Sunday Am: A24 is calling Civil War at a $25.7M opening, largely fueled by Democrat and Liberal moviegoers, but with overperforming business in some Red state regions like the South and Southwest.
Screen Engine/Comscore’s PostTrak polled Civil War attendees’ politics reporting that 22% considered themselves Liberal, 19% were Democrats, 11% considered themselves moderate, whereas registered Republicans (6%), Evangelical Christians (6%) and politically conservative folks (5%) showed up as a minority.
The markets that overperformed were L.A., San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Phoenix, Austin, Navy hub San Diego, and conservative market Denver. But then there were these smaller regional markets that rallied, including El Paso and Waco, Texas, Oklahoma City, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Charlottesville, Virginia. As we told you, South, South Central, and West were the best regions for the A24 release, which follows journalists chronicling a divided, violent America.

A24’s new trailer for Civil War doesn’t move viewers any closer to understanding how, given the history of our country, California would be joining Texas and Florida in seceding from the United States. The idea of a second Civil War is nowhere near as far-fetched as Texas and Florida agreeing with anything California proposes, and vice versa, and writer/director Alex Garland recently said he wants audiences to ask how that could possibly happen.
“I tend not to spell things out in films. I sometimes feel overly spoon-fed by cinema, and so I probably just react against that,” said Garland in an interview with Empire. “That question, why Texas and California, is a question that I want the audience to ask.”
The film stars Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno, and Nick Offerman. Spaeny, McKinley Henderson, Offerman, and Mizuno previously starred...

Viola Davis as Dr Volumnia Gaul in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Photo Credit: Murray Close Having directed all of the Hunger Games films since the second, Francis Lawrence had a pretty good idea of what he wanted when the prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, was being cast. And one of those things he wanted was Oscar-winner Viola Davis in the role of Dr. Volumnia Gaul. The only thing standing in the way was a request from the author of the Hunger Games book series, Suzanne Collins, but Lawrence told explained they were able to find a creative way around that issue. Friends! It is a treat to celebrate the passage of another year with you. 2023 has been an unusual one with the Writers and Actors’ strikes provoking much discussion about the current state (and future outlook) of the industry. But there were wonderful high points of pure joy – a Goonie won an Oscar! – and great work was seen and championed.
We saw new films from Hayao Miyazaki, Jeff Nichols, Greta Gerwig, Yorgos Lanthimos, Paul King, Mark Jenkin, Sofia Coppola, M. Night Shyamalan, Nicole Holofcener, Pedro Almodovar, Brandon Cronenberg, Emerald Fennell, Ari Aster, and a new TV series from Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij – life in the chaotic tubetunnel is vibrant indeed!

Viola Davis as Dr Volumnia Gaul in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Photo Credit: Murray Close Since The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is a prequel that takes place long before the other films in the series, it’s uncertain whether we’ll see any more movies with the same cast. But, if that does happen, it sounds like Oscar winner Viola Davis would be up for reprising her Songbirds & Snakes role. As Davis said, she really had a wonderful time playing the film’s villain. With Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” looking to continue its reign at the top spot of the box office, it’s time to consider the most sonorous secret to its success: its original, bluegrass-tinted song selection, including a theme written and produced by Dave Cobb (with lyrics from “Hunger Games” author Suzanne Collins), and sung soulfully by the film’s star, Rachel Zegler.
Reaching back to the 2020 prequel novel by Suzanne Collins that the movie is based on, Zegler points out how clearly Appalachian Lucy was, and how her accent exists in that vernacular throughout the duration of the novel, something that was destined to carry over into the music.
“District 12, where we exist canonically, lies in North Carolina and the Appalachian Mountains,” says Zegler, speaking from New York. “I’m glad Francis wanted to explore that — he even sent me the trailer for...

Viola Davis as Dr Volumnia Gaul in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Photo Credit: Murray Close The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes scored a real coup when the producers were able to cast Oscar-winner Viola Davis in the role of Dr. Volumnia Gaul, one of the architects of the early Hunger Games. In the movie, she becomes a major factor in helping to turn Coriolanus Snow into the powerful — and not very nice — character he would become later in life, when he would become the chief antagonist of the other Hunger Games movies. Davis said she really enjoyed getting to show off her evil, scheming side, since it’s the opposite of who she really is. “Hunger Games” prequel film “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” is full of references to the four films that come after it, but the biggest connection between this movie and those is musical.
As sourced in Suzanne Collins’ prequel novel, Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler) wrote “The Hanging Tree” inspired by historical events in District 12, which she and Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) both witnessed. The song takes on more meaning when imbued with the backstory of Panem and how President Snow came to be as the Hunger Games also developed.
“Hunger Games” fans will remember it’s a song that Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen sings in “Mockingjay.” Producer Nina Jacobson, who has produced all the “Hunger Games” movies, told TheWrap that music is key to this franchise.
“What I loved was that this adaptation really made me think about how critical music has always been to these movies. I...

