The Hostel director came below the line to answer readers' questions about horror, comedy, Christoph Waltz and his favourite films
Eli Roth is responsible for some memorably nasty moments in recent horror cinema – the leg-shaving scene in his directorial debut Cabin Fever, the gruesome eyeball bit in Hostel, genital mutilation in Hostel : Part II (and if you've not seen those films and you're squeamish, we recommend you think hard before clicking those links).
He gave a memorable performance as Donny "The Bear Jew" Donowitz in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, and is visiting the UK this week to promote The Last Exorcism 2, which he produced. Last week saw the release of the first still from his forthcoming cannibal horror The Green Inferno, which puts paid to any suggestion that he might be moving in a more family-friendly direction.

It's hard to believe, but it's coming on five years now since Eli Roth last directed a feature-length film ("Hostel: Part II"). Since then, he's been busy as a producer, throwing his weight behind "The Last Exorcism," the upcoming films "Aftershock" and "The Man With Iron Fists" (both of which he co-wrote as well). But he hasn't stayed away from directing entirely, helming the short "Nation's Pride," which appeared in his buddy Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," as well as the pilot for the upcoming Netflix horror series "Hemlock Grove." And while Roth has had a couple of projects percolating -- including the sci-fi flick "Endangered Species," which he said last summer will be his next film -- "Grindhouse" fans will be happy to know one particular project still has some life. Among the strong handful of fake trailers in the Tarantino/Rodriguez double feature...

Eli Roth seems to be sliding into the new position of producer quite easily. So much so, who’s to say if we will ever see the man behind the camera again. There has been talk for a while now about his sci-fi thriller Endangered Species. However, he now has enough projects on his plate that I doubt we will even see that film in the next five years or so. Now, the director/writer/actor/producer has another project on deck. Deadline is reporting that Roth will be producing Aftershock, an earthquake thriller directed by Nicolas Lopez which is to include a cameo by Selena Gomez (groan). Roth will co-write the film with Lopez and fellow writer Guillermo Amoedo. The plot is centered around patients who are released from an insane asylum due to a devastating earthquake. Inspired by the earthquake that skook Chile in 2010, Aftershock is now four weeks into production in Chile.

I’m going to start by boldly/naively stating that I am not as big a fan of horror as I could be or indeed as many of you are likely to be. Yet I do have faith in the genre, I believe it to have the possibility and potential to make classic cinema, the obvious likes of Alien and The Shining are fine examples of that. As horror continues on into the 21st century there are one or two pieces of cinematic gold for every dozen appalling slasher sequels, monster mash-ups and vampire flicks.
Below is a list of 10 filmmakers, writers and actors who I guestimate could be crucial to the future of horror. So here it goes, a horror rookie looking into the possible future crystal ball of the genre with some very safe predictions (filmmakers that have already proven their craft) and a few more riskier suggestions.

He's dated Peaches Geldof, hangs out with Russell Crowe – and makes very gory movies. Hostel director Eli Roth talks to Geoffrey Macnab
Eli Roth has just been to China. The "gore hero of modern times" (as Roth was recently labelled at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic film festival in Switzerland) is, at least for now, leaving torture chambers behind and embracing martial arts. The director of Hostel ("the goriest, sickest, bloodiest movie you'll ever see", according to one critic) has been hard at work near Shanghai.
"Basically, it's a kung fu Star Wars movie," Roth explains of The Man With the Iron Fist, which stars his friend Russell Crowe. Roth co-wrote the screenplay with the RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan, and produced the film (which the RZA is directing). Roth hasn't actually directed a film since Hostel Part II in 2007. Eli Roth To Tackle Sci-Fi Pic?
Eli Roth has made a name for himself in genre film over the years. He proved his deft touch at unsettling horror with Cabin Fever back in 2002. Then came Hostel and Hostel: Part II, proving he had an equally deft touch at gory torture porn. Now, The Playlist reveals that his next project might be a sci-fi film called Endangered Species.

