It’s time for a new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series, and in this one we’re looking back at the 1994 Italian horror comedy Cemetery Man, a.k.a. Dellamorte Dellamore. To find out all about Cemetery Man, check out the video embedded above!
Based on the novel Dellamorte Dellamore by Tiziano Sclavi, Cemetery Man was directed by Michele Soavi from a screenplay by Gianni Romoli. The film has the following synopsis: Something is causing the dead to rise from their graves as flesh-eating zombies, and cemetery custodian Francesco Dellamorte grows tired of killing them all for the second time. However, the town politicians won’t listen to him, so Francesco is on his own. One day, he falls for a beautiful woman whose husband has recently died — but their affair is tragically interrupted by zombies, sending Francesco into a tailspin of madness and woe.

James Wan is set to produce a new live-action series project through his Atomic Monster production company. It will be an adaptation of the cult horror comic book series Dylan Dog.
The series will chronicle the exploits of “its titular British paranormal investigator, who with his sidekick Grouch, a Marx impersonator, takes on cases that usually involve monsters, ghosts, vampires, werewolves and zombies.”
I’m not really familiar with the 33-year-old comic series, but it was created by Tiziano Sclavi and it was published in the U.S. by Dark Horse Comics. Wan is a big fan of the comic and had this to say in a statement:
“Dylan Dog is truly one of my favorite comic books ever. I was first introduced to the Nightmare Investigator back in high school by my European friends. And though I didn’t understand the foreign text, I easily understood the story through the beautiful artwork,...

“Aquaman” director James Wan’s Atomic Monster is teaming up with prominent Italian comics publisher Sergio Bonelli Editore to co-produce an English-language TV series based on cult horror comic “Dylan Dog.
Bonelli’s “Dylan Dog” property is being developed as a 10-episode live-action series based on Tiziano Sclavi’s popular franchise chronicling the exploits of its titular British paranormal investigator, who with his sidekick Grouch, a Marx impersonator, takes on cases that usually involve monsters, ghosts, vampires, werewolves and zombies.
The 33-year-old comic book series, published in the U.S. by Dark Horse Comics, boasts more than 500 installments and sales of more than 50 million copies worldwide.
Bonelli branched out into production a year ago with a dedicated arm called Bonelli Entertainment that was set up to give them a hands-on role. They bought back the rights to “Dylan Dog” which in 2011 was adapted by Hollywood indie Hyde Park Entertainment into...

Even before the Italian-language teen drama “Baby” was released on Netflix, director Andrea De Sica was responding to criticism that the series promoted sex trafficking: “That was the most delicate thing and issue about doing this series,” he said. “For us, the real story just was to spotlight one of the important neighborhoods of Rome, which from the outside world gives the image of a perfect world, but was something dark, with something happening beyond the facade. It moves from this very rich world that is frustrated about getting real relationships, love, and then getting onto this path of transgression, where two of these six main characters give into prostitution.”
Inspired by a real-life scandal involving underage prostitution, “Baby” explores the lives of high school students in one of Rome’s wealthy districts and how pressures, disillusionment, and failed relationships lead the teens to choose dangerous paths. Two of them...

Leading Italian comics publisher Sergio Bonelli Editore is branching out into TV production with plans to make an English-language show based on cult horror series “Dylan Dog,” plus other projects based on its properties, which are distributed in 35 countries.
Bonelli’s long-expected move into production, with a dedicated arm called Bonelli Entertainment, unlocks its expandable comics universe for a wide range of adaptations, but comes with the key proviso that the company wants to “be in charge,” following some “bad experiences,” said development chief Vincenzo Sarno. A 2011 Hollywood indie movie adaptation, “Dylan Dog: Dead of Night,” bombed at the box office.
Sarno said the company is in talks with prospective Italian and international partners, including global streaming services, on its new projects.
Bonelli’s move comes amid Italy’s rising profile as a hot territory for high-end international TV series, thanks to shows such as “Gomorrah,” “The Young Pope” and...

