Struggling to recall the last time the internet seemed like a force for good in the world? Yancey Strickler can cite the exact date: March 13, 2013.
That’s the day that Kickstarter’s co-founder and former CEO Strickler and writer/director Rob Thomas launched the “Veronica Mars” Movie Project on the then-four-year-old crowdfunding platform. Within 11 hours, tens of thousands of “Veronica Mars” fans opened their wallets to quickly hit the $2 million goal to bring Thomas’ low-rated high school detective series starring Kristen Bell as the eponymous teen gumshoe back from the TV graveyard as a feature film, which opened in theaters 10 years ago on March 14, 2014.
“It was just love — that’s what it felt like,” Strickler told IndieWire about being in the room with Thomas when the “Veronica Mars” campaign launched, and the fan-raised funds rolled in en masse. “There was a documentary crew there filming; the cast kept calling us,...

What’s most shocking about the fact that it’s been 35 years since Mystery Science Theater 3000 began its run on Ktma in Minneapolis-St. Paul is the fact that it’s been only 35 years. Sporting a premise that’s gained added resonance since Covid redefined what it’s like to watch movies in isolation, the series has existed long enough—and in enough iterations—as to feel almost impervious to time, endlessly redefining itself as technology and media consumption mutate and grow, and, more frequently, as circumstances necessitate.
While the show’s hook—a human and their robots joke their way through bad movies—suggests a cynical outlook, its overriding imagination leaves room enough to enjoy both the films being watched and the jokes made at their expense. The classics that MST3K has yielded far exceed the limitations of this list’s format—to say nothing of the multitude of grace notes contained within,...

Against all odds, "Mystery Science Theater 3000" manages to keep surviving thanks to a dedicated fanbase who never gets tired of seeing awful, old movies get mocked relentlessly. After the show disappeared for awhile, a crowdfunding campaign in 2015 promised to bring it back with a vengeance, and Netflix jumped on board to bring it to the masses in 2017, ending an 18-year hiatus. After that, creator Joel Hodgson got fans to help fund the show's 13th season, as well as the creation of the Gizmoplex, a dedicated website and distribution platform to give fans more new episodes of the show. Season 13 was released last year, and it even made it over to the "MST3K" channel on PlutoTV. Now, Hodgson is hoping to come back for more.
Today, Joel Hodgson announced a new crowdfunding campaign to help make "Mystery Science Theater 3000" season 14. This new campaign is being launched under the show's new in-house crowdfunding platform,...

You never knew exactly what you would get when "The Twilight Zone" began. The series — produced and largely written by celebrated Emmy-winning writer Rod Serling — was a loose collection of fantastical tales. Some were supernatural, some were science fiction. Some were comedies, and some were scary as hell.
It should come as little surprise that the "scary as hell" episodes are among the most memorable installments of the series. William Shatner's desperate screaming that there's a man on the wing of the plane in "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" was instantly iconic, and repeatedly remade. Agnes Moorehead silently fighting off an invading force of tiny homicidal aliens in "The Invaders" was strange and shocking, and seemingly set the stage for future "tiny monster" horror movies like "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" and "Gremlins."
But perhaps no "Twilight Zone" episode is more overwhelmingly terrifying than the one about a little kid with godlike powers.

We all know Mystery Science Theater 3000 as the show in which a human host and a couple of robots make fun of bad movies. According to in-universe lore, the movies come via mad scientist members of the Forrester family, who test the sanity of a human subject by forcing them to watch terrible films. The humans — beginning with Joel Robinson (series creator Joel Hodgson), followed by Mike Nelson (Michael J. Nelson), Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray), and Emily Connor (Emily Marsh) — fight back by riffing on the films, a task made easier not just by the robot sidekicks Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, but also by the genuine awfulness of the movies.
But MST3K didn’t always have mockery in mind as its central premise. As seen in the recently-unearthed early episodes recorded for Minneapolis public access channel Ktma, Joel spent more time enjoying Invaders from the Deep and Revenge...

Joe Johnston's family adventure film "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" was an unexpected hit when it was released in the summer of 1989. Modestly budgeted, the film starred Rick Moranis as an amateur molecular engineer and father of three who has been working on a shrink ray in his attic in his spare time. When his kids are playing around in the attic, they activate the shrink ray and are reduced to a tiny size. They are then unwittingly swept into the trash and carried out to the backyard. The bulk of the film is a trek the tiny kids take across the lawn, climbing enormous stalks of grass, befriending giant ants, and doing battle with monstrous scorpions. "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" famously played with the first of three Roger Rabbit cartoon shorts, "Tummy Trouble," likely contributing to its success. The film made $222 million worldwide.