Theres no doubt that Eli Roth is a horror man. From his 2002 debut Cabin Fever, to the Hostel films it's pretty clear that he's a man who enjoys his movies with a side of gore! With his last two efforts being The Last Exorcism and Grindhouse, he has said that he'll be working on branching out with his filmmaking -- and naturally, we all assumed, or rather hoped that that would include a full feature version of his Grindhouse short, Thanksgiving. But according to sources, the Hostel director may be venturing into the land of disaster flicks for his next outing...

Since breaking out in 2002 with Cabin Fever, Eli Roth's name has been synonymous with the horror. Nearly every movie he's worked on since, from the Hostel series to The Last Exorcism to Grindhouse, has been associated with the genre, but in recent years he's shown interest in branching out. In addition to the kung-fu screenplay he wrote with Wu Tang Clan's The RZA, The Man With The Iron Fists, he's long talked about an apocalyptic disaster movie and now apparently he's decided to make it his next project. Screen Daily caught up with Roth at the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival recently and the filmmaker confirmed that Endangered Species will be his next directorial effort. First announced back in 2009, the film will have a budget somewhere in the $40-60 million range, making it by far the largest production he's ever done (Cabin Fever was made for $1.5 million; Hostel...

It’s been 9 years since Eli Roth burst onto the film scene with Cabin Fever, a low-budget horror movie many fans considered a return to the genre. It’s been 5 years since his last movie, Hostel: Part II, but he hasn’t been sitting around doing nothing. As well as starring in Inglorious Basterds, he directed the film-within-the-film, Nation’s Pride, and helped produce The Last Exorcism, among other projects. Now, Roth’s looking to get back into the feature directing game with his science fiction apocalypse project, Endangered Species.
indieWIRE reports the film will be in the style of Transformers or Cloverfield, only the source of the destruction that rains down on Earth, “is not aliens or robots or a virus,” Roth says,. “It’s a little more grounded. But when people hear it they are going to be like ‘That is going to be insane!’.” Roth estimates the...

"Hostel" and "Cabin Fever" filmmaker Eli Roth tells Screen Daily he still wants to make his long-gestating sci-fi apocalypse film “Endangered Species” as his next movie.
The $40-60 million budget flick will deal with an end of the world scenario that's "a little more grounded" than aliens, robots or pandemics. Due to the expense, Roth has been working hard on the script and re-writes to ensure he has it locked before he begins shooting.
Roth is producing the horror-thriller "Aftershock" set in the aftermath of the Chilean earthquake back in February. That project begins shooting this Fall.

It’s been five years since Hostel II, and while we’ve seen a tad bit of director Eli Roth in smaller form (such as Nation’S Pride within Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds), it’s about damn time that he gets back behind the camera for a feature.

Where has Eli Roth - who last directed a feature with 2007's Hostel II - since starring in Inglourious Basterds ? Besides workin' his Twitter account and becoming a TMZ darling, he's been writing a lot, apparently. Remember that fake horror movie trailer we showed you called Clown? The filmmakers slapped Eli Roth's name on the fake trailer even though Roth had nothing to do with it. Roth saw the trailer, liked what he saw, contacted the guys that made the trailer, Jon Watts and Christopher D. Ford, and offered them a production deal to turn the Clown trailer into a full length feature film! How cool is that! It's amazing to see all of these short films and fake trailers getting picked up and turned in full length feature films.

As a director he still seems to be at work on his FX extravaganza Endangered Species. But with his producing hat on, Eli Roth has just scored two new projects in the form of Clown and Aftershock, in a deal with new production company Vertebra Films.Clown, which will grow Machete-style from a grindhouse-y fake trailer, involves a doting father who dresses up to entertain his son's birthday guests, but then finds that, alien-Venom-symbiote-like, the pom-poms and baggy trousers and big shoes are an evil entity that he can't remove. First-timers Christopher Ford and John Watts put the trailer together prominently using Roth's name. They were afraid he'd sue, so must be rather pleased that he gave them a job instead. Ford wrote and Watts will direct.Aftershock meanwhile is a violent thriller set in the aftermath of this year's Chilean earthquake. Roth will co-write this one with Guillermo Amoedo and Nicolas Lopez.

