because of those new limits, which restrict governors to two consecutive three-year terms. Last year, when those limits were instituted, 10 governors were termed off the board and 12 first-time governors were elected.
This year’s election means that 23 of the 55 members of the board will be in their first or second term.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced its newly elected Board of Governors. The governors, who set the Academy’s strategic vision and watch out for the organization’s financial health, will take office at the first scheduled board meeting of the new term. Wednesday the board voted to expand theatrical release requirements in order to qualify for Best Picture eligibility.
Directors branch member Ava DuVernay is back on the 55-member 2023-2024 Academy Board of Governors. So is producer Lynette Howell Taylor. The incumbents stay, while the ones who have served their three-year term move on, to be replaced by someone else. And, after three terms, like those served by Charles Bernstein and Jon Bloom, they are permanently termed off.

The Blue Angels, a feature documentary from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and Imax about the storied U.S. Navy and Marine Corps flight squadron from the cockpit, has landed at Amazon Studios.
The documentary, also from Glen Powell’s Barnstorm Productions, Zipper Bros Films and Dolphin Entertainment, has not yet set its release plans after Amazon Studios picked up the worldwide rights. But The Blue Angels will screen in Imax theaters at some point, while the doc is also expected to get play on Amazon’s Prime Video.
The Blue Angels uses Imax cameras to follow a year in the life of the Blue Angels from training through their touring show season. Imax got its start in making films for museums, science centers and other institutional partners before the Canadian-based company branched out into digitally remastering and screening Hollywood tentpoles on its large format screens after they were often shot using its proprietary cameras.

Best Foreign Language Feature winner “All Quiet on the Western Front” won the Oscar crafts battle Sunday night, grabbing three prizes out of six for cinematography, production design, and score. That ties “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” for the most craft Oscar wins for an international feature. Edward Berger’s World War I epic from Netflix was also nominated for makeup/hairstyling, sound, and VFX.
Shockingly, Baz Luhrmann’s delirious musical biopic, “Elvis,” was blanked after also receiving six nominations, highlighted by Mandy Walker’s cinematography and the costume and production design of four-time Oscar winner Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge!”). It was a particularly missed opportunity for Walker to break the glass ceiling again after her historic ASC victory. London-based PR maven Matthew Freud, joined by fellow Brit and collaborator Charlie Mackesy, offered his apologies for winning the Oscar for Short Film (Animated) for The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse.
“I’ve never made a film before, so this is bewildering,” Freud said in accepting the trophy. “I know the protocol is to say ‘thank you’ a lot, but I’m British, so I’m more comfortable saying ‘sorry.’ So, I’m really sorry to all the people who should be on this stage with us,” alluding to the large crew and voice cast who teamed up for two years during Covid to make the film. Freud closed by quipping that he was “also really sorry to my children, my girlfriend and my colleagues at [PR firm] Freuds for basically being absent over the last two years.”
The Boy came into Oscar night as a heavy favorite in the category.

The moving Oscar-nominated animated short The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, based on the illustrated book of the same name by British artist Charlie Mackesy, wasn’t initially planned as a published work or a film but rather began as a series of drawings in early 2018 that he posted on his Instagram account (now with a 1.7 million following), featuring the four titular characters and their musings about kindness, hope, friendship and courage.
For instance, in one drawing on Instagram — which is also featured in the short — the boy asks, “What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” The horse replies, “Help.” Mackesy began to post more of his drawings and was moved by the response. “Everyone was discussing their feelings and what was difficult and what they hoped for,” the director tells THR.

All Quiet on the Western Front made good on its record number of BAFTA nominations with a major haul of wins at the film awards ceremony on Sunday night.

Away from the Western Front, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin won four awards, including half the performance honors, with Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan landing supporting wins. Elsewhere, Austin Butler won leading actor for Elvis, and Cate Blanchett leading actress for Tar.

Akiva Goldsman’s production company Weed Road recently had film and TV deals at MGM, but now that MGM executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy have moved over to Warner Bros., intending to give the studio’s theatrical franchise output a boost, Weed Road has followed them. Deadline reports that Weed Road has signed a multi-year first look deal with Warner Bros… and since Goldsman has already done a lot of work for the studio over the decades, he sees this deal as a bit of a homecoming. With Weed Road now calling Warner Bros. home, the top priority for the companies are a pair of projects they were already working on together: sequels to the 2005 comic book adaptation Constantine (which Goldsman produced) and the 2007 Richard Matheson adaptation I Am Legend (which Goldsman produced and co-wrote).