Some very good news for "Mystery Science Theater 3000" fans has emerged, and this isn't even news that will be good in the not-too-distant future -- it's good right now! The series resurfaced for season 13 last year after a very successful round of crowdfunding. It resulted in a full 13 episodes, including the return of Joel Hodgson as Joel Robinson, which is something that hasn't happened in years. Certain fans would be forgiven for not realizing that the series had come back yet again, as it wasn't through a major cable channel, nor was it on a big streaming service. Rather, the episodes were released independently through The Gizmoplex, which was a website dedicated to all things "MST3K."
The idea was that fans could pay for a somewhat pricey season pass to watch all of the episodes that ran for $135, though it also included access to livestreams and other perks.

The longevity of "Mystery Science Theater 3000" has been fascinating to behold. Beginning on Minnesota public access television in 1988, Joel Hodgson's watch-bad-movies-with-sarcastic-buddies cult TV series has deeply entrenched itself into the collected Jungian lore of every Gen-Xer worth their weight in flannel. For much of its life, "MST3K" lived either on Ktma in Minneapolis or, when it became more successful, running at midnight on Comedy Central.
Throughout, the show famously included the phrase "Keep circulating the tapes" in its credits. That was an acknowledgement from the show's producers that world-of-mouth and shared VHS recordings of "MST3K" were responsible for its modest cultural foothold. Fans would call friends, mail them cassettes, and implore that the cult grow. In 2008, when "MST3K" was finally made widely available through DVD box sets, Dr. Forrester/Crow T. Robot actor Trace Beaulieu said in an Av Club interview to "Keep circulating some of the tapes.

Last year, we saw a list of thirteen movies that would be riffed during the new season of the classic series Mystery Science Theater 3000, which is now being released through the show’s own indie streaming platform The Gizmoplex. On that list was a movie called The Christmas Dragon, which was said to be about “a group of orphans going on a journey to restore the lost magic and save Christmas.” What wasn’t mentioned at that time is that original MST3K host Joel Hodgson will be returning to riff The Christmas Dragon with current hosts Jonah Ray and Emily Marsh!

It’s the holiday season, and Thanksgiving is coming up in a matter of weeks. For fans of the cult hit comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000, it means the annual Turkey Day Marathon is also coming up. In the past years, the official Mystery Science Theater channel on youtube hosted the marathon with a live stream, but now details on this year have been released through Shout! Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 13 officially premiered on May 6, but Kickstarter backers were given early access to the first episode, “Santo in the Treasure of Dracula,” on March 4. The live event, the first hosted by MST3K’s own app, the Gizmoplex, opened with 20 minutes of technical difficulties. A black screen with a white dot sporadically gave updates as the audience waited. Once the movie started, there was terrible sound quality. The end credits weren’t done yet, either.
And it was the most fun MST3K has been in a long time.
Everyone behind the scenes seemed to feel it too – the adrenaline of a near-disaster. The live post-show chat was filled with jokes about the difficulties of getting the episode to air, with the production team reveling in the mishaps and the occasionally jury-rigged solutions to their newly pared-down budget.

We’ve got movie sign: Some three years after Netflix canceled the revival of “Mystery Science Theater 3000,” the cult classic is back. As was the case with the series’ streaming return in 2017, the fans were instrumental, with creator Joel Hodgson once more turning to Kickstarter to gauge just how badly MSTies (as they prefer to be called) wanted more episodes of movie riffing.
Very badly, as it turns out: The crowdfunding effort netted a whopping 6.5 million, hitting its initial 2 million benchmark in a single day. After three and a half decades and nearly as many cancellations, cult favorite comedy show Mystery Science Theater 3000 proves that sometimes a premise is just too damned good to die. To promote the fifth iteration of the beloved series, the cast – including creator Joel Hodgson, returning host Jonah Ray, and newcomer Emily Marsh – recently appeared Rolling Stone’s Twitch channel to discuss latest revival.
Originally airing on local Minneapolis station Ktma-tv from 1988-1989, MST3K has always been scrappy at heart. The show’s premise saw creator Joel Hodgson play the character Joel Robinson,...

Like Dracula or a horde of zombies from a cheesy B movie, Mystery Science Theater 3000 has proven impossible to keep down. The Peabody Award-winning cult favorite — which mines laughs by showing and making fun of eye-poppingly awful movies and educational shorts — is going it alone for Season 13, launching its own streaming service after raising 6.5 million though a Kickstarter campaign. Cast member and writer Felicia Day was disappointed when Netflix canceled MST3K in 2019, but had a feeling that creator Joel Hodgson would find a way to resurrect it. “Joel has a lot of pluck, a lot of passion for the content and the fans, and I knew that somehow it would pop up,” she says. “It’s an independent season, and I think it’s really innovative.” This season does indeed blend the familiar with the fresh. Beginning Friday, May 6, new episodes will debut at gizmoplex.com and on Mystery Science Theater 3000...

