[Editor’s note: Spoilers follow for “Dietland” Season 1, Episode 3, “Y Not.”]
When IndieWire first spoke to “Dietland” creator Marti Noxon about her new AMC dark comedy, she mentioned a number of influences on the show. But while the premise has elicited more than one comparison to a lady version of “Fight Club,” Noxon’s go-to inspiration was “The Wizard of Oz,” specifically in how it visually represented the journey of self-discovery for Plum (Joy Nash).
“When I kept talking about visual references, I was like, I don’t want it to be one of these gray shows,” she said. “I don’t want it to be all blue saturated. I want it to be like a technicolor. It has a kind of musical quality. There are drab places, but then there are these other places that are just hyper-colored. Adam Levine was attacked with a sugar bomb outside Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday evening.
The Maroon 5 singer was signing autographs for fans together with his fellow band members when he was hit with the powdered sugar, CNN reports.
Needless to say, Levine, 36, was not pleased. "It looked like he wanted to fight the guy," Laura Tijerina, who was in the crowd, told the network. "I think this guy had it planned. It was a brown bag with tape around it, which was weird.
She added: "I just saw powder everywhere. It was just so quick."
Levine was not hurt in the attack.

Two films forgotten by the Academy, the animated adventure "The Lego Movie" and the Roger Ebert Documentary "Life Itself," triumphed at the recently concluded 2015 Producers Guild Awards.
"The Lego Movie" took home the Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures for producer Dan Lin while "Life Itself" won the Award for Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures for producers Garrett Basch, Steve James, and Zak Piper.
Meanwhile, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, and James W. Skotchdopole took the Oscar glitter away from Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" when "Birdman" was awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures.

On Saturday evening the Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced this year’s winning motion picture, television, and new media productions at the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
In what’s become a most interesting awards season, Birdman took home the big award of the night. The Oscars look to be a two horse race between Boyhood and Birdman from all appearances.
The other PGA nominees were American Sniper, Boyhood, Foxcatcher, Gone Girl, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Nightcrawler, The Theory Of Everything and Whiplash.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony is Sunday, while the Directors Guild will announce it’s winners on Saturday, February 7.

Oscar-snubbed “Life Itself” and “The Lego Movie” win documentary and animation awards
“Birdman” was named the best-produced feature of 2014 at the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday night, giving the daring Alejandro Iñárritu film new life in the Oscar race for Best Picture.
“Boyhood” was considered the most likely PGA winner and the Oscar leader, but the critical favorite now finds itself in the same spot “The Social Network” was in four years ago. That film swept the critics’ awards and the Golden Globes, but then lost the PGA to “The King’s Speech,” which rode a string of guild wins to victory at the Oscars.

Ever since "The Hurt Locker" triumphed over "Avatar" at the 2010 Producers Guild Awards, it has been rather obvious to me that this precursor announcement is the skeleton key to understanding how the Oscar vote will likely play out. Why? Because — as we've noted a number of times — the PGA is the only group that shares the preferential ballot system the Academy employs. So what won this year? "Birdman" won, that's what. And for those who were chalking this up as a boring, telegraphed Oscar season… So, what does this mean for the rest of the season? It means, clearly, "Birdman" could well be poised to take the Best Picture Oscar next month. I, for one, thought "The Imitation Game" would be the one to unseat "Boyhood" this evening and assert itself as the industry favorite. I even thought "American Sniper" had an outside shot. I wasn't looking at "Birdman," though,...

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

Because it's NBC's turn to air the Primetime Emmy Awards this year, and because the Peacock would understandably rather air its lucrative Sunday night NFL package in September, the ceremony will take place in late August again. And as an added wrinkle, this year's ceremony will actually happen on a Monday, August 25 at 8 p.m., with Seth Meyers hosting. Between now and then, Dan and I will be making our picks for both who should and will win many of the major categories — if you're wagering, keep in mind that Dan tends to be much better at predicting the winners than I am, but also that he was just as flummoxed as I by last year's winners like Jeff Daniels, Merritt Wever and Bobby Cannavale — continuing with our look at the comedy and drama series directing categories. In my last review I called Taystee a “girl,” and although much of the episode focused on her in the present as an adult, I didn’t even think to pause on that small, yet important age distinction. Calling her “woman,” truly, never even entered my mind. So, the question is… why not? I mean, isn’t she well over 18? Isn’t she doing hard time, baring her soul at AA meetings, and winning mock job fairs? What else does a lady need to do to get some respect? But apparently, I was not totally wrong with my oversight after all—that is, at least, if we listen to new, yet experienced inmate, Vee.

