Renowned for her acting prowess, Angelina Jolie almost portrayed the historical figure Cleopatra in a film, which was ultimately canceled. Following the disastrous reception of Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1963 film, numerous filmmakers have expressed interest in bringing their vision of the Egyptian queen to the screen.

Jolie was attached to one such project, with directors like David Fincher and Ang Lee also being involved before its cancellation. Brian Helgeland, the original screenwriter of the film, has recently provided insight into the canceled film, describing it as a love affair epic infused with elements like political thriller, assassinations, and romance.

Hollywood has been trying to get another Cleopatra movie off the ground for quite some time, and one of those iterations was set to star Angelina Jolie as the iconic Egyptian Queen.
Brian Helgeland was the first writer to take a stab at Angelina Jolie’s Cleopatra movie, and he shared a few details while talking with Inverse. “I was the very first writer on Cleopatra when it was being developed for Angelina Jolie to star in, which was almost made,” Helgeland said. “I don’t have anything to do with the current version unless they call me and want to use my draft.“
Helgeland continued, saying the movie “had elements of a political thriller with assassinations and sex,” but at its heart, it was an epic split between Cleopatra’s love affairs with Caesar and Mark Antony. “Lots of true events surprised me when I was writing it. For example,...

“Dune” filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has a lot of options for what he could make next, and one of them could be his long-gestating “Cleopatra” movie based on the Stacy Schiff novel “Cleopatra: A Life” for Sony Pictures.
Before that, however, some may remember the era when filmmaker David Fincher had a version of the movie set up at Paramount, circa 2012, that would have starred Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie (long before the competing Gal Gadot incarnation with Patty Jenkins and Kari Skogland).

Long live Queen Cleopatra, even if her film adaptations have been plagued for more than half a century.
After Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s 1963 “Cleopatra” starring Elizabeth Taylor made history as one of the biggest box office disasters ever, a long-gestating adaptation was set with Angelina Jolie attached to star (and directors like David Fincher and Ang Lee being attached at different times). “A Knight’s Tale” and “Man on Fire” writer Brian Helgeland wrote the script, and while the film was “almost made,” it eventually fell by the wayside.
Now, Helgeland is recalling the details of the scrapped project in a new interview with Inverse. “I was the very first writer on ‘Cleopatra’ when it was being developed for Angelina Jolie to star in, which was almost made,” Helgeland said. “It had elements of a political thriller with assassinations and sex, but it’s an epic that’s divided between her...

It was announced six years ago that Denis Villeneuve would direct a Cleopatra movie for Sony Pictures. It’s been some time since we last heard about the project, but scooper Daniel Richtman believes that Villeneuve will finally start shooting the movie next year.
Not only that, but the report seems to indicate that Denis Villeneuve will be reuniting with his Dune stars as Zendaya is attached to star as Cleopatra. It adds that Timothée Chalamet has been offered the role of Octavius and Daniel Craig is being eyed for Caesar. Very interesting, but take it with a grain of salt for now until something more official has been announced.

It may have been a little while since we last heard of the Cleopatra movie starring Gal Gadot, but the actress told Vogue Hong Kong that the project is still moving forward and that it will “change the narrative” about the leader.
“This woman was so ahead of her time,” Gal Gadot said of Cleopatra. “Egypt and what Egypt was back then, was still futuristic to where we are today. I can’t say much. But to me, I’m so passionate to tell her story and to bring justice to this character, and her legacy and celebrate her and her legacy. We have a beautiful script, and I cannot wait to share this story with the world and change the narrative of Cleopatra simply being a seductor.“
Gal Gadot continued: “Israel borders Egypt, and I grew up with so many stories about Cleopatra, and she’s like a household name.