The 11th and 12th seasons of "Mystery Science Theater 3000," now available on Netflix, were a reboot of the series wherein the premise was kept in tact -- a space-bound blue collar prisoner is forced to watch, and joke about, extremely bad movies by a pair of mad scientists -- but the setting and the cast changed. Jonah Ray was now the central host of the show, the voices of the robots were replaced by a new team of comedians (Baron Vaughn and Hampton Yount), and the mad scientists (Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt) were the children of the original mad...

Felicia Day And Jonah Ray On Returning Mystery Science Theater 3000 To Its Scrappy Roots [Interview]
"Mystery Science Theater 3000" started in the mind of show creator Joel Hodgson before debuting on Ktma in Minnesota in 1988, with the show eventually moving to The Comedy Channel (later Comedy Central) for several lucrative seasons, and then shunting over to the Sci-Fi Channel (later SyFy) to wrap up its run, before returning on Netflix (still Netflix) for two additional seasons. Now, "MST3K" has been rescued once again, this time by Kickstarter backers, so that it may make its debut on its very own streaming service called The Gizmoplex.

The year is 1995, and "Mystery Science Theater 3000" was undergoing changes. A conflict between producer Jim Mallon and show creator Joel Hodgson — largely over who was running the show and how they should go about making a "Mystery Science Theater 3000" feature film — caused the latter to leave the series halfway through its fifth season (head writer Mike Nelson would take over acting/hosting duties). Additionally, the show's lucrative contract with Comedy Central was about to run out. A man named Doug Herzog was put in control of Comedy Central, and his new vision for the network was raunchy animated programs...

Back in 1988, when he was first conceiving "Mystery Science Theater 3000," show creator Joel Hodgson wanted it to serve as a late-night hangout. His local Minnesota TV station, Ktma, had a store of cheap genre films they would throw on late and night, and Hodgson wanted to recreate the phenomenon of staying up late with friends, watching these valueless, cheesy movies, and have a good time. As organically happens when large groups of friends stay up late to watch bad flicks on TV, jokes are going to be made at the movie's expense. Hodgson would gather in a theater with two...

In the '60s, before cable, streaming services, and The World Wide Web, there were three channels on television. But, even with its limited options, TV still captured the attention of kids at the time, and one of those kids was Joel Hodgson.
Unlike today, Hodgson couldn't fire up Netflix and pick the films he wanted to see. He watched whatever those three channels had to offer, which might sound like some form of bizarre torture to modern audiences, but the lack of options didn't stop the young guy from loving television. A self-described "TV junkie," Hodgson would watch everything from polka shows to farm reports,...

“Mystery Science Theater 3000” is returning for a 13th season, this time on a new indie streaming platform, Gizmoplex.
Created by Joel Hodgson in 1988, the cult show “MST3K” follows a series of ordinary humans captured by mad scientists who subject them to a series of terrible B-movies. To keep their sanity, the humans create a series of companion robots to riff on the films they watch, which are presented on the show in their entirety. “MST3K” has gone through several iterations, initially airing on Ktma-tv Minneapolis, then on Comedy Central and the Sci-Fi channel, for a total of 10 seasons. It was revived for a two season run on Netflix in 2017. The show has been highly acclaimed since its creation, winning a Peabody in 1993, and has helped turn seberal obscure movies into cult classics, such as “Manos: The Hands of Fate.”

When the cult hit "Mystery Science Theater 3000" drew to a close in 1999, most of the show's writers and cast members pretty swiftly re-assembled to repeat the show's shtick in other forms. The show's creator, Joel Hodgson, assembled "Cinematic Titanic," while Mike Nelson spun off into "The Film Crew" and "Rifftrax." Most of the alumni and alumnae of "MST3K" have been touring live from time to time "riffing" on bad movies. And, wouldn't you know it, "MST3K" even returned eventually.
Several of the show's writers and stars, however, did attempt other projects in the interim. Several of them wrote books, for instance....