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes substitutes a songstress for a huntress and the morally compromised, bankrupt scion of a once powerful Capital family for the heroic endeavors of The Hunger Games’ Peeta and Gale. A prequel set decades before Katniss entered the arena, Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is, at its core, an examination of why the Hunger Games exists.
What is the purpose of this gruesome spectacle? Can this annual butchering of children be justified as an effective method of keeping District rebels in check? Is there any moral justification for something as barbaric as pitting innocent children against each other in a fight to the death?

Tom Blyth is tired, but he’s doing a good job of hiding it. When the star of “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” sits down with Variety via Zoom, SAG-AFTRA is still on strike, and it’s been six short days since the Lionsgate thriller received an in- terim agreement from the guild.
That means the press tour leading up to the long-anticipated release, typically spread across several months, has been condensed to just two weeks. But Blyth is animated as he talks about landing the role of Coriolanus Snow in the prequel tale, which explores how a poor young man with a revolutionary spirit eventually becomes the vicious dictator of Panem.
“When I got the call, I was ec- static for a moment,” recalls Blyth, 28, who is best known as the titular character in the MGM+ series “Billy the Kid.” “And then I was like,...

Does anyone still have an appetite for the Hunger Games? Viola Davis stars alongside Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler as Dr. Volumnia Gaul, the head game maker of the 10th Hunger Games. As fans of the book know, Volumnia Gaul was also the mastermind behind the Capitol’s experimental weapons division, cooking up various twisted mutations in an underground laboratory. Many actors have played the Joker in Batman films, but few have done it as memorably or successfully as Heath Ledger. Ledger gave an unforgettable performance in The Dark Knight. Before Ledger, veteran actor Jack Nicholson took on the role in Tim Burton’s Batman. Ledger did not want his performance to resemble Nicholson’s, though. Here’s why.
Heath Ledger didn’t want to base his version of the Joker on Jack Nicholson
By the time Ledger began filming The Dark Knight, Nicholson was a three-time Oscar winner with even more nominations under his belt. Despite his predecessor’s proven success as an actor, Ledger didn’t want to model his performance after him.

Ian McShane as Winston, Keanu Reeves as John Wick, and Chad Stahelski – Director in John Wick: Chapter 4. Photo Credit: Murray Close As we’ve mentioned in the past, Chad Stahelski’s entire output as a film director has been limited to the four John Wick films he’s done over the past decade. That means John Wick star Keanu Reeves has had a front-row seat to watch Stahelski’s evolution over the course of the films; says it’s been amazing to watch him grow, and he’s really appreciated the partnership they’ve formed on the set. The first trailer for “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds And Snakes” has finally arrived.
The nearly three-minute clip begins with an introduction to the creator of The Hunger Games, Dean Casca Highbottom (Peter Dinklage), who has summoned the districts of Panem together for the 10th Annual Reaping Ceremony, “in which we choose two children from each district to fight to the death in the Hunger Games,” he’s heard saying in the trailer.
The prequel film to “The Hunger Games” trilogy goes back to the beginning, 64 years before Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) volunteered as tribute, and decades before Coriolanus Snow (Donald Sutherland) became the tyrannical President of Panem.

Lionsgate’s unveiled the official trailer for The Hunger Games prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, seven months out from its theatrical release. The nearly three-minute trailer opens with Head Gamemaker Volumnia Gaul (Oscar winner Viola Davis) introducing the creator of the Hunger Games, Dean Cesca Highbottom (Peter Dinklage). Highbottom confirms the 10th annual Hunger Games are about to get underway and introduces the tributes chosen to fight to the death.
The trailer shows a young Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) and the tribute he’ll be mentoring, District 12’s Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler). We’re also treated to our first look at a young Lucky Flickerman (Jason Schwartzman), the first-ever host of the Hunger Games and an ancestor of Caesar Flickerman.
“What happens in there, fueled with the terror of becoming prey, see how quickly we become predator. See how quickly civilation disappears,” says Gaul as the Hunger Games commence.