Special Mention: C’est arrivé près de chez vous (Man Bites Dog)
Written by André Bonzel, Benoît Poelvoorde, Rémy Belvaux and Vincent Tavier
Directed by André Bonzel and Benoît Poelvoorde
France, 1992
Rémy Belvaux, André Bonzel, and Benoît Poelvoorde set out to make their first feature film with little resources and little money. In the tradition of filmmakers who can’t afford much film stock, the trio settled for a faux-documentary-style approach – the result is a high-concept satire of media violence that would spoof documentaries by following around a fictitious sociopath named Ben as he exercises his lethal craft. While the cinematic tradition of presenting villains as suave, charming, attractive, and intelligent individuals is nothing new, Man Bites Dog was still ahead of its time. Much like the great Hitchcockian villains such as Joseph Cotten in Shadow of a Doubt, Ben is a man of action and ideas. He expounds on art,...

40. Road to Perdition
One of the more surprising and lesser-known facts about Sam Mendes’ second film, Road to Perdition, is that it’s actually adapted from a graphic novel of the same name by Max Allan Collins. The plot follows Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), an Irish mob enforcer as he goes on the run with his son Michael Jr. after Jr. witnesses a murder and their family is killed in an effort to cover up any witnesses. There’s many great things in this film that standout, such as Jude Law’s creepy performance as assassin Harlen Maguire, one of Paul Newman’s final and finest performances as mob boss John Rooney, and Hollywood got an early look at the talent of Daniel Craig as the unstable Connor Rooney. However, it’s the climax that remains the most memorable thing in it, featuring some of the most iconic work from...

There’s nothing like it, Michele Soavi’s surreal horror comedy Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetery Man), based on the novel by Dylan Dog author Tiziano Sclavi. Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Dellamorte Dellamore (Cemetery Man) (Demons ’95) (Of Death, of Love)
Directed by Michele Soavi
Written by Gianni Romoli
Italy / France / Germany, (1996)
Let’s just get this out of the way. Michele Soavi’s Cemetery Man is one of the three best Italian horror films ever made. Based on the wildly popular Italian comic book Dellamorte, Dellamore from Tiziano Sclavi’s Dylan Dog series, Cemetery Man is compelling, bizarre, and downright entertaining from start to finish. Technically a zombie film, but not really, Soavi’s avant-garde gothic flick weaves in so many unexpected directions, that it is quite unlike any horror film made before or after. This surreal fantasy from the director of Deliria (1987) unfolds like a very weird dream and never stops moving, twisting and turning its way to a beautifully rendered existential climax. You can take it as a horror picture or a black/comedy or a story about friendship,...

Director: Kevin Munroe. Writers: Thomas Dean Donnelly Joshua Oppenheimer, and Tiziano Sclavi. Cast: Brandon Routh, Anita Briem and Sam Huntington. Brandon Routh is one of those actors who shot up the ladder of fame thanks to Superman Returns. In Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, he's a sleuth, another comic-book hero, who tries to be slicker than oil. But he is hardly Dick Tracy as far as how this movie goes. Some fun can be found with this product, especially with the effects work, but these monsters do not try to stand out. The movie is just as good as The Spirit, and both are catering to a very select market. The colours used on the hero's costume makes for some simple motifs, but unlike previous films, it is not used to great effect. Instead, it is just a schtick, like how Clark Kent wore his clothes in "Smallville." At the same time,...

Remember when we told you all about the wonderful Italian Dylan Dog comic series from writer Tiziano Sclavi? It became a less than beloved feature film adaptation which was released on DVD earlier this month from director Kevin Munroe.
Well, we have obtained three copies of the perfect blend of sources as Munroe has autographed copies of Dark Horse Comics’ The Dylan Dog Case Files, an omnibus collecting Dylan Dog #1-6 and Dylan Dog: Zed. The book also has a cool Mike Mignola cover.
Between now and 11:59 p.m. Saturday, September 3, tell us what makes the international comic so good and we’ll pick the three best answers. The judgment of ComicMix will be final.