"Mystery Science Theater 3000" officially ended its run in 1999, but never really went away.
The "watching bad movies with several funny friends" premise was simply too good to leave behind, and every cast member on the show participated in "MST3K"-like projects for years thereafter. The show's creator, Joel Hodgson, teamed up with Mary Jo Pehl, Trace Beaulieu, Frank Conniff, and J. Elvis Weinstein to create "Cinematic Titanic," a riffing show wherein the cast was seen in silhouette, like on "MST3K," and were beholden to an evil, ill-defined corporate entity. When comedian Joel Hodgson created "Mystery Science Theater 3000" back in 1988, he couldn't have possibly imagined the cultural impact the show would have had on a generation. "MST3K" became one of the biggest cult hits of the 1990s, and its whimsical, sarcastic jokes thrown in the face of terrible cinema introduced many young viewers to the notion that even bad movies had value as entertainment. Joel Robinson (Hodgson) and his two closest robot companions, Crow T. Robot and Tom Servo, became everyone's laidback, late-night movie-watching buddies, mining unremarkable films for comedy and camaraderie ... and criticism. While there was a lot of bare-faced...

Well, almost. Mystery Science Theater 3000 season 13 debuts at 8 pm Est on Friday, March 4th! But it’s going to look a little different this time, and not just because the beloved comedy series won’t be on the cable channels it called home from 1989-1999. Nor will it be on Netflix, like seasons 11 and 12.
No, season 13 will be streaming on the Gizmoplex, a streaming service designed especially for MST3K. Series creator Joel Hodgson announced the Gizmoplex at the start of the “Make More MST3K” Kickstarter from last year. According to Hodgson, Gizmoplex will serve as a home for all things MST3K. That’s where you’ll find not only Season 13 episodes, including Gamera vs. Jiger and the dreaded Munchie, but also all available episodes from previous seasons.

Mystery Science Theater 3000’s Turkey Day isn’t just an annual marathon of classic episodes to sit back and watch on Thanksgiving. Depending on the timing, fans watch it hoping to see some kind of news. In this era when MST3K’s always in flux, viewers have their fingers crossed that we’re going to see some kind of look into the future of the franchise. Luckily, Turkey Day 2021 gave us plenty to sink our teeth into.
To get us back up to speed, after years of being off TV, a Kickstarter campaign started up in 2015 and successfully brought MST3K back for an eleventh season on Netflix for 2017. It ran for fourteen episodes and while the new cast needed some time to figure themselves out, it had plenty of high notes. Then things seemed to wither before it had a chance to soar.

When it comes to Thanksgiving, we all have our non-eating traditions. Many like to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade or check out a game or two of football. For many a geek, Thanksgiving is a day that lets us sit back and watch a whole lot of Mystery Science Theater 3000. It’s part of the show’s DNA. The first episode debuted back on Thanksgiving in 1988. Then the idea of a Thanksgiving marathon became a regular part of Comedy Central’s calendar. Years later, MST3K episodes would be spread through Thanksgiving whether or not there was any news on new seasons being in the works.
Luckily, this is one of those years where there’s a new season in the works! As we await MST3K Season 13, we’ll get another MST3K Turkey Day on our plate to enjoy. On November 25, starting at 9am Et, we’re getting eight classic episodes.

“Mystery Science Theater 3000” is coming back strong.

A few years ago, Mystery Science Theater 3000 made its grand return. Through an incredibly successful Kickstarter, they raised enough money and showed proof of enough fan interest to get the show back with a new season. Netflix acted as the home to the eleventh season with fourteen episodes and much fun was had by all. The Return also led to a series of live tours that kept going until Covid kicked in and they also did a Dark Horse comic spinoff.
Unfortunately, Netflix wasn’t so enthusiastic in the aftermath. The twelfth season only contained six episodes, emphasizing the challenge of binge-watching them. Then Netflix unceremoniously dumped the show. Well, at least we have the fourth season of Glow to look forward to.
…oh, you bastards.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 creator Joel Hodgson and Shout! Factory have launched a kickstarter to revive the show after Netflix opted not to renew it.
“From modest beginnings on a local Minneapolis television station in the late 1980s to cable to a live tour, Mystery Science Theater 3000 has proved to be an enduring cult classic. “Mystery Science Theater 3000” could be coming back again…again.
Series creator Joel Hodgson announced Wednesday that the show has launched a new Kickstarter campaign to create a new, independent season of the series. The current goal is to raise at least $2 million to create new episodes of the beloved cult show and what Hodgson has dubbed the Gizmoplex, an online platform on which the show and related content will be released in the future. At the time of this publishing, nearly $500,000 has already been raised by over 2,000 backers.
The news comes around six years after the show’s record-breaking Kickstarter campaign to fund a new season, which ultimately aired on Netflix. Netflix then ordered a second season of the show but declined to pick up a third in 2019.