A little whiplash never hurt anyone when it comes to entertainment, but it’s hard not to knock this episode down a few pegs after the delicious intensity that was “Thirsty Bird.” Though, if we needed some downtime, Taystee is a perfect character to spend it with, especially as a first-time flashbacker, and with the exciting prospect of getting to spend even more time with her down the road. In contrast to Piper, who courts controversy, Taystee is just simply likeable to everyone, even before we heard her story about waking up at a construction site with barbecue sauce on her breasts. Updated: Ethan Peck (10 Things I Hate About You), Eureka alum Ed Quinn and Hart Bochner (The Starter Wife) will co-star opposite Mary-Louise Parker in NBC’s single-camera comedy pilot Feed Me. Peck plays Ned, Emma’s terminally adolescent younger brother, a culinary artist who tries hard to bring some sophistication and modernity to his family’s decades old restaurant, but his menu changes only infuriate his dad. VH1 is expanding its scripted portfolio with Hindsight, handing out a 10-episode series pickup to the hourlong scripted drama pilot from writer Emily Fox (Jane By Design) and Timberman-Beverly for a premiere in early 2015. 30 Rock, Season 6, Episodes 3 & 4, “Idiots are People Three!” & “The Ballad of Kenneth Parcell”
“Idiots” Written by Robert Carlock, Directed by Beth McCarthy-Miller
“Ballad” Written by Matt Hubbard, Directed by Jeff Richmond
Airs Thursday at 8pm Et on NBC
It’s kind of disheartening to see the show has abandoned the new dynamic involving a happy Liz and a sentimental Jack it established in the pilot. Part two of “Idiots are People” was much stronger than part one, but after being teased with the possibility of Liz having a wonderful new boyfriend that was going to change her life, we’re firmly back in the familiar territory of Jack deriding Lemon’s poor taste in men. It’s amusing to watch as Jack break up with Liz’s boyfriend for her and it’s always fun when Devin Banks comes around, but these are very familiar scenes, tropes 30 Rock has turned to time and time again.

Kudos to the writers of Parks and Recreation for pulling off what will go down as one of the all-time best episodes of the NBC comedy series, one that threw off the audience's preconceptions of comedy narratives and shattered our expectations about how romantic comedy couples are meant to be handled. In this week's hilarious and emotionally resonant episode ("Fancy Party"), written by Katie Dippold and directed by Michael Trim, newly dating couple April and Andy got married. It wasn't a Very Special Episode. It wasn't preceded by NBC hitting us over the head with promos for a wedding site for April and Andy or forcing us to watch them shop for rings or make wedding plans, the writing team instead pulled the rug out from underneath the audience, transforming an episode about the unlikely couple hosting a dinner party into an impromptu wedding episode. It was unexpected and magical,...

Weeds "A Shoe for a Shoe" Season 6, Episode 6 Written By: David Holstein Directed By: Michael Trim In my recap of last week's episode "Boomerang," I mentioned how the cliffhanger at the end of the episode was most reminiscent of the one that concluded "Pittsburgh," the show's second season finale. One of the reasons why that cliffhanger was so effective in retrospect was how its game-changing elements were executed in the two-part season three premiere. "Doing the Backstroke" didn't try to tie up all the loose ends of the episode that...

HollywoodNews.com: The “Weeds” season six opener of “Thwack” unfortunately doesn’t live up to its pointed title, however, the good news is that creator Jenji Kohan is finally moving the Botwin family away from the Mexican border after they’ve overstayed the drama there for the last two seasons.
The episode, like many “Weeds” season openers, begins promptly after its finale’s riveting cliffhanger, but the pacing slows. Nancy gathers her chicks, err sons, after young teen Shane kills Pilar, the dastardly political consultant to her Mexican beau Esteban, with a croquet mallet. In season 5, Pilar was grooming Esteban as a candidate in the race for Mexico’s governor. She felt Nancy’s family was an unsavory part of his life. Thus, Pilar threatened to kill Shane and Silas.

Nancy gathers her chicks, err sons, after young teen Shane kills Pilar, the dastardly political consultant to her Mexican beau Esteban, with a croquet mallet.