Produced by Eli Roth and directed by Daniel Stamm The Last Exorcism is a film made in the style of a documentary and the subject is Cotton Marcus, a preacher who agrees to carry out one last exorcism to show the world the truth behind them.
The Last Exorcism has been very successful in the Us and has an ending that has divided audiences. We were lucky enough to get talk to both Eli Roth and Daniel Stamm about the film and its ending. There are therefore quite a few spoilers throughout.
Eli Roth’s involvement.
ER: Originally the producers Marc Abraham and Eric Newman brought the script to me as it was a project that they had developed and Studio Canal said that they would step in to finance the movie if I got involved. Originally the writers were attached to direct and I loved their film, Mail Order Wife.

Since I've been sick, I've got a long list of items for this Mpd, so I'm going to keep it brief.
#1: Human Centipede: Full Sequence is already filming in London and word is that it will attach 12 people. I loved the first sequence (trailer, review), but to be honest, a room full of friends didn't. F' em.
#2: Black Dynamite (review + trailer) was always a planned trilogy and director Michael Jai White recently told the Mirror that he's working on the sequel which is "gonna start where Black Dynamite left off - there's lots of things we didn't get a chance to do in the first one" and that it will be a fitting sequel. While the article doesn't specify, I'm guessing "starting work" means writing the script.
#3: Jj Abrams is developing a film with Lost director Jack Bender who called 7 Minutes in Heave which is based on...

"The Last Exorcism" hits theaters today. Make sure you see it this weekend. I independently decided to devote a week of coverage to it after I saw and was floored by it. If you think the subject of exorcism can't be topped after "The Exorcist"... well, I'm not going to say "The Last Exorcism" is better. Time and public opinion will decide that. But it's a fantastic film, with a wonderfully twisted and twisting story, great performances and an insanely creepy atmosphere, all of it accomplished with minimal gore and special effects.
To help us cap off this week of coverage, producer Eli Roth sat down with MTV Movies Blog on Twitter today to take some questions from us and from fans about the movie and about his work as a whole. I've culled out the key bits, stripped away most of the Twitter code and transcribed it all after the jump.

With "Machete" hitting theatres next week and "Hobo With a Shotgun" in post-production, talk has stirred again that another "Grindhouse" faux trailer could be making the feature-length jump soon - Eli Roth's holiday-themed slasher flick "Thanksgiving".

With The Last Exorcism (review here) getting set to terrorize moviegoers on August 27th, filmmaker Eli Roth (who produced the devilish flick) as per usual still has a lot on his plate!

Last week we put Qe contributor Joseph Proimakis on the horn with modern horror icon Eli Roth to get the skinny on the new, unrated Blu-ray release of Cabin Fever (out on February 16, 2010).

Even though Eli Roth is starting to develop himself as an actor (Inglourious Basterds) and a director of other things besides just horror (with Endangered Species), he still loves horror, and he's been producing films in that genre recently as well. He has an exorcism film called Cotton that is shot and finished. Variety reports that Lionsgate just picked up the Us rights to the film, which will be called The Last Exorcism. On top of that, Roth just closed a new deal with StudioCanal and Strike Entertainment to produce another psychological horror/thriller called The Other Woman. Wait till you hear what Roth has to say about it. The Other Woman, also written by Cotton co-writers Huck Botko and Andrew Gurland, is about a scorned mistress who makes a film for her ex-lover. That's it? Oh no, there's more. Roth says the film will delve into "the worst nightmares...

Eli Roth’s fake trailer, Thanksgiving, for the Grindhouse double-bill was probably, along with Rob Zombie’s Werewolf Women of the SS, better than the two films from Messrs Rodriguez and Tarantino. The “killer” concept was absolute genius. A murderer dressed as a pilgrim stalks an unsuspecting town on the Thanksgiving holiday. “White meat, dark meat: all will be carved.”
Fans soon let it be known to Roth that they wanted more than a two minute trailer and a full “bloody” film. And he acquiesed. But it doesn’t look like it’ll be happening any time soon. Talking to Bloody Disgusting recently, Roth admitted his fans will see it one day, but he’s got a full roster for the time being. Roth said:
“Well, I wanna do Endangered Species first before I do Thanksgiving. But you can’t do anything without a script, and that’s the first step.