I first encountered the legend of Dylan Dog back when I was trying to cover foreign comics while at Comics Scene and then wrote about the film adaptation a while back over at Famous Monster of Filmland. A Pi in the world of things that go bump in the night sounded like a lot of fun. That the Italian comic has been running for decades also spoke to its creative spark and the genius of Tiziano Sclavi. Then I saw that this was going to Brandon Routh’s third film based on a comic book and figured he was 1 for 2 so far (entertaining in Scott Pilgrim, not served well by Superman Return’s lousy script) and might improve his average. He had certainly improved as an actor, as witnessed by Fear Itself and his recurring role on Chuck.
The trailers certainly made the movie look lighthearted and wonky, much like...

The Film:
The Italian comic series created by Tiziano Sclavi received an adaptation once before in the last great Italian film, Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetery Man) in 1994. Although it was a loose translation, director Michele Soavi’s film is a wonder. It’s creepy, sexy, and darkly humorous, a rare blend of genre-bending that horror fans have properly applauded. While Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is a more strict adaptation of the comic, and is tonally different than Dellamorte Dellmore, but that doesn’t make it a lesser attempt, just a rather different one.
While it has a feeling of being rather small scale in scope, comparisons will happen and Dylan Dog is no Dellamorte Dellmore. Of course the most glaring omission is the lack of Anna Falchi’s amazingly perfect huge breasts, Dylan Dog doesn’t strike that surreal cord, but comes off as a creature feature in the...

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release the paranormal horror-comedy film Dylan Dog: Dead of Night starring Brandon Routh (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World) on Blu-ray and DVD on July 26.
Brandon Routh is paranormal private dick Dylan Dog.
Based on the Italian comic book series Dylan Dog by Tiziano Sclavi, the movie tells the tale of the titular New Orleans-based paranormal detective (Routh) whose clients include all manner of supernatural beasties, be they werewolves, vampires, zombies or even guardians of Hell. Enjoying a kind of semi-retirement, Dylan Dog is forced to return to work to solve an ugly murder that may be the tip of a monstrous approaching war between his clients and humankind!
Directed by Kevin Munroe (Tmnt) and co-starring Taye Diggs (Equilibrium), Sam Huntington (TV’s Being Human) and Peter Stormare (Small Town Murder Songs), the 2010 film was highly anticipated and I was really psyched to see it...

It's gotta suck ass playing Superman. It's the Madden curse of the comic-book superhero world. George Reeves, the original Man of Steel, decided to swallow some prompting the very first unoriginal meme tackiness of making "faster than a speeding bullet" jokes, a tragedy only to be surpassed by the agonizing demise of Christopher Reeve. While Dean Cain hasn't quite suffered physical "slings and arrows," metaphorically, his career has been wallowing in ignominy. Granted, our man Clark's been working steady -- but in the likes of the made for TV Gentle Ben movie and its sequel and the forthcoming Halloween Dog. The latest Ka-Lel (with due respect to Henry Cavill who has yet to don the S) is Brandon Routh, and honestly, I wouldn't know what to do with his career either. After the excreble Superman Returns, Routh's been kind of bobbing aimlessly adrift, popping up in "Chuck" or the occasional...

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, based on Tiziano Sclavi‘s horror comic, is beyond the reach of being just clunky, rather placed down in the depths of true, unfunny dread. This is a film with seemingly a lot of heart put into the production, but none of it shows through.
Brandon Routh‘s latest vehicle doesn’t aspire to be another riff of Underworld, in terms of tone or style. Kevin Munroe‘s (director behind the decent Tmnt) action fantasy is going for something light and campy. There’s something admirable about attempting to do an old school “monsters bumping in the night” ’80s throwback, but it fails at even capturing that successfully.
The whole adventure lands in the uncanny valley. The performances, the monster FX, and nearly all aspects seem confused about its aspirations. Munroe and his actors don’t have a firm grasp on what they want. Some...

