Updated with more numbers: The return of Fox’s Empire from its winter hiatus Wednesday took a tumble from its fall finale, drawing 4.4 million total viewers and a 1.3 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic, the second-lowest numbers to date for the hip-hop drama.
It still was the night’s second highest-rated show in primetime behind CBS’ Survivor, which also topped the night in viewers.
It was the first episode back for Empire since star Jussie Smollett was arrested and charged with lying about being the victim of an alleged attack in Chicago back in January. The return episode had been in the can for months, well before the alleged assault in the early-morning hours on January 29 and its aftermath.
Smollett was in court Thursday in Chicago and pleaded not guilty to 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct. His future on the series playing Jamal Lyon remains in question...

Jimmy Kimmel will put a government employee to work on his show every night until the shutdown ends. First up tonight is John Kostelnik, a guard at the Federal Correctional Complex in Victorville, CA, who will be sitting in with Jkl house band Cleto and the Cletones.

A reunion special featuring several cast members from HBO’s now-wrapped epic Game of Thrones, shot earlier this year in Northern Ireland and hosted by Conan O’Brien, is headed straight to video — but it’s not as bad as it sounds.
HBO confirmed Wednesday that the special, shot in Belfast earlier this year, will appear exclusively on a complete Seasons 1-8 DVD GoT box set to hit shelves sometime in 2019. A story in Entertainment Weekly said some past cast members including Sean Bean were involved in the interview special.
As of now there are no plans for the special to air on HBO, we understand. As it was for the premium network, it also won’t appear on Conan.

As rumors swirl that the Adam Levine-led Maroon5 will headline the Super Bowl halftime show on CBS, the NFL has thrown a flag on the play. But that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
“It’s a Super Bowl tradition to speculate about the performers for the Pepsi Halftime Show,” a league spokesman told Deadline. “We are continuing to work with Pepsi on our plans but do not have any announcements to make on what will be another epic show.”
That’s the NFL’s usual company line when reports about the halftime act start to surface each year. The league ultimately makes the call about who will perform, but that said, music industry sources tell Deadline that talks with Maroon5 for Super Bowl Liii have happened and that “it’s trending in that direction.” We hear that a deal appears to be done but that the league...

An era has passed, but as Sundays will always be the natural spot for awards shows, Fridays should never refuse a Barbara Walters special. And that’s what ABC rolled out last night with a full court press retrospective via the 2-hour Barbara Walters: Her Story (1.6/7) special. Coming the same day as Walters’ last stint as on-air den mother on The View, as my colleague Lisa de Moraes likes to say, the look back at her career over the decades saw the TV pioneer interviewing Presidents, the famous, the infamous and the too trainwrecky to look away. And a lot of people were looking on Friday. Even with last week’s 20/20, and down a scant 5% from Walters’ quickly pulled together showstopper of an interview with Donald Sterling’s confidante V. Stiviano on May 2, last night’s special was tied with lead-in Shark Tank (1.6/7) for the far away highest-rated show...

The Oscars host seemed a safe choice but critical reaction was mixed, with accusations of 'boring, wince-inducing' moments
• Video: how Oscars host Ellen DeGeneres took star-studded snap
Critics have delivered a decidedly mixed verdict on Ellen DeGeneres' performance as Oscars host. While some praised the comic as a safe pair of hands in the wake of Seth MacFarlane's controversial stint last year, others panned the ceremony as a listless, over-long affair.
The Hollywood Reporter's Tim Goodman delivered an excoriating verdict, with his review's headline describing the broadcast as a "flop". He wrote: "Who would have predicted that [this year's Oscars] would have been so boring, so long, so self-involved and driven sideways into a ditch by, of all people, the beloved Ellen DeGeneres as host?"
"As a television event, [it] was more like an endurance test. It was a turgid affair, badly directed, poorly produced and featuring an endless string of either...

The Washington Post's longtime television columnist, Lisa de Moraes, is leaving "The TV Column" and the newspaper at the end of May to move to California, she told TheWrap on Monday. De Moraes has written for the paper for nearly 15 years and "loved every minute of it," but after six years of making a 2,700-mile commute to see her Los Angeles-based husband, has decided to live "full-time" on the West Coast. Guys, we need to talk about Girls.
Ever since the HBO comedy premiered April 15, 2012, there’s been controversy following in its footsteps — and I’m a little sick of it.
Yes, the series is loved by most critics. The first season won rave reviews and nabbed Girls two Golden Globes, including Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, just a week ago.
But thanks to the Internet, viewers and some critics have nitpicked — at times reasonably, but mostly not — at several issues surrounding Girls.
The most minor quibble I’ve heard is that the New York-based characters, led by Hannah Horvath (creator, writer, director and producer Lena Dunham), are unlikable. As Pajiba’s Dustin Rowles notes, “If you dip into the comments section of Girls reviews on any given site, one refrain echoes throughout: The characters are entitled and unlikable. Why should I watch a...

A Washington Post article about "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch is making the viral rounds thanks to an outrageous misspelling of the actor's name. But referring to the man who has become "a situation" for women everywhere as "Bandersnatch Cummerbund" was apparently a purposeful gag on the part of the writer, Lisa de Moraes, contrary to initial reports.
Of course, we couldn't help but feel this was a wasted opportunity. Why misspell a name so fraught with spellcheck danger only once, when you can do it repeatedly? Go big or go home, de Moraes.
To that end, here are some other ways you and your friends can misspell Benedict Cumberbatch in your text messages, tweets, tumblrs, and newspaper reports. You know, just wherever...

The X Factor, a show that's been hyped for years, ends its first season tonight. Compared to Fox's typical fall programing, the show has succeeded by bringing in higher ratings. Compared to even diminished expectations, X Factor appears to be a very shiny version of American Idol's diaper contents. The Washington Post's Lisa de Moraes runs down five things that are wrong with the show, and in Vulture, Dave Holmes identifies "10 things that still...