Next week Cabin Fever (the movie that made me use a little extra caution every time I shave my legs) and its sequel, Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, will be coming out on Blu-Ray and DVD, respectively.
Dread Central found this to be the perfect reason to catch up with writer/producer/director-turned-notable actor Eli Roth to reflect on the film that put him on the horror map and what he’s doing these days when he isn’t celebrating all the award season success of Inglourious Basterds, the highly acclaimed Quentin Tarantino flick that was released this past summer.
Cabin Fever was part of a new breed of horror that took audiences to visceral levels. Several years leading up to 2003, when Roth’s vision of horror was unleashed onto unsuspecting fans, the genre had been playing it safe with a slew of PG-13 releases. Studios wondered if audiences were...

As Eli Roth continues to tweak his script for "Endangered Species" with an eye toward shooting in 2010, folks have been wondering if the director still plans to film his "Grindhouse" trailer-spinoff "Thanksgiving," directly after "Species."
The answer, Roth told MTV News, is yes.
"My friend Jeff Rendell, who I wrote the trailer with and who plays the pilgrim, he's in Boston right now but he's coming out to La in January and we're going to knock out the script in a week. I want to have it ready so I can go right from 'Endangered Species' to 'Thanksgiving' back to back. I want 'Thanksgiving' to be like dessert!"
At the moment, Roth and Rendell are going back and forth as they outline ideas, coming up with different kills—both those we've seen in the trailer and completely new ones. While Roth has long planned to make a feature-length...

Eli Roth is currently at work finalizing the script for Endangered Species, which he hopes to start shooting in 2010. But he also has plans to turn Thanksgiving — the faux-trailer he shot for Grindhouse — into a feature-length project.
In an interview with MTV, Roth confirmed that he'd like to go straight into Thanksgiving following completion of Endangered Species.
I want to have it ready so I can go right from Endangered Species to Thanksgiving back-to-back. I want Thanksgiving to be like dessert!
He also talked about the style he'd like for the movie, a decision influenced by shooting Nation's Pride, the fake Nazi propaganda piece seen in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds.
I shot that thing so fast, I wasn't self-conscious. I didn't have time to think. I was like, "Quick, get this, get this, get this!" And when you move at that pace, you actually get into a zone where you're purely going on instinct,...

After a two-year hiatus from directing, Eli Roth (Hostel) is back at the helm of a major motion picture with Endangered Species, his first sci-fi film. Roth, who is also writing the script, recently told MTV that he got some advice from his friend and mentor, Quentin Tarantino.
Quentin actually loved the draft and had some really great suggestions, so I'm tweaking the script. And I'm working out some visual effects tests, which is going to determine how I shoot it.
Roth first revealed he was working on the movie back in April, telling MTV that it was "along the lines of Transformers or Cloverfield ... with lots of chaos and mass destruction." Roth didn't say much more about the movie in the latest interview, but he did say that he owes a lot to Michael Bay, the director of both Transformers movies.

Controversial director Eli Roth recently chatted about his next project, the upcoming sci-fi feature Endangered Species.
The Hostel and Cabin Fever director said that Endangered Species will be “along the lines of Transformers or Cloverfield,” only more “science fiction-based and with lots of chaos and mass destruction.”
Playing coy with details, Roth said that his new film will be set against an urban backdrop that will be destroyed by “something.” No word on what that something is.
Roth recently sought advice from two of Hollywood’s most prominent directors: Michael Bay and Quentin Tarantino.
“Quentin actually loved the draft and had some really great suggestions, so I’m tweaking the script,” Roth said on his recently completed screenplay. “And I’m working out some visual effects tests, which is going to determine how I shoot it.”