Ian McShane as Winston, Keanu Reeves as John Wick, and Chad Stahelski – Director in John Wick: Chapter 4. Photo Credit: Murray Close If you were to look up Chad Stahelski’s filmography as a director, it would start to look just a bit repetitive: John Wick, John Wick: Chapter 2, John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum, and now, John Wick: Chapter 4. Yes, his entire résumé comes from the John Wick franchise, but Stahelski doesn’t mind the lack of diversity. In fact, he told us he’s found a definite comfort zone working on these films, especially when he’s paired up with a star like Keanu Reeves. As kids and adults alike, millions of people dream of becoming movie stars. For some actors who make it, though, success on the big screen isn’t everything it’s built up to be. And while most still choose to stay, some stars leave Hollywood to pursue other careers. One such example is Charlie Korsmo, who played the son of Robin Williams’ character in Hook.
Korsmo’s face may be familiar to those who grew up in the 90s. The child star also appeared in movies like Dick Tracy. However, the actor’s career in Hollywood was short-lived, retiring from acting at a young age. Instead, Korsmo pursued a career in academia and is now a successful law professor.
Charlie Korsmo was a child actor, known for playing the son of Robin Williams’ character in ‘Hook’ Actors Dante Basco and Robin Williams on the set of the film Hook, directed by Steven Spielberg.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake had much to celebrate this morning. The studio reaped a record global and domestic box office debut for the John Wick franchise, with John Wick: Chapter 4 making $137.5M WW and $73.5M. The fourthquel was the best-received John Wick of all-time with audiences (A CinemaScore) and critics (95% certified fresh). The movie is arguably the second-best global opening for Reeves, after The Matrix Revolution’s $201.4M.
Despite Chapter 4 being the arguable swan song of Reeves’ martial arts maestro title character in the core canon, Drake tells Deadline today, “We’re not ready to say goodbye to Keanu with this franchise. It’s what alternative there will be.”

Keanu Reeves as John Wick in John Wick: Chapter 4. Photo Credit: Murray Close Like Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves doesn’t want age to get in the way of making an authentic-looking action movie. So, in the latter half of his 50s, Reeves — along with several of his John Wick: Chapter 4 co-stars — embarked upon an ambitious training schedule to get ready for the high-energy stunt work that would be required for the film. Reeves says he was thrilled to see so many people putting in so many hours, even before filming started. Popcorn’s just fine but skip the purchase of a beverage. John Wick: Chapter 4 is nearly three hours long and you absolutely don’t want to miss a single minute of the second-best film of the action franchise. Once you settle in (and turn off your phone!), don’t get up unless there’s a legitimate emergency.
It all started with the killing of an adorable puppy. Daisy’s murder pulled retired hitman John Wick (Keanu Reeves) out of retirement and sent him on a quest for revenge. Now, looking back on that first film, it seems sort of tame compared to the three sequels it’s spawned. Yet it remains the best of the lot, if for no other reason than that it established the world in which John Wick and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of assassins exist.

I’m guessing that a lot of action blockbuster movies aficionados have been thinking that the multiplexes have been pretty quiet this year so far. I mean the second Avatar swam in just before the end of 2022. As usual, the Winter has seen lots of horror thrillers, plus a couple of superheroes swooped in for the latest installment of their respective franchises. Ah, now there’s another franchise that brings a smile to the “big stunt spectacle” film fans. The fellow at the tentpole’s forefront doesn’t have a “tech suit” or a sculpted rubber and cape ensemble. No sir, though his fighting attire is a simple black suit, filled with a massive arsenal. His skill is his “super-power”, as we turn the cinematic page to John Wick: Chapter 4.

The John Wick franchise allows the action set pieces to be the star, empowering long takes that allow the audience to take in its sheer brutality. Each installment pushes further down on the pedal, and each time we think that it’s to the metal, we’re proven it actually goes further. John Wick: Chapter 4 once again exceeds expectations, delivering seemingly impossible levels of adrenaline-pumping action that must be seen to be believed.

The final trailer for John Wick: Chapter 4 finds the titular character (Keanu Reeves) being advised the only way he’ll ever have freedom and peace is in death. In classic John Wick style, he replies, “Yeah, not really.” After action-packed clips of Wick knocking off dozens of adversaries, the trailer ends in the best way possible with a dog looking up at the canine-loving trained killer as if he’s asking what’s next.
The fourth film of the incredibly popular franchise also features Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, and Hiroyuki Sanada. Shamier Anderson, Lance Reddick, Rina Sawayama, Scott Adkins, and Ian McShane also star.
Chad Stahelski, the director of the three previous John Wick films, directs this fourth film from a screenplay by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch. Stahelski, Basil Iwanyk, and Erica Lee produced, with Keanu Reeves, Louise Rosner, David Leitch, and Michael Paseorn executive producing.

While Netflix is rolling out plenty of original content in April, it’s also breaking hearts by removing a myriad of Oscar-nominated classics from its slate this month.
“The Shawshank Redemption,” “The Artist,” “Moneyball,” “August: Osage County” and Sean Baker’s indie darling “The Florida Project” are just some of the Academy Award nominees of years’ past that are leaving the streamer. Other acclaimed drama titles facing the chopping block include “Léon: The Professional,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “Miss Sloane.”
For the hopeless romantics out there who rave about underrated gems, “About Time” and “Dear John” will leave the platform April 15 and 30, respectively. Oh, and if you were looking to binge or rewatch all seven seasons of “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” time is of the utmost importance. Additionally, all six seasons of “Dawson’s Creek” are also leaving Netflix this month.