The tale of the building of the transcontinental railroad, the steel band that wed the metropolitan East to the frontier West, is among the greatest in American history.

While Weiner's genitalia was going viral, it was revealed his wife Huma is pregnant with the couple's first child.

In another Weinergate-related development, Alec Baldwin is considering a run for mayor of NYC in 2013 now that Weiner, the presumptive front-runner, has self-immolated.

Darn you Lisa de Moraes for giving me the unerasable images of Mormon sister wives running around with tiny little hatchets behind their billowing tarp dresses and long braids. More modern polygamists Barb (Jeanne Tripplehorn), Nicki (Chloe Sevigny) and Margene (Ginnifer Goodwin) are about ready to go at each other as familiarity has bred utter contempt between each gal, as husband Bill (Bill Paxton) stoically holds his illegal harem hoarder head up high, ready to take the poly lifestyle out of the closet, damn the modernized Brigham Young torpedoes. Well, as much as I hated "Sister Wives" on Tlc (a real show about polygamy) I love this ridiculous HBO telenovela of wadded-up pious Principle proselytizing, now in its...

The world, on this Mlk day, is starkly divided. It all comes down to one issue that has torn us into two camps: was Ricky Gervais amazing as Mc of the Golden Globes, or was it a career-killing crash and burn? At The Washington Post, Lisa De Moraes is part of Camp Major Meltdown, writing--apparently seriously--that the Globes "will go down in history for having brought Hollywood together in its hatred of host Ricky Gervais."...

Upon hearing the news that James Franco would host the Oscars along with Anne Hathaway I reached out to him to get the skinny.
But first, who’s saying what in the barrage of articles that quickly filled up everyone’s news readers after the announcement made earlier this week?
Brooks Barnes, from the noted New York Times blog Carpetbagger pointed that Franco and Hathaway “certainly have cachet in Hollywood as bright young things. But do they have the same pull with the general population?” I wonder if Barnes is alluding to an age thing. The Washington Post’s Lisa de Moraes wrote, “ABC is … guaranteed to be stuck with one of the lowest-rated Academy Awards broadcasts in recent memory … ” Ouch! But then she adds, “on paper, Hathaway and Franco sound great.” Even former-mayor-reborn-as-film-critic Ed Koch joined in the chorus, saying in the Huffington Post that,...

The Real World New Orleans debuts next week, and because DC was the lowest-rated season ever despite its drunken violence, the show will refocus on the lowest common denominator: "sluts and nuts," as The Washington Post's Lisa de Moraes awesomely describes it. As de Moraes points out, MTV's cast bios make that perfectly clear. So does the preview trailer MTV released, and executive producer Jon Murray--who has long lost touch with the series that he...

Adam Lambert is tonight's mentor on American Idol 9, and he's desperately needed: most of the finalists can sing but they can't really perform, and they're boring, not interesting. I'm sure Adam will be supportive and kind to them, but I hope he pushes them to improve their stage presence and performance. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly (which Lisa de Moraes hysterically calls the "celebrity suck-up mag") executive producer Ken Warwick is asked if...

Multiple news outlets are reporting that reality show baron Mark Burnett has secured a deal with Discovery Networks for a reality travelogue hosted by none other than Sarah Palin. Thankfully, she quit her term as governor early so she could lend all that credibility to a show worthy of the caliber of Discovery Channel. Even these newscasters couldn't keep a straight face when reporting the story. And Twitter user @TravelSavvyKayt wonders: @KimMance does she get bonuses for tilting her head perkily and saying, "You betcha!"? But to Discovery Channel, it's no laughing matter and they are no doubt clinking glasses of champagne after the triumph of winning an apparent bidding war with A&E for the right to pay over $1 million per episode of Palin touring Alaska. Lisa de Moraes over at The Washington Post explains a bit about the show: Evidently, Palin will serve...

While American Idol remains atop the heap of TV shows in terms of ratings, it seems like some people realize that this season is kinda a heap of something else, because ratings for the first results show were at a record low. The Washington Post's Lisa de Moraes reports that "the episode suffered the smallest audience among 18-49 year-olds for a regularly scheduled in-season episode in 'Idol' history," and then amusingly links that to Seacrest's...

It was recently announced that ABC was going to use some skywriting to promote their upcoming remake of the 1980's NBC mini-series and TV show, V. The plan was for airplanes to draw giant red V's across the sky at over 25 landmarks across the country and keep doing it until the show debuts on November 3rd.
Well, Lisa de Moraes, a reporter for The Washington Post, wrote an article about the promotion and described the amount of pollution that the campaign would add to the atmosphere. According to estimated figures, the skywriting would use more than 400 gallons of fuel, and add 800 grams of lead and three tons of CO2 to the atmosphere.
That may not seem like a lot but it doesn't exactly line up with the ecological stance of Disney, ABC's parent company. Earlier this year, the house of...

With less than a week to go until the series premiere of ABC's reimagination of cult classic sci-fi series V, the network has released a longer version of its "We Will Be Victorious" promo, which is set to the song "Uprising" by Muse. While a 45-second promo featuring the song was released about a month back (and can be viewed below), Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello has an exclusive look at a longer "Victorious" promo that clocks in at just under two minutes. (It can be viewed here.) Meanwhile, ABC has scrapped plans for a viral publicity campaign that would have seen giant, crimson-hued Vs appear over 26 major American landmarks to promote the November 3rd launch of V, according to Hollywood Reporter's The Live Feed. An ABC spokesperson tells THR's James Hibberd that they have decided to spend the funds in other ways, following a Washington Post column in which Lisa de Moraes...