Summit Entertainment is understandably busy these days, as the "New Moon" box office cash continues to roll in. In the last few weeks, to mention just a few of the studio's developing projects, there's been talk about splitting "Twilight" final installment "Breaking Dawn" into two films, a Brad Pitt-produced Dracula movie and a sci-fi flick from Eli Roth called "Invasion."
Last Friday, MTV News got an update about that last project from Roth, who will produce. As expected, he didn't comment on any plot details. From what we hear the film will follow, à la "Cloverfield," a small group of people trying to survive an apocalyptic event. All Roth would say about the film's environmental theme is that's "it's a really simple idea, but really great." He was more forthcoming when talked turned to the type of director they want for the project, a search that is now active.

When he joined Quentin Tarantino and the cast of Inglourious Basterds at Cannes in May, Eli Roth announced the title of his next feature: Endangered Species. We've since learned that the film was jointly inspired by Cloverfield and Transformers, and that, very much in the vein of those two films, it'll be a big city-destruction film. We don't know anything about the antagonist(s), but aliens have been strongly hinted, with humans being the endangered species. He has said it will be "science fiction-based and with lots of chaos and mass destruction." Now he's dropped a few small quotes about the film, which is gearing up to shoot in 2010. Speaking to MTV, Roth said that Quentin Tarantino had given him some notes, based on which Roth will further develop the script. (Wikipedia actually says that Tarantino is writing the script, which is patently untrue.) "Quentin actually loved the draft and...

It's a bit of an understatement to say that directors Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth have a good working relationship. The two have worked together several times with Roth appearing in Tarantino films like "Grindhouse" and most recently "Inglourious Basterds".
Roth is currently in preparations for for his upcoming alien invasion project "Endangered Species" that he describes as "going to be something that is really fun with lots of mass destruction ... something along the lines of ‘Transformers’ or ‘Cloverfield’ [but] a little more science fiction-based, and with lots of chaos and mass destruction. It is not aliens or robots or a virus - it’s a little more grounded."
Roth recently revealed that in getting things ready for filming, he sent off a copy of his script to Tarantino who made several suggestions that Roth quickly implemented into the story. Roth said: "Quentin (Tarantino) actually loved the draft and had some really great suggestions,...

Two of Hollywood's most famous Basterds are still on each other's side! Eli Roth's big budget opus Endangered Species is one flick we've been really looking forward to since it was announced last spring. Now it appears that Roth is closer than ever to getting back behind the camera to film the movie thanks in part to some great script notes made by Quentin Tarantino.
MTV sat down with Eli, who had this to say regarding his upcoming project:
"Quentin (Tarantino) actually loved the draft and had some really great suggestions, so I'm tweaking the script," he tells MTV. "And I'm working out some visual effects tests, which is going to determine how I shoot it."
In our previous story Roth promised the latter film is "going to be something that is really fun with lots of mass destruction ... something along the lines of ‘Transformers’ or ‘Cloverfield’ [but] a little more science fiction-based,...

It may be sci-fi, but director Eli Roth ( Hostel ) is promising some horrific disaster in Endangered Species , a film he's calling a mix of Transformers and Cloverfield . He told MTV recently, "Quentin [Tarantino] actually loved the draft and had some really great suggestions, so I'm tweaking the script. And I'm working out some visual effects tests, which is going to determine how I shoot it." The film is set against an urban backdrop and shooting begins next year. "The characters inform all the cast. There are certain actors that I love and that I'd love to work with and certain people I have in mind. But it's easier for me to hone and finalize and get the script finished and then the method by which I'm going to shoot it and then the order, and then...

Summit Entertainment, the small studio behind the big Twilight Saga: New Moon, has acquired two titles very different from sparkly teen vampires. They’ve spent the millions from that series on the comic book Alibi and the Eli Roth-produced Invasion.
Alibi is a Top Cow comic about a well-known socialite whose presence establishes a cover for the secrets of his twin brother, a government assassin, according to Variety. Mandeville Films (Surrogates) is producing and Summit has signed hot newcomer John Hlavin (Underworld 4) to write the script.
The comic was part of Top Cow’s “Pilot Season,” which meant readers could vote on which one-off title should receive a full series. Alibi came in last in 2008 with 3% of the vote.
It sounds like an interesting concept, but if they intend for the thriller to fit the zeitgeist, the producers should switch the sexes. My idea would be to make the socialite an attention-whoring female,...