We learned last year that Warner Bros. was developing a long-belated sequel to Constantine, but that was a very different time. Since then, James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken over DC Studios, which has led to the cancellation of a handful of projects that don’t fit into the new universe. Rumours began circulating last week that Constantine 2 had suffered a similar fate, but thankfully that’s not the case.
A Warner Bros. spokesperson reached out to Entertainment Weekly to confirm that Constantine 2 has not been scrapped. That said, little has been heard about the Constantine sequel, but as the new DC Universe slate includes a Swamp Thing movie, it stands to reason that James Gunn isn’t avoiding the darker aspects of the franchise.

It was officially announced last year that Constantine 2 is finally happening with Keanu Reeves coming back to play DC’s John Constantine for an official sequel to the 2005 movie, but you may be wondering if those plans have changed now that James Gunn and Peter Safran are restructuring the DC Cinematic Universe. The good news? Yes, it’s still happening!
“A spokesperson for Warner Bros. confirmed to EW that Constantine 2 is not scrapped,” Entertainment Weekly just reported today, squashing rumors to the contrary.
No word yet on whether Constantine 2 will be part of the mainline DC Universe or if it will exist in the “Elseworlds” space, but for now it’s great to hear that it’s still in the works.

Almost three years ago, J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot acquired the supernatural revenge thriller spec script The Pinkerton penned by Daniel Casey (10 Cloverfield Lane, Kin). Now, it finally has a director attached.
Deadline reports that Jason Bateman (The Gift, “The Outsider”) is set to direct the “supernatural revenge-western hybrid.”
Plot details remain under wraps at present, but the title is derived from the historical “private security guard and detective agency established in the U.S. by Scotsman Allan Pinkerton in 1850. Pinkerton became famous when he claimed to have foiled a plot to assassinate president-elect Abraham Lincoln, who later hired Pinkerton agents for his personal security during the Civil War.”
The Pinkerton marks the first film project to be produced for Bad Robot after Warner Bros signed a deal with the production company. We expect that it’ll remain shrouded in mystery throughout production. Bateman previously helmed the dramedy Bad Words,...

A hot property that J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot acquired two years ago has finally found its director, according to Deadline. Actor, comedian, and filmmaker Jason Bateman is set to step behind the camera for "The Pinkerton," which will be the first original film project to come from Bad Robot's reported 250 million deal with WarnerMedia.
News of "The Pinkerton" first broke in early March 2020, when it was announced that "Kin" and "F9" screenwriter Daniel Casey was working on the script for the project. Given the obviously inauspicious timing of that announcement, it makes sense that it's taken "The Pinkerton" a while to get off the ground. Now, though, Bateman is set to return to feature directing for the first time since 2015 to helm what's being called a "supernatural revenge-Western hybrid," per Deadline.

Jason Bateman is partnering with Warner Bros. and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot for The Pinkerton. No, this isn’t a making-of-documentary about Weezer’s 1996 sophomore album. The project is an original feature about Pinkertons, which Bloomberg says is a private security guard and detective agency founded around 1850 in the United States by Scottish-born flatfoot Allan Pinkerton and Chicago attorney Edward Rucker. Initially known as the North-Western Police Agency, the outfit became Pinkerton & Co., then the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.
The Pinkerton is the first project from a deal between Bad Robot and Warner Bros. In addition to directing the film, Bateman is executive producing with Michael Costigan. Abrams and Hannah Minghella also produce through Bad Robot.
According to Pinkerton, the group saved president-elect Abraham Lincoln from an assassination attempt before the famous leader of the United States took office. Thankful for the save, Lincoln hired the Pinkertons as his security guards during his presidency.

Jason Bateman has added another film to his growing list of directorial obligations. And this one sounds fun.
TheWrap has confirmed that Bateman has signed on to direct “The Pinkerton,” from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Based on a spec script by Daniel Casey (“F9”). This marks the first feature project since Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. signed a lucrative, 250 million deal in 2019. Bateman will also produce “The Pinkerton” alongside Michael Costigan and Bad Robot’s Abrams and Hannah Minghella.
While details on the script aren’t known, it is said to be a supernatural Western revenge movie. The Pinkerton Detective Agency, as it is now known, was established in 1850 by a Scottish-born abolitionist named Allan Pinkerton. Pinkerton claimed to have foiled the 1861 plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln (known as the Baltimore Plot), who then hired the group as spies and his personal security force during the Civil War.