Last year we learned Castle Rock Entertainment is returning to Wind River for Wind River: The Next Chapter. Production kicked off in January with Kari Skogland directing from a script written by Patrick Massett and John Zinman. After several notable casting announcements, the anticipated sequel is thrilled to announce a list of exciting actors joining the cast. According to Deadline, Wind River alum Gil Birmingham will reprise his role as Martin, with Alan Ruck, Kali Reis (Catch the Fair One), and Tatanka Means (Killers of the Flower Moon) also joining the cast.
Taylor Sheridan directed and wrote the original Wind River, focusing on a veteran hunter who helps an FBI agent investigate the murder of a young woman on a Wyoming Native American reservation. Starring Jeremy Renner (Mayor of Kingstown, Hawkeye), Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision, Ingrid Goes West), Graham Greene, and Sensmeiser, Wind River invites audiences into a bone-chilling mystery against a picturesque yet dangerous backdrop.

A sequel to Taylor Sheridan's Wyoming reservation-set thriller "Wind River" is in the works, and it officially has a cast attached. Scott Eastwood, Jason Clarke, and Chaske Spencer have all boarded "Wind River: The Next Chapter," with "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" filmmaker Kari Skogland set to direct.
The original 2017 film starred Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen as a Fish and Wildlife agent and an FBI agent who are partnered together to solve a potential homicide involving a Native American teen girl. While the movie was well-made and spotlighted the endemic, underrepresented issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women, "Wind River" also received criticism for the way some viewers say Sheridan — a white man whose works, including "Yellowstone," often feature Indigenous characters — sensationalized on-screen violence against Native women.

Despite the unpredictability of the last few years, both in Hollywood and beyond, recent years have proven fruitful for female filmmakers. From winning the top awards at the starriest festivals to notching back to back Best Director Oscar winners (for the first time ever for Zhao and Jane Campion) and churning out big-time box office hits, women have been unquestionably on the rise.
Until, perhaps, now. As we do every year, IndieWire is looking ahead at the next two years of studio features directed by women to get a sense of who Hollywood is elevating in still-rarefied spaces. Getting the chance to helm a studio feature is, of course, not the golden ticket for any director.
But it’s hard to deny the power and prestige of directing a big-time movie released by a major studio, even in a world where streaming platforms are making significant inroads into the “blockbuster” space.

Jeremy Renner was hospitalized on New Year’s Day following a snow-plowing accident.
The Marvel actor and two-time Oscar nominee was airlifted to a hospital after an incident on his property near Reno, Nevada. Renner has a home close to Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, according to Deadline. The area was hit with a large storm New Year’s Eve and left 35,000 houses without power.
Renner is in “critical but stable condition with injuries suffered after experiencing a weather-related accident while plowing snow earlier today,” his spokesperson told Deadline. The “Hawkeye” star is noted to be “receiving excellent care” for his injuries.
IndieWire has reached out to Renner’s representatives for comment.
In addition to his MCU appearances, Renner returns for Season 2 of “Mayor of Kingstown” on Paramount+ January 15. The Taylor Sheridan-created series continues Renner’s partnership with the Paramount showrunner following their collaboration in 2017 film “Wind River,” which also is spurring a sequel.

A sequel to the 2017 Taylor Sheridan thriller “Wind River” is in the works, and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” director Kari Skogland is set to direct the film that will see Martin Sensmeier reprising his role from the original film.
The film is titled “Wind River: The Next Chapter” and hails from Rob Reiner’s newly relaunched label Castle Rock Entertainment. Additional cast will be announced soon, but it’s unclear if the film’s original stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen will return in any capacity. Sheridan, who directed and wrote the original “Wind River,” is not involved in the sequel.
2017’s “Wind River” followed a hunter (Renner) who aids an FBI agent (Olsen) in the investigation of the murder of a young woman on a Native American reservation in Wyoming. In “The Next Chapter,” terror has escalated on the Wind River reservation as a series of ritualistic murders remain unsolved.

Bill Kinder, the subject of the Matthew McConaughey film “Dallas Sting” that was axed after an investigation uncovered allegations of misconduct, has denied the accusations, saying they were fabricated.