With Eli Roth underway on his own alien horror film Endangered Species, it's sort of a wonder that Shock Till You Drop is reporting that he's signed on to helm another presumably alien horror film being described as .Cloverfield-esque.. Roth has already said about Endangered that it will be something involving lots of mass destruction like "Transformers or Cloverfield." So why the redundancy? Nothing is said about exactly what they mean by that, whether it be that there's a giant monster terrorizing the city or if they mean it will be shot using the .found footage. style we've seen making a comeback over the past few years. Summit Entertainment will be producing so expect their cash machine Robert Pattinson to take the lead and narrowly escape whatever peril may lay ahead, since there will obviously be a sequel. Roth and producing partner Eric Newman will steer the boat. Story details...

Summit Entertainment has acquired Invasion , a spec script by Ben Magid. Plot details are being kept under wraps at this time, however, we know the film opens with a wicked subway accident in Los Angeles in which the survivors (the film's protagonists) climb from the wreckage to find the, now "snowy," city in ruins. What they encounter topside is bodies, mobs of people in a state of panic and acidic "goo." The project is being described as Cloverfield -esque. Eli Roth and Eric Newman (producing partners on the upcoming Cotton ) will shepherd the project, says TrackingB.com . Interesting that Roth is getting behind it as he has his own Endangered Species flick in the works, another reportedly "alien"-themed film. Magid was one of the...

I'm not sure what has inspired Eli Roth's newfound alien kick, but I think it's a big step up from pooping out another Hostel installment. We already know about his one probably-about-aliens project, Endangered Species, but he’s now involved in producing another one titled Invasion, which is said to be "Cloverfield-esque." Do Not confuse this with Nicole Kidman’s horrendous remake of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, it’s a new project based on a script...

Eli Roth's planning his own sci-fi movie called Endangered Species, but that hasn't stoppped him from getting involved in another alien-themed project, called Invasion and written Ben Magid, according to the good people at Shock Till You Drop. That's not to be confused with either the Nicole Kidman film The Invasion, which we're doing our best to forget, or the TV series starring William Fichtner. This one is described as Cloverfield-esque, opening with an accident in the Los Angeles underground (not the one The A-Team disappeared into though; the subway). The survivors emerge into a changed world, where snow is falling, the city's in ruins and survivors roam in mobs. Oh, and there are patches of (presumably alien) acidic goo all over the place, which never makes for a tropical destination hotspot.Magid's also worked on the movie adaptation of Hack/Slash, and sold another original script in Pan,...

It's been two years since Eli Roth directed a feature, but he's kept busy on the side with writing, producing, and acting. After his recent appearance as Sgt. Donny Donowitz in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, Roth is returning to horror, the genre that made him famous with his Cabin Fever and Hostel movies. He's also readying himself to take on science fiction.
At the Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico, Roth announced that he is finishing a script for a new sci-fi movie called Endangered Species, which he also plans to direct. He also mentioned that he's writing and directing a feature-length version of his Thanksgiving mock-horror trailer that appeared in Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse double-feature. His role as the bat-totting, Nazi-hating, Bearjew in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds aside, Eli Roth is best known for pretty much one thing: Making bloody, controversial, R-rated horror movies. Things have been quite on Roth's directorial front, however, since 2007's Hostel: Part II failed to top the box office the same way his first journey to the seedy underground world of torture clubs. His initial follow-up project was supposed to be a film adaptation of Stephen King's sci-fi/horror hybrid novel Cell, but his involvement faded as the project transitioned from the big screen to the small screen.
Now, however, it looks like Mr. Roth has dropped the horror side of the hybrid all together and has decided to go completely science fiction on his next directorial project.