Though virtually unknown in the United States, Dylan Dog has been one of Italy’s bestselling comic books since the 1980s. It’s an open question whether there’s anything about the nation’s mood or character to be read into an attraction to stories involving an eccentric, world-weary private eye with a tendency toward tragic romances, a specialty investigating the supernatural, and a sidekick who looks like Groucho Marx. The big-screen adaptation of Dylan Dog: Dead Of Night does little to answer that question. In fact, there’s not that much of Dylan Dog creator Tiziano Sclavi’s original ...

If nothing else, Dylan Dog: Dead Of Night ought to serve as a corrective to the long-lived misperception that Michele Soavi’s Cemetery Man/Dellamorte Dellamore was derived from Tiziano Sclavi’s Dylan Dog comics, when it was actually based on an unrelated novel by the author. And the Sclavi connection is the only context in which Soavi’s film and this one should be mentioned in the same breath.

Dylan Dog is an Italian comic book series created by Tiziano Sclavi about a paranormal investigator (or "nightmare investigator" as translated directly from the comics), his Groucho Marx lookalike sidekick, and their surreal existence in London (and, infrequently, beyond). Dylan Dog: Dead Of Night is Kevin Munroe's (Tmnt) attempt to bring the Dylan Dog character to the big screen. With a deep well of past stories to draw from and rich characterizations spread across two decades of books, the film should stand out amongst the horror detective micro-genre. However, this tonally confused film does little to set itself apart from other films of its ilk and, without the budget to dazzle in any substantial way, is destined to be forgotten quickly.

With only a little over a week left before its release, Dylan Dog: Dead of Night is making a promotional push to see if the $35 million-budgeted movie can make a dent amongst the other comic book movies being released this summer.
Loosely based on the Italian comic book series Dylan Dog by Tiziano Sclavi. Dead of Night stars Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) as a private investigator for the undead who has to track down an ancient artifact with the aid of his zombie partner (Sam Huntington, also from Superman Returns) before a war erupts between the vampires, werewolves, and zombies living undercover in New Orleans. Collider has three new images of the movie, which depict Routh and Huntington on the case — either in a graveyard, running into a giant creature, or meeting with a client (Anita Briem).

"Dylan Dog: Dead Of Night" hits theaters next weekend, bringing Tiziano Sclavi's celebrated Italian comic book series to life on the big screen. Just in case you can't wait that long, here's an early peek at the film courtesy of a new clip debuting exclusively here on MTV Splash Page:
Directed by Kevin Munroe ("Tmnt") and starring Brandon Routh ("Superman Returns"), Sam Huntington ("Being Human"), Taye Diggs ("Rent"), and Anita Briem ("Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D"), "Dead Of Night" follows the world’s only "private investigator of the undead" as he gets caught in a war between vampires, werewolves, zombies and other supernatural creatures.
Back in August 2009, Routh pulled the "Star Wars" card when asked to describe Dylan Dog to those who might not be familiar with the best-selling comic, which was recently re-published in the U.S. by Dark Horse Comics.
"That's what's cool about Dylan Dog,...

The Dylan Dog comic book created by Tiziano Sclavi is one of the most successful in the world, with an estimated 56 million units sold worldwide. Though published in Italy, the comic book is primarily set in a very gothic looking London, so why is the upcoming live-action feature adaptation starring Brandon Routh as the title hero set in New Orleans instead of London? The makers of Dylan Dog: Dead of Night have just released a new featurette to explain the answer to just that question.

Even though many were disappointed with 2006's "Superman Returns," the consensus was that whatever problems the film had it was not star Brandon Routh, who managed to channel Christpher Reeve while giving the superhero icon his own affable spin.
While he recently lost the Supes role to Henry Cavill, Routh managed to stay on comic fan's radar with a Vegan-tastic part in last year's "Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World," and now ventures even deeper into the genre with a long-awaited movie version of Italy's #1 comic book hero, "Dylan Dog."
Although the comic is set in London and the title paranormal detective's likeness is based on Brit actor Rupert Everett of "My Best Friend's Wedding" fame, this Americanized version casts Routh as Dylan and moves the zombiefied action to New Orleans. Besides the walking dead, Dylan has to contend with werewolves, vampires, and other hellish creatures.
